Archive: One of the Oddest Accounts I've Ever Read....

This narrative was forwarded to me in April 2010 and created quite a stir when I posted it. The story is truly one of the oddest accounts I've ever read. Its been a slow news day so I decided to post it again for the newer readers. Enjoy...

Several weeks ago, I called a reader who contacted me and wanted to discuss an incident his late father had written about. After a lengthy conversation and several emails, he agreed to forward the text. This is one of the oddest accounts I have ever read though I was intrigued by the possible implications:

Lon - my name is Ken and I am a reader of your blog. I would like to share a disturbing encounter my father wrote about. He passed away last year and had kept a journal which I found in his safe. There was a separate sheet of paper, folded with an envelope and placed in the journal. I suspect it was a letter he had intended to send at some point. It was dated October 25, 2002, though there was no addressee. By that time, we had moved to Arizona. My mother said that my father claimed he had a terrifying personal encounter but never told her the details. My father was a very serious, private and devout man who didn't indulge in drink or other vices. Because of his sincerity, my mother and I believe this story to be true. The following text was in the letter.

Dear Sir

In the summer of 1996, I was living with my family in northern Orange County, California. My wife was visiting relatives so I decided to go out for a bite to eat. I had just finished a late dinner at a local restaurant and started walking through a vacant parking lot. As I walked I saw an square-shaped lighted object hovering overhead. The UFO came closer but I could not hear any sound. There was also a pulsating white light located on the bottom. After a few seconds, the object simply vanished. I was stunned and stood there for a few minutes wondering if the object would return.

I continued to walk through the lot, coming to the entrance on the backside that led into an alley. As I walked through the well-illuminated alley, I noticed ahead of me a strange creature looking through a row of hedges. I stopped walking and crouched down behind a car so the creature could not see me. I realize that the description will seem ridiculous, but this is what I witnessed. The creature was about 4-5 foot tall and a bit frail looking. He wore a one-piece light blue bodysuit that had an iridescent look to it. It wore high black boots that seemed to glow from the bottom. The face had a well pronounced chin, tiny round eyes, holes where the ears should had been and a large bald head. As I watched, the creature looked like it was having trouble walking.

I continued to watched as it looked around the hedges and in a garbage can, then disappearing behind a garage. After a few seconds, I heard strange popping sounds. I continued to crouch down by the car wondering if the creature would come back. After a few minutes my curiosity got the best of me, so I raised up and started to slowly walk in the direction of the garage. As I neared, a tall hairy ape-like creature emerged from behind the garage into the alley while looking directly at me. I was stunned as my legs gave way and I dropped to the ground in horror. It had no clothing, with large, long hairy arms and red glowing eyes. In a weird way, this 'thing' didn't look solid, almost like a ghost or hologram. It made a few grunting sounds, turned around and started to run down the alley towards the woods at the dead end.

When I arrived home, I realized that my walk and encounter on the way lasted over 2 hours, though the distance of the restaurant and my house was only a few blocks. I wondered if I should report the incident but thought it was too ridiculous and I would never be believed anyway. Later, I told my story to my pastor as well as a friend at church, but both refused to take it seriously. I went back to the alley several times to see if any evidence could be found, for example, the light blue body suit and boots since I was sure that this was a metamorphic event.

Through the years, I began to wonder if this creature was actually a Bigfoot or Sasquatch. I have never heard any conjecture of Bigfoot as an extraterrestrial but I suppose it is possible. Can you elaborate on my experience? Please forward copies to other experts if you feel it is appropriate. Sincerely (unsigned)

NOTE: I want to thank Ken for coming forward though, he had several concerns about his father's account being published. Ken did ask that if anybody has information on this event or, specifically, if his father (Kenneth, Sr.) may have contacted anyone in reference to the event to forward it...Lon

Iran Cleric Pummeled by ‘Badly Covered’ Woman After Warning

An Iranian cleric said he was beaten by a woman in the northern province of Semnan after giving her a warning for being “badly covered,” the state-run Mehr news agency reported.

Hojatoleslam Ali Beheshti said he encountered the woman in the street while on his way to the mosque in the town of Shahmirzad, and asked her to cover herself up, to which she replied “you, cover your eyes,” according to Mehr. The cleric repeated his warning, which he said prompted her to insult and push him.

“I fell on my back on the floor,” Beheshti said in the report. “I don’t know what happened after that, all I could feel was the kicks of this woman who was insulting me and attacking me.”

Since the 1979 revolution that brought Shiite Muslim religious leaders to power, women in Iran have been required to cover their hair and body curves in public with head-scarves and loose-fitting coats, to protect religious values and “preserve society’s morals and security.”

The government condemns short, tight and colorful coats and loosely tied head-scarves, and routinely organizes police patrols to enforce the Islamic dress code. Public surveillance increases in summer when some women opt for flimsier clothing.

Beheshti said he was hospitalized for three days. The Iranian cleric said it was his religious duty to apply the principle of “commanding right and forbidding wrong,” and that he would continue to do so even after living through what he called “the worst day of my life.”

It isn’t the first time that clerics in Iran have been beaten up after delivering warnings, Mehr said. - bloomberg

Other Russian Lake Monsters...

Lake Koskol, in the former Russian province of Kazakhstan, was reported to hold a plesiosaur-like, Lake Monster .The first account of the creature to reach western ears was reportedly broadcast on a Soviet radio program in 1977. These reports suggested that the animal was most likely prehistoric in origin.

