The Emilcin UFO Abduction

On May 10, 1978, Jan Wolski, a 71-year old farmer, was passing through a forest near Emilcin, in eastern Poland in his horse drawn cart when he noticed two individuals ahead, walking in the same direction, but with "supple jumps" like divers on the sea bed. When one of them approached a muddy patch, his feet seemed to slide across the mud. When Wolski caught up with the strangers, they walked alongside the horse and cart for a while then jumped onboard and sat down gently, one at each side, gesturing to Wolski to carry on.

Wolski drove on while the strangers exchanged some words in an unknown language. Shortly, as the cart approached a clearing in the forest, a strange, almost "transparent white" object could be seen, hanging in the air about 70 meters away, emitting a faint humming sound. Wolski described the object similar to a short bus, but with a roof like a barn, it was about 5 meters in length, three meters in width, and about 2.5 meters in height. It shone, as if nickel-plated. No windows were seen. At its four corners, and half-way up it had on the outside, barrels with black vertical rods running through them and carrying what looked like spirals rather reminiscent of corkscrews. These black rods were rotating very fast. The "corkscrews" emitted a range of colors, and the barrels seemed to have been the source of the humming. When closer to the object, Wolski said the sound was like that of bumblebees in flight. The craft's surface was smooth, stainless, and seamless. At a height of some 50 cm from the ground was suspended a lift held by four thin cables attached above the entrance to the craft, which had descended as the trio approached. Stepping on to the platform one of the entities invited Wolski aboard, gesturing to him that he should grasp the cables. After rising rapidly the lift stopped in front of an opening and Wolski was motioned inside. Inside, Wolski stepped into a chamber with walls that were almost black and saw two more beings identical with the first two.

The chamber was rectangular. There was no internal lighting other than the daylight from the open door. The walls, floor, and ceiling were a grayish black the same color as the overalls of the occupants. The floor was shining, as though polished. The walls were smooth and hard to the touch, and made of a material resembling glass. Against the four walls there were seats, each fastened by two black cables. No apparatus was seen inside the contraption, with the exception of two black tubes that ran from one gable wall to the other and two holes, about 30 cm apart, into each of which one of the entities inserted alternately a smallish black rod. From floor to ceiling, the height was about 1.8 meters. On the floor of this cabin were about ten crows or rooks, which seemed to be paralyzed, though they could move their heads and eyes. The four identical beings, of indeterminate sex, were about 1.4 to 1.5 meters tall and had delicate, slim figures. They were dressed in tight-fitting, flexible one-piece suits of a grayish black rubber like material, covering the entire body except the faces and hands. No pockets, belt, or fasteners were seen. Their legs seemed thicker than those of normal men, and from the way these curved when the beings sat in the cart with their legs hanging down, they looked like prehensile limbs. A hump was visible on the shoulders, as though something was contained under the suits. The slim, greenish colored hands had five fingers, between which were fine membranes, except for the gap between thumb and forefinger.

Their heads were relatively large, with faces of an olive green or greenish brown hue, having high cheekbones that gave them an Asiatic appearance. The eyes, almond shaped, very long, were dark, and appeared to lack any whites. In the place of the nose, there was only a slight protuberance with two small vertical openings. The mouth was straight and thin. Their teeth were white. No hair was visible on the face.

When the beings smiled, the mouth twisted to one side with the effect of a grimace. Their speech was rapid and delicate. They had a polite, gentle demeanor and Wolski felt no fear in their presence. The beings indicated to Wolski that he should take off his clothes, and one of them helped him undo his shirt buttons. Facing him less than two meters away, one of the beings held in each hand a gray disc shaped object that seemed to be attached to the hand by something like a suction pad. The discs were vibrating and emitting a dull humming sound. Wolski was positioned with one side facing towards the entity holding the discs, then with his back towards him, and finally with the other side. Wolski's arms were raised alternately by the entities, whose fingers were very cold. During the process he smelled an odor similar to that of burning sulfur; a smell that lingered in his clothing for days afterwards. When ready he was shown the way out, bowed, and said goodbye. The beings bowed likewise, smiling. The same lift took him down almost to ground level, so that he was obliged to jump down a short way. Reaching his horse and cart, Wolski turned around to look at the contraption. Two or three of the beings were watching him from the entrance. He did not see them depart.

TRANSCRIPT OF AN INTERVIEW WITH MR. JAN WOLSKI

by Henryk Pomorski & Krystyna Adamczyk

HP: ... Opole Lubelskie Commune. We talk to Mr. Jan Wolski, age...

JW: 71 [seventy one]

HP: Who has for us lots of interesting things to say… You met some extraterrestrial people. Can you say us how did it happen?

JW: I cannot directly state for sure that they were extraterrestrials because they were similar to us thought tiny, delicate, of small height - about 150 cm. [5 f.]

HP: How did it happened that you met them?

JW: Well… I was driving from Komaszyce, from that side. In fact I was returning from Dabrowa village but the encounter with them occurred on this side of Komaszyce, on a field belonging to me.

HP: When did you see them for the first time?

JW: I noticed them as two people heading toward my cart... Those people [the beings] hadn't noticed me before. When they saw me they began looking at me and then they gradually began slowing down their walk more and more. When I drove closer to them, they divided on both sides (one went in one direction and the second one on the opposite one) and I drove in between them while they in the meantime jumped onto the moving cart.

HP: They sat next to you, didn’t they?

JW: Yes… However, not directly next to me but behind me (the second one also) while I was sitting in the center. Their legs were hanging down.

[Mr. Wolski neither didn’t scorn them nor escaped since similar mode of traveling was some kind of tradition and it would be a discourtesy to drive them off and. Moreover, he didn’t know then who they were in fact.]

HP: Can you describe their outer appearance?

JW: They looked in this way: black outfits covering their foreheads and from here to here and o chin, and here they were green.

HP: What about their faces?

JW: They had green faces and palms as well, from here. It was in this way.

HP: In which language they spoke? Did they say anything to you?

JW: They spoke in some language (huh) but I’m amazed that they could understand each other since they spoke like that “…a petete petete te…”. Their words were short and fast and I don’t know how they can understand one another.

[The beings were communicating with Mr. Wolski by gestures, both while they were with him on the ground and onboard their aerial craft. It is contrary to many reports about UFO passengers reports where witnesses said about some type of mental communication.]

HP: What about the further journey? What happened next?

JW: They were driving ahead for some time and then ordered me to stop – they didn’t spoke in words but expressed it with hands to stop. So I understood it and began urging the horse to stop but he [one of the beings] caught the reins and pulled back urging the horse to stop (It was afraid of the craft.). And when it stopped they got off the cart – in the same way as they previously got on and they gave me a sign with hands to go with them. I tied my horse, then got off and went after them toward that machine. There was a tiny elevator of some kind for two people to hold – maybe it couldn’t carry two large people but surely could delicate ones… And then he went forth and set his foot onto this craft, I followed him and it soon lifted up rapidly – in front of that craft door. And the whole craft could be about 4 m. above the ground, maybe 4.5 m. [ca: 13 – 15 f.]

HP: The craft was hovering in the air, wasn’t it? Please, describe the way it moved and how looked like?

JW: It was a purely white craft – from outside.

HP: And what about it’s size and shape?

JW: It could be 4.5 maybe to 5 m. [14 – 15 f.] in height and it was as long as a bus, so it looked in that way. I haven’t seen any… [unclear but the craft was void of any outer features as lights, joints etc.]

