Westboro leader quits and apologizes for church's activities

They're known worldwide as the group from Kansas that protests at soldiers' funerals, and says God hates America because it allows homosexuality. Now, Westboro Baptist Church is reacting to the defection of a key member.

"She just decided she did not want to obey God," spokesman Steve Drain says. "She did not want to obey scripture."

She is Megan Phelps-Roper. The 27-year-old had risen to become a leader in the family church founded by her grandfather.

In a blog post, Phelps-Roper explains she and her 19-year-old sister, Grace changed their way of thinking. She doesn't go into detail but says she and her sister regret the hurt they have inflicted on others by participating in the Westboro group's activities. Read what she writes by clicking here.

"Wow!" author Paul Ibbetson says. Ibbetson researched Westboro for a book. We talked to him from his office in Hays.

"They are a very tight-knit group--very cultish in my opinion," Ibbetson says. "With folks like that--real intolerant and hold a tight reign--it's kind of surprising that you'd see anyone that close in the family, break away and take off. I'd be concerned for those girls leaving with the intolerance I dealt with."

Flying Squid

The mollusc propels itself out of the ocean by shooting a jet of water at high pressure, before opening its fins to glide at up to 11.2 metres per second, Jun Yamamoto of Hokkaido University said.

Olympic Gold medallist Bolt averaged 10.31 metres a second when he bagged gold in London last year.

"There were always witnesses and rumours that said squid were seen flying, and we have proved that it really is true," Yamamoto told AFP.

Yamamoto and his team were tracking a shoal of around 100 oceanic squid in the northwest Pacific 600 kilometres (370 miles) east of Tokyo, in July 2011.

As their boat approached, the 20 centimetre (8-inch) creatures launched themselves into the air with a powerful jet of water that shot out from their funnel-like stems.

"Once they finish shooting out the water, they glide by spreading out their fins and arms," Yamamoto's team said in a report.

"As they land back in the water, the fins are all folded back into place to minimise the impact."

A picture researchers snapped shows more than 20 of the creatures in full flight above the water, droplets of water from their propulsion jet clearly visible.

The squid are in the air for about three seconds and travel upwards of 30 metres, said Yamamoto, in what he believed was a defence mechanism to escape being eaten.

But, he added, being out of the ocean opened a new front, leaving the cephalopods vulnerable to other predators.

"This finding means that we should no longer consider squid as things that live only in the water. It is highly possible that they are also a source of food for sea birds."

"I Was Trying To Make The Horse Have A Baby"

When it comes to post-arrest statements, the admissions made by a Texas man busted for having sex with a horse are a good reminder why suspects should take advantage of their right to remain silent.

In a statement given to a sergeant with the Wharton County Sheriff’s Office, Andrew Mendoza, 29, waived his assorted rights and told of a late night encounter with a brown horse.

Mendoza, who had been waiting to hear from his girlfriend, noted that, “I told myself that if she didn’t call me I was going to go next door and mess with the neighbor’s horse.”

Which is what occurred, Mendoza, seen at right, told Sergeant Raymond Jansky.

“I was trying to make the horse have a baby,” Mendoza explained. “I was thinking it would have a horseman baby.” He added, “I ain’t going to lie, I blew a nut in the horse. I then got off the bucket and put my clothes back on and left. I promise that I have not been back over to the horse since that time.”

The horse lover, whose rap sheet included a wide variety of felony and misdemeanor collars, later pleaded guilty to public lewdness and criminal trespass and was sentenced to four months in jail.

Mendoza’s criminal career subsequently ended when he hanged himself in a county jail, where he was being held on indecency with a child and trespassing charges. - The Smoking Gun

Half Sheep, Half Human

Reports of a “half sheep, half human” creature born to an adult sheep in the town of Sokoto, Nigeria, have locals claiming witchcraft or beastiality was at work while more reasonable answers like birth complications have come from officials.

The Daily Sun (via the Huffington Post) reports that the delivery made on Jan. 22 at Fakon Idi Veterinary Clinic drew crowds and shocked onlookers to the point where Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps had to get involved to disperse them:

Garba Aminu, a commercial motorcycle rider, averred: “This is an abomination in our land. To see a sheep give birth to a half human being is a mystery and that shows how terrible some people are. It is unimaginable that some people will be having intercourse with animals.”

Another onlooker, who simply gave his name as Danladi, wondered how such a development could happen in a morally upright state like Sokoto where the Islamic faith is so deep.

But Dr. Ismail Usman with the Veterinary Clinic in the state Ministry of Forestry and Animal Health put rumors to rest, lamenting the fact that such a fantastical idea would even be discussed:

“It was a surprise that people’s perspective could be so negative when it comes to scientific reasoning and thoughts. In fact, the meaning attached to the development on the pregnant sheep by the onlookers was embarrassing.” Dr. Usman stated.

He explained that the sheep was supposed to have been delivered two days earlier but could not, a situation that he described as unusual among animals, especially sheep. - The Blaze

Beings Entering My Apartment

Nacogdoches, Texas: I am being visited every nite by these beings......they are translucent and somewhat transparent, but in the darkness I can see them coming thru my bedroom, thru a portal I guess. They walk into my living room and sit on my furniture and floor. They disrupt my electronics..ie: phone and computer. Since I have recently started trying to get help with all of this, I have contacted a few sightings places, but no one has returned a phone call. Dont know if they are blocking my phone calls TOO. I see them and they are now being hostile toward me, because Im seeking help. I do feel that my life is at risk and would like help proving there existence in my life.........I ask that you look on the internet at the "morgan city monster". That is exactly what one or more of these beings looks like. I am being very sincere and I have much more to share with you people, but getting help seems to be harder that I thought. - MUFON CMS