'Nature' magazine carried an article in 1977,( just after Sir Peter Scott had given a scientific genre name to 'Nessie' ),that 'Koskolteras Rhombopterix' might have been seen in Lake Kos Kol in Kazakhstan. The monster was 15 metres long with a large, 2m x 1m head. It quoted an unnamed commentator on Moscow radio observing that since several "extinct" species had been recently rediscovered to be still surviving, it was possible that "unknown creatures of the kind reported in both these lakes" might, indeed, exist.

I could find nothing since then that had been reported about the monster. However that doesn't mean there hasn't been more reports. Please leave a comment if you know of any new sightings. Continue reading at Some Other Russian Lake Monsters

Pope John XXIII met an Extraterrestrial

One of the most spectacular revelations already disclosed on the Vatican tells the story reported by the assistant of Pope John XXIII (1881-1963) who, in statements to the press in 2005 (at the time being already 90 years old) said the strangest event involving His Holiness was a meeting between His Holiness and a man from another planet, an alien. According to the papal secretary, Loris Capolvilla (one of the oldest Catholic bishops in 2012), Pope John XXIII would have had a contact with a friendly alien in the gardens of the papal summer residence in Castel Gandolfo.

The incident happened in July 1961 when John XXIII, also called the Pope walked in Good Company Capolvilla. After walking a few minutes there, both observed a strange object in the sky oval emanating a bright light-colored blue and amber. The ship remained in the air for a few moments before landing on the lawn. Then, a being with human form surrounded by a golden aura and elongated ears left the spacecraft.

Pope and his secretary knelt, even without knowing exactly what they were seeing – and began to pray believing that it was a phenomenon or heavenly miracle. After a moment, the Pope decided to approach the creature and began talking to the stranger. This conversation lasted about 20 minutes. After the confab, the Pope returned to meet with the secretary and confided to him the following message: The children of God are everywhere though, sometimes have difficulty recognizing our own brothers. then declared that he would talk more on the subject and John XXIII never revealed, not even to their most loyal employees the unusual event.

Recently, Vatican officials commented on the high probability of the existence of intelligent extraterrestrial life or, indeed causing controversy even among the religious. One of these statements came from the director of the Center for Astronomical Observations Vatican, José Gabriel Funes, in an interview with the official newspaper of the Holy See, L’Osservatore Romano, said that not only exists but that extraterrestrial life would she work of God. JOHN XXIII, POPE occultist John XXIII is a mysterious character. Reportedly one of the few members of the Summit of the twentieth century Vatican formally initiated into the mysteries of esoteric tradition.

As Pope, showed how far he was allowed to, information regarding the Third Secret of Fatima, prophesying future events of a political nature and cosmic. Predicted the death of President JF Kennedy. The Italian writer Pier Carpi (1940-2000), who wrote about the secrets of Count Cagliostro also held up the unofficial biography of Pope prophet. Carpi would have had access to this data through a mysterious source, undisclosed, described by Carpi just like … an old man with a long beard.

The mysterious Eugenio Siracusa (1919-2006 – Italian mystic, reportedly contacted by aliens from childhood), would also be responsible for the safekeeping of certain documents that would have shared with Carpi. PROPHECIES OF A POPE John XXIII had left, the esoteric order to which he belonged, texts containing a series of prophecies. Some were posted by Pier Carpi, others remain secret.About the mysteries of mankind and the aliens, the Pope reportedly said: “rolls will be found in the Azores. will speak about ancient civilizations and teach men about things long past. rolls will talk about things of heaven. Signals are increasingly numerous. lights of heaven are red, green and blue. São fast. Someone comes from afar and want to meet men on Earth. Meetings are already happening. remain But who really saw silent “…. - O PAPA JOÃO XXIII E O EXTRATERRESTE

Lloyd Pye: 'Starchild' Update

According to the AMMACH Project Starchild researcher Lloyd Pye author of Human Origins: Intervention Theory revealed the following information in front of a small audience at StarChild Sponsor Belinda McKenzie's Highgate residence in the UK:

Revelations in this update:

1) Though from a very short 'humanoid'...this is the skull of an adult being.

2) The thin-boned tough-boned i.e. fiber-reinforced tooth-enamel-like skull of the Starchild has a capacity of 1600cc, that's 200cc more than a full-grown human adult.

3) A piece of collagen was discovered in the area of the eye. From this sample, it was determined that the eye of this being was fixed and the outer lens that we associate with Grays (the black almond-shaped eye) is actually some sort of lens giving 180 degree vision.

Click for the video - Lloyd Pye

From what I can gather from the video, Lloyd is stating that the Starchild skull is actually 'the skull of an adult Gray'. In our last interview with Lloyd at 'Beyond The Edge Radio, he stated the characteristics of the fiber-reinforced tooth-enamel-like skull. The other information, in reference to the Starchild being an adult and the eye collagen discovery and configuration, is new. I intend on contacting Lloyd for an update after he returns from his series of lectures in the UK.

I posted the following information the day after our most recent interview:

Researcher / author Lloyd Pye joined Beyond The Edge Radio Sunday evening and discussed his ongoing research into the Starchild Project and Intervention Theory. Lloyd presented new strong evidence that the Starchild Skull is indeed extraterrestrial in origin.

