Stan Gordon: Recent Giant Bird Sighting - South Greensburg, PA

Pennsylvania UFO / anomalies researcher Stan Gordon forwarded the following recent case. If anyone has further information, please forward to paufo@comcast.net:

The Case of the Phantom Giant Bird

January 1, 2013 - 3 PM

South Greensburg, PA

On the afternoon of January 1, 2013, two women and a young boy decided to take a walk through a wooded area near South Greensburg to enjoy the beautiful scenery. It was about 32 degrees and clear visibility in the area. The area had a cover of snow from a previous storm. Around 3 PM the three people advanced into the woods and were looking at a tree that still had a lot of leaves on it.

When they were about 20-25 feet from the tree, the two women saw something that startled them. The boy was apparently looking elsewhere. They both at the same time stated, “Did you see the size of that bird?” What they observed was what appeared to be a bird unfolding its huge wings. A witness described the wingspan as being approximately 6-7 feet wide, and described how the creature unfolded its wings, and almost rolled them out, flapped them once and folded them back up as it moved along the ground behind the tree.

They immediately moved towards the area where the creature had been seen. They were only 20-25 feet away, yet when they got to the spot, the creature was nowhere to be seen. There weren’t that many trees at that location, and the area was quite open. There were no bird tracks at that location, just deer tracks. They heard no sounds of flapping or other sounds when the sighting occurred. The two women were mystified as they could not explain how the winged creature seemed to suddenly disappear. As one of the women commented, “We would have seen it fly away but it didn’t”. The wings were described as black and gray in color. One woman said she thought she saw a blue tinge within the wings as well.

This is the area where the witnesses observed the huge wings unfolding - Photo used with permission of a witness

I contacted one of the local bird experts for his thoughts. Both of us thought that the most likely candidate for what was observed was a Great Blue Heron which are seen around this area. The coloring and wingspan would fit as well. He also speculated that if there was a crust on the snow cover, possibly the bird did not break through and leave any tracks. Another possibility is a Sandhill Crane. He said that the wingspan and coloring is quite similar to the Great Blue Heron.

This man thought that it was quite odd that at 25 feet distance the witnesses could not identify the bird if it was a Heron. He also indicated the Great Blue Heron does not fly fast as it lifts off to become airborne, and thought it was unusual that the women could not see it fly away from that nearby location. This baffles the witnesses as well.

Local History of Giant Bird reports

On September 5, 2001, just a couple miles away from where the previous incident occurred, a man observed a huge dark bird flying about fifty to sixty feet above the car and truck traffic on busy Route 119 in South Greensburg. The witness said this giant bird was black or dark grayish-brown in color. He was drawn to look skyward after hearing a sound “ like flags flapping in a thunderstorm. “ He estimated the wingspan of this monstrous flying creature to be between ten and fifteen feet in length.

Other locals over the years have reported “woosh” sounds as though something very large had passed overhead. Others have reported a shadow of a giant bird passing over their vehicle.

The following is a report previously published on my website - Stan Gordon's UFO Anomalies Zone:

On the evening of August 26, 2010, about 8:10 pm, there was a sighting of a monstrous bird in South Greensburg, PA. Just as it was getting dark, four people were sitting around in the yard having a barbecue and enjoying the beautiful weather when suddenly, their attention was drawn skyward by a sound like a “swish” or a “swoosh” or as one witness stated, “like air coming straight down.”

Several of the observers at almost the same time yelled out some exclamations including one man who said, “What the hell is that?” They were all startled to see a tremendously large bird that was flying over a tree in the yard about 30-40 feet overhead. The man who was doing the cooking turned and looked up to see the creature fly above him at a distance of about 40 feet away. As the bird passed the tree, it veered slightly to the right and went straight down the road ahead, maintaining its low level path.

When first observed, the massive wings of the creature were in an upward position and were beginning to drop slowly, almost as if they were rolling to the bottom. The swoosh sound could be heard when the wings were moving. The powerful bird had flown about 125 yards down the road, at which time the wings were coming back up. The creature was observed as it continued to move steadily down the road, passing just above the roof top of a house with its wings flapping slowly and steadily about 3-4 time until it reached a group of trees about ¼ mile away, where it was lost from sight. It took about 20 seconds to go the ¼ mile distance.

I interviewed two of the witnesses at the scene and they were able to provide a detailed description of the giant flying creature. As it passed over, it appeared as though it was peering below, with its head and beak positioned downward. It was estimated that if the bird was on the ground it would stand between 4 ½ to 5 feet tall. The entire body was the same dark color, either darkish brown or black. The body width was about 25-30 inches wide. One witness said the body, “was very bulky and husky.”

The head was oval shaped, and the beak was short for the size of the animal, about 8-10 inches long. The tail was about 2 feet long and came out wide to a point. It was the size of the wingspan of the creature that impressed the witnesses, which they estimated at 10 feet or more in length. When asked why nobody thought to take a picture, they pointed out that while there were cell phones lying there with camera functions, all involved were mesmerized by the encounter. One fellow I talked with said that after the experience he felt as if he was “almost in shock.”

It was later learned that another witness who lived along the road where the big bird flew over also reportedly saw the creature. One witness has been a long time hunter and is very familiar with birds native to the state and is certain that he saw something quite unusual. The area where these observations have taken place, while surrounded with some wooded locations, is well populated, and nearby Route 119 is a highly traveled roadway.

There has been a long history of sightings of giant birds with oversized wingspans in Pennsylvania as well as other sections of the United States and elsewhere. Many refer to these giant flying creatures as “Thunderbirds.” It is interesting to note that over the years around the same general area as this sighting, other residents have reported a similar strange “swoosh” sound, as though a huge bird had passed overhead, but nothing was seen.

Now years later, here is another detailed close range observation of a huge flying creature just a short distance away from the location where in 2001, a similar observation had taken place. It was on September 25, 2001, that a witness reported seeing a huge, dark colored bird flying about 50-60 feet above the traffic along Route 119 in South Greensburg. The observer was drawn to look upwards when he heard a sound, “like flags flapping in a thunderstorm.” That witness was stunned by the wingspan of the flying creature which he estimated was between 10 and 15 feet.

The Langenburg Close Encounter

By far the most publicized UFO landing in recent years occurred during the 1974 Labour Day weekend on a rapeseed farm outside Langenburg, Saskatchewan, close to the Manitoba border. As a calling card, the five dome-shaped UFOs that landed on Edwin Fuhr's farm left five of the most distinctive nest-like depressions ever seen. The case also demonstrates the interest UFOs appear to have in studying our cultivation efforts.

