The Maryland Goatman Legend

The Maryland Goatman is described as a hybrid creature; part man and part goat. According to those who claim to have seen it, the legs and feet resemble that of a goat, the upper body of a man with a horned head, and a body partially covered by fur. A height is generally described at 7-8 feet and a weight at 300-350 pounds. Below are a few of the documented sightings:

June 1963 - Huntington, MD - A young couple were waling on Zug Road when they observed a peculiar creature staring at them from the edge of the woods. The woman described it as a "tall, ragged animal with human-like features."

April 1971 - Huntington, MD - A farmer near Fletchertown Road reported seeing a large, man-like creature eating the remains of a pig. When the farmer approached the scene, the creature ran off.

September 1976 - Woodmore, MD - A landscaper at the Woodmore Country Club finds unidentified remains on the golf course, near Lottsford Road. While attempting to dispose of them, he hears a low growl. As he looks up, and observes a large, unknown animal.

October 1985 - Glenn Dale, MD - Police respond to a report of teenagers making noise at the old Glenn Dale Hospital site. While investigating, the officer hears unknown sounds, but is unable to locate the source.

August 1990 - Hyattsville, MD - During a birthday party at McGruder Park, a boy runs into the woods after a ball. Moments later, he screams. When adults arrive, they find him visibly shaken. The boy tells his mother, “It was the dark thing with the red eyes who stands in the corner of my room at night.”

May 1998 - Bowie, MD - A group of teenagers are hanging out near a local bridge when they notice something moving in the weeds nearby. Two of the teens go to investigate and describe seeing a tall, human-like animal running into the forest.

July 2007 - Glenarden, MD - A camera crew for WRC-TV (Washington, DC) is on location to cover a local golf tournament when they notice a strange animal moving in the trees nearby. The cameraman manages to capture a few seconds of video before the animal disappears.

It is often associated with a number of locations throughout Prince George’s County, MD (listed above) including Glenn Dale Hospital, the former site of a state tuberculosis sanatorium. It is reported to have attacked and possibly killed a number of witnesses. It had also been connected to damaged property and the deaths of several family pets.

The Piscataway native people believed a magical creature in the same area in Maryland had the ability to shape-shift into various animals forms. This was noted and written in 1666 by a Jesuit priest, in which the illustration of a Bigfoot-like creature standing on two legs appeared in the document.

The sightings began in 1957 when a young couple were parked alone a lonely country road (Zug Road) when they suddenly heard something banging on the hood of their car. Looking up they were startled to see a goat-like humanoid staring at them, waving what looked like a axe. The creature instantly turned and dashed into the surrounding woods. There were several more rumored sightings over years.

Then in the Summer of 1962, the Goatman was accused of killing fourteen people, including twelve children and two accompanying adults, who had been hiking too close to its apparent lair. The survivors, who, not surprisingly, remained anonymous, claimed that the Goatman violently hacked it’s victims with an axe, while uttering horrid screams. According to the account, when the local authorities arrived on the scene all that was left in the carnage were half-eaten limbs and a bloody trail leading to an ominous looking cave. BTW, the Prince Georges County and Maryland State Police have no written record of this incident. It was obviously a ruse and urban legend.

Then in 1970 a woman heard her pet dog barking wildly outside, peering through a window she saw the shadowy figure of the creature moving about where the dog was tied up. Being too afraid to go outside in the dark she decided to remain in the house. The next morning she discovered that the dog had been decapitated.

In the November 10, 1971 edition of the Prince George’s County News the headline on the front page declared “Residents Fear Goatman Lives: Dog Found Decapitated in Old Bowie” with a photo of the remains of the mutilated pet. The canine belonged to April Edwards and had disappeared after she and friends had reported hearing strange noises in their yard on the night of November 3, 1971. When they went to investigate they saw a large creature moving in the dark. The article also stated that reports of an “animal-like creature that walks on its hind legs” had been seen by other residents in the area.

The Prince George’s County News coverage of the Goatman ended with one last front-page story on November 24, 1971. It focused on Mrs. Evelyn Johnson, who lived on Fletchertown Road, and mentioned the trouble and harassment she and other neighbors received from Goatman hunters. This included an incident where the road was blocked off by two cars and one truckload of people who claimed they had the creature trapped. Mrs. Johnson had to call the police in order to drive home.

So what are the actual origins of the Maryland Goatman? Some reports involve escaped mental patients and others satanic rituals...but the most popular legend is that the Goatman is the unfortunate result of an experiment involving one Dr. Stephen Fletcher that went horribly wrong at his U.S. Department of Agriculture laboratory in Beltsville. The doctor confessed to creating the Goatman by crossing the DNA of a goat and his assistant William Lottsford, but the experiment went terribly awry and the result was the genetic nightmare. It's obviously a manufactured tale, but there are many people who claim that this scenario is valid.