[Jan Wolski on other occasion mentioned that there were 4 “barrels” on the craft corners with “drills” (as Wolski said). Those black drill-like objects seemed to be made of black material and were rotating around its axis with great speed although without creating any disturbances in the air. They generate the hum Wolski mentioned.]

HP: And it was hovering in the air, wasn’t it? When you stand on the platform along with him the tiny elevator brought you swiftly to the interior of the craft…?

JW: No, no, no… (It carried us to place) by the craft entrance… [Not inside.] The elevator was on the same height as the entrance to the craft… Not from the bottom but by side.

HP: You found himself inside… What could you see there?

JW: Inside I could see only several crows – those our black birds…

HP: Black ones, as our ravens or rooks…

JW: So they were lying under the wall, not that one with the entrance but on the opposite side. To my opinion they seemed to be paralyzed – they were moving with their wings, legs and heads but weren’t moving around.

HP: Ok... You have encountered two beings [on the ground]. Were there any other inside?

JW: Inside of the craft there were also two ones. When we got onboard, there were another two inside.

HP: Were there any other appliances onboard? Maybe some gauges or some other things for sleeping or sitting…

JW: There were only some benches onboard… From 8 to 10 - I couldn’t remember. Benches of some kind for one man to sit.

HP: What then happened with you?

JW: They ordered me to dress down…

HP: By gesticulation?

JW: Yes, they showed me to dress down. When I was half-naked, to my waist – and maybe not fully because when I was undressing I removed my jacket, then a blouse with 4 buttons… And when I began to undo two upper ones, the being that was on the elevator with me undid the two ones from the bottom. When I was undressing the fourth being appeared – that one who remained on the ground. […] Well, when I was partially undressed (to my waist) and stood in place I received an order to undress completely. So I took off my shoes. One of the present beings then appeared in front of me with an appliance in a form of two dishes combined in its hand. He neared “the saucers” to my front, then revolved me holding my arm slightly. Then he raised my arm up and began to doing something at my side with those plates… then from behind and on the other side. Then he showed me to dress up. After this order I began to dress up and look around but there were neither windows nor lights visible.

HP: Maybe they had some food products with them?

JW: I couldn’t see anything. [Break]. (They have something that might be food) in form of icicles. They were crumbling it into small chips and insert them into their mouth. He pointed with his finger on the thing in an icicle shape and ask me – not by words but gesticulating – could I eat it.

HP: They wanted to treat you with it…

JW: Yes, they wanted to treat me with it. But it was somewhat strange for me and I showed with my head move that I wouldn’t eat that thing.

HP: They ordered you to dress up after scanning you… What was the color inside of the craft: white, green, black… ?

JW: It seemed black inside. It was in the same color as their outfits – black although with some grayish tint.

HP: Can you describe the outer appearance of the craft?

JW: It was transparently white, as polished aluminum.

HP: You have said that the beings wore black outfits and had greenish faces. What with their eyes and other face features?

JW: They had slightly slanted eyes… They cheekbones were protruding. Once I saw Chinese men and they [the beings] slightly reminded them. But Chinese seemed to more massive and taller… Then he showed me to dress up so I did it and I was about to went off the craft as the being said. When I was about to do it, I turned back and took my cap off saying to them: “Goodbye”. All of them took a bow. Then I took a step ahead and found myself on the ground. And that’s all.

[Jan Wolski also used to term the beings as “monsters”.]

HP: What about the altitude the craft was hovering?

JW: Approximately 5 m. [16 f.], maybe 4 or 4.5 m. I’m not sure. It was hard to establish it then…

HP: You then rushed to home and told your family members and neighbors to go there to inspect it…

JW: Yes, it’s true. When I arrived home I quickly entered inside but my son’s weren’t there, only my wife… I asked her: “Where are the boys?”. She replied that they are somewhere outside. I quickly ran off the house. My wife asked: “What happened?” I replied: “Nothing”. “Maybe something is wrong with the mare?” – she asked. Then I ran outside and saw my sons coming from the barn side. I called them saying: “Go quickly on the field and you will see some craft in the air”. I even described it as a “car” in the air, something out of ordinary. So they ran to alarm one and another neighbor and then together rushed toward the field. My third son appeared afterwards and I said to him: “You also should go and see it”. After a while I joined to them because of curiosity. But when I arrived at the spot along with my sons there were nothing in the air – only grass trodden down covered with dew and paths coming in all directions… When I saw that it disappeared I turned back and returned home. The rest remained at the site checking the footprints etc. Soon two other men joined them. They were inspecting the prints, saw some foot…

[As it turned out, the area was full of strange footprints. There were also clues indicating that soil samples might be taken. The footprints were nearly rectangular in shape although soon they were trodden down by local inhabitants and law enforcement officers.]

HP: Were those prints left by people of the craft visible?

JW: Yes, they were. Boys checked them out and one of them compared the footprint of the being to his feet… I don’t know whether it was smaller or bigger (than his feet).

HP: Because of this very interesting event you surely have many visitors that want to get to know about the case. I’ve heard that you had been visited by our scientist, Mr. Blania from Lodz, an ufologist. What is his opinion in this matter?

JW: He thinks, after all of my descriptions and all of the incident, after answers to questions about the craft whirring, hum…

HP: But the craft wasn’t whirring as a car engine for example?

JW: No, but it was a rumble of some kind. Something like: “…zzzzz…”. I answered him [Mr. Blania] and I don’t know who said them that some kid from the village also could hear some noise, a loud hum. So they went to Popiolek family, since he was a son of Popiolek. He [boy Adam Popiolek] said to Mr. Blania that he saw some craft in the air, some balloon (he explained) or car – according to his descriptions. He ran into the house and yelled to his mother: “Mummy, come here because it could destroy our house because there is a craft in the air”. The woman went outside but returned after a while to his cooking duties and she hasn’t seen the craft.

HP: What is the boy’s name?

JW: Popiolek.

[Adam was about 5-year-old in time of incident. After some time it turned out that many other inhabitants of Emilcin witnessed the sighting of UFO object but they didn’t want to talk about it. Many also remembered hearing loud bagns.]

HP: He’s is from here? He lives in Emilcin?

JW: Yes.

HP: The craft inside was dark or enlightened? There were no windows in its hull?

JW: No, there were no windows. The light was coming inside only by the door of the craft since it was in the daylight.

HP: What about the door?

JW: The door weren’t closing as ours but were rolling as some piece of cloth, in that way.

Krystyna Adamczyk: Is any other face features of the being were visible, as brows, teeth?

JW: There were no brows visible… I don’t know what they had in fact – some make up or masks. They only got slanted eyes. I could see some white in their eye corners. And their teeth were also white in color… That’s all about them.

KA: Have you witnessed the craft disappearance while your retreat from that place?

JW: I haven’t seen anything. I could only observe the craft only in a distance of 15 m. because it then hid behind some bushes. I was in hurry to reach home and inform my sons about the incident… That’s all about it…

KA: Can you describe the process when you was treated with the icicle-form food? Were there any sounds when they began to crush it into smaller pieces?

JW: There were no crushing sounds. This food was crushing as hardened dough, without any sounds.

KA: Was it a terrifying experience or something of utmost importance for you?

JW: Just a bit [terrifying], but I’m not very timorous man at all… so I wasn’t very scared.

KA: Who they were according to your opinion? Who those people are? Are they of terrestrial or of extraterrestrial origin?