Podcast - Lloyd Pye on 'Beyond The Edge Radio' - June 17, 2012

More information can be found at

In the interview, Lloyd stated that he had intended to prove that the skull was a cross between a normal human female and an extraterrestrial male. With more sophisticated DNA testing available, he's not only uncovered potential alien DNA, he thinks the Starchild Skull may be entirely alien.

As well, you may want to check out Peruvian "coneheads" possible aliens?. In June 2011, Lloyd Pye received samples from several Peruvian "conehead" skulls. Thanks to the diligent work of Brien Foerster, who has a website at Hidden Inca Tours and obtained the samples, Lloyd's geneticist is now working to obtain viable DNA results from these unusual skulls for comparison to the Starchild Skull. Results are not anticipated until later in 2011. but apart from the Starchild Skull, these Peruvian relics provide the best possibility for obtaining alien DNA.

Lord Martin Rees: Aliens Fascinate Everyone, But Only Kooks See UFOs

Astronomers -- the men and women who study the stars, galaxies and beyond -- have an almost universal agreement that there's nothing of scientific interest when it comes to the subject of UFOs.

In fact, many professionals who gaze into the heavens actually speak about UFO sightings with disdain -- even though countless military officials, heads of state, newsmakers and commercial pilots have said they've seen unidentified flying objects.

"No serious astronomer gives any credence to any of these stories," said Lord Martin Rees, the official U.K. astronomer royal.

Rees, author of the new book, From Here to Infinity: A Vision for the Future of Science told The Huffington Post that, while "everyone's fascinated by aliens," he's in favor of the ongoing SETI Institute program -- the search for extraterrestrial intelligence.

"We should look by all possible techniques," Rees said. "We've no idea what's out there, and so we should look for anything that might seem to be some sort of artifact rather than something natural."

While Rees said he hopes real extraterrestrials will be detected within the next 40 years, he's completely and "utterly unconvinced" that any ETs have been visiting Earth.

"I think most astronomers would dismiss these," Rees said. "I dismiss them because if aliens had made the great effort to traverse interstellar distances to come here, they wouldn't just meet a few well-known cranks, make a few circles in corn fields and go away again."

Nevertheless, in a recent HuffPost blog, SETI Institute senior astronomer Seth Shostak wrote about the daily emails he receives from people describing "alien sightings, extraterrestrial plans for Earth, and agitated screeds about the reluctance of scientists to take the whole subject seriously."

Shostak said very few of those emails "are penned by hoaxers. The correspondents are sincere, and many simply wish to help us in our search for evidence of extraterrestrial intelligence."

While Shostak may at first appear sympathetic to folks claiming that aliens are already here, he said he sees no real evidence.

"It's hard to believe that the aliens have cleverly arranged things so that only governments can find convincing evidence of their presence. ... The fact is, if you're certain that our planet is hosting alien visitors, the way to gain acceptance for your point of view is to prove it." Stephen King to publish sequel to 'The Shining'

Fans of Steven King horror novels are counting the days until he publishes the sequel to one of his greatest spine chillers The Shining. The book is due to come out on September 24th, thirty five years after he published his first saga.

Although little is known about the plot, it’s clear that the long-awaited follow-up novel, Doctor Sleep, depicts Danny Torrance, the young boy who survived the bloody events of The Shining.

According to King's official website, the lead character encounters "a twelve-year-old girl he must save from a tribe of murderous paranormals."

The Shining has sold over a million copies since it was first published in 1977.

The prolific multi-award winning author is often referred to as a writing machine: he has released a novel every year since 2001.

His books are in demand by filmmakers who are ready to adapt King’s novels for the silver screen even before he finishes them. According to Hollywood Reporter, nine of his books are in development for TV or film adaptations, with more are being added nearly every month.

The biggest rumor, Hollywood Reporter claims, is that Warner Bros. is allegedly working on a prequel film to The Shining. Those who watched the movie starring Jack Nicholson and adapted for the big screen by Stanley Kubrick claimed it was the scariest film ever made. Whether King would be involved in revamping his bestselling story for the Hollywood project is unknown. - RT

China rounds up and puts its beggars in they couldn't spoil the fun at town fair

Beggars at a religious folk festival in southern China have been ordered to stay in purposely built cages, or be removed from the festivities. Organisers gave the beggars an ultimatum saying their presence ruins the experience for visitors at the temple fair in Nanchang, Jiangxi province and if they wished to beg they had to do so from inside small cages. The zoo-like cages are so small adults are unable to stand and although they are free to leave at will, they are immediately banished from the festival area and have to leave the city if they do so.

The annual fair celebrates a religious holy day with a funfair, market and entertainment as pilgrims come to the temple from all over China. Due to the thousands of visitors it has become a magnet for down-and-outs looking for charity from festival-goers. ‘This year we decided we would no longer accept beggars wandering everywhere, distressing our guests and spoiling it for everyone else,' explained one organiser before adding that no one is forcing them to beg and that they have voluntarily entered the cages. Over the last few years we have had increasing numbers of beggars turning up at the festival and it was becoming very intruding for our visitors. They were being harassed and made to feel uncomfortable.