Many of these Goatman sightings and reports closely correlate to Bigfoot sightings that have been reported in the same general area of Maryland for generations, including the numerous property attacks by the Sykesville Monster in the early 1970's. Bigfoot related sightings continue throughout Maryland and the surrounding states. In my opinion, the Goatman is simply an urban legend though, a Bigfoot or any other cryptid hominid with an axe would be a life altering event.

Gifts From The Master Race

I have received a few reader emails recently asking if I had information on Nazi UFOs and technology that the Nazis may have had. Honestly, there has been a lot of material posted online and available on television the last few years...but it seems people are fascinated by the subject and intent on finding any new information. I've been promising to post much of what I had in the archives together with a few other tidbits...besides, it's Friday and things are somewhat slow:

The Vril Society: Nazis, UFOs and Conspiracy

Vril, The Power of the Coming Racealso known as The Coming Race is a novel published in 1870 by Edward Bulwer-Lytton. Edward Bulwer-Lytton was a member of British Royalty who was involved in politics and became the Secretary of State for the Colonies. He was a poet, playwright and novelist who authored many books, the most popular being, The Last Days of Pompeii Most people associated with secret societies and occult lodges never took his work, The Coming Race as mere fiction. but truth veiled in a fictional story. The novel is an early example of science fiction, sometimes cited as the first of this genre. The elements believed as truth was that a superior subterranean master race with the energy-form called Vril, and their claim to rise and conquer the surface race someday, was accurate, to the extent that a few wealthy and influential members who were theosophists accepted the book as truth and began to act upon their beliefs.

The plot of the novel centers on a mining engineer, who accidentally finds his way into a subterranean kingdom occupied by beings (the race of the Vril-ya), who seem to resemble angels. The hero soon discovers that they are descendants of the inhabitants of Atlantis. They have access to an extraordinary force called "Vril" that can be controlled at will. However their spiritually elevated hosts controlled the Vril.

In the novel, uses of Vril amongst the Vril-ya vary from an agent of destruction to a healing substance. According to Zee, the narrator's host, Vril can be changed into the mightiest agency over all types of matter, both animate and inanimate. It can destroy like lightning or replenish life, heal, or cure.

The hero is looked upon as a pet who might have to be put down or at least kept for all time with them. He escapes this subterranean realm with the knowledge that this race intends to someday resurface to take control of the surface dwellers, hence the title The Coming Race.

There is a strong belief that the Vril Society was founded as The All German Society for Metaphysics in to explore the origins of the Aryan race, to seek contact with the "hidden masters" of Ultima Thule, and to practice meditation and other techniques intended to strengthen individual mastery of the divine Vril force itself. It was formed by a group of female psychic mediums led by the Thule Gesellschaft medium Maria Orsitsch (Orsic) of Zagreb.

Members of the Vril Society are said to have included Adolf Hitler, Alfred Rosenberg, Heinrich Himmler, Hermann Göring, and Hitler's personal physician, Dr. Theodor Morell. These were original members of the Thule Society which supposedly joined Vril in 1919. The NSDAP (National Sozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei) was created by Thule in 1920, one year later.

With Hitler in power in 1933, both the Thule and Vril Gesellschafts allegedly received official state backing for continued disc development programs aimed at both spaceflight and possibly a war machine.

A great deal of time and resources were spent ($23B+ US today) on researching or creating a popularly accepted “historical”, “cultural” and “scientific” background so the ideas about a “superior” Aryan race could prosper in the German society of the time.

Expeditions in Tibet, Nepal, Greece, the Arctic, and Neuschwabenland in Antarctica were organized in the search for the mythical “Aryan” nation of Hyperborea, whose capital, Ultima Thule was supposedly built by the extraterrestrial ancestors of the “Aryan races” who came from the star Aldebaran, according to some of the “Aryan” theories.

A German expedition to Tibet was organized in order to search for the origins of the Aryan race. To this end, the expedition leader, Ernst Schäfer, had his anthropologist Bruno Beger make face masks and skull and nose measurements.

Similar expeditions were organized in the pursuit of semi-mythical objects believed to bring power or granting special powers to their owner, such as the Holy Grail and the Spear of Destiny.

It has been speculated by many esoteric Hitlerists and conspiracy theorists that study Nazi mysticism and the events that unfolded in World War 2 that the Germans landed on the Moon as early as 1942. Evidence for these claims have been backed up by certain sources, including Vladimir Terziski, the president of the American Academy of Dissident Sciences. This extraordinary theory also plays into the accusations of a conspiracy in the Apollo moon landing hoax, believed to have been orchestrated by the United States government and NASA.

Another theory proposed is the possibility that the Nazis had the capability for spaceflight due to their advanced technology in engineering as well as the exo-atmospheric rocket saucers which are shown in Terziski’s documentation with pictures and designs. It has been suggested that the Nazis had managed to reach the Moon and later the planet Mars, with these rocket-powered saucers.

