Dark Flying Cryptid in Columbia County, PA

I recently received the following account:

Several weeks ago, my husband and I were traveling south on Rt. 11 from Berwick to Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania; not far from the Susquehanna River. I was driving. The time was about 7:35 pm on Sunday, March 24, 2019. It was just becoming dusk when something flew across my path, at a little above treetop or telephone pole level, that looked like a small airplane. However, it was all black and had no lights.

I felt as though I should stop because I was getting too close. By the time I got my wits about me, it was gone I looked to the left trying again to catch another glimpse. But as quickly as I saw it, it was nowhere to be seen. My husband did not see it as he was looking in another direction.

I returned to the area the next day. There are a couple of bogs in the area at the base of the hill before leveling out to the riverlands. While an industry or two in the area, there is little housing until you get closer to the river. I personally feel a void, emptiness and eeriness that palls over this section of land.

I have attached a sketch of what I feel as it appeared to me being a spectator over the scene, rather than from inside the vehicle.

I took it for a Mothman. D

NOTE: This is in Columbia County, PA. The witness gave me specific information to the location, but for the time being I'm going to avoid disclosing it. Lon

UFO Sightings Near Skinwalker Ranch During WWII

I recently received the following account:

When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7. 1941, my Dad, an employee, a teacher, of the then-called U.S Indian Service (now called the Bureau of Indian Affairs) went to volunteer, intending to enlist in the U.S. Army.

He was marked 4-F because of a noticeable limp he had acquired when, as a 12-year-old boy, he fell off the high porch of my Grandparents' homestead house located in east central Oklahoma, and broke his leg very badly. He had to learn to walk all over again.

Because he could not get into the service, he signed up for a program that allowed him to volunteer to take the place of another federal employee who would be going overseas.

Dad was notified that he would relocate for the duration to the federal boarding school for Indian children at White Rocks Indian School, very near the Ute Indian Reservation at Ft. Duchesne, Utah. I was about six months old at the time and, of course, remember virtually nothing of the entire experience.

My mother had been a U.S. Indian Service nurse in Phoenix, but there were no open positions for her at Ft. Duchesne, so she became a housewife. From time to time, she would take me out in my stroller to a small meadow close to the school, and we would have a small picnic.

When I was in my 30s, my mother told me a story.

One day, when we were having our little picnic lunch--it couldn't have been much of a lunch as there was heavy wartime food rationing in effect--a shiny object flew in from the west, made a circuit around the little meadow, hovered for a few minutes, then flew away to the east. I was surprised. I asked her why she had never told me the story before, and she said she never considered the incident of much significance. She could have been right, but I asked her to draw the object from memory. She drew a circular globe. That's it. A circular globe. I asked her if the object did anything but fly through the air. She tried to explain that it made some kind of jittery or shaky movements, but she really couldn't describe what the movement was like. Hmmm. I asked if the object could have been carried by the wind, but she didn't remember it being particularly windy that day. So. Circled . . . the . . . little . . . meadow . . . then . . . flew . . . away.

The incident was several years before Kenneth Arnold's famous 1947 sighting of nine shiny objects that flew in tandem and skipped like saucers as they flew through the sky near Mt. Rainer in Washington state.

Years later, I met a man, a police officer who had worked at Ft. Duchesne. He told of an incident when he and his family were laying out on the lawn one evening as families do, drinking coffee and soft drinks, when a shiny object overflew their house, stopped, and shot straight up. The officer couldn't identify what the object was, but it was enough to send the family scurrying into the house. The officer said he and his family didn't go out in the evening like that for awhile.

Well, after Mom told me the story of the meadow sighting, I gave it some thought. At least two possibilities came to me. As I said, Kenneth Arnold hadn't yet had his sighting experience, but I learned even in those pre-internet days that the Ft. Duchesne area was kind of notorious for sightings of that kind.

Or, there was the other possibility. During the war, the Japanese had made and released a number of Fu-go hydrogen-filled balloons carrying incendiary devices from the Japanese home islands, hoping the balloons would make their way via the jetstream, land in America's forest lands, and start forest or wildfires. Or perhaps actually kill somebody. From Wikipedia: "From late 1944 until early 1945, the Japanese launched over 9,300 fire balloons, of which 300 were found or observed in the U.S. Despite the high hopes of their designers, the balloons were ineffective as weapons, causing only six deaths (from one single incident) and a small amount of damage. The deaths occurred when the victims decided to touch the balloon, thus causing it to explode."

Whether the shiny object my mother saw was a flying saucer or a Fu-go bomb, or something else, I certainly can't say.