JW: I can’t say anything about it and I’m not orientated in similar matters since I’m not a scientist of some kind but a simple farmer. Therefore, I don’t know. I noticed that they were small, of the same height and all of them rather snappy in nature. But I don’t know anything about their origin.

KA: You have mentioned that they were in some costumes and have greenish faces. Were there any other specific details making they different from us?

JW: I noticed then one thing, i.e. around the each one finger there was a thin and tiny fin [he means webbed hands ]. But I don’t know the number of their fingers since I didn’t count, just saw them. And on their upper necks, in place where hair began, they have something resembling lumps. It was round and protruding but I don’t know about it’s nature – whether it was a anatomical part of them or they had something hidden them.

KA: Did you notice any brews or hair covering their bodies?

JW: I didn’t notice any hair since their whole body was covered with the suit that also obscured part of their foreheads. But they had no brows I think… They were completely dressed in it – the same one-pieced suit covered their legs and heads. They had no shoes.

KA: Can you say us finally when the incident took place?

JW: It was on 10th day of May, before 8 a.m., because when I returned and my wife looked at the clock it was about 7:50 a.m.

KA: The day it occurred was…

JW: 10th May [wondering]… It was in Wednesday…

HP: We recorded this conversation with Mr. Jan Wolski from Emilcin on July the 6th 1978. With Mr. Wolski talked: Henryk Pomorski and Krystyna Adamczyk. Thank you Mr. Wolski and see you soon!

JW: You welcome!

HP: Goodbye!

JW: Goodbye!

Additional Information:

For Wolski himself, his growing popularity became a serious problem:

“Do you know what people then talked about me? They called me an alcoholic or said that it was a mere dream! The worst although were the trips that began coming here. Sometimes there were up to 14 coaches with tourist at once. They harassed me and didn’t let to work. And trampled my meadow…”

The whole event was thoroughly researched by the then famous ufologist, Zbigniew Blania-Bolnar, who passed away in 2003. He and his team of researchers, many and from different professional areas (psychiatrist, psychologist, biologist, hypnotist, physician, physicist etc.) – possibly conducted one of the best-documented researches regarding the matter.

Wolski gave an interview to Henryk Pomorski & Krystyna Adamczyk in 1978, two months after his experience. Scientists and sociologists from University of Lodz made careful consideration and study of Jan's story, and determined that he truly experienced what he said he did. Wolski died in 1990, fully asserting the veracity of his bizarre experience to the end.

----------

Another witness seems to have seen the same (or identical) craft, although the place and time were different. Henryk Marciniak saw an object in a small town called Golina (mid-western Poland) on 27th September 1978.

In the afternoon of that day he went to collect mushrooms on a clearing. Suddenly he saw an unusual craft. With some delay, he eventually took his motorcycle and rode towards the strange object. In a matter of instants he saw an open doorway (which was not there before) and two beings stood on both sides of Marciniak, and he extended his hand in a welcome gesture. The aliens got interested in Marciniak’s motorcycle and by using gestures asked him to take a ride. Meanwhile a buzzing sound came from inside the craft, and the beings slowly come back to the object which then goes up and disappears.

It’s not the end of the Emilcin events.

- Wolski was not the only person in Emilcin to see the strange craft and beings; two boys, Adam and Agnieszka Popiowek also saw them.

- The owner of a farm in Emilcin, some 200 metres away from the clearing heard an unusual noise!

- Two men, driving from Warsaw to Opole Lubelskie, saw a strange object in the sky

- Tadeusz Baranowski, an artist who made sketches during research in Emilcin, has found feathers of black birds – strangely cut!

----------

Comic strip version of the events

CONCLUSION

The depth of the investigation undertaken by sociologist Dr. Blania Bolnar and Dr. Ryszard Kitlinsky, a psychologist from the University of Lodz, is truly admirable. Some of the tests administered to Wolski included a theme apperception test, an IQ test in the Wechsler’s scale for adults, a psychogalvanometric measurement of psychic tension (polygraph), as well as opthalmological and clinical tests. A full physical check-up was also included, revealing that Wolski was in excellent health despite his age and that he had “an exceptional good quality of the sight, rarely encountered in that corresponding age group.”

Bolnar’s report in Prof. Zigel’s book, “Psychological and sociological evaluation of Jan Wolski”, includes sections on “Motifs from a viewpoint of a lie hypothesis” (none according to the report), his Emotions, Memory, Mental development, Susceptibility to suggestion, Fantasy ability, Inclination to lie, the Witness as a member of a social group, the Witness and the mass-media, Leisure, Interests, Vices, Religion, and finally an “Evaluation of the witness from the point of view of results of his experience.” The scientists found that Wolski was a remarkably credible witness. For instance, wrote Bolnar, “results of the thematic perception test fully indicates that the witness has no ability whatsoever to invent stories of any kind. His mental creativity is not apparent. He is unable to tell a fictitious tale, even a simple one.” Likewise, extensive questioning and background checks revealed that “the witness is an honest, truthful, decent person, and this was confirmed in cross-examinations.” He was highly regarded within his community and was not known to drink alcohol, smoke or exhibit any other social vice.

Above all, it is Wolski’s own practical, down-to-earth personality that is most convincing. The witness showed a general “low inclination to fear” and “has not recognized the situation in which he found himself as threatening.” As to the behavior of the beings, “the subject has emphasized at several occasions that they were polite and treated him with courtesy and consideration.” Drs. Kitlinsky and Bolnar finally examined and rated several hypothesis including a hoax, a hallucination or dream, a religious apparition, a suggestion or coercion by a third party, the landing of a helicopter or experimental craft, etc. All these hypotheses were rated extremely low by the scientists (usually within 1 or 2%). The exception was what they called the “Summary hypothesis: the event with the witness was an objective reality. At the crucial moment, he noticed and stated his experience in accordance with reality, has described a behavior of beings, the arrangement and behavior of the craft, development of events, etc.” This hypothesis was rated 90% by Kitlinsky and 98% by Bolnar. Their final “Concluding hypothesis” was that “this case indicates the existence of a phenomenon unknown to science.”

This monument was built in the area of the sighting to memorialize Wolski's experience

Sasquatch Habituation Location: Update

I came across an article today (posted at 'Just the Facts?') about John Bindernagel where he states that Sasquatch is just waiting to be discovered in B.C., but too few want to admit or investigate it. Canada has been a particular hot spot for the past few years...but not just in British Columbia. There have been credible accounts throughout the country.

A few weeks ago, I mentioned that I had knowledge of a Sasquatch habituation location and that I would be gathering the available evidence before disclosing any information. I am now working on a narrative that I plan to post in the near future. In the meantime I have decided, with the permission of the witness, to reveal a bit of what I have so far.

I don't plan to release the actual location but I will say that it is in the Atlantic Maritimes of eastern Canada. It is a somewhat remote area with sufficient game and hidden space for a population of Sasquatch to thrive.

There are, from what I can gather, more than 4 hominids in the group...simply because of the evidence and that 4 hominids have been seen and identified since 2008. This group included a female (seen in 2008) and a juvenile (seen in 2009). The anecdotal evidence and sighting timeline is impressive. The witness knows of one person, outside of his family, that has seen members of the Sasquatch group.