According to other theories it is believed that the Nazis had made contact with ‘half a dozen’ alien races, including the malevolent reptilians.

It is believed by Vladimir Terziski that there is a lunar atmosphere, as well as water and vegetation on the Moon. According to his claims it is not necessary for a man to wear a space suit to walk on the Moon. This information of course contradicts widely accepted data, such as that supplied by NASA. Terziski promotes his belief that the Germans managed to construct their lunar headquarters by tunneling under the surface of the Moon, and that towards the end of the war they had established a small Nazi research base. According to Terziski, the Germans continue their space effort from their Antarctic colony of Neuschwabenland after the end of the war in May 1945.

NOTE: one needs to ask....what, if any, of this technology ended up in the hands of the United States and/or the Soviets? The Hollow Earth Theory as well as Reptilians and other extraterrestrial races....are they here and how long? Were the Nazis given technology by alien races and to what degree was it used? Did most of these supposed secrets and technology die with the Nazis? Also, was Hitler's 'Third Reich' basically conceived from a science fiction novel? Frankly, my experience with David E. and his alien encounters and accounts sparked my interest in this subject...but there is much more to it. Here are two very good source links The Vril Society, the Luminous Lodge and the Realization of the Great Work and The Nazi UFO Secret...Lon

Czernica: The Fuhrer's Roswell

NOTE: It is my understanding that the following account was a combination of information provided by Polish researcher Robert K Lesniakiewicz, Czech Researcher Milos Jesensky, Russian ufologist Anton Anfalov, Ukrainian psychic and witness Lenura A Azizova, Russian researcher Iryna V Volyk & Russian chemist Sergey V Kovalevskiy...Lon

Czernica, Germany (now territory of Poland) - Summer 1937

"A multicolored ball or globe-shaped UFO was seen to fall in a field (or near a field) belonging to Eva Braun’s parents (this was the future mistress of Adolph Hitler) The area was cordoned off by SS-troops from the town of Jelenia Gora (called Hirschberg at the time)."

"The crashed disk was transported to the Hirschberg SS base and kept under very strong guard and super top security. The disk was 7.6 meter in diameter and 3.8 meters high. It consisted of a large “overwhelming” dome, encircled by a narrow outer rim, and smaller flat dome on the bottom with a flat lower section. The top of the dome was also flat and large. The craft had 6 oval-shaped structures resembling portholes but not transparent, or devices that radiated some type of light, located near the base of the upper dome. On the lower surface of the outer rim the craft had 12 lights. The color of the disk was a dull metal gray. There was an insignia on the dome resembling the letter “T” with 2 props on its sides. The entrance into the disk was found on the top of the upper dome. The general shape of the disk resembled that of a German soldier’s helmet with a small protrusion on the bottom."

"Inside the circular cabin were 3 small seats, there were control panels around the dome and 3 alien beings were found: one was dead, the other two were alive. One of the live aliens died soon after the crash, and the second live alien remained in custody for about 1.5 months and then died. The aliens were small dwarfs, about 0.9-1.0m in height, with large hairless pear-shaped heads, small dystrophic looking bodies, long narrow hands with 4 fingers, grayish skin and large dark slanted eyes."

"The Germans were afraid to move the disk to a more distant location, out of apprehension that it might explode during a long trip during transportation. So, a research laboratory had to be constructed nearby. From Hirschberg the disk was removed to a more secured underground location, which most likely, was called “Der Riese” a Nazi complex in the nearby Gory Sowie mountains (now in southwest Poland), which was also a site being used for excavating for uranium ore. This complex had an extensive network of underground hangars, connected by tunnels. The bodies of the occupants and the living extraterrestrial were also moved into this complex. The alien that lived for a little bit over a month apparently supplied the Germans with some type of information and was desperately asking the Nazi medical doctors for help, but they could not help him because of the different biological structure of his body. The alien died from an unknown illness."

"The origin of the crashed craft was apparently the double star system RA known on earth as 78 mu-1, Cygni, 73.1 light years in distance. Among the information given to the Germans by the surviving alien was that they had built underground bases in the polar region of the Canadian Northern Territories maybe Baffin Island. This data was supplied to Adolph Hitler himself. But no substantial technical data was in fact provided by the alien that could had help Nazi scientists to cope with the alien technology, despite their desperate attempt to obtain such data. The surviving alien also informed the Germans that the crashed was caused by some kind of technical malfunction. The alien was kept and interrogated at the same underground installation as the disk."

