"I looked to my left at the bedroom with its lights off, and standing in the doorway was my fiancé's father. He looked exactly like his photos, wearing the shirt he died in. He was just standing there without emotion."
I received the following account:
"Hello. My fiancé's father died when he was a child but was old enough to get to know him and spend quality time with him. He was electrocuted to death while working as an electrician and fell about 20 feet; it was pretty terrible. He was wearing a yellow and red plaid long-sleeve button-down shirt when he died. He looked exactly like my fiancé, and his photos are always around.
We stayed at his grandmother's three-story farmhouse, just the two of us when we were teenagers, and she asked us to house-sit and feed her livestock. His father grew up in that house his whole life and died when he was only 28. We stayed on the third floor because it was a really well-designed room, but also because you had to walk through this creepy, unfinished attic stairway to get there.
I was on the first floor grabbing some milk from the kitchen. I came upstairs and reached the second floor. Across from the stairway was a bathroom facing the stairwell with its light on; I looked to my left at the bedroom with its lights off, and standing in the doorway was my fiancé's father. He looked exactly like his photos, wearing the shirt he died in. He was just standing there without emotion; it felt like my breath had been sucked out of me, that's the only way I can describe it. The air left my lungs instantly.
I tensed up and walked sternly to the stairs, past the next two bedroom doorways with the lights off; he was in each one! I finally made it to the attic stairs and gasped for air as soon as I shut the door. I walked through the creepy attic, barely able to comprehend what was happening behind me. I tried to wake up my fiancé, but he's a very heavy sleeper. So, I stayed up all night trying to figure out what had happened and why. I didn't feel scared; I just felt neutral when I saw him. It was like I saw him, he saw me, and we knew each other was there.
I never got to meet his father, and it was very nice, looking back, to be able to see him physically in person. I told my fiancé months later, and I felt terrible that he wasn't the one to see him." S