The witness has been unable to capture identifiable images because of the lack of available light...but he has offered effective foot track and scat images as well as other non-conclusive photo evidence. Hair samples were submitted to a laboratory in Calgary for identification. If other physical evidence is discovered, I will have it tested. The current available evidence has been forwarded to other Bigfoot researchers for their opinions.

I really don't want to disclose much more at this point but I didn't want to leave the readers hanging after my previous announcement. I am working to get the story to you.

Again, it is important to the witness and I that the specific area is not revealed. We want these beings to continue flourishing if, in fact, they are terrestrial. I have preached the 'interdimensional' theory and I still believe that some of these beings may have some supernatural aspects to them. But I also believe that there is solid proof that there are terrestrial groups of these hominids living among us.

Below is an adult track image:

Just the Facts?: The Battle to Find Sasquatch -- American Vampires -- Steven Spielberg Coming to Gettysburg

The Battle to Find Sasquatch

The sasquatch is just waiting to be discovered in B.C., but too few want to admit or investigate it, says a Vancouver Island wildlife biologist and author.

“And we have what has to be the best sasquatch habitat anywhere on the planet right here on the B.C. coast,” said Courtenay’s John Bindernagel, author of the 2010 book The Discovery of the Sasquatch.

“The question for me is no longer ‘Does the sasquatch exist or not?’ but ‘Why has the existence of the sasquatch been resisted for so long?’ ” Bindernagel said.

Now 70, he believes enough sightings, tracks and other evidence of the large ape-like sasquatch — Coast Salish for hairy man — have been collected to provide evidence of the creature’s existence in B.C. and North America.

Bindernagel has collected casts of massive, human-like tracks from Strathcona Provincial Park and even heard a “whoo, whoo, whoop” call. It’s similar to a chimpanzee’s call in Uganda, but he believes it is a sasquatch calling out for its own kind.

Bindernagel comes to the investigation of the sasquatch as a scientist. He studied at the University of Guelph and the University of Wisconsin and holds a PhD in wildlife biology. He has worked in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and Central America, teaching, conducting research, surveys and preparing and implementing wildlife management plans and conservation measures before returning to Vancouver Island, where he worked as a consultant. The Great New England Vampire Panic

Children playing near a hillside gravel mine found the first graves. One ran home to tell his mother, who was skeptical at first—until the boy produced a skull.

Because this was Griswold, Connecticut, in 1990, police initially thought the burials might be the work of a local serial killer named Michael Ross, and they taped off the area as a crime scene. But the brown, decaying bones turned out to be more than a century old. The Connecticut state archaeologist, Nick Bellantoni, soon determined that the hillside contained a colonial-era farm cemetery. New England is full of such unmarked family plots, and the 29 burials were typical of the 1700s and early 1800s: The dead, many of them children, were laid to rest in thrifty Yankee style, in simple wood coffins, without jewelry or even much clothing, their arms resting by their sides or crossed over their chests.

Except, that is, for Burial Number 4.

Bellantoni was interested in the grave even before the excavation began. It was one of only two stone crypts in the cemetery, and it was partially visible from the mine face.

Scraping away soil with flat-edged shovels, and then brushes and bamboo picks, the archaeologist and his team worked through several feet of earth before reaching the top of the crypt. When Bellantoni lifted the first of the large, flat rocks that formed the roof, he uncovered the remains of a red-painted coffin and a pair of skeletal feet. They lay, he remembers, “in perfect anatomical position.” But when he raised the next stone, Bellantoni saw that the rest of the individual “had been completely...rearranged.” The skeleton had been beheaded; skull and thighbones rested atop the ribs and vertebrae. “It looked like a skull-and-crossbones motif, a Jolly Roger. I’d never seen anything like it,” Bellantoni recalls.

Subsequent analysis showed that the beheading, along with other injuries, including rib fractures, occurred roughly five years after death. Somebody had also smashed the coffin. Continue reading at Smithsonian Magazine

American Vampire Stories

The Story of Mercy Brown

When mentioning vampires, people in New England like to tell the story of Mercy Brown. In Exeter, Rhode Island residents speculated that after Mercy Browns' death she had in fact become a vampire, that she was rising from the grave and feeding on her sick brother. She had followed her mother and sister to the grave and the people of the area were in a panic. As a result, on a cold March afternoon, Mercy's father and some of his neighbors dug up her grave to see if she had indeed changed into a vampire.

It was found that she had shifted in her coffin and her mouth and heart were full of fresh blood. The heart was cut from her chest and burned on a large rock to stop Mary from venturing from the grave. Some of the ashes were even fed to her brother as a cure but he still died two months later. After he passed, the body was staked through the chest and tied in the coffin so he didn't turn into a vampire like Mercy.

The New Orleans Vampire Murders

In 1984 nine people were found dead in various sections of the French Quarter of New Orleans. They all had been murdered by having their throats torn out. The paramedics responding to the scenes were struck by the fact that there was no blood at the scenes...something or someone had simply sucked all the blood directly from the victims. Police to this day do not have a suspect in this case....the murder spree ended as quickly as it had began. Rumors suggested that it was the work of a rogue vampire that was destroyed by the elder vampire sect of New Orleans because of pressure placed by authorities on the known vampire community in city.

In 1933, on two different nights, police were called to Royal Street where on each night young prostitutes were found laying in a alley with their throats torn out. Both women had been dead only a few minutes when they were found but no blood was found at the scenes. A local resident who lived above one of the murder scenes claimed a dark figure was observed leaning over one of the victims and people began to scream for police. The witness said the dark figure had climbed over a 12 foot wall at the end of the alley with little effort. It appeared to the witness that the dark figure was a man dressed in a black cape and hat. Police searched but found nothing. Both murders have yet to be solved.

The Vampires of Dillsboro, North Carolina

In the spring of 1788 a family setup housekeeping in the small mountain community of Dillsboro N.C. The family name was Alfort and there were rumors that they had descended from royalty. They bought land by the river and built what was then a very nice large southern colonial home. Dr. Alfort opened up an office and pharmacy in a few rooms in the front of the house. The local people were at first really happy that a new doctor had arrived in their community...but very quickly this attitude was about to change.

Two men both who had gone to the new doctor to be treated for gout suddenly died. Both men had been well liked members of the community and the circumstances angered many of the residents. However in a short time the local minister had brokered peace in the community and everything seemed to be fine. However this calm was short lived.

That Fall the young daughter of the minister was found dead in her bed with puncture marks to her throat. The minister's wife swore she had seen a dark form hovering over her daughter and she screamed but it was too late and the child quickly succumb to the attack.

The incident caused a huge outcry in the town and the people of the area started to claim a vampire or a group of vampires was in their midst. For many nights groups of men ventured out and searched but found nothing. However some men claimed to have seen a large black bat-like creature fly over them. A few nights after the sighting a young boy ran down the hill to his grandfather's house and proclaimed that something was up the hill in his house attacking his parents. The grandfather summoned other men and they ran to the house but only found the parents and their two young daughters, who were dead with puncture wounds to their necks. The area was immediately alerted...soldiers were called in and searched the area. By February of 1789 the community had quieted down.

Then one evening screams were heard and when men arrived they witnessed a black form of a human run from the house, run down the hill and into the Alfort house. When the village men went into the house where the screams had come from they found the bodies of a young couple with vicious bite marks to their throats. Almost at once more men came and they were told that the murderer had ran down the hill and into the Alfort house. When the search party got to the Alfort house Dr. Alfort refused to let them in. However as soon as the sheriff arrived they dragged Dr. Alfort outside and tied him to a tree. When the men entered the house they were surprised at what they found. The upstairs bedrooms each had beds but it was clear that no one had slept in them. When the sheriff and search party went downstairs they found three caskets and Mrs. Alfort, who was dressed in black, lying in one of the caskets and very much alive. She hissed and cursed at them as she was pulled from the casket.