"Adolph Hitler and some other top Nazi figures including Werner Von Braun and Air Marshall Hermann Goring inspected the crashed disk, the alien bodies and consulted Nazi scientists in an attempt to use the object as a super secret weapon. Among those scientist involved in investigating the crashed disc were, Max Von Laue, Otto Hahn (who discovered nuclear fusion) and Werner Heisenberg. Fortunately (and unfortunately for the Nazis) the alien technology was extremely sophisticated and difficult to understand. The disc indeed inspired some Nazi scientists to construct different models of disc-shaped planes and the so-called flying bombs."

"This crash and possession of the extraterrestrial spacecraft was one of the factors that possibly inspired Hitler with extreme self-confidence to start World War II, hoping to use the craft as a sort of super weapon that would eventually help him conquer the world. Because of the approaching Soviet troops the whole underground complex was blown up, and the disk and the alien bodies was buried in one of the underground tunnels, the entrance was sealed with numerous huge rocks. It is apparently still there, unbeknownst to the Polish Government. The disk apparently still emanates radiation from its power plant, but because of the nearby uranium mines this source of radiation remains undetected."

Wernher von Braun at Roswell During UFO Crash

by Clark C. McClelland - Former ScO, Space Shuttle Fleet, Kennedy Space Center, FL 1958-1992

In 1947, a controversial event took place in New Mexico near the town of Roswell. The "Roswell Incident," as it has come to be known, remains the paramount case in UFO crash/retrieval history. In addition to the claims of a downed alien ship, alien bodies were said to have been recovered from the debris.

The United States Air Force (USAF) and U.S. Federal Government have kept a steadfast opinion that the object in question was a high altitude balloon project, code named: Mogul. The project was designed to detect nuclear blasts in the USSR. The bodies that were recovered, according to the USAF, were parachute test dummies that had been released high above the desert, and had eventually drifted into the "balloon" crash area. The USAF finally settled on this fabricated version of events and passed it off to the American public as truth.

During my long years of service in our national space program, I was very fortunate to come to know and exchange some very exciting data with former German scientists, who had been brought to the USA under Operation Paper Clip following Word War II. These men were the elite of the German rocket programs controlled by Adolph Hitler. On many occasions I had the distinct privilege of speaking with Dr. Wernher von Braun, the leader of the elite group, and several other scientists who were assigned to the ABMA (Army Ballistics Missile Agency) launch crews at the Cape Canaveral launch sites. Eventually, these same men were incorporated into the new National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) organization. During the periodic MFA (Manned Flight Awareness) meetings that were held at Cocoa Beach, I was able to talk freely and briefly with such scientists, particularly Dr. von Braun.

On one such occasion, he and I had taken a break and stepped out of the Cocoa Beach Ramada Inn into the back patio. I admitted that I was aware that he and his German Scientific team were located not too far from the crash site at that time. They were launching captured V-2 rockets from the White Sands Testing Range. On this night, I asked him a question concerning the Roswell Incident that caused his eyebrows to raise.

Did the Roswell Incident in fact happen, was an alien craft recovered along with alien bodies? Did you have a chance to go to the crash site?"

Dr von Braun was a cigarette smoker and he lit one up. He thought for a second, then proceeded to talk freely about his inspection of the crashed craft.

He trusted me to hear such astonishing events because I vowed to not report it to newspapers, magazines, television, etc. I never broke that vow. Since he is deceased, and the incident happened over fifty years ago, I am now disclosing what I heard. I have a right to speak about anything - even things that, according to certain agencies, "do not exist."

Dr. von Braun explained how he and his (unnamed, for now) associates had been taken to the crash site after most of the military were pulled back. They did a quick analysis of what they found. He told me the craft did not appear to be made of metal as we know metal on earth. He said it seemed to be created from something biological, like skin. I was lost as to what he indicated, other than thinking perhaps the craft was "alive."

The recovered bodies were temporarily being kept in a nearby medical tent. They were small, very frail and had large heads. Their eyes were large. Their skin was greyish and reptilian in texture. Dr. von Braun said it looked similar to the skin texture of rattle snakes he'd seen several times at White Sands. His inspection of the debris had even him puzzled: very thin, aluminium coloured, like silvery chewing gum wrappers. Very light and extremely strong. The interior of the craft was nearly bare of equipment, as if the creatures and craft were part of a single unit.

That's when I became lost in the moment. We returned to the awards ceremony, in which he participated, later bidding farewell. I went home with my head spinning from all I had heard. Keeping this quiet for many years was very difficult, especially with the temptations of having many friends and associates who believe in UFOs, ETs, etc. I never released this amazing data to Major Keyhoe and NICAP, or the public, until now. I considered my honor sacred when a vow was made.

Article author's note: This amazing interview with Dr. von Braun is only one of many events that I personally experienced as a space flight pioneer at Cape Canaveral and the Kennedy Space Center, Florida, from 1958 to 1992.