The scene unfolds on Sunday morning, September 1, 1974. At about 10:45 AM Edwin Fuhr was out swathing the rape when suddenly he came upon a dome-shaped object fifty feet in front of him. Thinking it was a joke perpetrated by his neighbour, Fuhr jumped off his tractor and walked within fifteen feet of the object. His curiosity quickly turned to shock when he realized that the thing before him, now visibly revolving, was hovering about a foot above the ground.

Bewildered by the sight, he slowly backed away, making sure not to turn his back to the craft. As he mounted his swather, he became even more alarmed; there were four more identical objects nearby, all visibly revolving in unison, in a clockwise direction!

In an interview with UFO researcher Ted Phillips, Edwin Fuhr described what had happened:

They were all revolving, all four of them. I sat there like I was frozen, I couldn't move nothing....I sat there for, it could have been fifteen or twenty minutes, I don't know. From one of them, something was probing around the grass....It was like, oh, I would say, the size of a fifty-cent piece, it looked like a probe, and the grass was all twisted and you could see marks like something had jumped here and there, all over. Then, they all went up, straight up, to I would say about two hundred feet and they stopped at that distance. When they hit the two hundred foot mark, they stopped spinning and a vapour floated out, an exhaust. The exhaust was only about six feet long, like a vapour, it was two ports at the bottom of it.

You could see they were about twelve-inch diameter ports and they were all like that. They were in a step-like formation, the lower was the last to go up... And after that, I would say only a second, there was a downward wind, a pressure that flattened the rape that was standing and I thought, "Oh, here goes my crop." It just took seconds to get to that height (two hundred feet) and then they were just standing and after that, into the clouds and they were gone.

Fuhr went on to describe the craft in detail:

The color of the machine was like a brushed stainless steel. It was rough and you could see while it was revolving that it was sort of grooved all around; you could see kind of grooves, they were darker grey....a dark grey...like it had been hot at one time, like steel that gets hot and cools off.²

Recovering from shock, Fuhr inspected the area where the craft had landed. There were five perfectly round rings of flattened rapeseed which had been swirled in a clockwise direction. After hearing of the incident, Fuhr's brother-in-law contacted the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. They arrived the following morning and in a report, the investigating officer, Constable Ron Morier stated:

I went to the scene...where we spoke with Edwin Fuhr and examined the circular patterns left by the saucers. There were five distinct circles, caused by something exerting what had to be heavy air or exhaust pressure over high grass.

In an interview with Ted Phillips, Constable Morier stated:

There is no way that this is a hoax...I think that there is no way that anything was wheeled in and out of that field because there had to be some trace...whatever was in there, it came out of the air and departed the same way, as far as I could tell. - UFO, sightings, landings, and abductions: The documented evidence

Farmer Edwin Fuhr's Strange Sighting In His Fields

Some residents of Langenburg a farming community about 70 kilometers southeast of Yorkton, believe they can create a tourist attraction based on an eerie event that occurred in a farmer’s field near the town in 1974.

On Sept. 1 1974, the skies were grey and threatening, but Edwin Fuhr was on his swather in a field of rapeseed (now called canola).

Moving up a small incline, he glanced up to make sure he would skirt a grassy, dried out slough just ahead when he spied something made of metal in the grass.

His first thought was that someone was playing a joke on him or had dumped junk in the old slough.

As the swather moved up the incline, the slough came into full view. The metallic “something” was one of five machines rotating rapidly and hovering just above the grass.

Fuhr, startled, stopped his swather, climbed down and took a few steps toward the hovering machines. Then, overcome with fear, he stopped and began slowly to ease back to his idling swather.

The machines continued to hover and spin, then slowly lifted. About 100 feet above ground, they manoeuvred into an echelon formation and rose at a much greater speed. Each vented a brief puff of smoke and in seconds. Disappeared over the horizon.

At the controls of his swather, Fuhr was almost paralyzed with fright and barely able to put the machine into gear. At lunch, he was unable to eat.

When he inspected the site where the strange visitors had been, he saw five circular depressions.

Most of the tall grass was pressed down, and, in places, was twisted as it would be by a spinning object. The circles were exactly 11 feet (3.3 meters) in diameter and there was unflattened grass in the centre.

The shaken farmer reported the incident to the RCMP. In a few days, a newspaper story brought hordes of curiosity seekers to the farm, all expecting to see the landing site. Fuhr could not allow that because the estimated 3,000 people who arrived would have pulverized his crop.

Fuhr said the mystery machines were made of what looked like stainless steel, but had a “brushed” finish. Each was about five feet (1.5 metres) high at the peak of its dome-like structure. There were no windows or portholes, no antennae or other projecting parts except something resembling a short exhaust pipe, the source of the vapour the objects emitted as they rose through the overcast.

The Centre for UFO Studies in Illinois sent a specialist to the farm and he found no reason to dispute Fuhr’s report.

Cpl. Ron Morier of the RCMP concluded that the five circles were caused by “something exerting what had to be heavy exhaust or air pressure. Whatever was in there came out of the air and departed the same way, as far as I could tell.”

Edwin Fuhr still lives in Langenburg where he’s regarded as a dependable, quiet spoken citizen not given to inventing tall tales. As one businessman said at the time of the incident, ”If that’s what Edwin says he saw, that’s what Edwin saw.”

Today, portions of the rings made by the strange machines are still visible on his land.

About three years ago, there was a report of two UFO’s that hovered briefly over Langenburg.

In another incident, four people, who were not identified, said they saw “a silver, saucer-shaped object” hovering above a highway in the Prince Albert area.

The sighting was in 1955 and was not reported until 1973 because those involved feared being ridiculed.

It’s likely that numerous other events have gone unreported for the same reason. - Saskatoon Star Phoenix - June 13, 1992

Shiney Domed-Shaped Objects Leave 'Crop Circles'

Farmer Edwin Fuhr, 36, was harvesting his rape crop at about 11:00 a.m., when he noticed a metallic-appearing dome-shaped object about 50 feet away in a grassy area. Stopping to investigate, he left his swather and walked to within 15 feet of the object. Noting that the object was spinning and swirling the grass beneath it, he became frightened and backed away. Climbing back on the swather, he looked around and saw four more domes arranged in a rough semi-circle, all identical and all spinning, hovering about a foot above the ground.

Suddenly one object took off, quickly followed by the other four, ascending in a step formation. At about 200 feet they stopped, each emitting a puff of gray vapour from exhaust-like extensions at the base. The vapour extended about six feet, followed by a downward gust of wind which flattened the rape in the immediate area. The objects then formed a straight line, hovered for a minute or two, then abruptly ascended into the low cloud cover and disappeared.