‘We had no choice but to ban them from the grounds. We found the cages a good solution for everyone. People can still give them donations if they desire too but are not harassed and followed around the festival when they are having a day out with their families. The beggars are quite comfortable in their cages, people send them food and water as gifts. In a way it is better for them there than having to find a place on the busy streets. Our guests come here to enjoy themselves and that is our top priority. The beggars can leave whenever they like but they have to leave the city too, they can't go into the fair,’ they added.

The cages have infuriated human rights campaigners in China who have branded them a human zoo. ‘They are treating them like zoo animals. What will they have to do next - tricks for their food?‘ said one. ‘They are kept behind iron railings at the entrance to the fair, they are supplied with water and food by festival organisers but have to eat it stuck in these cages. This is nothing less than public humiliation. Do they want people to believe the region has no poor people and just put on a good show? These people need help. We should not be allowing them to be locked away in cages. These people are human beings too.’ - dailymail

Wyoming Double Rainbow Photo Stuns Onlookers

Wyoming resident Jonmikel Pardo took this spectacular photograph of a double rainbow on Sep. 1. from his backyard in Lander, Wyo.

"It was just after a fast-moving thunderstorm passed through," he told OurAmazingPlanet. "There was a break in the clouds just as the sun was about to set behind the mountains. The break was large enough to allow the full sunlight through and the rainbow was incredibly bright, even more so with the dark storm surrounding us."

Pardo takes photographs mostly as a hobby, but has had his work included in several regional publications and Boys Life magazine.

To see a rainbow, you need two ingredients: sunlight and raindrops. When sunlight passes through a prism — in this case, drops of water — some of the light is refracted, or bent, more than other portions, based on the wavelength (or color) of the different parts of the light spectrum. Light leaving the prism then spreads out into a continuous band of colors called a spectrum.

As in this case, sometimes a secondary bow forms outside the primary, giving the look of a double rainbow. It's always fainter and usually disappears more quickly than the primary. - THP

Nesski: Lake Labynkyr

Russian academics are calling for a scientific probe into claims of a 'Siberian Loch Ness monster' in one of the world's remotest lakes.

Researchers using underwater scanners have found evidence of 'Nesski' - measuring up to 33 feet in length - in the deep waters of Lake Labynkyr, says a new report.

Intriguingly, the evidence is at a lake where native Evenk and Yakut people have long claimed an underwater creature lurks.

The evidence includes a picture which, it is claimed, shows the monster, says the Siberian Times.

Known as ‘the Devil', testimony dating back to the 19th century says the monster has enormous jaws.

Associate Professor Lyudmila Emeliyanova, of Moscow State University, told The Siberian Times that on her own scientific mission to Labynkyr she recorded ‘several seriously big underwater objects’ with sonar readings.

Images have also recently emerged from a 2006 scientific trip to the lake when strange objects - one of 21ft 4in (6.5 metres) in length - were recorded on a Humminbird Piranha MAX 215 Portable fish-finder at a depth of 138 to 197 feet.

Territory: Lake Labynkyr in Siberia, the alleged home of a giant 'Nesski' monster
Based on the sonic readings, researchers drew how the creature might look in real-life on the fish-finder's screen.

‘It was our fourth or fifth day at the lake when our echo sounding device registered a huge object in the water under our boat," said Dr Emeliyanova of her own close encounter.

It was clearly alive and too large to be one of the dozen or so known fish species in the lake.

‘The object was very dense, of homogeneous structure, surely not a fish nor a shoal of fish, and it was above the bottom," she said.

‘I was very surprised but not scared nor shocked, after all we did not see this animal, we only registered a strange object in the water. But I can clearly say - at the moment, as a scientist, I cannot offer you any explanation of what this object might be.’

Other similar findings since her 2002 mission mean that a new scientific mission to discover the truth is essential, said Dr Emeliyanova, a biogeographer.

‘I believe there is a mystery in this lake because there is no smoke without fire,’ she said.

She was told an account of two fishermen who were ‘in a 10 metre long boat when suddenly the bow began to rise as if somebody was pushing it from under the water.

'It was a heavy boat, only a huge and strong animal can do such a thing. The fishermen were stuck by fear. They did not see anything, no head, no jaws.’

Another 'sighting' came when a group of Russian geologists were fishing in the lake.

‘Suddenly those in the boat started screaming - apparently they saw a huge head of some creature. Others, who were waiting for them on shore, started shooting, and scared the creature away,’ said a witness.

A 1953 sighting of a 'monster' in neighbouring Lake Vorota by respected Soviet geologist Viktor Tverdokhlebov was initially covered up by the Soviet authorities.

But now Dr Emeliyanova wants to investigate a theory that the two lakes are linked by underground tunnels.

Strangely, despite being close to Oymyakon, the coldest inhabited town on Earth, the lake does not freeze completely in winter.

There has been speculation in Russia that Labynkyr and Vorota might be inhabited by a school of ichthyosaurs, prehistoric marine reptiles resembling dolphins or sharks, or plesiosaurs, a popular theory concerning 'Nessie' in Scotland which is often depicted with a long neck.

Another version is that relic killer whales could have become marooned in Labynkyr when it was attached to the sea.

Some accounts even suggest the 'creature' makes a hideous primeval cry as it attacks its prey.

‘Personally, I do believe that when the information about something strange circulates among local people for so many years, it just can't be groundless, it means something is there,’ said Dr Emeliyanova.

