While preparing for this Sunday's Beyond The Edge Radio show with our guest Rev. Robin Swope, I ran across the following article:
The controversy surrounding an appearance by a psychic medium at the Craic Theatre in Coalisland, has taken another interesting turn after a local priest voiced his concerns about such shows.
Speaking in a personal capacity, Fr John McCallion, curate in Clonoe Parish, said those who have attended such occasions or “find attraction” in them, must mention that in the Sacrament of Confession as it is “a serious sin”.
Fr McCallion was commenting on the show hosted by Belfast based psychic medium, Claire Ziritt, at the Craic Theatre tomorrow night, Friday.
He said: “The Old Testament quite clearly states that those who consult with ghosts or spirits or who seek evidence from the dead commit an offence before God (cf Deut 18:9-14), since in all things, praise is due to God and to Him alone. Spiritualism as with other occult practices, are according to a experienced exorcist, Fr Jeremy Davies, practices which are in fact “an invitation to the Devil, an invitation with which he (the Devil) readily accepts...” Davies, Fr J. Exorcism from a Catholic Perspective (CTS 2009) p.18.
“That statement may seem outlandish in this present time, but all turning away from God, is a turning away from our chief good and thus opens or leaves one vulnerable to attacks from demonic or preternatural forces; even such “innocent practices” as reiki or enneagram can be an opening by which such forces can and enter in.
Fr McCallion also said he agreed with concerns raised by Coalisland charity worker, Bosco McShane, who claimed psychic mediumship can have potentially harmful effects on those who are grieving or experiencing emotional distress.
The local clergyman continued: “In our secular age, with its abandonment of God and religious practice, the turning to superstitious practices are a natural fall back in order to fill the void and as such, the demand for the ministry of exorcism has increased.
“I believe that Mr McShane is correct that such practices give false hope to vulnerable people and that the only source of peace and hope is having confidence in the Risen Christ; any other way does not provide such a comfort. Finally, to those who do find attraction or have attended such occasions then they must mention that in Confession, as- mentioned above- it is a serious sin.” - TyroneTimes
NOTE: I will agree that there has been a increase of spiritual / entity activity worldwide...but not for the reasons given by Fr. McCallion. We are experiencing a new age, and continue to edge closer to alternate realms. The statement 'such practices give false hope to vulnerable people' is incredible to me. This is exactly my interpretation of most organized religions and their continuous force-feeding of dogma on the masses. BTW, why does the Catholic Church still refuse to explain their compliance with the Nazis...the largest purveyors of the occult in modern history? Lon