Later that night the sheriff and the village minister announced to the crowd assembled outside the Alfort house that the Alforts and their son were vampires. The Alforts were summarily hanged and then placed back inside the house. The house was set on fire and burned to the ground. However the couple's 15 year old son was not found and never seen in the area again. There were no further unusual murders in the area.

The St. Augustine Stalker

In 1933 intense terror shrouded over St. Augustine, Florida. On the morning of October 5th a man visiting his brother discovered the bodies of his brother, his wife and their three children. All of the dead had open wounds in their throats where something had fed and sucked the blood from the victims. The Turner family all appeared have been dead for two to three days at the time they were discovered. Every mirror in the house had been broken and several crosses and other religious artifacts the family owned had been thrown out of a back window into the yard. The family cat had been savagely killed and it's headless body was tossed on the hall floor. The head was never found. Blood was smeared on walls throughout the house...it was clear that someone had taken a lot of time in doing so.

Neighbors said that they heard nothing but another man a few doors down said that he saw a very dark man dressed all in black leave the house just before daylight a day or two before. He said the man walked past him and he clearly heard the man make a hissing sound at him as he walked by.

Police at the time conducted extensive searches...bloodhounds were even brought in but no trace of whoever or whatever committed the horrible crime was ever found. The local newspapers both placed the same headline across the front "Vampire Stalks St. Augustine." In time, the murders faded from memory...it's still part of public record though the case remains unsolved. - Phantoms & Monsters

Man offers his alligators to swim at children's pool parties

Although critics argue that mixing alligators and 8-year-olds is bad parenting, Florida alligator wrangler Bob Barrett calls it a party. And for $175, Barrett will bring a gator directly to a home.

Tampa-area parents looking for something more than a clown or pizza for their children's birthday parties now need look no further than Barrett's Alligator Attraction, which will bring an alligator straight to their backyard pool to swim with the children. "It just took off like wildfire, Barrett said. "Everybody loves having the gator pool parties."

Barrett runs The Alligator Attraction of Madeira Beach, Fla., where visitors can pay to hold and feed rescued baby gators. He says the inspiration for his party idea came when business was sluggish in the summer and he saw other options that were available for children's parties. "If you're 9, 10 or 11 years old, you've already had the 'jumparoo' house, the bounce house, you've had the pizza party, you've had the clown party,"

Barrett said. "You get to have a pool party with a gator. It's a very popular party." This is all safe, said Barrett, who tapes the baby gators' mouths shut before the party. He says that because the muscles they use to open their mouths are weak, there is virtually no risk of children being bitten. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has determined that Barrett isn't doing anything illegal, but added in a statement, "We will say that this is not something that we encourage."

Steven Spielberg to speak in Gettysburg

Steven Spielberg is coming back to Gettysburg.

The Academy Award-winning director is slated to speak Nov. 19 at Soldiers' National Cemetery as part of Dedication Day, an annual event held in honor of President Lincoln's Gettysburg Address.

The event, which has been held every year since 1938, is hosted by The Lincoln Fellowship of Pennsylvania, Gettysburg National Military Park and Visitor Center, and the Gettysburg Foundation. A wreath-laying service at the Soldiers' National Monument is scheduled for 9:30 a.m., followed by a ceremony featuring Spielberg as the guest speaker. Past speakers have included William Rehnquist, Colin Powell, Sandra Day O'Connor, and Ken Burns.

Spielberg was chosen for this year's ceremony because it coincides with the release of his new movie, "Lincoln," which will open in theaters on Nov. 9 in select cities and then to a wider audience on Nov.16.

"The film will not be a battle film", said Tina Grim, who chairs the Dedication Day committee. "Instead it will focus on Lincoln's political achievements in his last four months."

Based off of Doris Kearns Goodwin's best-selling biography, "Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln," the movie will star Daniel Day-Lewis, Tommy Lee Jones, and Sally Field.

For the fellowship, inviting Spielberg to speak so close to the opening of this modern historical film accomplishes one of the main goals of Dedication Day.

"It is really a reminder of the significance and relevance of the speech today," Grim said. "And our speakers recognize that and are willing to make the commitment."

Spielberg's speech and Dedication Day wreath-laying ceremony will be free and open to the public. All residents are invited to enjoy this event and its connection to Gettysburg.

"The address has become forever linked to Gettysburg and the ceremony will be held very close to the actual site where Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address," Grim said. "It doesn't get more powerful than that."

Spielberg and Day-Lewis were spotted in Gettysburg last year at the David Wills House, where Lincoln slept before delivering the Gettysburg Address. The director posed for pictures, and signed the museum's guest book: "Thank you for keeping our history." - Eveningsun

NOTE: If you have never been to Gettysburg, I suggest you make the trip. I grew up near there (Hanover, Pa) and spent a lot of time on the battlefield as a boy...in fact, I used to give private tours at one time. There are a few unpublicized locations where the paranormal activity is really intense...maybe I'll discuss it in my next book. From my prologue: "I’ve been interested in the strange and unusual for as long as I can remember. My childhood includes many bicycle jaunts to the Gettysburg battlefield and other odd locations that would draw my attention. After a while, I started to realize that I was sensitive to spiritual energies that would occasionally surface...sometimes manifesting into apparitions that would continue performing soldiers’ duties. Muffled sounds of drums, gunfire, cannons and mortal suffering were not uncommon. As well, the smell of gunpowder, blood and death hung in the air like morning fog. I never got used to the horrible sensations though I was fascinated by the opportunity to witness the phenomena before me." - Lon

The Bizarre and Futile Search For Jimmy Hoffa's 'Supposed Dead' Body

The following articles, including the most recent speculation, are a look back at the bizarre and futile search for Jimmy Hoffa's 'supposed dead' body...Lon

Have They Found Jimmy Hoffa's Body...Again?

Police were standing watch over a suburban Detroit driveway on Thursday where authorities have been told the body of former missing Teamsters boss Jimmy Hoffa may have been buried.

The curious were walking or driving by the Roseville home where state officials planned to take soil samples Friday in the search for human decomposition.

Roseville Police Chief James Berlin previously said officials were "not claiming it's Jimmy Hoffa, the timeline doesn't add up. We're investigating a body that may be at the location."

Hoffa was last seen on July 30, 1975, outside a suburban Detroit restaurant where he was supposed to meet with a New Jersey Teamsters boss and a Detroit Mafia captain. His body has not been found despite a number of searches over the years.

Innumerable theories about the demise of the union boss have surfaced over time. Among them: He was entombed in concrete at Giants Stadium in New Jersey, ground up and thrown in a Florida swamp or obliterated in a mob-owned fat-rendering plant. The search has continued under a backyard pool north of Detroit in 2003, under the floor of a Detroit home in 2004 and at a horse farm northwest of Detroit in 2006.

After Roseville police received the most recent tip, the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality used ground-penetrating radar on a 12-foot-by-12-foot patch beneath the driveway, said agency spokesman Brad Wurfel.

It found "that the earth had been disturbed at some point in time," Berlin said.

