Naked and (Actually) Afraid

October 2014 - Quintana Roo, Mexico

Brandon Dix, a contestant on Naked And Afraid called in to Darkness Radio to talk about something strange that he and his fellow contestant observed one night while shooting in Quintana Roo, Mexico.

“Back, last October, I got selected to go film an episode of the Discovery Channel's Naked And Afraid. This is the first time I told anybody other than my family. They take two, a man and a woman, they strip em down completely naked. They take away all their items and they put them in the most remote, wild, uninhabitable places on the Earth. And they have you survive for at least 21 days. Yeah, it was a pretty wild experience and I got lucky enough to be put on a small island off the coast of Quintana Roo, Mexico. And during my time out there, it was just me and her, the crew would film during the day and at night they would leave. So at night, to battle the bugs, we would go sit on the ocean. And so I'm just sitting out there on the ocean one night and we're just talking, the moon's shining bright and, all of a sudden, we see three or four people walking down the beach coming towards us. Now we've been on this island for about two weeks and we know there's no one else out there. So we kinda get a little freaked out. We're like, uh oh, because, you know, we're in Central America and we're thinking it's smugglers or something like that. So, immediately she runs and hides in the woods and I run behind her. We put our fire out and we just watch them walk past the front of our camp. They never even paid attention to us. The crazy apart about it was, these people weren't dressed like you would think. They were what basically looked like cloth around their waists and they had necklaces on and stuff like that. And so they looked like natives. They looked like what you would typically think what a Mayan would look like. Well, we sit there for a couple of days and we never talked about it with each other but one day I'm walking the beach and I find these ancient Mayan ruins. And I just completely... I'd been out there for, I don't know, a week and a half, or two weeks at that point and I had no idea they were there. So all of a sudden, I guess it was just the right time. We never seen the people again. We asked the crew if they kept a night-crew out there and didn't tell us and they said, no, so as far as we know, we were the only two people there. There was no sound, nothing. They just completely ignored us and walked right past us. And they were all full bodied. You couldn't see through them. It was dark so it was kinda hard to make out any details other than they were wearing something around their waist. It did look like they were wearing necklaces so for us to see that at 2 o'clock in the morning and we're already butt naked with nothing to protect us, it kind of freaked us out a little bit.