’I know the local people very well - they are ingenuous but they do not lie.’

She stressed: ‘There are many lakes in Yakutia and around the Indigirka River, hundreds of them, big and small, their shores are more or less populated, but all the talk is about Labynkyr and Vorota lakes, and it has gone on for many dozens of years.
'It makes us think about it. And these stories about the local monster are older than those about the Loch Ness monster.’ - dailymail

Eyewitness Account

Accounts began reaching the outside world after nine geologists led by Viktor Tverdokhlebov, of the East Siberian branch of the Soviet Academy of Sciences, were involved in an expedition to this remote corner of the then USSR in the summer of 1953, a few months after the death of Stalin. As they rode on horseback, their guide was the elderly Varfolomey Vinokurov, a local man.

It took eight years for his diary account to be published in a Soviet magazine and this referred to his own sighting in Lake Vorota - a name which literally 'Gates' (an unusual name for a lake, perhaps signifying Gates of the Devil?) while also including historical accounts he heard from locals.

'30 May. We left Tomtor village, went 70 kilometres up the Kuidusun Valley, turned left and got to the large Sordonnokhskoe plateau. Ahead of us there is Lake Labynkyr where there is storage with food and equipment.

'There are many legends about this Lake Labynkyr. In the evenings sitting by the fire our old guide told us that a 'devil' lived in this lake. He is so big that the distance between his eyes, as Varfolomey said, 'is wider than a fisherman's raft made of ten logs'.

'I heard about this 'devil' before and many times. In Ust-Ner, I heard that the devil ate a dog. The dog swam to bring the shot duck to the hunter, then huge jaws raised from the water and the dog just disappeared in a moment.

'One of the Tomtor villagers told me that one day he found a huge bone on the shore of Lake Labynkyr. It was like the devil's jaw - if you put it vertically, you could ride on a horse through it like under an arch. He said this jaw bone remained near the fishermen house on the shore.

'I heard legends how a whole caravan perished going under the ice of Labynkyr. It was spoken that people saw a big horn stuck out of the ice. People gathered around it on ice and tried to take it out but suddenly the ice broke and many people and reindeer died'.

'5 June: Early in the morning we got to the shore of Lake Labynkyr and reached the storage. Comfortable tents with wooden beds and floor and table awaited us.

'7 June: We are having a rest. Lake Labynkyr is a square, 15 km long and 3 km wide. I found the ruined fisherman's house on the shore, carefully explored the house and all around it but did not find any 'jaw bone'.

He did not witness anything untoward in Labynkyr but went on with his expedition.

28 July: Now we stopped at the shore of Lake Vorota. Mikhail made a raft and went to measure the depth. It is 60 meters as in Labynkyr. But the lake itself is much smaller.

30 July: This is what happened today. It was sunny friendly morning, Boris Bashkatov and I went on a walking trip around Lake Vorota. We had to climb rocks on the way - about 11 am the way became dangerous and we decided to go down a bit, closer to the water. Looking at the water from the rock, I clearly saw a terrace under the water with a huge white spot on it. But when I looked at the terrace again a minute later there was no white spot there. 'Maybe sunshine is joking with me', I thought. But suddenly Boris shouted 'Look! What is there, in the middle?' We stopped. Some 300-400 meters away on the water there was clearly seen some white object, shining under the sunlight. 'A barrel', said Boris, 'made of tin.' 'Maybe a horse got into the lake,' I said.

Truly, the object was swimming, and fast enough. It was something alive, some animal. It was making an arch - first along the lake, then right towards us. As it was getting closer, a strange coldness like a stupor was growing inside me. Above the water there was big dark grey body, the white colour has gone. On this dark grey background there were clearly visible two symmetrical light spots looking like eyes and there was just stick in the body - maybe a fin? Or a harpoon of an unlucky fisherman?

'We saw just a part of the animal but we could guess its much bigger, massive body was under the water. We could guess this looking how the monster was moving - raising from the water, it threw its body forward then fully went under the water. At this time the waves were going away from its head, waves originating under the water. 'Flapping its mouth, catching fish', I guessed.

The animal was obviously swimming towards us and the waves made by the animal reached our legs. We looked at each other and immediately began to climb up the rock. What if 'it' goes out of the water? We witnessed a predator, no doubt, one of the strongest predators in this world: such indomitable, merciless and some sensible fierceness was in every his movement, in all its looks.

'The animal stopped some 100 meters away from the shore. Suddenly it began to beat against the water, waves went all ways, we could not understand what was going on. Maybe it lasted just a minute and then the animal was gone, dived. It was only then when I thought about a camera.

'We stood for another 10-20 minutes, it was quiet. We went further.

'There was no doubt, we saw the 'devil' - the legendary monster of this area. The Yakut fisherman was right, the animal had dark grey skin and the distance between its eyes was surely not less than a raft of 10 logs. But he saw it in Labynkyr and we saw it in Vorota lake. They are 20 km away from each other - and they are not connected.