But here's what I can say: that little meadow is within two or three miles of the infamous Skinwalker Ranch. I don't know if the paranormal experiences and phenomena experienced in that Ranch area were happening back as far as WWII, but one certainly happened nearby on a picnic day in about 1944. - JP

'Ole Red Eye'

The following article was printed in The Evening Sun (Hanover, PA) on October 31, 2011:

Some people might consider this marker, off of Dicks Dam Road north of Cross Keys, a simple scarecrow. But others think it could be a totem for the Mothman creature they say is skulking around the Adams County woods

The stream gurgle fades with the waning afternoon light, as you press deeper into the woods. A muddy shore gives way to thick grass heavy with rain. The path narrows, branches grasp and pull.

Something moves and you turn with a start -- a squirrel bounds away through the brush.

If it's March, or April, we're not having this conversation. You're not wide-eyed and alone and half-lost in a maze of trees and undergrowth.

But this is the season for ghouls and for legends. It's the time of year editors send reporters out to the wild, in search of fleeting phantoms. Thus, the mothman creature that reportedly lives in the rural Adams County woods.

And thus a soaked pair of shoes, and pants legs abloom with sharp briars. Leaves whispering, dusk falling as the trail leads you deeper, farther from home.

So how did it come to this?

Here's the story.

It's 1988, and a man living in the Baltimore area is set to meet an old friend from Adams County at a Boy Scout conference. The old friend mentions to the man, Lon Strickler, that Scout troops on overnight trips at Camp Conewago have recently been packing up their tents early, leaving the grounds in a rush of spinning tires. They've been waking in the night, the man said, to the sound of shrill crying.

Screaming sounds, out among the trees.

Strickler -- who had some experience in paranormal research -- was intrigued. He agreed to accompany his friend, and another man, to investigate for a night.

The group met at the Boy Scout camp off Dicks Dam Road north of Cross Keys, on a Friday night, around 7 p.m. They walked from the empty cabins about 500 yards into the woods, and then, following the Conewago Creek another 300 yards upstream, pitched their tents there along the shore. The talk was of sports and childhood camping trips, and night passed without incident.

There was little mention of the something they thought could be out in the woods. But still, Strickler would say later, it felt as if he were being watched.

Saturday dawned clear and cool, the sun warming a winding creek. The three men explored the area for most of the day, arriving back at camp again in the early evening. Conversation again covered football and food, the hours blurring and fading with a crackling campfire. Then, from somewhere in the shadows, a scream.

Maybe an owl, one man said. A bobcat, or a bird? But the three knew the local woods, and the animals. And this wasn't close, they said. This was something different. The wail of a child.

So the group grabbed stowed gear and crept away from the dying fire, out into the night. They searched for signs of tracks or disturbance, squinting to pick up movement among the trees, scanning the shadows under slivered moon.

Water murmured in the creek bed. Leaves split like eggshells underfoot. Breath streamed out in bursts of silence, white against the night. Strickler stopped.

There it is, he whispered.

Standing in the creek was a large, dark figure. It was tall as a man, and stood upright; its red eyes burned. In an eye blink the creature leapt from the creek with a dizzying burst of wind and water, melting away into the sky.

Its scream echoed over barren branches.

That was more than 20 years ago, Lon Strickler said recently, and he can still see it -- those eyes. And others have seen it in those woods, too, he said. Stories of sightings have come in from people he's never met. He's tracked them, and they still trickle in today.

Its become known, Strickler said, as the Conewago Phantom.

For all the build-up, though, and the obvious ghost-story selling points, few around the area had ever heard of the beast. Knocks on doors brought little more than puzzled, pitying looks. Trips down forgotten stone lanes yielded only empty stares.

Several people, at least, got a good laugh.

So as the late-day sun melts to twilight, there's little left to do but find that deserted Boy Scout camp.

Behind an iron gate lays a wide, empty field, with a slow hill running to a line of wooden cabins. The cabins, huddled close and backed by dense woods, are dark and boarded, with no signs of life save for a dent here, a long scratch in a split board there. Then, movement.

At the top of the stone drive a blue pickup rolls into view, slows, and rumbles to rest beside you with a diesel growl. Inside, a man with a hat pulled low and a wide, dark mustache. He kills the engine but the woods are somehow louder now, birdsong dripping down from the trees.

He jerks his head, beckoning.

"I hear you're looking for 'Ole Red Eye,'" the man says as you struggle your way across the loose stone. Kids at this camp been talking about him for years, he says, fresh dirt on his shirt sleeve, gravel in his voice. Some claim they've seen him.

There's something they're afraid of, he says, out in those woods.

He stares off into the shadows, and while you can't see up into the pickup, you notice the gun rack behind his head. You notice it's empty. And your eye goes to the black tarp behind him. It flaps loose in the wind, slick and wet.

He turns back, catches you looking. And a hungry smile forms under that mustache, as he reaches down with his right hand -- slowly -- his little eyes on yours.

The gray sky seems to sag in on itself, and your skin goes cold. The birds squawk and scream, trees pressing in as your voice fails.