Later Fuhr learned that cattle in a nearby field had bellowed and broken through a fence about the time of the sighting. Going to inspect the landing area, he found five rings of depressed grass swirled in a clockwise fashion. There was no evidence of heat or burning. Some additional circles were found in the area later that month.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police Constable Ron Morier, quoted by Canadian Press, said: "Something was there and I doubt it was a hoax. There's no indication anything had been wheeled in or out and Mr. Fuhr seemed genuinely scared." - Langenburg, Saskatchewan, Canada, September 1, 1974

UNIDENTIFIED FLYING OBJECTS

1. Mr. ZORN telephoned this Office wandering whether or not
our Office had received any calls reporting sightings of unidenti-
fied flying objects. I advised Mr. ZORN that no such reports had
been received. Mr. ZORN then reported that he had just spoken to
his brother-in-law Edwin FUHR (B: 28 APR 38) on the telephone and
he related to him how around 10:30 A.M. today he came upon five
(5) 'saucer shaped' objects while swathing rape at the above lo-
cation. He apparently froze with fear and watched the 'Saucers'
for approx. 15 min. as they hovered a foot off the ground.
Finally he got off the Tractor and walked towards the 'Saucers'
coming to within 20 ft. of them before they propelled straight up
disappearing into the clouds. Mr. ZORN of course was skeptical as
was I of the above story, however he advised that his brother-in-
law is a responsible person and not prone to making up stories.
Mr. ZORN also spoke to his father-in-law who returned to the scene
of the sittings, and he confirmed that there were five definite
circular patterns left in the swamp grass.

2. As it was dark at this time there was no point in partollin,
to the scene. Arrangements were made to accompany Mr. ZORN to the
scene first thing tomorrow morning.

S.U.I. (G.A.G.) Cpl. (R.L. Morier) Cst.

3. 2 SEP, I went to the scene with Mr. ZORN where we spoke
with Edwin FUHR and examined the circular patterns left by the
'Saucers". There were five different distinct circles, caused by
something exerting what had to be heavy air or exhaust pressure
over the high grass. The grass was flattened in a clockwise circle
with the flattened portion being approx. 18 in. The total diameter
of two of the circles was 12 ft., with the other three being approx.
10 ½ ft. in diameter. The grass in the centre portion of the ring
was standing, and appeared untouched. Photographs were taken of the
rings. FUHR stated that he was so involved with swathing in the
rape, which was a good 3½ ft. tall, that he didn't notice one of the
'Saucers' located in the sunken dried slough in the field until he
was about 50 ft. away from them. He described the 'Saucers' as
being about 4 or 5 ft. in height. The body was a highly polished
HIGHLY POLISHED... steel, with the bottom lip being a duller steel
shade. He didn't notice any windows on the 'Saucers' because they
were revolving at too great a speed. He didn't hear any noise co-
ming from the machine over the noise of his Tractor. FUHR stated
that as the 'Saucers' gained altitude he noticed exhaust come from
underneath them. Other than the five rings, there was no other
physical evidence in the area.

4. The witness FUHR has been known by a member of this Detach-
ment for a period of four years., and during this time he has not been
known to materialize any such stories. He is a responsible person,
and his information is considered reliable.

Just the Facts?: Rare Photo of Hiroshima Blast -- Stampeding Dolphins -- New Island Emerges Off German Coast

Rare Photo of A-Bomb Cloud Found in Hiroshima

A long lost image from the Hiroshima atomic bombing has been discovered at a Japanese elementary school.

The black-and-white photograph shows the mushroom cloud over Hiroshima split into two distinctly separated parts, one on top of the other.

The rare image was found at the Honkawa Elementary School in Hiroshima city, in a collection of about 1,000 articles on the WWII atomic bombing. The material was donated by a late survivor, Yosaburo Yamasaki, in or after 1953.

According to the Japanese daily Asahi Shimbun, a memo on the back of the photo says it was shot near the town of Kaitaichi, some six miles east of ground zero, two minutes after the bomb was dropped on August 6, 1945.

Historians knew of the existence of the picture as a copy originally appeared in a Japanese-language book published in 1988.

The book reported that the photographer is “unknown” and that the image was shot “20-30 minutes” after the bombing.

“Studies by the Imperial navy and others have already discovered that the cloud separated, but the photo confirms it and is thus valuable,” a curator from the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum told the daily Japan Times.

The best-known pictures of the bomb’s immediate aftermath were taken from the air by the US military.

Codenamed “Little Boy,” the five-ton bomb dropped on Hiroshima was carried by the U.S. warplane known as Enola Gay. The blast killed or injured with horrific burns at least 140,000 people.

Three days later, another mushroom cloud appeared over the city of Nagasaki. Named “Fat Man,” the bomb killed another 70,000.

New island emerges off German coast

Despite its youthful age the sickle-shaped island lying 16 miles off the coast of the German state of Schleswig Holstein is already home to around 50 different plant species and proved popular with sea birds such as herring gulls and oyster catchers, eager to take advantage of its unspoilt and pristine environment.

Formed over just 10 years, the rapid appearance of the island has surprised scientists familiar with the strong winds and shifting shifts that characterise Germany's North Sea coast.

"The fact that in just a few years a new island is formed is very impressive," said Detlef Hansen, who works at the neighbouring Wadden Sea National Park. "For conservationists this is anything but ordinary."

The formation of new sandbanks in the shallow waters of the Wadden Sea park are not uncommon but scientist said it is rare for one to survive the winter storms and establish itself as an island. The new land mass now boast dunes as high as four metres, and the grasses and other plants emerging from its windswept surface have provided it with a certain resilience to the eroding hand of nature.

Given the name Norderoogsand, the island has also benefited from lying in a position sheltered by other islands and from the fact that over the past decade there have been few high storm surges. - Telegraph

Car chase driver was 'escaping aliens'

A driver who has schizophrenia rammed a police car during a chase across Exeter to escape from aliens, a court heard.

Police were alerted to Brett Webber's bizarre driving after he almost knocked a motorcyclist off his bike in the city centre last January.

Exeter Crown Court was told the 48-year-old, of Venny Bridge, Exeter, believed aliens "were out to kill him".

Webber admitted dangerous driving and the case was adjourned for a psychiatric care plan to be prepared.

Mr James Taghdissian, prosecuting, told the court when Webber was eventually detained he was singing "doh, ray, me" to ward off aliens he perceived to be threatening him.

Miss Kelly Scrivener, defending, asked the court to pass a community order which would allow her client to be treated for his mental disorder, but Judge Phillip Wassall said he could not see a "viable and workable option" to punish Webber properly in the community for what was a "very serious offence".

