Drunk mountain gorilla punches photographer

Photographer Christophe Courteau was taking images of mountain gorillas in Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park forest when the group's alpha male charged him.

Courteau is a pro: he got the shot of that incoming fist before the punch hit him.

The ape was reportedly "drunk" from eating bamboo stems, which ferment in the stomachs of gorillas. Basically, their bodies make their own beer.

“In less than a second, he was on me, and strongly hit me like a rugby player. With the shock, I felt all his power and weight on my body," Courteau told Caters News Agency.

“I was taking photos of the gorilla family on the slopes of the Virunga Mountains with several clients of mine,” said Corteau. “We were all mostly focusing on a silverback called Akarevuro, the leader of the Kwitonda Group.

“All the members of this family were quite excited on this day, probably due to the consumption of the bamboo stems, which cause the gorillas to become extremely drunk and excitable.

“Suddenly, Akarevuro, who was stood close to us, just ran at me, but I could not move away as I was taking photos on my knees.

“In less than a second, he was on me, and strongly hit me like a rugby player.

“With the shock, I felt all his power and weight on my body.

“A silverback gorilla like him weights around 250kg, so imagine a 250kg rugby player running straight towards you. Normally, they timidly avoid visitors when they move close, but not this time, Akarevuro was too excited and drunk.

“He did not care about me, and pushed me out the way with his left hand like if I was not there.

“Then he dashed through the vegetation to chase away a black back male behind us who looked to be interested in one of Akarevuro’s females.” - BoingBoing

Mysterious 'Booms' in Kansas City

Loud booms in the Kansas City metro sparked several questions.

41 Action News looked into theories on what could be causing all the noise.

In one YouTube video, you can hear what sounds like an explosion. The video, posted in late December, shows it happened several more times.

Jimmy Brewer of Independence, Mo., heard a similar sound on Sunday afternoon.

“I helped sell fireworks during the summertime, so to me it sounded like a pretty substantial class b firework which is a lot bigger than what you sell at a fireworks stand,” explained Brewer.

He was out jogging in Kansas City near the Independence border, but he couldn't tell where the noise came from.

Brewer said he didn’t think it was a sonic boom either.

“No, I've heard a sonic boom before when I was in the military but it was still pretty loud," he said.

We called Whiteman Air Force Base to see if they ran any training operations, but they didn't have any aircraft flying this past weekend.

In another YouTube video a locomotive horn goes off before a long boom.

There are several train lines that run near the location where Brewer heard the noise, but he said that's not where it came from.

“I just got hired by Union Pacific so I've heard trains so I don't believe it would have been a train,” Brewer said.

We went to UMKC Assistant Physics Professor Paul Rulis.

He didn't know the source of the noise but said there is a way to determine to location of it.

“Once you have the equations and you have the recordings, you'd be able to figure out where that sound came from even if it wasn't inside the triangle made by those points," Rulis said.

Another possibility is it was a "frost quake." It's rare but it happens when there's a rapid drop in temperature. That causes an expansion of frozen water creating a sort of mini explosion.

We’re still investigating the source of the booms. If you notice one let us know where you heard it and when. - KSHB
