Daily 2 Cents: New TV Series About Area 51 -- Swedish 'Rat From Hell' -- Cell Tower Vanishes!

X-Files creator producing new series about Area 51

AMC announced that Chris Carter, best known for creating the science-fiction drama The X-Files, is now attached to a dramatic television series about the notorious top secret military installation known as Area 51.

The network ordered a pilot episode for this series back in July 2012. And, at that time, it was announced that series would be based on a book titled Area 51, an uncensored history of America’s TOP SECRET military base by Annie Jacobsen. Judging by AMC’s recently announced slate of new programming, that basis has not changed. But the project has reportedly now officially moved into development.

The Hollywood Reporter describes the series as “A contemporary conspiracy thriller revealing the true story behind the infamous Area 51, America’s most mysterious military installation.” And the working title for the series is simply Area 51.

Carter is coming aboard the show as its writer and executive producer. He joins The Walking Dead executive producer Gale Anne Hurd who was already attached to the project.

Jacobsen’s 2011 book is controversial because she makes many questionable assertions. Most notably is the inclusion of an explanation for what crashed near Roswell, New Mexico in 1947. She claims an anonymous witness informed her that the craft recovered at Roswell was actually an advanced German aircraft, and that the bodies recovered from the crash were children that had been mutilated by infamous Nazi doctor Josef Mengele. This craft was allegedly ordered over the U.S. by Joseph Stalin, hoping to trick Americans into thinking it was an extraterrestrial spacecraft, which would result in a mass panic similar to the one caused by the 1938 radio broadcast of H.G. Wells’ The War of the Worlds.

It was originally announced that Jacobsen would serve as a co-producer of the show. There has been no word about whether that is still the case as the show moves into full development. - OpenMinds

Swedes catch 40cm 'rat from hell' in their kitchen

A Stockholm family was horrified to find a monster "viking" rat living in their kitchen. Pest controllers who were called in to catch the beast found it measured 40 centimetres (15 inches) - not including the tail. The family in Solna, north of Stockholm, had no idea what was in store when their pet cat was too scared to go into the kitchen. "We thought it could be a little mouse, but after a while we figured it couldn't be because it was making too much noise," Signe Bengtsson said.

Her worst fears were confirmed while emptying the rubbish a few days later when she saw a rat guzzling leftovers under the sink. "It was right there in our rubbish bin, a mighty monster. I was petrified. I couldn't believe such a big rat could exist," she said. "I couldn't help but do the old classic and jump on the kitchen table and scream." Her husband Erik Korsås who was away at the time was dubious that such an enormous rat could really be living in his kitchen. "When my wife called I said 'Yeah, sure, take it easy, I'll be home on Sunday. But by then it had jumped into the waste bin and had a Swedish smörgåsbord with all the leftovers," he said.

As the rat made more appearances over the next day, the family took to stomping around as they passed the kitchen to ensure they wouldn't meet the rat from hell again. "By the time I got home, the rat was so domesticated that it just sat under the kitchen table," Korsås explained, adding that it had chewed through the water pipes connected to the dishwater and started a small flood. When the family saw the rat scurrying into a nook behind the dishwasher, they put the kitchen on lockdown and called the pest controllers, who arrived with three heavy-duty traps.

The rat was caught by the neck soon after, but didn't die immediately and scurried away behind the dishwasher again. Bengtsson called her husband home to deal with the creature, which later died. He measured the rat to be 39.5 centimetres from nose to the start of its tail. "The kids were afraid it would come back to life as some sort of zombie rat. They didn't want to touch it," Korsås added. It turned out that the rat had found its way into the apartment cellars by chewing through cement and wood, the pest controllers explained. "It was quite a shocking experience," Bengtsson added. "No one wanted to go into the kitchen after, and the cat was terrified for a week. The pest controllers said they'd never seen such a big rat before." - The Local SE

Yellowstone Park Volcano Dying?

Yellowstone Park is home to the largest volcano in the world. But, is this massive geological formation dying?

Ken Sims of the University of Wyoming led a research team to study the gigantic volcano at the Yellowstone Caldera. There, they sampled water and air near Mammoth Hot Springs. They also ran tests on water from the feature, looking at acidity in water samples and radon in the air. Sims looked at how gas and water mix as the rise from under the ground. By understanding these processes, researchers hope to improve techniques to predict eruptions.

According to the study, the supervolcano may be slowly dying out. The last time the volcano erupted was 70,000 years ago. That event was relatively small compared to previous eruptions, which occurred hundreds of thousands of years before that time.

Geologists believe an eruption of the supervolcano could send 2,000 times more debris into the air than Mount Saint Helen's did when it erupted in 1980.
Conditions at the volcano have remained relatively steady since monitoring began 30 years ago, according to the National Park Service. Over 10,000 geysers, hot springs and mud pots help drain heat from the feature, which stretches over parts of three states. Rad more at Tech Times

Cell Tower Vanishes!

10/22/2012: We were delivering newspapers in downtown Littlestown,Pa. on the eastern edge of town at about 4:45 AM,when we came to a stop sign facing south. At this time,we observed a configuration of white lights in a diamond shape with all the lights equal distant apart. The lights were solid white and at the top and bottom there was an additional white light that pulsated together like a heartbeat. All we could see was the lights. At first,we thought it was a celltower because they were stationary. After further thought we realized celltowers have RED lights,NOT white. We returned to the site about 5 minutes later and the lights were gone.We were really confused now. Why,if this was a celltower, did the lights go out?We returned to the site the next day after sunrise and found nothing but an EMPTY FIELD.NO structure,NO ANYTHING!!!To this day it bothers me greatly.I am a man who uses deductive reasoning to figure things out.THERE IS NO EXPLANATION FOR THIS.Whatever this was,it made no noise at all.It was approximately 400 feet from us and maybe 200 feet in altitude. I will never forget this experience EVER!I remember it like it happened yesterday. - MUFON CMS