"I am adjourning this case to give more time to come up with a plan which will give the court a possible way of avoiding what would otherwise be an inevitable prison sentence," he said. - BBC

Rare Dolphin Stampede Overtakes Whale Watching Boat

Video - Dolphin Stampede Overtakes Whale Watching Boat

Passengers on board Capt. Dave's Dolphin and Whale Safari tour boat were treated to a rare sight this past weekend when around 1,000 common dolphins began to stampede off Dana Point in Southern California.

The unusual event happened on Saturday and then on again on Sunday, from when the video below was filmed.

Dave Anderson, the boat's owner, told The Los Angeles Times that throughout his 10 years in business he's almost never seen a pod of dolphins this large charging through the waters at full speed.

"It's one of the most amazing things I've ever seen, and I've seen a lot of beautiful and interesting things," Anderson said.

It's not clear why this happened, but Anderson guesses that the marine mammals may have been chasing something or were spooked.

"We don't know. I know they're not running away from the boat. It seems like they're responding to something but I just don't know what it is," he told the website.

Bigfoot DNA Study: We May Know Something Soon...

Earlier today, Bigfoot Evidence posted that there may be big news concerning the Ketchum DNA study. Since then, I've been trying to find out from more reliable sources as to what the hoopla is about.

There is unconfirmed information that the study will be published (peer reviewed) sometime before January 15th. Not sure if this is a fact...I've been told that there has been NO announcement within the study group BUT 'the study is GOOD'. In otherwords, the information earlier released by Dr. Ketchum is definitely in the study, as well as other interesting findings. I'm still trying to get to the bottom of this and will be updating...stay tuned. Lon

UPDATE: Supposedly, a press release is to be issued sometime today. There were rumors of a press conference earlier. Anyway, let's see where this goes...Lon

Death by Totem Pole

A northern Minnesota artist admitted in court Wednesday that he fatally crushed his wife with a 17-foot-tall totem pole they were carving, a murder his accusers say was fueled by infidelity and deceit.

Carl Muggli, 51, pleaded guilty in Koochiching County District Court to killing 61-year-old Linda Muggli in November 2010 at the couple's home south of International Falls. The husband had tried to convince authorities that the 700-pound pole accidentally fell out of a cradle and onto his wife of 24 years.

But about a week after Linda Muggli's death, a tipster told the Sheriff's Office about Facebook entries between Muggli and a woman in Alabama that were "very intimate in nature." Investigators also reported that they were unable to recreate the alleged accident.

"This whole thing is a tragic occurrence," defense attorney Charles Hawkins said Wednesday. He explained that his client chose to plead guilty to second-degree unintentional murder because "he did not want to put the family, his family or himself through any more misery."

Muggli had been charged with first-degree premeditated murder and second-degree intentional murder and his trial had been scheduled to begin Monday.

He remains in the county jail awaiting sentencing on Feb. 4.

Hawkins said Muggli faces a sentence of 12 1/2 to 15 years in prison, with the possibility of supervised release for the last third of that time.

On Nov. 26, 2010, a sheriff's deputy called to the couple's garage found Linda Muggli on the floor, bleeding from the mouth but still breathing.

She was taken to a hospital, where she died.

Later that day, Carl Muggli told a deputy that a totem pole the couple had been working on fell out of its cradle and onto his wife.

Agent found messages

A state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) agent reviewed Muggli's computer and uncovered Facebook messages between him and the woman that stretched from more than a month before Linda Muggli's death to a few days afterward.

"I love you with all my being. ... I want us together to live our lives as we seek. For I am with you. I am yours. We are one!" Muggli wrote to the woman he called "Eveningstar" the day before his wife's death.

He also began sending e-mails to real estate companies in Texas, looking for a new place to live. On Nov. 30, a few hours after his wife's memorial service, Muggli sent the woman an online link for property in Palestine, Texas. He later moved to Stockdale.

A month after Linda Muggli died, sheriff's deputies and an agent with the BCA went to the Muggli home in an effort to re-create the circumstances of the death as Carl Muggli had outlined. Each effort failed.

China's Area 52 - Improving Pilot Training

Recent Chinese TV coverage of Chinese Air Force training revealed that the code word for the main Chinese training base is “Area 52”. This is an interesting shout-out to the U.S. Air Force Tonopah Test Range (also known as Area 52) in Nevada. This has long been the site for testing new aircraft, and providing advanced training for fighter pilots. Nearby is Area 51, an even more secretive base used for experimental aircraft and, according to local lore, UFO activity.

What this shows is how much China understands that the only way to achieve victory in the air is to adopt Western pilot training methods. China is doing this in a big way. China is already getting rid of its thousands of old Cold War era warplanes. These were copies of Russian designs and Chinese air force experts noted that no one ever won a war with these aircraft. Since the 1990s China has been acquiring Western-style designs (MiG-29, Su-27/30) from Russia and developing similar aircraft. But these aircraft are only effective if operated by highly trained and experienced pilots. So China has provided the large quantities of fuel and spare parts needed to keep their several hundred modern fighters in the air a lot. This, however, was not enough. The pilots who started out on the old Cold War style aircraft did not become much better when moved to modern fighters, even after a lot of time in the air. Something was missing, and that turned out to be technical education and specialized training in the intricacies of modern air combat. That meant greater use of realistic flight simulators (so very dangerous maneuvers could be practiced). So the Chinese are taking care of all this, including establishing a “pilot university” that provides a four year academic and flight training program. All this closely follows methods and techniques pioneered by the United States.

The Chinese Air Force now has a training unit that will accurately (as possible) portray enemy (especially American and Indian) aircraft and combat tactics. Thus there are three Blue-Army Aggressor Squadrons (Blue is the bad guys in Chinese training, Red is the good guys) for this. One is equipped with Su-30s, to represent American F-15s or Indian or Vietnamese Su-30s. Another has the J-10A, which is similar to the F-16. The third squadron has J-7s (Chinese copies of the MiG-21), which represent low end threats, like the many MiG-21s India still uses.

Using your own aircraft for "aggressor (or dissimilar) training" began in 1969, when the U.S. Navy established the original "Top Gun" fighter pilot school. This was done in response to the poor performanceof its pilots against North Vietnamese pilots flying Russian fighters. What made the Top Gun operation different was that the training emphasized how the enemy aircraft and pilots operated. This was called "dissimilar training". In the past, American pilots practiced against American pilots, with everyone flying American aircraft and using American tactics. It worked in World War II because the enemy pilots were not getting a lot of practice and were using similar aircraft and tactics anyway. Most importantly, there was a lot of aerial combat going on, providing ample opportunity for on-the-job training. Not so in Vietnam, where the quite different Russian trained North Vietnamese were giving U.S. aviators an awful time. The four week Top Gun program solved the problem. The air force followed shortly with its Red Flag school. In the early 1980s, the Russians established a dissimilar air combat school (and began building Western style fighters), and the Chinese followed in 1987.