NOTE: I realize that this has been a theory with many versions...but there are some interesting statements, especially how this incident parallels the Roswell Incident. Did the Roswell account borrow some of the details from the Czernica crash? What technology did the Allies gain after the war? The revelations that von Braun was at Roswell deepens this conspiracy...Lon

The King's Tavern: A Haunted History of Cruelty, Anguish and Sorrow

On Wednesday night, the SyFy Channel's Haunted Collector featured an investigation at the King's Tavern in Natchez, Mississippi. If this location seemed familiar to some of my longtime readers, I had previously received a first-hand account of paranormal activity at the tavern. The following email was forwarded by Robin in 2010 in which she details her experiences at the King's Tavern. I have also included some photos, history and insight...Lon

"The first time that I went there, I got a chill to the bone. Now I am drawn there. I want to be there. I get the same feeling now that I use to get when I lived out of state and would cross the State Line...I feel so at home there. I can't see anything when I take the pictures but once I upload them on my computer, I can see the images. I see images at my home, now in pictures and mirrors. Most people say its my imagination, but I know it is not. I can feel a warm tingling touch on my back throughout the day...this has happened since my first visit to Kings Tavern. I feel like something is wanting the truth to be known. I feel there is a baby that was not known about. I can see images in pictures of a young beautiful girl with long hair. I thought I saw a image of a baby in my mirror. I said GO TO THE LIGHT and the baby disappeared and the face of this beautiful girl appeared smiling at me. The lady at Kings Tavern told me that I get pictures that nobody else has captured. Why am I so drawn there? What are they trying to tell me?"

Thank you,
Robin

The following images were taken by Robin:

Comments from a 'sensitive' who looked at the photos only and was not given the identity or history of the location:

"After looking through the photos and analyzing the face in the window, I get the sense that there is the spirit of a big, nasty-tempered man, with a letter "H". I also get the feeling of being closed in, when I looked at the fireplace. It seems like faces and hands pushing through the walls. Several people were murdered there? I sensed violence, hatred.

I don't get that picture with the woman with the blacked out face. It's like a void.

I don't think I would want to go there. Is that place publicly active/open for business?"

THE KING'S TAVERN - NATCHEZ, MISSISSIPPI

The King's Tavern was built in the year of 1769 and is the oldest building standing in the town of Natchez. This tavern carries the look of most seventeenth century buildings; built with sun-dried bricks, beams that came from scrapped sailing ships originating from New Orleans and barge boards that came from flat river boats once they made their way down the Mississippi and were dismantled.

In 1789 a man named Richard King, bought the old house and moved his family into it. He named the building, The King's Tavern, and turned it into an inn and tavern.

There is a notorious side to the restaurant, though. In the 1930s, workers were expanding the fireplace and tore out the chimney wall. They found a space behind the wall that contained the skeletal remains of three bodies: two men and one woman. Laying on the floor was a jeweled dagger, which was assumed to have been used in their demise.

The woman is thought to have been Madeline, Richard King's mistress. As the story goes, when his wife found out about the affair, she had Madeline killed and bricked into the fireplace in the main dining room. Who the two male skeletons are is anyone's guess... much of the supernatural mischief today is blamed on Madeline, however.

Workers report hearing a baby crying in the restaurant - specifically, from rooms that were supposedly empty. The story behind the infant's cry goes back to the 1700s when the building was not only an inn, but also the post office and one of the centers of the city's commerce. A young mother was trying to comfort her fussy infant, when a man named Big Harpe - one of the notorious Harpe brothers - walked over from the bar. She thought that he was going to assist her, but instead, he grabbed the baby by its feet and slammed the infant against the wall. As the distraught mother crumpled to the floor to gather the child's lifeless body, Big Harpe strolled back to the bar and ordered another drink.

Upstairs are rooms that travelers along the Natchez Trace used to rent. The staff there at the restaurant told us a couple of stories about the upper floors. The first is about the mirror - we were told to always keep watching it, because sometimes out of the corner of your eye you will see the reflection of someone standing there. Not in the room... just in the mirror!

Many people have claimed to see shadowy apparitions pass through staircases. The sounds of a baby crying have been heard coming from the attic area. Doors here have been witnessed to open and close on their own. Water faucets and lights turn on and off without any help from living hands. Jars have fallen off of shelves for no apparent reason. Water has actually been seen pouring from the ceiling area to the floor below, leaving no sign of a leak in the roof or the floor above. The chairs that are hanging on the wall are said to rock and move of their own accord. And perhaps the most odd report of all; the fire places are said to emit quite a bit of heat when no fire is burning in them!

The another story concerns the bed. Even though no one's used it for many, many years, we were told to run our hand just a few inches above it. Many people report feeling warm spots on it, as if someone had just been lying there. Whether this is legit or just a tavern tale, the upstairs bedroom was a curious place to visit.

The apparition of a man dressed in period clothing has also been seen wandering about the building. This man has also showed up in photographs taken by visitors standing near the fire place where the bodies of the two men were found, therefore, it is believed that he may be the restless spirit of one of these unfortunate men.

