Daily 2 Cents: Hung, Drawn and Quartered Skeleton of Saint Found -- Time Slip in Rome -- The Real Story Behind the Bell Witch

Hung, drawn and quartered skeleton found in Welsh pub could be English saint

A pile of bones discovered in a Welsh pub could be the last remains of an English saint who was hung, drawn and quartered in the 17th Century for his religious beliefs.

The bones, found 140 years ago in the Olde Star Inn next to St Winefride’s Well, Holywell, North Wales, were discovered bundled in 17th Century children’s clothing and hidden inside an old trunk.

Recent forensic tests by specialists at the University of Edinburgh established the bones, which included part of a skull and a leg, belonged to a priest who had undergone the macabre Elizabethan punishment in the late 17th Century.

Further circumstantial evidence has suggested the bones belong to St John Plessington, a Catholic priest executed in 1679 and known as one of the “Forty Martyrs of England and Wales”.

St John was executed in Chester after being found guilty of treason under Elizabethan laws that made being a Catholic Priest an offence.

He was beatified in 1929 by Pope Pius XI, and canonized and made one of the Forty Martyrs in 1970 by Pope Paul VI.

The Forty Martyrs are a group of Catholic men and women executed for treason and other related offences in England between 1535 and 1679. Read more at Hung, drawn and quartered skeleton found in Welsh pub could be English saint

Time Slip in Rome

No date given – Rome, Italy

Becky told Dave Schrader, who was hosting Coast To Coast about something bizarre that happened to her mother.

My mom had an experience in Rome once that we always thought of as a strange experience but however after listening to the show, I'm wondering if it's some sort of time travel. We were in Rome on vacation when I was maybe 12 years old because of an unexpected train strike we only got to spend one day in Rome. Well, you can't go to Rome and not see the Coliseum. My mom, dad, sister and our friends and I went on a tour. When you see the Coliseum, there are only a few places to walk. You can look down into all the different levels of the structure. The tour guide will tell, this is where the slaves were, this is where they kept the animals etc. And as we were walking through, I looked over at my mom she had turned sheet white. She was shaking and trembling. She asked to leave. And so we left the tour and went back to find a cold place to sit down. When we finally got mom to talk, she told us that she had been in a different time. She could smell the blood, the roar of the crowd, She said that none of us were with her. She could hear the screams of the slaves and the noises of the animals. She said she was overwhelmed by the smells and sounds and said she had to leave. Several years later we returned to Italy and the Coliseum but did not have the same experience. To this day, she still says that the event was too vivid to be a dream or part of her imagination. So, I don't know, was she somehow transported into a different time or had a fleeting moment of psychic sensitivity?”

Plague confirmed in Oregon teen

A teenage girl in Crook County, Oregon is in the ICU recovering from a case of bubonic plague, according to the Oregon Health Authority and the Crook County Public Health Department.

Health officials believe she contracted the bacteria from an infected flea during a hunting trip earlier this month in Morrow County, Oregon.

According to a press release, the young woman began feeling sick on October 21 and was hospitalized in Bend, Oregon on October 24.

Plague is rare in Oregon, with only eight human cases diagnosed since 1995 and no deaths, according to the Oregon Health Authority.

The plague usually occurs in rural and semi-rural areas of the western United States, most commonly in New Mexico, Arizona and Colorado.

How they survived bubonic plague, just barely

The bacteria that causes the plague is naturally occurring in the environment. Humans become infected by fleas who have fed off of infected rodents such as rats, chipmunks and squirrels.

Symptoms usually occur in two to six days after exposure and include an overall feeling of sickness, sudden fever, abdominal pain, swollen lymph nodes, nausea and vomiting. It is successfully treated with antibiotics when caught early.

There have been 15 other human cases of the plague in the United States this year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Four of those patients have died.

The CDC is working with Oregon health officials as well as local health officials in Crook, Deschutes and Marrow counties, to investigate this illness. Plague confirmed in Oregon teen

Psychic says she knows real story behind Bell Witch

There's a new story to tell in the Adams-based legend of the Bell Witch.

A Mississippi clairvoyant, featured on A&E's upcoming five-part series, "Cursed, The Bell Witch," is claiming to know the real story behind the nearly 200-year-old tale, and she says she got it directly from Betsy Bell, who, according to the legend, was tortured for years by an unseen force on her family's farm.

"Some people will not agree with me, and that's OK, but I gave Betsy Bell a voice to say what really happened," said Sara Dulaney Pugh, better known as Angel Leigh, a clairvoyant from Leakesville, Miss.

"As a Christian, when I was told that this could be something evil, it scared me. I had to really pray about it. But once I talked to Betsy, I wanted to help as much as I could. For so many years, she was buried and couldn't tell the truth."

Pugh was three years old when she first started to see things that others couldn't, she said. For years, the visions terrified her, so she kept them a secret from virtually everyone she knew, except her parents.

"I would tell my mom, and she told me to pray about it," Pugh said. "If people had known the truth, I wouldn't have had the life I've had. I probably wouldn't have been a cheerleader. I probably wouldn't have had friends. I had a wonderful childhood, I really did, and it was because of my parents."

Now 29 years old, Pugh has been married for more than seven years and has two children of her own. About a year-and-a-half ago, she decided to open up about her past and join Mississippi Paranormal Investigations as a way to learn more about her abilities.

Her involvement with the group led to her appearance on the A&E show, she said.

Filming leads to book

In July, Pugh was introduced to Sue Clifton, a Mississippi-based author and ghost hunter. The two met while filming for the A&E series at Betsy Bell's grave in Yalobusha County, Miss. and, according to Clifton, they felt an immediate connection.

"I did not believe in mediums before I met Sara," said Clifton, 70, a former teacher turned author. "Neither of us knew each other's names, let alone anything else, before then, but Sara came up with things that night, personal things about my family that no one could possibly know.

"I was totally fascinated. She's the most intriguing person I've ever known, and that night when we were having a break, I told her 'I'm going to do a book about you.'"

Two months later, Clifton published "Through the Eyes of Angel Leigh," a book she co-authored with Pugh, chronicling Pugh's life, the people she's helped and her interpretation of the Bell Witch legend. Before it was released in September, Pugh insisted on a meeting with descendant Bob Bell, of Springfield, so she could tell him the story since it was about his family, Clifton said.

"That just speaks to what kind of person Sara is," Clifton said. "People can criticize all they want to, but I don't have to defend anything. I think Sara's story is the true account of what happened." Read more at Psychic says she knows real story behind Bell Witch