Over the last four decades the two American training programs have developed differently, and the entire concept of "dissimilar training" has changed. The navy kept Top Gun as a program to hone fighter pilot's combat skills. The air force made their Red Flag program more elaborate, bringing in the many different types of aircraft involved in combat missions (especially electronic warfare).

After the Cold War ended in 1991, it became increasingly obvious that none of our potential enemies was providing their fighter pilots with much training at all. In other words, the dissimilar training for U.S. fighter pilots was not as crucial as it had been during the Cold War. Actually, it had been noted that flying skills of Soviet pilots was declining in the 1980s, as economic problems in the USSR led to cuts in flying time. During that period American pilots were actually increasing their flying time. Moreover, U.S. flight simulators were getting better. American pilots were finding that even the game oriented combat flight simulators had some training value. But now, with China aggressively doing all they can to improve pilot quality, the U.S. has to pay more attention to staying ahead. - Strategy Page

Saudi Arabia beheads young housemaid

Saudi Arabia has beheaded a young Sri Lankan housemaid despite years of appeals for clemency from her home country and widespread international condemnation. The woman was sentenced to death for the 2005 killing of an infant entrusted to her care.

Rizana Nafeek, 24, was executed on Wednesday morning in the town of Dawadmy, some 250 miles from the capital Riyadh, the Saudi Internior Ministry said in a statement.

Nafeek was sentenced to death in 2007 after her wealthy Saudi employer accused her of killing his 4-month-old daughter after the baby choked while being bottle fed. The Saudi Interior Ministry issued a statement claiming the infant was strangled after a dispute between Nafeek and the baby's mother.

Sri Lanka appealed against the death penalty, but it was upheld by the Saudi Supreme Court in 2010.

Sri Lanka’s President Mahinda Rajapaksa personally appealed to Saudi authorities on two separate occasions in an attempt to stop the execution from going forward.

"President Rajapaksa and the government of Sri Lanka deplore the execution of Miss Rizana Nafeek despite all efforts at the highest level of the government and the outcry of the people locally and internationally over the death sentence of a juvenile housemaid," Reuters cites the Sri Lankan foreign ministry as saying in a statement.

Nafeek was only 17-years-old when she flew to the Gulf Kingdom in May 2005 on a forged passport that said she was 6 years older than she actually was. She had no training and spoke no Arabic, and the incident is said to have occurred just days after her arrival in the country.

Rights groups claim her 2007 conviction was made under duress and have chastised Saudi authorities for carrying out the death penalty despite the fact that she was not legally an adult when the infant died.

Prior to her execution, Amnesty International said Nafeek had no access to lawyers either during her pre-trial interrogation or trial.

"Despite a chorus of pleas for Saudi Arabian authorities to step in and reconsider Rizana Nafeek’s death sentence, they went ahead and executed her anyway, proving once more how woefully out of step they are with their international obligations regarding the use of the death penalty,” Philip Luther, Director of Amnesty International’s Middle East and North Africa Program said on Wednesday.

Human Rights Watch also condemned the execution.

"Saudi Arabia is one of just three countries that executes people for crimes they committed as children," said Nisha Varia, senior women's rights researcher for Human Rights Watch.

Saudi Arabia, an absolute monarchy that follows the strict Wahhabi school of Islam, has a legal system based on Islamic or Sharia law rather than legal codes and precedents.

Some 90 per cent of Saudi Arabia's private sector workforce is made up of foreign workers, and maids from Africa and South Asia have become indispensable in many households.

There are documented cases, however, of maids who suffered domestic abuse at the hands of their employers going on to attack the children entrusted to their care.

In January 2012 the United Nations human rights office expressed concern that executions in Saudi Arabia were on the rise.

Compared to 2010 when 26 people received capital punishment rulings for various crimes, in 2011 there were 76 executions in the kingdom.

The stiff penalties of Sharia can be mitigated however, especially for those who are financially well off.

In the case of murder, the “eye for an eye” principle of Islamic law allows capital punishment to be replaced with Diyya or “Blood money” – a ransom paid by the family of the killer if the bereaved family agrees.

For migrant workers who are unable to pay such high levels of compensation, however, the death penalty appears all but unavoidable. - RT

Winter of Discontent: George Washington's Prophetic Vision

Many believe the story to be authentic, but most historians believe it is a legend, similar to the story of George Washington chopping down the cherry tree. Historians point out the story of the angelic vision was unknown during Washington’s life. It is first found in the writings of Charles Alexander (1836-1927) who wrote fictional “dream” stories about many famous Americans. Alexander wrote that in 1859, a 99-year-old man named Anthony Sherman, who claimed to have been an aide to George Washington, confided to the author. In the National Tribune, 1880, an article appeared giving an account of the "Vision of Washington" at Valley Forge. The article was reprinted in the Stars and Stripes on December 21, 1950.

The soldier mentioned as having a first-hand account of the "Vision," Anthony Sherman, was a soldier in the Continental Army. However, according to his pension application, written by him, he states that he was at Saratoga under the command of Benedict Arnold at the end of 1777 and only joined the main forces in 1778 in New Jersey just before the Battle of Monmouth.

Anthony Sherman wrote:

You doubtless heard the story of Washington's going to the thicket to pray in secret for aid and comfort from God, the interposition of whose Divine Providence brought us safely through the darkest days of tribulation. One day, I remember it well, when the chilly winds whistled through the leafless trees, though the sky was cloudless and the sun shown brightly, he remained in his quarters nearly all the afternoon alone. When he came out, I noticed that his face was a shade paler than usual. There seemed to be something on his mind of more than ordinary importance. Returning just after dusk, he dispatched an orderly to the quarters who was presently in attendance. After a preliminary conversation of about an hour, Washington, gazing upon his companion with that strange look of dignity which he alone commanded, related the event that occurred that day.