Some of the other, more aggressive happenings at the inn include: a sudden tightness or pressure in the neck, shoulders or chests and dishes being thrown at guests and staff members.

THE KING'S TAVERN AND THE NATCHEZ TRACE

The King's Tavern site is located at the end of the historic Natchez Trace Parkway. A stretch of historic road that runs from Natchez all the way to Nashville, Tn. To venture along the Natchez Traceway was to journey into a wilderness of darkness and sometimes death. For 500 miles the passageway twisted through matted forests, boggy swamps and broken valleys where dangerous animals, wilderness and most frightening of all bandits and wild Indians were encountered.

Crude taverns were erected sporadically along the Traceway, where one might find a greasy meal, a soggy cot or a lukewarm bath. Many preferred to rest in the open for fear of being robbed while they slept. Burying their money and belongings in the dirt, sleeping with their guns under their arms and lighting fires to ward off wild animals, hundreds of people died on the Traceway from exposure.

Bad weather and frequent flooding of small creeks and rivers turned into torrents and flooded the trails, turning open passages into soggy bog land. Frequently stalling horses and wagons in the muck.

But the greatest danger on the Traceway walked on two feet. The lonely roadway was a favorite for bandits and thieves. Bands of renegade Indians and Whites alike set up ambush along the Traceway looking to loot and plunder possessions, valuables and horses. Month after month, people disappeared on the Traceway, never to be seen or heard from again. It was not uncommon when a well known individual disappeared, that it was assumed or taken for granted that they had become a victim on the Traceway.

Merriweather Lewis, a well known explorer was only one of thousands who met death by treachery on their travels of the passage. Throughout the years skeletons have washed to the surface from shallow graves or hunting parties have come across nameless corpses rotting on the edges of the bogs.

At the King's Tavern, travelers told tales of ambush and horror on their journeys of the Trace. With drink in hand, new arrivals to the Tavern told stories of outrage and savagery, like stories of The Harpe Brothers, Mason and Murrell. (read Killers of the Natchez Trace)

At the head of the tales was Little Wiley Harpe and his brother Big Macijah Harpe. Notorious murderers and theives, who had little regard for human life and frequently killed for pleasure. Their deeds were so outrageous that even their allies in crime detested them. Originally from North Carolina, the Harpe Brothers were sons of a Tory. Their father was rumored to have sided with the British during the Revolution and was a frequent victim of barn burning and retaliation.

The name Harpe acquired fame all along the Trace from the Tennessee Valley to the Natchez Bluffs. In the 1790's the Harpes also had a reputation as far north as Kentucky and were rumored to have used the Mammoth Caves in Kentucky as a hide out. They traveled with their women in tow, frequently interchanged partners with each other when the mood struck. They joined with bands of Indian outlaws from time to time to burn farms, loot, murder and steal horses. The Harpes took lives for the sheer fun of it, sometimes killing their victims, gutting them and loading the abdomens with rocks in order to sink them in rivers and bogs. They moved from one state to the other, killing and robbing as they went. They not only killed for fun , but took great delight in torture and mutilation of their victims by cutting off fingers, poking out eyes with sticks and gutting their victims. They once tied a naked man to a horse and sent him reeling off a cliff to his death, for the fun of it.

The Harpes also were no strangers to child killings. In my research I read accounts of the Harpes having killed a small child by cutting them into one inch pieces, On one occasion Little W. Harpe, exasperated at the crying of his own child, grabbed the child by the ankles and proceeded to bash the child's head into a tree until it shattered. Little Harpe claimed it was the only murder he ever committed that he actually regretted.

On one occasion The Harpes were staying with friends. They were given a cot next to a mild mannered surveyor who snored to loudly while they slept, so they crushed in his head with a hatchet. Going down to breakfast, they offered to watch a woman's child so that she could get their breakfast made quicker. They quieted the child by slitting its throat in it's crib. When breakfast was served, the poor woman met her fate in the same way, with a butcher knife. After breakfast the Harpes burned the house down. Authorities offered a heavy reward for the pair. A vigilante group overtook Big Harpe, while Little Harpe managed an escape. Wounded and paralyzed Big Harpe was confronted by the husband of the woman and child they had savagely murdered. Big Harpe dieing too slowly for his taste was met with a butcherknife by the husband who slowly and methodically, cut and hacked at Big Harpes neck until he was decapitated. His head then stuck in the fork of a tree as a warning. It is said that the white skull of Big Harpe remained in the tree for many years.