"I imagine that's all just kid stories, though," the man says. And he takes a drink of the soda in his hand. The truck rumbles and lurches to life again, tires grinding into the stone. Be careful, he advises then, out here all alone.

But you're already right behind him. The swishing and sloshing of your soaked shoes forgotten, as you fumble with your keys, as you jump in your car. As you press down the automatic lock.

So silly, of course. But even those who don't believe -- those tree-branch fingers clawing at your window, that cold breath of wind creeping through the door -- this month we look twice over our shoulder.

Did you just hear something? - The Evening Sun - October 31, 2011

Spectre Photographed at 'Haunted Hill'

I recently received the following account:

It was my two sons' spring break, so I was looking for some cheap and easy things to do with them as well as get them moving outside. I opted to take them up to Jockey Hollow at Morristown National Historical Park in Morristown, NJ. This is America's oldest National Historical Park which commemorates George Washington and the Continental Army's second winter encampment in Morristown during the Revolution in 1779-80. We parked in the small, empty lot at the base of the old Pennsylvania Line soldier hut hill. It needs to be noted that this particular area has been known as a sort of paranormal hotspot for years. There have been various ghost sightings as well as Bigfoot-like cryptid sightings back in the 60s. The particular hill which the soldier huts are on has even gained the moniker, "Haunted Hill" and has been written about in the past.

It was an overcast, warm day and deserted around the area of the huts, so it was actually a nice time to be there. We parked the car, and as I got out and looked up at the lonely huts I noticed how nice they looked from my perspective, with the forsythia in full bloom around the lot. I snapped a photo then we began our short trek up. I have to emphasize that my sons and I were definitely the only ones there. There was no one on the only path leading to the huts, and when we got there, there was no one who could have been concealed from our sight inside any of them. My sons went in all four huts (as they always do when we visit there) and it would have been impossible to miss anyone in the small structures or walking down the clearly visible path back down to the road.

Two days later I’m going through the photos on my phone and I remembered the one I took of the huts the other day. I began to crop it a bit, but when I zoomed in I noticed something which I hadn’t when I took it. In the doorway of the hut farthest to the left looked to be a person peering into it. Since it’s substantially zoomed in it’s not the clearest, but it’s clearly a figure dressed in somewhat odd clothing: high socks, black pants and vest, and billowy white sleeves. It almost appears that the figure is in black-and-white.

There are two aspects that make me really wonder about this. First, I’m beyond sure that there was nobody else near those huts when we were there. There’s one way up and one way down and it’s impossible to miss someone when you’re walking up and when you get up there. Also, it's a wide open spot and when you're there you can hear even the slightest sound, which we did not other than ourselves. Secondly, as documented before, this area is not new to strange happenings—especially that hill. -Keith IN NJ

Bigfoot Watching Traffic Near Harriman State Park, NY

This encounter happened 2 years ago. My dad, mom, niece and myself were heading upstate to Schenectady to visit family. We were in my dad's car with me and my mom in the back seat and my niece riding shotgun while my dad drove.

We were approaching the Harriman State Park exit going north on the New York Thruway at about 1pm and traffic was crawling along because of a minor fender bender. Well, my mom (which has no knowledge and not an inkling about Bigfoot whatsoever) looks out to her left and says “Hey look, a monkey is looking at us”. No one paid attention but about 30 seconds later as we’re crawling along with traffic I said “What do you mean monkey?” She says “A big monkey was standing on the other side of the thruway next to a tree looking at the traffic and then looked at us” I then began to question here about certain details and after a few minutes I was convinced that what she witnessed was a bonafide Bigfoot! She said he had a mans face with long brown hair and very tall and that he was looking left and right at traffic when their eyes met briefly! I remember telling my dad to pull over cause I wanted to run back and get a picture with my cell phone and my niece was down on coming with me but he refused. I was angry at myself because here I am the true believer in the paranormal and the unexplained in the family and my mom who knows nothing about this and has no interest had the luck and pleasure in witnessing a very rare event! Some people get all the luck! - AP

Unexplained Phenomenon

Somewhere between approximately 5:00 to 5:30 A.M. on Friday morning, November 2, 2018, I was traveling south on US-65, between Athens and Decatur, Alabama. The conditions were rainy, dark and cloudy, and possibly a bit foggy. I noticed what appeared as a comet-like figure streaking left to right through my windshield. It seemed to be many miles away, but I perceived it to be a large body, including its tail, maybe a quarter-mile long. The head was bright white. For several seconds I tracked it as it began to dive and exploded in bright light, not filling the entire sky but a sizable diameter explosion, which happened just above the horizon. Within another second, the entire sky, visual field filling my windshield, glowed a dull red, which may have been brighter if not for the dark clouds. After another 2-3 seconds, the sky gradually became less red and was back it its original night color. - BC
