A girl, living in the Managua, Nicaragua barrios, encounters an upright canine while walking through the dark passages in the area.
I came across the older account from 1987 in Nicaragua:
"My mom used to take me to stay with my Grandma who lived about 3 1/2 miles away, close to Lake Nicaragua which is infested with bull sharks. The area where Grandma lived was under constant construction and the city was deforesting the area to make more houses. Light posts were spread throughout the area where no homes were yet built
Some creeks passed under bridges, and one could walk to other barrios, or parts of the neighborhood that were closer to the lake and the mountains. Many native people lived there. They cooked rice and beans on the stove and made tortillas by hand on a comal. My mother had a knack for sending me to those neighborhoods to buy beans and tortillas, which is what I did that afternoon. I had never believed in werewolves, witches, or anything supernatural or unknown, but I was shocked to understand the importance of keeping an open mind and knowing and respecting others who have seen the paranormal.
That afternoon, I headed to buy beans and tortillas using two plastic containers, passing by my grandma's house. I had to go through an area where a creek flowed all the way to Lake Nicaragua, with plenty of forested areas and encroaching buildings that were under construction but not yet finished. The road I walked on ran between the forest and the creek. As I got closer to my Grandma's neighborhood, the unfinished buildings became more apparent, with only a few trees around, and the creek turned into part of a waterway. To cross, I had to walk over a bridge to reach the road that led to the outskirts of the city of Managua, where my grandma's house was, in an area called America's #2.
Anyway, on the way to buy Mom's beans and tortillas, I had no ill feelings. The sun was still up; it was about 6:30 pm. Since we are near the equator, there is still sunlight at that time. It took me approximately an hour to do this. I had no worries since the people in the area knew me. On my way back to Grandma's, as I approached the new buildings, it was already dark, and there was a full moon that night. It was around 7:45 pm, as I always wore a watch, which I really liked, and I still wear a watch today.
As I finished crossing the bridge, I approached a building that was unfinished and had no roof or doors, located about 150 yards from the creek and the edge of the woods. The moonlight illuminated the building while casting shadows on the ground, lighting up the mid-level areas around five feet and higher as the moonlight hit the building at an angle. As I walked past a door by the road, I suddenly heard a growling sound, like a dog growling. I had never been fond of dogs since they often seemed to chase me, and one had bitten me when I was six. However, now I was grown up, and I actually liked dogs and cats.
As I heard the sound, I wasn't sure if it was curiosity or stupidity, but I decided to investigate by backtracking to see if it was a wild dog with rabies, since rabies was rampant in our country at that time. This way, I would know whether to expect an attack or just grab a rock in case it decided to mess with me.
To my horrific surprise, I reached the door of the building and found myself only ten feet away from a creature I'd only seen in movies like 'The Howling.' I couldn't believe my eyes! This creature slowly began to rise from a hunched position until the moonlight illuminated its face. Mind you, this was a one-story building with no roof. The building was at least eight and a half feet tall, yet this creature's head was maybe five inches above it! I struggled to find my voice; I was in a state of awe and disbelief.
This creature had pointy black ears and a mid-sized snout like a German Shepherd, and its eyes had a yellow glow. It had hands like a raccoon's but with a curve to them. Suddenly, my reaction kicked in, and I exclaimed, 'NO!' At that moment, the creature heard me and immediately turned its head to look at me, I realized.
At this point, I had two choices: stay and hope it didn't eat me, or run the mile to my Grandma's house. I can tell you the second option was better. I instantly turned and ran in the direction of Grandma's house. I felt the creature behind me, but I dared not look back. I ran, and strangely, I didn't even drop the containers I had with me!
I sprinted all the way to my Grandma's house and rushed inside. Fortunately, in those days, Grandma always left the door open. I ran past my mom and Grandma and dashed into the kitchen to place my mom's containers on the counter. I grabbed the steak knives that Grandma had and told my mom and grandma, 'It's after me and I'm ready.'
At this point, my mom and Grandma tried to convince me that I was okay and urged me to put the knives down. I didn’t set the knives down until I was sure the monster wasn’t coming to attack Grandma's house.
I had nightmares and horrible dreams for about two years after that. But this was not the last time I would see something like this creature." Name withheld
