Canadian Military Insists Jackhead, MB Incident Was 'Exercise'

This was posted on the MUFON CMS this morning:

Winnipeg, Manitoba - 2/18/2015: I live close to the airport and very near one of the runways. We see planes take off and land all the time. Seeing lights in the sky is nothing new in this area because of the airport. At about 8:15 pm on February 18, 2015 I just happened to look out my back window and saw a very bright blinking orb in the sky which was very different from the lights of the planes. It was about 300 meters away from my position, directly in front of me and about a mile up in the sky. I watched this object fly very slowly toward the northeast. It stopped in place and then turned right but only traveled in a southeast direction for a couple of seconds then turned back northeast. It travelled northeast very slowly for a couple of minutes then turned left toward the northwest. It travelled northwest for a few seconds then back northeast. It was either moving very slowly or it was stopped all together, but never moved quickly. After watching this for about 10 minutes it only moved maybe 200 or 300 meters. As I was watching it I noticed that the planes were circling around to the east instead of coming in for a landing, as if they were in a holding pattern. There were 4 planes in the sky around the edge of the city that I could see from my position and they were all following each other from west to east. Then I saw the police helicopter with its green light fly towards the object from the direction of the airport. When the helicopter got within 100 meters from the object all of a sudden the lights went out and the object was gone. I didn't see it leave, like there was no streak of light and I couldn't see the orb fly away. It just disappeared. The police helicopter flew right by where the orb was last seen. It flew around in the general area for a few minutes then I didn't see it anymore. A few minutes later the planes started landing again. I was surprised to see all the social media hype about a crashed u.f.o. on an Indian Reserve in northern Manitoba. My husband said I should report what I saw to someone because it occurred on the same night as the alleged crash up north with heavy military presence. - MUFON CMS

I posted the following on 2/19/2015:

Unknown Crash - Jackhead, Manitoba

Just noticed this on MUFON CMS...anyone have information on this event?

2/16/2015 - Jackhead, Manitoba, Canada: According to family on Facebook, there was a crash. An increase in military presence and members of the public are not allowed near the crash site and photography is not permitted anywhere near the site. Jackhead is north of the Peguis Indian reserve. - MUFON CMS

This was reported in the news a few days later:

UFO near Jackhead? It's actually a plane, says military

Social media reports of a possible UFO sighting last night near Jackhead, Man., are not true, says the Canadian Forces, which attributed the bright light people saw to an airplane from a training exercise.

On Wednesday night, several people said on Twitter and Facebook that they saw a bright light in the sky, fuelling speculation that it may have been an unidentified flying object.

The rumour became stronger when photos were posted of Canadian Forces vehicles in the area, with some people claiming the military was there to contain a UFO crash site.

But it was not a UFO at all, says Lt.-Col. Paul Davies, commanding officer 38 Territorial Battalion Group, which is involved in an Arctic Response Company Group training exercise on Lake Winnipeg this week.

"There's no aliens, just my friends in the air force who are out there helping us on this exercise," Davies told CBC News on Thursday.

"I have the commander of that air force contingent sitting right beside me and, you know, he assures us that that was not a UFO, but that was him."

About 150 military personnel are taking part in Exercise Arctic Bison 2015, which includes the 38 Canadian Brigade Group, the 2nd Battalion of the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, the 4th Canadian Ranger Patrol Group, and 440 Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force.

Davies said soldiers are training to deal with a plane crash and provide ground search and rescue support in the Arctic.

The bright light that people saw, he explained, came from an airplane that takes off very quickly.

"From a distance it may have looked like it was going straight up in the air, but it wasn't," he said. "It was just us out there playing our games."

The exercise wraps up on Sunday. - CBC