Little Harpe eventually returned to Natchez and joined forces with another criminal by the name of Sam Mason. A Virginian of higher breeding and class, but also a notorious thief and murderer. He was organized and planned his crimes, unlike the spontaneous, hot headed Harpes. He had served in the Continental Army and some claimed he was a descendant of a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Sam Mason was also a frequent patron of the King's Tavern, frequently meeting with his accomplices and discussing his plans over a drink at the Tavern. Cutthroats and criminals of all kinds were patrons of the The King's Tavern, from horse thieves and pick pockets, to slave runners, to murderers and rapist, and con artists. The King's Tavern was known for it's wild and rowdy patrons.

It has been reported that Little Harpe was eventually captured and hung for his crimes on the Traceway.

Just the Facts?: The San Pedro Poltergeist -- July 2012 Hottest Ever! -- Acid Attack Warnings!

If you watched Paranormal Witness on Wednesday night then you may realize that the show featured the 'San Pedro Poltergeist' case. Below is an actual description of the incident:

The San Pedro Poltergeist

'Jackie Hernandez' during the investigation

One of the more infamous haunting investigations was the San Pedro Haunting or the Jackie Hernandez case. Dr. Barry Taff got involved in the case, along with cameraman Barry Conrad, in 1989 when he was asked to look into a house in San Pedro, California that was allegedly being haunted. The owner of the house was Jackie Hernandez, a young woman who also had some emotional problems in the past.

The investigators were told of strange smells, unexplained sounds, moving objects, apparitions, a glowing cloud that tried to suffocate her (and which had appeared in front of other witnesses) and actually witnessed a peculiar, dripping substance dripping from the kitchen cabinets.

The events in the house grew stronger and even followed Jackie from place to place. Taff began to believe that she was creating the phenomena unconsciously because of her emotional problems and what became a strong romantic attachment to Barry Conrad. It seemed that anyone who might be perceived as threat to Jackie’s relationship with Barry ended up on the end of a violent attack by the poltergeist.

However, there are problems with the theory that this was strictly a haunting brought on by living subject. The unexplained lights are certainly odd and so would be the reports of male apparitions from witnesses. Also, as Taff found out later, Jackie’s house continued to be reported as haunted long after she moved out. According to the owners, no subsequent tenants stayed there for longer than 6 months. Could this be merely some residual from Jackie’s presence there or was there really a bonifide malevolent spirit?

Here is another brief version of the investigation:

On the night of August 8, 1989, Barry Conrad along with friend and photographer Jeff Wheatcraft, and Dr. Barry Taff, formerly with UCLA’s parapsychology lab and principal investigator of the now famous “Entity” case, would be witness to some of the most compelling and disturbing paranormal activity. Hernandez had told them stories of flying lamps, oozing blood-like gelatin from the walls, an apparition of a decaying old man, an invisible force that would hold her down as though trying to smother her, as well as a floating disembodied head in her attic. So before they left that evening Conrad suggested that Wheatcraft check out the attic. Not long after crawling through the small hole in the ceiling, Jeff’s camera was ripped from his hands into the darkness of the attic. Expectedly, quite shaken he bolted from the attic. Later he would venture back up into the attic in hopes of retrieving the camera. As he searched the empty attic he found an old dusty grape box, which when opened contained his camera, but strangely no lens. Continuing his search he found the surprisingly undamaged lens behind the trap door to the attic. Jeff decided to see if he could get a couple more shots before leaving. But as he began shooting a foul stench began to permeate the attic and without warning he was shoved by an invisible hand into the rafters. And this wasn’t the worst of the activity.

A month later on September 4th, they would be called back by a frantic Jackie Hernandez. The activity was escalating and getting more violent. Arriving around 1am, Jeff and friend Gary decided they should investigate the attic again. Jeff would pay for it, as he was attacked more brutally than the first encounter. Conrad down below with Hernandez heard a loud moan, it was Jeff. Something had grabbed Jeff by the neck and pulled him into the rafters. Somehow able to pull himself free, Jeff and Gary exited the attic. It was then that they all noticed an old cord wrapped around Jeffs neck. It was then that Gary explained that he actually had to pull Jeff off a nail in the rafter and if he hadn’t been there Jeff might have been strangled to death. But there was a plus to the attack, Gary snapped off a photo at the precise moment of the entity yanking Jeff into the rafters.

Jackie Hernandez would eventually move out of the house after the activity became so dangerous that she felt her children were in danger.

NOTE: I attempted to contact the current occupants of the house....no dice. I can understand their reluctance to comment...Lon

Posters warn girls of acid attacks if seen in jeans

Posters warning of serious consequences like acid attacks if women wore jeans and tops created panic across the city on Tuesday but police refused to react to the threats and had made no arrests throughout the day.

Written in red ink, these posters by a group calling itself Jharkhand Mukti Sangh were seen at Albert Ekka Chowk, outside the office of the registrar and St John School at around 9.30am. They were deliberately penned in red ink to give the impression that they were the handiwork of a rebel group, said police.