THE VISION AND PROPHECY

"I do not know whether it is owing to the anxiety of my mind, or what, but this afternoon, as I was sitting at this table engaged in preparing a dispatch, something seemed to disturb me. Looking up, I beheld standing opposite me a singularly beautiful female. So astonished was I, for I had given strict orders not to be disturbed, that it was some moments before I found language to inquire into the cause of her presence. A second, a third, and even a fourth time did I repeat my question, but received no answer from my mysterious visitor except a slight raising of her eyes. By this time I felt strange sentiments spreading through me. I would have risen, but the riveted gaze of the being before me rendered volition impossible. I assayed once more to address her, but my tongue had become useless, even thought itself had become paralyzed. A new influence, mysterious, potent, irresistible, took possession of me. All I could do was to gaze steadily, vacantly at my unknown visitor. Gradually, the surrounding atmosphere seemed as though becoming filled with sensations and luminous. Everything about me seemed to rarify, the mysterious visitor herself becoming more airy, and yet more distinct to my sight than before. I now began to feel as one dying, or rather to experience the sensations which I have sometimes imagined accompany dissolution. I did not think, I did not reason, I did not move; all were alike impossible. I was only conscious of gazing fixedly, vacantly at my companion.

"Presently I heard a voice saying, 'Son of the Republic, look and learn,' while at the same time my visitor extended her arm eastwardly. I now beheld a heavy white vapor at some distance rising fold upon fold. This gradually dissipated, and I looked upon a strange scene. Before me lay spread out in one vast plain all the countries of the world -- Europe, Asia, Africa, and America. I saw rolling and tossing between Europe and America the billows of the Atlantic, and between Asia and America lay the Pacific. 'Son of the Republic,' said the same mysterious voice as before, 'look and learn.'

"At that moment I beheld a dark, shadowy being, like an angel floating in mid-air, between Europe and America, dipping water out of the ocean in the hollow of each hand. He sprinkled some upon America with his right hand, while with his left hand he cast some on Europe. Immediately a dark cloud raised from these countries and joined in mid-ocean. For a while it remained stationary, and then moved slowly westward, until it enveloped America in its murky folds. Sharp flashes of lightning passed through it at intervals, and I heard the smothered groans and cries of the American people.

"A second time the angel dipped water from the ocean, and sprinkled it out as before. The dark cloud was then drawn back to the ocean, in whose heaving billows it sank from view. A third time I heard the mysterious voice saying, 'Son of the Republic, look and learn.' I cast my eyes upon America and beheld villages and towns and cities springing up one after another until the whole land from the Atlantic to the Pacific was dotted with them. Again I heard the mysterious voice say, 'Son of the Republic, the end of the century cometh, look and learn.'

"At this the dark, shadowy angel turned his face southward, and from Africa I saw an ill-omened spectre approach our land. It flitted slowly over every town and city. The inhabitants presently set themselves in battle array against each other. As I continued looking, I saw a bright angel, on whose brow rested a crown of light, on which was traced the word "Union," bearing the American flag, which he placed between the divided nation, and said, 'Remember ye are brethren.' Instantly the inhabitants, casting from them their weapons, became friends once more and united around the National Standard.

"And again I heard the mysterious voice saying, 'Son of the Republic, look and learn.' At this the dark, shadowy angel placed a trumpet to his mouth and blew three distinct blasts; and taking water from the ocean, he sprinkled it upon Europe, Asia, and Africa. Then my eyes beheld a fearful scene: from each of these countries arose thick, black clouds that were joined into one. And throughout this mass there gleamed a dark red light by which I saw hordes of armed men, who, moving with the cloud, marched by land and sailed by sea to America, which country was enveloped in the volume of the cloud. And I dimly saw these vast armies devastate the whole country and burn the villages, towns, and cities that I beheld were springing up. As my ears listened to the thundering of the cannon, clashing of swords, and the shouts and cries of millions in mortal combat, I heard again the mysterious voice saying, 'Son of the Republic, look and learn.' When the voice had ceased, the dark, shadowy angel placed his trumpet once more to his mouth and blew a long and fearful blast.

"Instantly a light as of a thousand suns shone down from above me, and pierced and broke into fragments the dark cloud which enveloped America. At the same moment the angel, upon whose head still shone the word "Union," and who bore our national flag in one hand and a sword in the other, descended from the heavens, attended by legions of white spirits. These immediately joined the inhabitants of America, who I perceived were well-nigh overcome, but who immediately taking courage again, closed up their broken ranks and renewed the battle. Again, amid the fearful noise of the conflict, I heard the mysterious voice saying, 'Son of the Republic, look and learn.' As the voice ceased, the shadowy angel for the last time dipped water from the ocean and sprinkled it upon America. Instantly the dark cloud rolled back, together with the armies it had brought, leaving the inhabitants of the land victorious.

"Then once more I beheld the villages, towns, and cities springing up where I had seen them before, while the bright angel, planting the azure standard he had brought in the midst of them, cried with a loud voice, 'While the stars remain, and the heavens send down dew upon the earth, so long shall the Union last.' And taking from his brow the crown on which was blazoned the word "Union," he placed it upon the Standard, while the people, kneeling down, said, 'Amen.'

"The scene instantly began to fade and dissolve, and I at last saw nothing but the rising, curling vapor I at first beheld. This also disappearing, I found myself once more gazing upon the mysterious visitor, who, in the same voice I had heard before, said, 'Son of the Republic, what you have seen is thus interpreted: Three great perils will come upon the Republic. The most fearful is the third, passing which the whole world united shall not prevail against her. Let every child of the Republic learn to live for his God, his land, and the Union.' With these words the vision vanished, and I started from my seat, and felt that I had seen a vision wherein had been shown me the birth, progress, and destiny of the United States."

"Such, my friends," concluded the venerable narrator, "were the words I heard from General Washington's own lips, and America will do well to profit by them." - Anthony Sherman

American spirits reached a low point during the harsh winter of 1777-78. British troops had marched triumphantly into Philadelphia the previous autumn. Philadelphia was the largest city in the Colonies and the seat of political power. After the British swept into Philadelphia, the Continental Congress had flee to west, first to Lancaster then to York.

VALLEY FORGE

Washington's army had spent the summer of 1777 fighting a string of losing battles. The Americans harassed the British army in skirmishes and minor battles for much of the fighting season. In the fall, the Americans showed pluck at the Battle of Brandywine in September and the Battle of Germantown in October. Yet the Americans were unable to keep the British out of Philadelphia.

In December, Washington marched his tired, beaten, hungry and sick army to Valley Forge, a location about 20 miles northwest of British-occupied Philadelphia. From Valley Forge, Washington could keep an eye on General Howe's British army ensconced in Philadelphia.

At Valley Forge, there were shortages of everything from food to clothing to medicine. Washington's men were sick from disease, hunger, and exposure. The Continental Army camped in crude log cabins and endured cold conditions while the Redcoats warmed themselves in colonial homes. The patriots went hungry while the British soldiers ate well.

Terms of enlistment were ending for many soldiers in Washington's army. The General wondered if he would even have an army left when the spring thaw finally arrived.