'I recalled that white spot under the water. Obviously, the animal was hunting at that underwater terrace and we scared it when shouted going down the rocks.' - Siberian Times

Labynkyr "Nessie"

In 1953, geologist Victor Tverdokhlebov and a companion spotted a huge creature swimming quickly and jerkily across Lake Labynkyr in eastern Yakutia. When reports of the sighting emerged, public curiosity was piqued, and expeditions embarked on largely fruitless hunts for the Labynkyr "Nessie". Locals weren't surprised by the sighting, and speak of animals pulled down into the water never to be seen again. Suggestions as to the true identity of the mystery monster include a gladiator dolphin somehow stranded in a freshwater lake miles from the nearest ocean, and a giant pike. - A Study Guide to Ufos, Psychic and Paranormal Phenomena in the U.S.S.R.

Russians Report Loch Ness Type Monster

United Press International, Sept. 30, 1963 - MOSCOW - The Soviet Union has its own sea monster with a taste for hunting dogs, Radio Moscow reported today.

The "dragon like creature" lives in Siberia's Lake Labynkyr and has frequently been seen by local inhabitants."

"On one occasion the monster swallowed a hunter's dog," the broadcaster, a student of biology at. Moscow State University said. He cited monster sightings in the west-including one off Brazil and in Loch Ness-and said an expedition had gone to Lake Labynkyr and will return next month.

The lake is 220 miles north of the port of Okhotsk on the Sea of Ohkotsk, east of Alaska.

Mysterious Labynkyr Lake

The legendary lake Labynkyr is situated near the Pole of Cold on the territory of Oimyakon uluss. It is mystical and exotic attraction. Legends speak about the monster that lives deep in the water of the legendary lake and attacks dogs, reindeers and even people. Stories say how one day the monster wiped out a caravan of Even people. There are several documented encounters. The public learned about the monster in the 50′s from the diaries of soviet geologist Tverdohlebov. Since then several expeditions have set out to prove or disprove the existence of a monster. Some say that it is something real, that it could be a huge pike, a water mammoth, a reptile or a plesiosaurus, or even something from the parallel world. The mystery, however is still a mystery. There will always be people who want to solve the mystery, or at least have a glance at the monster. - Yakutia Travel

In a book 'Trip to the Cold Pole', author Gennady Borodnuli recounts another tale from Labynkyr in the 1920s.

'An Evenk family of nomads followed their reindeer and reached the shore of Lake Labynkyr. They decided to stay overnight on the shore. A five year old child went to the bank of a stream which led into the lake while adults were busy. Suddenly the adults heard the boy screaming.

'The father and grandfather rushed to the bank. They stopped on the edge of water and saw the child being carried away by an unknown animal to the centre of the lake. It was a dark creature, with a mouth looking like bird's beak. It held the child and moved away with quick rushes, then it dived leaving huge waves and dragged the child under the water.

'The granddad swore to revenge the 'devil. He took a sack made of animal skin, stuffed it with reindeer fur, rags, dry grass and pine trees needles, put a smouldering piece of wood inside. He attached the sack to a huge stone on shore with a rope and then threw the sack far into the waters of the lake.

'At night there was noise and splashes and terrible screams of the 'devil'. In the morning the waves brought the huge dead animal, about seven meters long with a huge jaw, almost one third size of the body, and relatively small legs and fins.

'The old man cut the animal's stomach, took out the body of his grandson, and buried him on the bank of the stream. Since then this stream is called 'The Stream of a Child'.

'It is hard to say what happened to the remains of the animal but this jaw was put like an arch on the shore.'

Just the Facts?: China Makes ET Priority -- Jesus Referenced 'Wife' -- NASA Developing Real Warp Drive

China makes extraterrestrials a priority

Space exploration has become a national priority for China — and a Hong Kong scientist appointed to an international body searching for alien life says he is confident many of us will live to see the first evidence of extra-terrestrial life.

It was at the opening of the General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union in Beijing that it dawned upon Professor Sun Kwok, the University of Hong Kong's dean of science, just how seriously China takes the quest for space exploration.

To the surprise and delight of Kwok and his colleagues, the assembly at the end of August was opened by the country's Vice-President Xi Jinping who made it clear China was determined to be not only a world leader but a pioneer in intergalactic affairs too.

"Vice-President Xi gave a very good speech," said Kwok. "It seems he has a substantial plan on how China will move forward in the field of astronomy. I have no doubt China will make substantial financial investments both in the space program and putting facilities in Antarctica.

"China is moving full steam ahead. China wants to be a major partner in the world scene of astronomy and the simple fact that Vice-President Xi was at the assembly is a great indication that this is a matter of national priority."

It was an address that clearly fired the enthusiasm of the scientists. "He indicated in his speech that China considers this (field) to be important and has every intention to invest more to participate more," said Kwok.

"Personally, I am interested in international collaboration. I want China to participate more because in the past it has been a primarily American and European affair."

With global interest in space exploration currently at its highest level in years as the NASA rover Curiosity beams extraordinary images from the surface of Mars, there have been few better times to be involved in the field of astronomy.

There have been few more opportune times, either, to be involved in the search for alien life, Kwok believes — and at the Beijing assembly, he was elected vice-president of the International Astronomical Union's bio-astronomy Commission 51 for the next three years.

The commission is a dedicated body of scientists searching for evidence of extra-terrestrial life and Kwok — believed to be its first Chinese member — is convinced it is a search that will be rewarded within the lifetimes of many people alive today.

"My guess is that we will find evidence of life outside our planet within 50 years — but it might be as soon as 20 years," he said.

"When I say life I don't mean aliens, or ET walking around. Most likely what we are looking for now are micro-organisms — bacteria. We have very strong indications that there is a good chance we will find extra-terrestrial micro-organisms very soon."