The environmental quality department will take soil samples Friday that will be sent to a forensic anthropologist at Michigan State University to "have it tested for human decomposition," Berlin said.

Results are not expected until next week.

Cindi Frank snapped cellphone photos Thursday of the backyard cordoned off with yellow police tape. The 57-year-old Roseville resident said her father was a Teamsters driver and Hoffa's disappearance and numerous searches always have interested her family.

Frank said if Hoffa's body is discovered, "it will be a big deal. ... This has just been one of those unsolved mysteries." - AP

Giants Stadium is Coming Down...FBI Not Looking For Hoffa's Remains

In the November 1989 issue of Playboy, Donald "Tony the Greek" Frankos said Jimmy Hoffa's body was buried at Giants Stadium.

Cut in pieces. Put in a steel drum.

Emtombed in concrete at Section 107, near the end zone.

Gives new meaning to the term "coffin corner," joked Sports Illustrated.

Twenty years later, a new billion-dollar stadium is rising in the Meadowlands, and the old Giants Stadium will host one last round of pro football - and Bruce Springsteen concerts.

Next year, the walls will come a-tumblin' down.

So, will the authorities check for the remains of the Hoffa, the legendary Teamsters boss, last seen alive in Detroit in July 1975?

Apparently not.

The FBI officially punted that idea back in 1989.

"Never say never, but it is a remote possibility he is buried there," said Special Agent Hal Helterhoff then, after the investigation failed to find "any substantiation."

The teardown changes nothing, said Special Agent Bryan Travers yesterday.

"If there was some credible information, we wouldn't wait until the stadium was being demolished," he said. "We would go in there and aggressively look for it ...

"We would never wait this long. ... We would have no problem digging a giant hole at the 50-yard line if we thought there was reason to act," he said.

"No, there are no plans," said Alice McGillion, spokeswoman for the New Meadowlands Stadium Corp., the company formed to build the privately financed new home of the Giants and the New York Jets, and tear down the old one.

The decision's up to law enforcement, but so far no agencies have spoken up, she said.

"The stadium will taken down next spring, and the area will become a parking lot," she said.

Nationally, the last big buzz about the Hoffa case was in 2006, when the FBI's Detroit office, acting on a tip, brought a bulldozer to the Hidden Dreams horse farm in Milford Township, Mich.

No hidden Hoffa.

In 2004, investigators tested bloodstained floorboards from a Detroit home, because of published allegations that Frank Sheeran, a Philadelphia and Delaware union leader, confessed, just before he died, to shooting Hoffa.

The blood, though, wasn't Hoffa's.

A backyard pool was excavated the year before, again to no avail.

But it can't be said that no hair from his head was ever found.

A strand was recovered from a car that an associate, Charles "Chuckie" O'Brien, drove the night of the disappearance. Testing identified the hair as Hoffa's in 2001.

Other theories: His remains were dumped in a Florida swamp, rendered in a fat-rendering plant, became part of a scrap-metal block shipped to Japan.

No plans have yet been made to sell or auctions parts of the old Giants Stadium, McGillion said.

One wonders if mementos of legendary Section 107 might fetch a nice price with collectors.

As for an old 50-gallon drum showing up, encased in concrete there - well, that might be a case of Jimmy Hoffa rolling over in his grave. - Philly.com

"I AM JIMMY HOFFA"

Tom Dawson, 63 and retired, was walking with his two dogs from his trailer home to a nearby farm when a "circular shaped space ship" with a dome and portholes, 40-50 ft in diameter and 12-14 ft high, hovered several feet off the ground in a field in front of him. He immediately noticed that he was unable to move a muscle as well as his dogs and the cattle in the field seemed likewise to be immobilized.

A hatch in the object opened, a ramp was extended, and 7 strange looking humanoids 5 ft tall emerged, five men and two women. The first stepped down cautiously, as if to test the solidity of the ground; then the rest followed, with two taking up sentry positions at the hatch. They were all hairless, with skin "as white as a flour sack," their noses were sharp and turned up, their ears were pointed, and they had no necks. One of the men and one of the women were completely nude. The clothing of the rest, male and female alike, was very beautiful with silk like shoes with pointed, turned up toes.

The humanoids cautiously approached Dawson and gave him a kind of physical examination, placing on his head a skullcap with cords connecting it to a hoop bearing dials. They dropped his trousers and lifted his shirt for the examination, passing the hoop over his body. While the examination was in progress, a loud voice came from the object, shouting three times "I am Jimmy Hoffa" (!) a fourth repetition was cut off, and the voice was not heard again.

After completing the examination, all returned to the craft except two men, who walked about 10 feet away and "went into a conference." They had very shrill voices, and although Dawson was unable to comprehend what it was they said, he thought he heard the word "Jupiter." He had the impression they were debating whether or not to take him on board; at any rate, they did not, and the leader passed his palm across his chest as though to signal good-bye. They reentered the ship, closed the hatch, and took off. He saw the object rise to 75 feet then, in a wink, it was out of sight. Dawson was then freed of his paralysis; he ran directly to his next-door neighbor, but was so excited he could say nothing more than "space ship!" He was taken to a hospital and treated for hysteria.

Book claims Teamsters boss Jimmy Hoffa was buried in cement at General Motors' HQ

The disappearance of Teamsters union boss Jimmy Hoffa remains one of America's most enduring mysteries.

But now, nearly four decades after Hoffa vanished, his driver has claimed he knows where he is buried – and how he got there.

Marvin Elkind said Hoffa was killed by a mob enforcer and buried in the foundations of the towering General Motors’ HQ in Detroit, Michigan.

‘It was his own people who did it,’ Mr Elkind said in excerpts of a new book published in the New York Post, adding Mafia member Tony Jack insinuated he was responsible.

The startling claim comes 36 years after Hoffa, who led the labour union for 13 years, vanished while on his way to meet two mobsters he knew well, Anthony Provenzano and Tony Jack – real name Anthony Giacalone.

Mr Elkind explains how, during a Teamsters conference in 1985, he was among a group of men walking from the city’s Omni International when the Center came into view.

Tony Jack nodded toward the tower’s base and said, ‘Say good morning to Jimmy Hoffa, boys’, Mr Elkind alleges in The Weasel: A Double Life in the Mobby Adrian Humphreys.

He also describes the rush to build the Renaissance Center following the disappearance of Hoffa – and claims the body was buried in wet cement.

‘There was a mad rush to get the concrete poured,’ the New York Post quotes the book as saying.

Hoffa was declared legally dead July 30, 1982, when he would have been 69.

Secrets: Elkind makes the claims in The Weasel: A Double Life in the Mob by Canadian journalist Adrian Humphreys

He was a union stalwart, serving as its General President from 1958 to 1971 and playing a key part in its growth and development.

During his term as its leader, membership surged to more than 1.5 million members, becoming the largest single union in the country.

As well as a role as Jimmy Hoffa's driver, Mr Elkind had careers as a loan collector, a boxer - and a police informant.

He was working as a busboy in a Toronto restaurant frequented by Jimmy Hoffa's crew when he was poached as a driver.

Mr Elkind initially said he didn't want the job, but he was told: 'Nobody's asking you.'

He began testifying against the mob when police discovered he'd worked with a con man. They gave him an ultimatum - tell or be charged.

The book, by Canadian reporter Adrian Humphreys, follows his life.