General Washington was upset that local farmers were hoarding much-needed food waiting to earn higher profits in the spring. Some farmers even sneaked grain into Philadelphia to feed the British army, who paid in gold or silver. With each passing night came more desertions. Washington grew privately disgusted at the lack of commitment of his so-called patriot fighters.

Then there was the grumbling of some in Congress and among some of Washington's own officers. Washington's leadership skills were openly questioned. Many said General Horatio Gates was better-suited to leading the army. After all, hadn't he scored a major victory in October at the battle of Saratoga.? Within the environment of cold, deprivation, and rebellion, how long could Washington and his army endure?

CONDITIONS AT VALLEY FORGE

Head Quarters, Valley Forge, February 16, 1778

Dear Sir: It is with great reluctance, I trouble you on a subject, which does not fall within your province; but it is a subject that occasions me more distress, than I have felt, since the commencement of the war; and which loudly demands the most zealous exertions of every person of weight and authority, who is interested in the success of our affairs. I mean the present dreadful situation of the army for want of provisions, and the miserable prospects before us, with respect to futurity. It is more alarming than you will probably conceive, for, to form a just idea, it were necessary to be on the spot. For some days past, there has been little less, than a famine in camp. A part of the army has been a week, without any kind of flesh, and the rest for three or four days. Naked and starving as they are, we cannot enough admire the incomparable patience and fidelity of the soldiery, that they have not been ere this excited by their sufferings, to a general mutiny or dispersion. Strong symptoms, however, discontent have appeared in particular instances; and nothing but the most acitive efforts every where can long avert so shocking a catastrophe.

Our present sufferings are not all. There is no foundation laid for any adequate relief hereafter. All the magazines provided in the States of New Jersey, Pensylvania, Delaware and Maryland, and all the immediate additional supplies they seem capable of affording, wil not be sufficient to support the army more than a month longer, if so long. Very little been done to the Eastward, and as little to the Southward; and whatever we have a right to expect from those quarters, must necessarily be very remote; and is indeed more precarious, than could be wished. When the forementioned supplies are exhausted, what a terrible crisis must ensue, unless all the energy of the Continent is exerted to provide a timely remedy?

Impressed with this idea, I am, on my part, putting every engine to work, that I can possibly think of, to prevent the fatal consequences, we have so great a reason to apprehend. I am calling upon all those, whose stations and influence enable them to contribute their aid upons so important an occasion; and from your well known zeal, I expect every thing within the compass of your power, and that the abilities and resources of the state over which you preside, will admit. I am sensible of the disadvantages it labours under, from having been so long the scene of war, and that it must be exceedingly drained by the great demands to which it has been subject. But, tho' you may not be able to contribute materially to our relief, you can perhaps do something towards it; and any assistance, however trifling in itself, will be of great moment at so critical a juncture, and will conduce to keeping the army together till the Commissary's department can be put upon a better footing, and effectual measures concerted to secure a permanent and competent supply. What methods you can take, you will be the best judge of; but, if you can devise any means to procure a quantity of cattle, or other kind of flesh, for the use of this army, to be at camp in the course of a month, you will render a most essential service to the common cause. I have the honor etc.
– George Washington, letter to George Clinton (Feb. 16, 1778)

Help came in the form of a Prussian volunteer, Baron Von Steuben. The military leader was aghast at the lack of American discipline. At Washington's urging he trained the Continental Army, Prussian-style. The troops slowly became more professional. Among the soldiers who remained, confidence grew.

Over the course of the winter, the weather improved somewhat. Food trickled in from the surrounding countryside. Many wives of soldiers spent time at Valley Forge over the winter. Washington was able to quash those who questioned his leadership abilities.

The Continental Army encamped at Valley Forge in the fall of 1777 with about 12,000 men in its ranks. Death claimed about a quarter of them before spring arrived. Another thousand didn't reenlist or deserted. But the army that remained was stronger. They were fewer, but more disciplined. They were weary, but firmly resolved.

The next year, 1778, brought greater fortune to the American cause. While Washington froze at Valley Forge, Benjamin Franklin was busy securing the French alliance. Now the war would be different indeed. - Washington at Valley Forge

"Of all the dispositions and habits, which lead to political prosperity, Religion and Morality are indispensable supports. In vain would that man claim the tribute of Patriotism, who should labor to subvert these great pillars of human happiness, these firmest props of the duties of Men and Citizens. The mere Politician, equally with the pious man, ought to respect and to cherish them. A volume could not trace all their connexions with private and public felicity. Let it simply be asked, Where is the security for property, for reputation, for life, if the sense of religious obligation desert the oaths, which are the instruments of investigation in Courts of Justice? And let us with caution indulge the supposition, that morality can be maintained without religion. Whatever may be conceded to the influence of refined education on minds of peculiar structure, reason and experience both forbid us to expect, that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle."

Just the Facts?: Professor Defends Newtown Massacre Theory -- Cannibal Cutlery -- Pentagon UFO-Like Airship

Florida professor defends theory that Newtown shootings never happened

A communications professor from Florida Atlantic University isn’t backing down from his theory that the mass killing of 20 children in Newtown, Connecticut may have never happened.

Writing on his Memory Hole blog last month, Professor James Tracy asserted that it was “not unreasonable to suggest the Obama administration [had] complicity or direct oversight of an incident that has in very short order sparked a national debate” on gun control.

“While it sounds like an outrageous claim, one is left to inquire whether the Sandy Hook shooting ever took place—at least in the way law enforcement authorities and the nation’s news media have described,” he declared, noting that no surveillance video of photos of bodies had been released by authorities. (Read more…)

“Moreover, to suggest that [President Barack] Obama is not capable of deploying such techniques to achieve political ends is to similarly place ones faith in image and interpretation above substance and established fact, the exact inclination that in sum has brought America to such an impasse.”

On Tuesday, WPTV caught up with Tracy, who also doubts the official versions President John F. Kennedy’s assassination, the Oklahoma City bombing, the Sept. 11 terrorists attacks and the mass shooting at a theater in Aurora, Colorado last year.

“In terms of saying that Sandy Hook — the Newtown massacre — did not take place, is really an oversimplification of what I actually said,” he explained. “I said that I think that there may very well be elements of that event that are synthetic to some degree, that are somewhat contrived. I think that, overall, the media really did drop the ball. I don’t think that they got to the bottom of some of the things that may have taken place there.”

As for the deaths of 20 elementary children, the professor said, “I think that most likely that took place.”

A spokesperson for Florida Atlantic University on Monday tried to distance the school from Tracy’s views.