Kwok's estimates are based on recent findings about the "very extreme environments" that bacteria have been found in on our own planet. "We find them in Antarctica. We find them in the hot (volcanic springs) in Chile, we find them under deep water thermal vents, under very hot and very unfavorable conditions," he said.

"They seem to be everywhere, and if you look at Mars, from what we have learnt from the past rovers, the condition of Mars is very similar to these harsh conditions on earth. In terms of environment, there is no reason why we cannot find micro-organisms on Mars.

"I think there is a lot of activity on Mars and that is a good place to look. There are other kinds of missions being planned and other places like Titan and Europa that are interesting. The conditions are very favorable there — they have atmosphere, they have oceans — and all of these things offer possibilities of finding life."

Kwok's work is in the field of bio-astronomy, or astrobiology — a relatively new scientific field that involves the study of the origin, evolution and distribution of life in the universe. Commission 51 is at its cutting edge.

Discoveries in recent years had made the field "a very hot topic" and significantly raised scientific expectations of discovering life outside our planet, Kwok said.

"We are excited for several reasons," he said. "I myself have been working on organic compounds in space for the last 10 or 15 years and we have been finding very complex organic substances being made by stars in the solar system. These are considered to be the building blocks of life. So if nature is able to manufacture very complex organic substances, life may be very common.

"The second thing is there has also been a lot of activity in the past 10 years in the search for so-called extra-solar planets. In our solar system we have eight planets. But there are 100 billion stars in our Milky Way galaxy and each of them is most likely to have planets.

"In the past we assumed they would have planets but we never had any evidence for it. But in the last 15 years we have found over 700 extra-solar planets — planets around other stars.

"A European mission which went to Titan (the largest moon of Saturn) and landed on the surface found a lot of organics there. They found an interesting surface geology and an environment which seems to be very favourable to the presence of life. All of these things make this commission an extremely exciting and timely one."

Whether the current missions in space discover evidence of existing life or past life, long ago extinguished, remains to be seen. Kwok believes either discovery would have an enormous impact.

"In the case of Mars, we really don't know what to expect," he said. "We could find evidence of past life — for example in fossils. We could find existing life — life which is still on-going. Both are possible.

"There is the possibility that life existed say a few billion years ago on Mars but is now extinguished. I wouldn't rule out that possibility.

"On earth, human beings have only been around for 100,000 years but bacteria have been around for three billion years. They have been around much, much longer and there are a lot more bacteria than mammals or birds. They are the dominant species.

"We are not looking for ET or aliens in the popular sense. We are looking for life in the basic forms like bacteria but even that is extremely important to us because we have only one example of biology as of now.

"If we find life elsewhere, even a lowly bacteria it would give us a totally new look on the working of biology. It would no longer be restricted to one example — you would have other examples of how biochemistry could be at work."

While he is careful to dismiss the idea that anyone should expect to find or detect an ET-style alien in the search for other life forms, Kwok's answer to the question of whether intelligent life might exist somewhere else in the universe is surprisingly unequivocal.

"Oh yes, yes," he replies. "I think a lot of scientists also hold the opinion that there is intelligent life out there. That is only based on the very simple observation that we are one planet around the sun, the sun is a star and there are 100 billion other stars in the Milky Way galaxy and in the universe there are 100 billion other galaxies.

"There are a huge number of stellar systems out there and we now know that each stellar system has planets. So it is extremely hard to believe out of these hundreds and hundreds of billions of stars, there is no other place that has evolved life in the way we did.

"In my work, we are finding complex organics everywhere. If these organics have to do with the origin of life, that means they are very common. Life could be common elsewhere."

He added: "I have to caution that although this is what we believe and what we speculate we have absolutely no evidence that there is any intelligent life. None has been detected so far."

If intelligent life does exist beyond our planet, Kwok believes it may prove to be more advanced than our own. "We are a relatively young (solar) system," he said. "The Milky Way galaxy is about 10 billion years old and the earth has been around for 4.5 billion years and so-called civilisation has only been around a few thousand years.

"If you have another system which is just say one billion years older than us, their technology might be totally incredible. They would be so far advanced compared to us that we can't even imagine what they are capable of.

"Look back a couple of hundred years: Let's say you go back to 200 years ago in Western Europe. If you showed them a DVD, they would have no idea what it was.

"If your civilisation is 10,000 or 1 million years ahead of us, you can't even imagine the difference. They could all be out there but we have no idea or have awareness of their presence."

No one should be surprised that we have not made contact with intelligent life forms outside our planet so far. "We are trying to contact ET by radio," he said. "Radio is a very primitive technology. To us it may be advanced. We have developed radio for about 100 years now.

"But if there are other civilisations, they may have technology which is totally unthinkable. It is not for us to speculate. As a scientist I want to be practical. We deal with things we can deal with. Exploring the solar system finding other primitive signs of life is practical and achievable."

The discovery of any alien life, however basic or advanced, would have immense implications not only for science but for the whole of mankind, Kwok believes.

Citing the Renaissance astronomer Copernicus who first concluded that the earth moved around the Sun rather than vice-versa, Kwok said: "We used to think we were the center of the universe. Then 500 years ago Copernicus told us that we are just a little planet, no different to Venus, Mars and Jupiter.

