Daily 2 Cents: Time Traveler...'DO NOT GO! -- Illinois Family Flees Infested Home -- So...Where Are the Aliens?

Time Traveler...'DO NOT GO!

August 12, 2015 – No Location Given

In September 2015, a geologist named Craig called in to tell of a strange story that happened to him the previous month, one that involved, possibly, a time traveller.

“So I've had the strangest experience I ever had in my life in August. Have you got a minute for a story? Okay so let me give you a little quick background about me so that this little experience will make sense. I'm in my 50s, my daughter is in her 20s, she has no children. I have no grandchildren. One of my hobbies is, I have a little fleet of kind of vintage motorcycles and classic cars all in various states of disrepair that I drive around during the summer. I got a big warehouse they are sitting in so they're not sitting out getting rusty. So I told her, when I'm gone you can do anything you like with these cars and motorcycles, the only thing is, I got this 1931 Model A and it's been in the family since the 50s, my dad and I restored it, please keep that. And then I got this little Honda, a 1972 Honda XL 250 that was my first big motorcycle and it is just like in showroom condition. Those are the only two that I would like to see stay in the family.

So, in the summer I like to get up early, before I go into the office and I'll stop in at Starbucks with my platter and have a cup of coffee and get ready for the day, usually between 6:30 and 7:00. So, second week of August, I think it was Wednesday, the 12th, I am sitting in Starbucks having a cup of coffee. I'd ridden my little Honda 250 down that morning and a fellow comes in and he says, 'Hey, whose little Honda is that outside?' I said, 'Hey, it's mine!' and he said, 'I got one that's just like that.' So he comes over to the table and he stands there and we chat for a few minutes and, you know how sometimes you run in to somebody and you just have this rapport with them and I just, this guy looked like he was maybe in his late 20s, early 30s and we talked about cars and motorcycles and in this short conversation we had he also said, 'Yeah, my grandfather left me a Model A and this bike,' and I said, 'Oh, that's a, you know, that's a coincidence because I got a Model A as well.' And I'm thinking, Gosh, I got to get to know this guy. He's someone who likes to get their hands greasy and, you know, and we could work on these vehicles together.

So we talked for a few minutes and you know, I was about... I was going to go get a re-fill. My cup is empty. So I stand up and I said, 'Can I get you a cup of coffee?' because he hadn't gone to get one and he said, 'No, I don't have much time' and he said, 'I really need to be going but I really need to tell you something' and he said, 'I know this is going to sound crazy' he said, 'But I can't tell you how I know' And it was really weird and he started to get all serious, looking right in my eyes and tears started to well up in his eyes and he said, 'Do not go to Alaska in October' And I probably go, I'm a geologist, I probably go work all over the Western US. And I go to Alaska five, six, seven times a year and I didn't have a trip planned and I kind of laughed. And he said, 'You know, I can't tell you how I know this but I just need to tell you... Do not go!' and tears were in his eyes. And he reached out and grabbed around me and gave me a big hug and he whispered something while he was hugging me and I was so kind of taken aback. You know how you hear something that takes a little while to... I didn't understand what he said. And he let go of me and said, 'Remember that' and he turned and he strode towards the door and I saw him go out the door past the windows and I sat there for about 10 seconds processing, what did he say? Suddenly it came to me. He said: 'Love you, Grandpa.'

I took off out the door and just as I rounded the door around the corner and I kind of saw this flash and it was like, you know, it was 6:45 early in the morning and you know it could have been the sun glinting off a windshield or something but when I came around the corner there was no one there. And there weren't any cars and it was like 250 feet to the next door way and there was nobody there. And... You know, I'm a scientist and I don't know how to, you know, yeah this flash could have been a reflection and this guy could have just been a coincidence and maybe he was messing with me but I don't know. So, yesterday, a proposal came across my desk for... you know... for October.”