It takes its title from Mr Elkind's nickname, The Weasel, which he claims was his boxing moniker - rather than to do with his snitching. - dailymail

Wood Ape Sightings: Correlations to Annual Rainfall Totals, Waterways, Human Population Densities and Black Bear Habitat Zones

NOTE: don't forget...these are the people who want to kill a Bigfoot

In Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana, anecdotes about huge, hairy, apelike creatures said to dwell in the deep woods and, occasionally, near the peripheries of rural communities, have accumulated for centuries. Many of these accounts were related by highly reliable and trustworthy individuals, people who had nothing to gain by telling their stories.

Indeed, in many cases, these witnesses became the subjects of much ridicule, even among close friends and relatives. To the present day, most witnesses hesitate to share their incredible stories of seeing this strange, undocumented animal. Their reticence should come as no surprise given the treatment of the subject by the mass media and some mainstream scientists.

There are many skeptics; their concerns are legitimate. Skeptics demand to know why no skeletal remains have been found; they want to know why no hunters have killed one, or why no driver has collided with one on a secluded country highway. Would not a large primate, skeptics ask, leave an undeniable, discernable mark on the environment in perhaps the same manner as mountain gorillas (Gorilla gorilla beringei)? Such questions are not invalid. Expecting skeptics to accept the likelihood of such a species existing beneath our proverbial noses may be asking just a tad too much. Nevertheless, the body of anecdotal accounts and accompanying evidence seems to indicate just such a possibility. Continue reading at Texas Bigfoot

'Vampire Squid From Hell'

The secret life of a mysterious creature that feeds on the decaying dead in the unlit depths of the ocean has been revealed.

The squid is so weird that it is known as a ‘phylogenetic relic’. It has the honour of occupying a taxonomic category all of its own, combining features of octopuses and squids in a unique evolutionary formula that has survived for millions of years.

Writing in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B, a pair of scientists in California report on 30 years of chance encounters with vampire squids by robot submarine explorers, laboratory experiments and dissections.

Lone species

Vampyroteuthis infernalis – the ‘Squid from Hell’ – is the only species in the order Vampyromorpha, where it was placed in 1903.

The 13-centimetre (five-inch) cephalopod lives in temperate and tropical oceans, inhabiting waters at depths between roughly 600 and 900 metres (2,000–3,000 feet), a niche habitat where at the lowest levels there is just enough oxygen to support life.

It uses huge 2.5-centimetre (one-inch) eyes to detect the slightest gleam of movement, and deploys dark-blue bioluminescence to cloak its jelly-like body from predators below when it drifts at higher depths.

Unlike its latter-day cousins, the vampire squid does not tuck into living prey, they say.

‘Detritivore’: corpse-eater

Instead, examination of the squid's digestive tract, faeces and regurgitations suggest it is a ‘detritivore’ – it eats the corpses (or what remains of them) of larvae, crustaceans and zooplankton that sink gently to the ocean floor.

A bigger puzzle, though, is a feature of the vampire squid's mouth.

It opens up like a black umbrella, comprising a web that encompasses eight octopus-like arms, studded with suckers and finger-like spines called cirri.

It also has a second pair of arms called retractile filaments that can reach out to lengths that are far bigger than that of the squid itself, and can then be withdrawn into pockets within the web.

Unique to the vampire squid, these sticky filaments were long thought to be sensors to detect living prey and predators.

“Unlike any other cepholapod”

But the evidence says they are used to reach out and snare morsels of food, say Hendrik Joving and Bruce Robison at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute.

The scraps are then glued together into a little ball using mucus from secretory tissue in the suckers, and then transported to the squid's jaws by the cirri.

“Vampyroteuthis' feeding behaviour is unlike any other cephalopod," the authors said in the study.

"[It] reveals a unique adaptation that allows these animals to spend most of their life at depths where oxygen concentrations are very low, but where predators are few and typical cephalopod food is scarce." - cosmosmagazine

Can a Foil Hat Keep People (or Aliens) from Reading Your Thoughts?

Let’s say that the conspiracy theorists are right. Let’s say some malevolent group—the government, powerful corporations, extraterrestrials—really is trying to read and/or control the thoughts of the Average Joe with radio waves. Would the preferred headgear of the paranoid, a foil helmet, really keep The Man and alien overlords out of our brains?

The scientific reasoning behind the foil helmet is that it acts as a Faraday cage, an enclosure made up of a conducting material that shields its interior from external electrostatic charges and electromagnetic radiation by distributing them around its exterior and dissipating them. While sometimes these enclosures are actual cages, they come in many forms, and most of us have probably dealt with one type or another. Elevators, the scan rooms that MRI machines sit in, “booster bags” that shoplifters sometimes use to circumvent electronic security tags, cables like USB or TV coaxial cables, and even the typical household microwave all provide shielding as Faraday cages.

While the underlying concept is good, the typical foil helmet fails in design and execution. An effective Faraday cage fully encloses whatever it’s shielding, but a helmet that doesn’t fully cover the head doesn’t fully protect it. If the helmet is designed or worn with a loose fit, radiofrequency electromagnetic radiation can still get up underneath the brim from below and reveal your innermost thoughts to the reptilian humanoids or the Bilderberg Group. The 'Big Hairy Man' of Alaska

I noticed the following article making its way around the internet today:

Arctic Bigfoot? Balding polar bear? Inquiring minds want to know

Is there a Bigfoot on Alaska’s North Slope? One Barrow family thinks so, and it has them worried about a remote cabin property they own about 35 miles south of America’s northernmost community.

Sarah Skin has been camping at the cabin every year for the last half-century. In the last three years, she and her family say they've repeatedly seen 10-foot tall, bipedal creatures that are black, brown or grayish in color. Skin said that they've seen the creatures three years running, each time in the fall when the family heads to the cabin to hunt for caribou.

Before that, she’d never seen anything like the Bigfoot, as she refers to the mysterious beasts, anywhere near her cabin, located about halfway between Barrow and the community of Atqasuk.

“People from a long time ago used to see them, I guess,” Skin said. “I’m 50 years old and I've been camping out here my whole life, and I've never seen anything like this, ever.” - alaskadispatch

As the previous article states (through the link) there is a tradition of hairy hominids in Alaska...including the following:

Nantiinaq: Half Man, Half Beast

homertribune.com - Malania Helen Kehl, Nanwalek’s eldest resident, is frequently called upon around the village to impart her memories of how life used to be on this southern-most tip of the Kenai Peninsula.

Among her remembrances are medicines used to heal the sick and ways of preserving sea lion meat in barrels for winter. She also is one of the last to tell the ghostly story of how the village of Port Chatham came to be deserted; why the abandoned town was shunned, and those who once lived there vowed never to return.

Malania was born Jan. 25, 1934 at Port Chatham, then a small village founded at the edge of a peaceful moorage. The village once offered shelter for many people, including Capt. Nathaniel Portlock’s ship on his 1786 Alaska expedition. But when Malania was a baby, the family abruptly moved away from Chatham, leaving the house and every board of its frame behind.

What frightening situation caused John and Helen Romanoff to take their children and flee to Nanwalek?

“We left our houses and the school, and started all new here,” Malania said in a recent interview, speaking in her traditional Sugt’stun through translator Sally Ash. “There was plentiful land here for gardening and people. My parents built a house on the beach.”

What had frightened Malania’s parents hadn’t been a single event. Over a “long period of time,” a nantiinaq (Nan-te-nuk) – or big hairy creature – was reportedly terrorizing villagers. And Malania also told of the spirit of a woman dressed in draping black clothes that would come out of the cliffs.

