'The Enfield Haunting' Actors and Crew Experienced Unexplained Activity

Actors working on a series about the Enfield poltergeist have reported strange occurrences on the set.

As one of the most compelling and chilling accounts of paranormal activity ever recorded, the case of the Enfield poltergeist remains shrouded in mystery and intrigue even to this day.

The phenomena started in August 1977 when single mother-of-four Peggy Hodgson called the police to report a series of strange disturbances at her home in Enfield, England. One of the visiting police officers reported witnessing a chair moving by itself across the floor but was unable to determine how it had happened.

As time went by the peculiar incidents occurring at the house escalated from items of furniture being shaken and moved to objects being thrown, loud knocking sounds and - most terrifyingly of all - the alleged levitation of 11-year-old Janet, one of Hodgon's four children.

Notable researcher Maurice Grosse from the Society for Psychical Research spent significant amounts of time observing and recording the poltergeist activity at the house.

To this day his files remain some of the most intriguing accounts of a haunting ever documented.

Over the years the case has inspired numerous books and documentaries as new generations of researchers have struggled to conclusively explain what took place more than 35 years ago.

The latest TV series to cover the case is The Enfield Haunting, a drama based on Guy Lyon Playfair's book This House is Haunted: The True Story of the Enfield Poltergeist

Oscar-nominated actor Timothy Spall who, having been selected to play the role of Grosse, spent time listening to the original recordings that his namesake made of Janet speaking in a strange demonic voice. He later admitted that the experience had left him a little shaken.

The subject matter of the series also left several members of the production team a bit spooked, especially when items of equipment started to mysteriously stop working on set.

"Every time our photographer came on set his camera broke," said executive producer Jamie Campbell. "It annoyed him, but terrified the rest of us." Read more at TV stars left terrified after a ghost wreaks havoc with the set of a new poltergeist drama

NOTE: Here's a post discussing poltergeist communication and other activity related to the phenomenon This particular case has irked me since I first read about it many years ago. I honestly believe most of the activity was either staged or the result of overactive minds. Lon

  1. As far as poltergeists go I wasn't a believer either until we moved into a house from 1903 that, after living there for three years, began to have poltergeist activity in it. I and my children were all victims of it. It scratched and pinched both of my children. I heard it speak twice and it giggled like a little girl on many occasions when my children tried to go to sleep at night. Many times it would wake them up. My son, always quick to react tried in vain to connect his fist with it. He said it was a girl, described her manner of dressing which was from the early 1900s and described her the same way that his sister had when she was just 4 yrs. old. I can swear to you that the things we saw happening in our house were in fact real and not staged. There were also a host of 3 ghosts that we were able to identify by articles in the newspaper from that time period as a young woman died in my living room, which was her bedroom at the time, from an accidental gun shot wound to her abdomen. Very often we would hear one of them open the big door downstairs with a dead bolt on it that I'd installed myself. I had the only keys to it. Even so he opened it up and left it open all year round. Then he'd walk up the stairs in his work boots where he walked up and down the hallway upstairs dragging one leg. Two families were there the most, the one that built it and one after they sold the house. The rest only stayed less than one year, everyone of them, except for us. We couldn't afford to move. People say they'd live on the street before they'd live in a haunted house but let me tell you it's not that tempting especially in winter. At any rate we were there for six years and only three of these were heavily haunted. I suspect movie and tv people would be more apt to stage such things for the hype. Some homeowners would do it for the fame and possible fortune but I didn't want either of those things. In fact childrens' services said they'd take my kids away if I remained in the house with them very much longer. I had been disabled since 1986 which meant that I was eligible for housing at that point but it took more time for a place to open up. I did all of the research myself and documented the entire haunting experience just for my own peace of mind. The land lady swore it was not haunted and nothing in there was a threat to life and limb but I proved her wrong. She actually threatened to evict me for telling her this but I'd gotten statements from people up and down our street who all knew the history of the house, long before I ever did. So, the lawyer sent her a letter threatening to sue her if she didn't cease and desist abusing me over this as he had proof in hand that decades passed and no one stayed even a year in that house. I had every one of their names, lol. I just wanted out of that house as fast as possible because it wasn't a good feeling being shoved down the stairs by one of these things, then caught under my arms and taken back up the stairs by it! There were no locks on the old doors so I used a butter knife to lock myself in my room. My sister in law who was staying with us rolled herself up in her blankets and wedged herself between her bed frame and the wall, effectively trapping herself there. I had to go in there and get her out! She heard the boot falls on the stairs and in the hallway and the dragging of one leg and freaked out. She heard me slam my door and the butter knife go under the board beside the door to keep the door from opening! Things happened in that house that really scared me and I do not scare easily.