Illinois Family Flees Infested Home

A family living in a haunted house or being visited by a demon isn’t a new concept anymore. You can find shows on television almost every night of the week portraying either paranormal investigation teams looking for evidence or a family getting more than they bargained for when they moved into a new house.

But when this story takes place it was harder to find investigative teams and most people thought a person was crazy if they claimed to hear disembodied voices.

A book supposedly based on true events was released in 1977. The Amityville Horror, written by Jay Anson, was made into a film in 1979. It told the story of George and Kathy Lutz who bought a house and were forced to flee due to evil forces that threatened to possess them.

What some of you might not remember is that Rockford had a case much like the Lutz family. It took place in 1982 to a family on Rockford’s east side.

Vaughn and Sherri moved into what they hoped would be their dream home with their five children. Those hopes were dashed almost a year later when the family fled their home in terror. At first, they tried to ignore what they thought was a ghost but that ended after the wife, Sherrie was temporarily possessed by a demon during a seance.

Their claims started shortly after they moved into the home in 1981. The events seemed to appear in a pattern of every three weeks. They heard footsteps walking up the stairs from the basement after which someone or something would attempt to open the basement door. The television in the living room would turn on by itself in the middle of the night even after the family unplugged it. Household items such as pots, pans, plates and silverware would disappear only to reappear in another location after three weeks. The missing items were always in sets of three.

The incidents grew more frightening until one day when Sherri was visiting with a friend and both of the women heard horrible growling noises coming from the basement. Terrified, they both fled to a neighbor’s home. The neighbor insisted on phoning the police despite Sherri’s reluctance. The police filed a report that became public and the newspapers reported on the family’s experiences. The police found no explanation for the noises. There was an article that mentioned when the police report was filed, the officer was startled by the last digits for the case number. The number ended in 666. So...Where Are the Aliens?

Physicist Enrico Fermi famously asked the question "Where are they?" to express his surprise over the absence of any signs for the existence of other intelligent civilizations in the Milky Way Galaxy. Although many potential resolutions to this so-called “Fermi paradox” have been suggested over the years, there is still no consensus on which one, if any, is correct. The question of whether we are alone in the Milky Way (or in the universe at large) remains, however, one of the most intriguing questions in science in general, and in astronomy in particular.

Given the enormous uncertainties involved with the emergence, evolution, and survivability of any extrasolar life (if it exists), we shall attempt to briefly identify the most generic, remotely-detectable signatures of alien life (both simple and intelligent), and to examine the expected effectiveness of various search strategies. This topic has become particularly timely, because observations (primarily with the Kepler space telescope) have shown that the Milky Way contains no fewer than a billion Earth-size planets orbiting Sun-like (or smaller) stars in the “Goldilocks” region that allows for liquid water to exist on the planet’s surface (the so-called habitable zone). Furthermore, the search for extraterrestrial intelligent life has recently received a significant boost in the form of “Breakthrough Listen”—a $100-million decade-long project aimed at searching for non-natural transmissions in the electromagnetic bandwidth from 100 megahertz to 50 gigahertz.

Simple life appeared on Earth almost as soon as the planet cooled sufficiently to support water-based organisms. To be detectable from a distance, however, life has to evolve to the point where it dominates the planetary surface chemistry and has significantly changed the atmosphere, creating chemical “biosignatures” that can in principle be detected remotely. For instance, Earth itself would probably not have been detected as a life-bearing planet during the first two billion years of its existence. Concerning the evolution of intelligent life, the main open questions include:

—What are the geochemical constraints on the evolution of complex life?

—What are the timescales that those constraints dictate?

—Are there evolutionary "filters" or bottlenecks that make it extremely hard to make the transition to intelligence? On Earth, for example, it took about three billion years for the most basic multi-cellular life forms to appear. It took four and a half billion years (and a series of contingencies such as plate tectonics and asteroid impacts) to reach even the most rudimentary capability of interstellar communication (That is, via radio reception and transmission). These considerations demonstrate that it is important to first establish whether planetary systems that are older than the solar system are common in the Milky Way.