“James Tracy does not speak for the university,” media director Lisa Metcalf told the Sun Sentinel. “The website on which his post appeared is not affiliated with FAU in any way.” - Video - NWO Truth

Cannibals with cutlery: The macabre nineteenth century Fijian forks used by tribesmen to eat the bodies of rival warriors

For such a revolting act, these cannibals were quite dainty when it came to eating their enemies.

Fijian tribesmen used this macabre set of forks to eat the bodies of rival warriors.

But despite their grisly background, these seven instruments have been sold for £30,000 at auction.

The pronged antiques date from the 19th century when tribal chiefs devoured their enemies after they had been killed.

Their bodies were brought back to the victors' village by members of the tribe and served to the community and chiefs.

Tribal attendants would hand-feed sections of the meat to their leaders with the forks, which were only used on special occasions.

The wooden implements are between 6ins to 17ins long and each have four lethal spokes which were sharpened to create a deadly point
.
They were purchased 20 years ago by a collector of medieval weapons and tribal art.

As a collection, the forks were only estimated to fetch £1,600, but demand soared for the gruesome items and they sold to individual collectors for a total of £29,440.

James Bridges, director of auctioneers Martel Maides in Guernsey, said: 'The forks came in from a local collector who collects tribal art and medieval weapons.

'He purchased them from another collector in the Midlands 20 years ago and we don't know where they came from before that.

'They were used in the 19th century and you can see they have significant age from the patina and colour where they have been handled and used.

'It's an extraordinary thing to be able to see so many at once for a collector. Some only see three or four in their lifetime but we had seven in our collection.

'The tribal chiefs and elders were not allowed to feed, they had to be fed by attendants and that's what these forks would have been used for, including cannibalism.

'Part of the tradition was that when they had fights or wars with rival tribes the resulting people who were killed would have been brought back and they would have been eaten.

'I believe it wasn't just the tribal elders who would have taken part in the cannibalism, the whole village would have.

'The forks were kept in smoky huts and seen as sacred objects. They would have represented the power of the tribal chief.

'It was very exciting in the saleroom, there were sharp intakes of breath as the prices rose and at one point it seemed like everyone's hands were up.

'The vendor was completely over the moon and was absolutely speechless with the result.' - Daily Mail

Bobcat mauls man / teen in Massachusetts

A man and his nephew have been attacked by a bobcat after startling the wild animal in their own garage.

Roger Mundell Jr said all he heard was a hiss before the wild cat pounced on him, sinking its teeth into his face and its claws in his back.

The bobcat then ran out of the garage in Brookfield, Massachusetts, and bit Mr Mundell's 15-year-old nephew on the arms and back.

"It only took a split second for him to be on me," Mr Mundell told Boston's WHDH-TV. "I didn't have time to process it."

Mr Mundell and his wife eventually pinned the cat to the ground with a walking stick and shot it dead with a handgun.

All three of those involved are being treated for rabies. His wife was not bitten but she came into contact with the animal's blood.

State environmental police took the bobcat to have it tested for rabies, which they think is likely given its unusual behaviour.

Bobcats are generally twice the size of an average domestic house cat.

They can grow to more than a metre in length and can weigh up to 14kg (30lb). - Sky

Pentagon working on UFO-style airship for stealthy cargo missions

The sci-fi TV show Fringe often shows us an alternate, more technologically advanced version of Earth where airships are, for some reason, the norm. Now reality is mirroring fiction as a new project being developed in conjunction with the Pentagon is looking to bring airships back from their spotty past and into the future.

Developed by Aeroscraft, the 230-foot-long prototype airship called the Pelican is designed to lift up to 10 tons of cargo across long distances, using a fraction of the fuel needed by an airplane. The airship, which, interestingly, looks a lot like a flying saucer, has been in the works for several years under the guidance of the Pentagon's Rapid Reaction Technology Office. In addition to cargo missions, the Pentagon also envisions the airship as a potential tool for surveillance and reconnaissance missions.

The current prototype is much smaller than the final version of the airship the company plans to build which will be 450-feet long and have the ability to carry up to 66 tons of cargo. - Dvice

Why do our fingers wrinkle when wet?

Science may be getting closer to explaining those prune-like fingers and toes we all get when we sit in a hot bath too long.

UK researchers from Newcastle University have confirmed wet objects are easier to handle with wrinkled fingers than with dry, smooth ones.

They suggest our ancestors may have evolved the creases as they moved and foraged for food in wet conditions.

Their experiments are reported in the Royal Society journal Biology Letters.

These involved asking volunteers to pick up marbles immersed in a bucket of water with one hand and then passing them through a small slot to be deposited by the other hand in a second container.

Volunteers with wrinkled fingers routinely completed the task faster than their smooth-skinned counterparts.

The team found there was no advantage from ridged fingers when moving dry objects. This suggests that the wrinkles serve the specific function of improving our grip on objects under water or when dealing with wet surfaces in general.

For a long time, it was assumed that the wrinkles were simply the result of the skin swelling in water, but recent investigations have actually shown the furrows to be caused by the blood vessels constricting in reaction to the water, which in turn is a response controlled by the body's sympathetic nervous system.

That an active system of regulation is at work led scientists into thinking there must be some deeper evolutionary justification for the ridges.

"If wrinkled fingers were just the result of the skin swelling as it took up water, it could still have a function but it wouldn't need to," said Dr Tom Smulders, from Newcastle's Centre for Behaviour and Evolution.

The tests involved handling wet objects with wrinkled and un-wrinkled fingers
"Whereas, if the nervous system is actively controlling this behaviour under some circumstances and not others, it seems less of a leap to assume there must be a function for it, and that evolution has selected it. And evolution wouldn't have selected it unless it conferred some sort of advantage," he told BBC News.

US-based researchers were the first to propose that the wrinkles might act like the tread on tyres, and even demonstrated how the patterns in the skin resembled those of run-off channels seen on the sides of hills.

What the Newcastle team has now done is confirm that prune-like fingers are indeed better at gripping wet objects.

"We have tested the first prediction of the hypothesis - that handling should be improved," Dr Smulders said.

"What we haven't done yet is show why - to see if the wrinkles remove the water, or whether it's some other feature of those wrinkles such as a change in their stickiness or plasticity, or something else. The next thing will be to measure precisely what's happening at that interface between the objects and the fingers."

Our ancestors might not have played with wet marbles, but having better gripping fingers and feet would certainly have been advantageous as they clambered about and foraged for food along lake-shores and by rivers.

It would be interesting to see, observed Dr Smulders, just how many other animals displayed this trait - in particular, in primates.

"If it's in many, many primates then my guess is that the original function might have been locomotion through wet vegetation or wet trees. Whereas, if it's just in humans that we see this then we might consider something much more specific, such as foraging in and along rivers and the like." - BBC