"It had a huge, huge impact on society. We were no longer God's favorite creation. The whole of society was turned upside down by Copernicus. I think the discovery of extra-terrestrial life may have similar sociological consequences. It will tell us that we are not alone and we are not unique."

Stars in their eyes

For a growing number of believers in Hong Kong, alien life isn't out there silently waiting to be found: It's already found us and it's hovering above us, watching our every step.

As space exploration becomes an increasingly hot topic, the Hong Kong UFO Club has seen its membership grow from around 150 a decade ago to some 2,500 today, including its Facebook followers.

"Lots of people see UFOs in Hong Kong," said Thomas Tsui, one of the group's organisers. "We have many cases where people see flying saucers but they get no picture. They just relate to us what they see."

Even in an age of smart phones, it seems alien technology is still confounding existing human technology in terms of collecting evidence. "There is too much ambient light in urban Hong Kong and it is hard to use an iPhone to capture a UFO sighting," Tsui said.

Some members have captured striking images and video, however, and a selection of the best pictures and movie sequences were shown to a packed meeting of followers earlier this month.

"I have seen UFOs many times, always in Hong Kong," said Tsui, who said the countryside areas of the New Territories, such as Sai Kung Country Park, were the best areas to see UFOs flying overhead. "They are always out there," he said.

Tsui believes the government is aware of the existence of UFOs but keeps them a secret. "They believe it's not a good idea for the public to know about aliens," he reasoned. "They think it will be too much for them."

Moon Fong, the club's president, said Hong Kong would host its first fully scientific conference on UFO research in November with 1,500 delegates from around the world attending.

She said the Internet and Hollywood's enduring fascination with the theme of aliens had helped interest in UFOs to grow in Hong Kong. "There is an ocean of information about them out there now," Fong said.

As for the search for alien life by scientists, UFO club members are somewhat ambivalent at the prospect of a breakthrough. "Scientists always need evidence, but we don't need evidence," said Tsui dismissively. "We already believe what we believe." - chinadaily

Historian says piece of papyrus refers to Jesus' wife

A historian of early Christianity at Harvard Divinity School has identified a scrap of papyrus that she says was written in Coptic in the fourth century and contains a phrase never seen in any piece of scripture: "Jesus said to them, 'My wife …'"

The faded papyrus fragment is smaller than a business card, with eight lines on one side, in black ink legible under a magnifying glass. Just below the line about Jesus having a wife, the papyrus includes a second provocative clause that purportedly says, “she will be able to be my disciple.”

The finding is being made public in Rome on Tuesday at an international meeting of Coptic scholars by the historian Karen L. King, who has published several books about new Gospel discoveries and is the first woman to hold the nation’s oldest endowed chair, the Hollis professor of divinity.

The provenance of the papyrus fragment is a mystery, and its owner has asked to remain anonymous. Until Tuesday, King had shown the fragment to only a small circle of experts in papyrology and Coptic linguistics, who concluded that it is most likely not a forgery. But she and her collaborators say they are eager for more scholars to weigh in and perhaps upend their conclusions.

Even with many questions unsettled, the discovery could reignite the debate over whether Jesus was married, whether Mary Magdalene was his wife and whether he had a female disciple. These debates date to the early centuries of Christianity, scholars say. But they are relevant today, when global Christianity is roiling over the place of women in ministry and the boundaries of marriage.

The discussion is particularly animated in the Roman Catholic Church, where despite calls for change, the Vatican has reiterated the teaching that the priesthood cannot be opened to women and married men because of the model set by Jesus. NASA developing a real warp drive

Oh, warp drive. It's the stuff of pure science fiction, and propels ships in Star Trek to brave new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations. But give NASA a few years, and warp speed may become sci-fact instead of sci-fi.

A team at NASA's Eagleworks research lab is working on "an interferometer test bed that will try to generate and detect a microscopic instance of a little warp bubble."

In layman's terms: They're trying to figure out if they can find a "loophole" in physics to create a warp drive for interstellar travel at speeds much faster than traditional propulsion will allow. So fast, we could potentially make it to Alpha Centauri in under a month.

We're not exactly sure how that averages out in Star Trek warp speeds, but it's a lot quicker than what we have now.

As NASA Engineering Directorate Dr. Harold "Sonny" White explains:

"By harnessing the physics of cosmic inflation, future spaceships crafted to satisfy the laws of these mathematical equations may actually be able to get somewhere unthinkably fast--and without adverse effects. The math would allow you to go to Alpha Centauri in two weeks as measured by clocks here on Earth. So somebody's clock aboard the spacecraft has the same rate of time as somebody in mission control here in Houston might have. There are no tidal forces inside the bubble, no undue issues, and the proper acceleration is zero. When you turn the field on, everybody doesn't go slamming against the bulkhead, which would be a very short and sad trip."
The next big question is energy. Luckily, White and his team is also working on something that could make power generation less of an issue.

Though exotic matter is the ideal fuel source, Gizmodo notes that White's team has determined that the amount potentially needed to power a warp trip is much less than initially assumed:

"Instead of a Jupiter-sized ball of exotic matter, you will only need 500 kilograms to 'send a 10-meter bubble (32.8 feet) at an effective velocity of 10c.'"

In case you're wondering, 10c is 10-times the speed of light. Now that's fast. - blastr