“Her dress was so long she would drag it,” Malania said. “She had a very white face and would disappear back into the cliffs.”

The goose-bumped terror felt when people encountered these spirits was nothing compared to what happened to Malania’s godfather, Andrew Kamluck. He was logging in 1931, when someone or something hit him over the head with a piece of log-moving equipment. The blow reportedly killed him instantly.

Malania isn’t the only one to tell of strange events at Port Chatham. Port Graham Elder, Simeon Kvasnikoff, said he remembers when nantiinaq was blamed for the disappearance of a gold miner.

“This one guy over there had a little place where he was digging for gold,” Kvasnikoff said. “He went up there one time and never came back. No one found any sign of him.”

Another story recounted the experience of a sawmill owner named Tom Larsen, who had a job cutting wood for the old fish traps. He told of spotting nantiinaq on the beach once. After going back to his house to get his gun, he returned to the beach and “the thing looked at him,” Kvasnikoff said. For some reason, Larsen decided against firing a shot.

In an April 15, 1973 issue of the Anchorage Daily News, a feature article told of the abandoned cannery town of Portlock near Port Chatham. The writer had learned the story during an evening spent with the school teacher and his wife at English Bay (Nanwalek) while on a boat trip.

The story is told:

“Portlock began its existence sometime after the turn of the century as a cannery town. In 1921, a post office was established there, and for a time the residents, mostly natives of Russian-Aleut mix, lived in peace with their picturesque mountain-and-sea setting.”

According to the ADN story, sometime in the beginning years of World War II, rumors began to seep along the Kenai Peninsula that things were not right in Portlock. Men from the cannery town would reportedly go up into the hills to hunt Dall sheep and bear, and never return. Worse yet, sometimes stories would circulate about mutilated bodies that were swept down into the lagoon, torn and dismembered in a way that bears could not, or would not, do.

“Tales were told of villagers tracking moose over soft ground. They would find giant, man-like tracks over 18 inches in length closing upon those of the moose, the signs of a short struggle where the grass had been matted down, then only the deep tracks of the manlike animal departing toward the high, fog-shrouded mountains …”
The article goes on to tell how the fed-up townfolk decided to move en masse, and by 1950, the U.S. Post office had closed there.

Even into more recent times, nantiinaq reports haven’t stopped entirely. A man who prefers to remain anonymous tells his story.

“In 1990, while I was working as a paramedic in Anchorage, we got called out on an alarm for a man having a heart attack at the state jail in Eagle River. He was a Native man in his 70s, and after I got him stabilized with IVs, O2 and cardiac drugs, my partner and I began to transport him to the Native Hospital in Anchorage.”

En route to the hospital, the paramedic and the Native man, an “Aleut” from Port Graham, talked about hunting. The paramedic had been to Dog Fish Bay and was once weathered in there.

“This old man sat up on the gurney and grabbed me by the front of my shirt. He got right up to my face and said, ‘Did it bother you?’ Well, with that question, the hair just stood up on the back of my head. I said, ‘Yes.’ “Did you see it?” was his next question. I said “No. ..Did you see it?” He said “No, but my brother seen it. It chased him.”

In August of 1973, Ed and two others were bowhunting for goats and black bear when a storm forced them to take shelter in Dogfish Bay Lagoon.

“We beached our skiff and let the tide run her dry. After a dinner of broiled salmon we turned in to our tent. Back in those days, the best tent I had was a dark green canvas job with a center pole and no windows or floor. We left the fire burning and cleaned the pots and pans so as not to attract bears during the night and turned in,” Ed wrote.

The sky was clear, but the wind was howling through the old growth timber that lined the shore. Sometime around 2 a.m., Dennis woke Ed after hearing what sounded like footsteps outside the tent. It wasn’t a bear. Ed said the walking – or rather creeping – continued until it half circled the tent.

“In August, there is still some light in the sky until about 10 or 11. I recall that we all were embarrassed about being afraid about the coming night. We had a flashlight and the rifle in the tent between us, locked and loaded. I finally dosed off but woke right up when Dennis squeezed my leg. The illuminated hands of my watch showed it was 2:30. Joe was already sitting up and had the rifle in hand. I heard the first step, not more than about 10 feet from the back of the tent. Slowly. Then another and another. Whatever this was, it sounded like it was walking on two feet. It made the same semi-circle around the tent. When we finally got enough courage to crawl out of the tent and turn the flashlight on, we saw nothing. No tracks, nothing. The third night we decided if it bothered us again, we would come out of the tent shooting. We were actually scared. It never came back the third night and the following day we had a break in the weather and got the heck out of there.”

Though Sasquatches became something of a popular phenomenon in the 1960s and ‘70s in the Lower 48, the nantiinaq in Sugt’stun culture has been around for a long time. According to the culture, he might be a different kind of creature, a tragic half-man, half-beast who wasn’t always in this condition. He perhaps used to be fully human.

Elder Nick Tanape said he doesn’t discredit the stories about nantiinaq, but says he’s never seen one.

“I think there’s something to them,” he said.

Malania said that, once her family moved to Nanwalek, the nantiinaq stayed far away and left them in peace. It didn’t follow them, and for that they were grateful. She grew up, raised 13 children and remains one of the few regional elders who can pass on the old traditions.

Malania – a favorite among the young people of Nanwalek, especially when she tells stories – learned many things from her grandmother, who was a traditional healer.

Alaskan Cryptid: The 'Hairy Man'

The Urayuli or “Hairy Man” is a famous Cryptid located in Southwest Alaska. It has several other names, such as Arulataq, Bushman, Big Man, Tent Monster, Nant’ina, and Woodsman.

The Urayuli, as described, stands about 6 to 10 feet tall and is covered with shaggy, coarse hair or fur of approximately 2 to 4 inches long. It has glowing eyes and is said to look somewhat like the extinct primates. Its arms are elongated enough that the creature can reach its ankles.

The Urayuli lives in the wide tundra areas near Lake Iliamna. This quick and agile Alaskan Cryptid is oftentimes seen traveling at night and is a fast swimmer. It is often blamed for stealing fish and dogs, as well as destroying the tents of nearby campers. Many people from that particular region have their stories of encounters with the creature.

In 1956, a fisherman spotted the Urayuli as he was anchoring his fishing boat on the beach at night. A biologist from Ketchikan had later found and took a photograph of huge human-like footprints on the same beach.

In 1982, in the city of Dillingham, a hunting guide showed a picture that he had taken of the Urayuli standing on a mountain ridge. It had an approximate height of 10 feet and a weight of around 750 pounds, with long reddish brown fur.

In July of 1999, along the banks of the Kiseralik River in Alaska, a group was able to take a photo of a pair of huge wedge-shaped footprints that they had noticed in the mud. The footprints were estimated to be about 12 to 14 inches long and 3 inches deep, and were approximated to be at least 6 feet apart.

In the same year, a black-haired huge creature was seen standing on two legs in the Cold Bay of Belkofski. It stood about 14 feet tall and had the appearance of an Ape, with very long arms and legs.

Legendary accounts say that children who go out of the house at night get lost in the woods and are transformed into the Urayuli. Perhaps, this tale was told to children so they would be afraid to go out at night and stay at home instead.

Encounters with the Urayuli are mostly harmless and undisruptive. But, like any other beings or creatures, it will surely defend itself if it feels that its life is being threatened. - travelinalaska