"We are not taking the posters seriously as we feel some miscreants are behind them. But we will investigate," said DGP G S Rath, adding to the insecurity created among the city's women.

"The police should immediately look into the matter and take action. If they are not booked, it will be very difficult for us to move around freely," said a girl student of St Xavier's College. She was furious with the group. "They are behaving like the Taliban. Recently a khap panchayat also decreed that girls would be punished for wearing jeans. I don't know why they have started this moral policing," she said on condition her identity be kept secret for fear of reprisal.

The chairperson of the State Women's Commission, Hemlata S Mohan, was shocked. "There is no justification for such posters. We cannot allow the girls to be targeted in this fashion," said Mohan.

The posters also warned of violence against job seekers in Jharkhand who are not domiciles of the state. "Outsiders" planning to buy land in the state have also not been spared, just as companies have been warned about the backlash if they displace people.

The police said "attacks" and warnings to "outsiders" is nothing new. Sometime back, activists of the Adivashi Mulvasi Chhatra Morcha (AMCM), roughed up a high school teacher, Avadh Bihari, who hailed from Samastipur, Bihar.

"I was called by the District Education Officer to join as a 10+2 teacher. AMCM members asked me to leave the state or face violence," said Bihari over phone.

AMCM president, Kamlesh Ram, said no leniency would be shown while dealing with outsiders. "Outsiders cannot enjoy the fruits of the state at the cost of the tribals." He added that the tribals had fought for their rights and a separate state. Now that they have it, they should be the first claimants over its resources.

Senior BJP leader, Raghubar Das, said the Constitution grants Indians the right to live anywhere they want. "Any attempt to challenge this right is condemnable. The police should immediately launch a probe. It might be the handiwork of some antisocial elements," said Das.

Rashtriya Janata Dal state president, Girinath Singh, did not turn down the possibility of the involvement of some splinter group. "I want immediate action. The government's failure has caused the people to stand up in protest. It is in fact a fallout of the domicile policy," remarked Singh.

The efficacy of the intelligence system was also questioned. "It shows that the intelligence system has failed," said Singh. - timesofindia

Seven Cameroon Olympic Athletes 'Disappear'

UPDATE: Cameroon Olympics officials have announced that the seven competitors who have disappeared from the athletes village may be seeking asylum in the UK. The Associated Press reported Wednesday that the seven Cameroonian athletes "may be seeking new homes and sporting opportunities outside their African nation."

Seven athletes from the Cameroon Olympic team have allegedly "disappeared," officials say.

The athletes -- five boxers, a swimmer and a soccer player -- are suspected of having absconded so as to be able to "stay in Europe for economic reasons," Reuters news agency reports.

"What began as rumor has finally turned out to be true. Seven Cameroonian athletes who participated at the 2012 London Olympic Games have disappeared from the Olympic Village," Team Cameroon mission head David Ojong said in a message sent to the Cameroonian sports ministry.

According to the BBC, Drusille Ngako, a reserve goalkeeper for the women's soccer team, was the first to abscond. A few days later, swimmer Paul Ekane Edingue had similarly vanished.

Then on Sunday, five Cameroonian boxers who had been eliminated from the games allegedly disappeared from the Olympic village.

International Olympic Committee officials said on Tuesday that they were unaware the athletes had gone missing, Reuters reports.

A spokesperson at the Cameroon embassy in Washington told The Huffington Post that though they had heard about the disappearances, they were unable to confirm the details.

This would not be the first time that athletes have flown the coop during international sports competitions.

Several Cameroonian athletes have "quit their delegation without official consent" in the past, Reuters notes. Last year, for example, two 16-year-old athletes from Cameroon allegedly disappeared after competing in the Commonwealth Youth Games on the Isle of Man, according to the Guardian.

In 2004, German sports officials were left scratching their heads after the entire Sri Lankan handball team vanished in midst of a friendly tournament, the BBC reports. Officials soon learned that the handball team had not been authorized by the Sri Lankan sports ministry. - THP

July 2012 - hottest month on record (ever!) in the U.S.

The graphic up top, borrowed from NOAA's latest State of the Climate Report, really encapsulates everything there is to know about last month's unprecedented temperatures, but here's the relevant bit from the Administration for those of you itching for hard figures:

The average temperature for the contiguous U.S. during July was 77.6°F, 3.3°F above the 20th century average, marking the warmest July and all-time warmest month on record for the nation in a period of record that dates back to 1895. The previous warmest July for the nation was July 1936, when the average U.S. temperature was 77.4°F.

Last month's temperatures make the January—July 2012 period the hottest first seven months of any year on record for the lower 48. They also make the August 2011—July 2012 period the warmest 12-month period of any 12-months on record for the contiguous U.S., breaking the record that was set just last month.

Visit NOAA for the full report, including this list of how last month's temperatures compared to those of previous years' Julys in each of the lower 48. - io9
