In 1968, Swiss researcher and author Erich von Däniken published Chariots of the Gods
In the book, von Däniken put forth his hypothesis that the technologies and religions of many ancient civilizations were given to them by space travelers who were welcomed as gods. He is regarded by many as the father of the 'ancient alien theory' or 'ancient astronaut theory'. This theory was also popularized by other writers, including Zecharia Sitchin, Robert K. G. Temple, David Icke, and Peter Kolosimo. The idea that ancient astronauts actually existed has not been taken seriously by most academics though, there are some indications that recent evidence may start to sway the standard conceptions.
