An amazing image of the elusive big-fin squid
Magnapinna squids are one of the deep-sea more ethereal creatures. Little is known of these squid as very few have ever been captured, although over the last decade with the increased usage of remotely operated vehicles (ROV) and submersibles more and more video is emerging of them. They are unusual in both that the fins are up to 90% of the length of the body, i.e. the mantle, and the ridiculously long length of the arms. The squid often will hold some of the arms at a 90˚ angles from the side of the body. Wikipedia has a nice entry on the history of their discovery.
On November 11, 2007., a Shell oil company ROV capture a Magnapinna on video at a depth of 2386 meters (~1.5 miles). Someone used the video to produce a single image of this individual. It was subsequently posted to Reddit. - Video - Deep Sea News

Vatican will display bones of St. Peter
On 26 June 1968, as much of Europe was busy rebelling against authority and fighting for free love, Pope Paul VI made a dramatic announcement that put the Roman Catholic church back in the headlines for reasons other than its stance on women, abortion or contraception.
Bones discovered in a Roman cemetery in the Vatican, he declared, had been identified "in a way we believe to be convincing" as those of Saint Peter, the Christian martyr who is traditionally held to have been the first pope and died 1,950 years ago.
But despite the 1968 announcement, the bones remained hidden. That will change on Sunday, when fragments are to be displayed in public as part of celebrations to mark the end of the Year of Faith, an initiative launched by Pope Benedict XVI, who resigned this year.
The fragments, contained in an urn usually kept in a private papal chapel, will be presented for public veneration in St Peter's Square at a mass celebrated by Pope Francis. Read more at The Guardian
Big Black Ghost
"Panic, commotion and complete chaos was witnessed as ambulance after ambulance with unconscious and semi-conscious women workers of a garment factory in Landhi started pulling up in front of the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre's emergency section on Monday morning (October 29)." This was the opening paragraphs of ghost haunting in a leading newspaper.
I am certain I and everyone else who read the paper must have savoured the whole news item down to the last printed word. Not because we believe in ghosts but such a story of a big black ghost haunting a factory washroom (or for that matter any place in the city) is so irresistible. We love ghost stories; actually believing them to be true is another matter.
In the young days of my generation there was a world-wide cult of the supernatural. There was voodoo, table rapping, fortune telling, tarot cards, palm reading, and spine chilling novels and books like The Satanic Bible The Exorcist, Damean, The Amityville Horror, The Shining... the list is endless. Last year I finally gave away my vast collection of supernatural literature. On re-reading them I did not find them scary anymore, and they were taking up seven feet of a bookshelf.
The Karachi haunting happened just days before Halloween, a festival held every 31st of October in many western countries, but especially in the USA where many people have realised all this supernatural humbug is old hat. Nobody is really scared as they used to be, and it is only commerce and trade that has kept the festival alive. Certain states actually banned the festival. People have seen so much horror in cinema and TV drama that they are immune and not scared. Read more at BRecorder
