Interviews with survivors of a mine explosion in Dec. 26, 1945, known as the Belva Mine Disaster, appeared in several newspapers in Pineville, Kentucky and elsewhere between 12/1981-1/1982. The interviews revealed that a few of the trapped miner observed a "door" in one of the walls open, and a man dressed like a "lumberjack" emerged from a well-lighted room. After assuring the men that they would be rescued, the strange visitor returned to the room and closed the door. These "lumberjack-like" entities have been described by miners in other parts of the country and in other nations as well. There has been debate whether these are physical or paranormal entities.
A similar incident occurred in a mine near Shipton, Pennsylvania. Of the three victims of this particular mine disaster, only two were rescued. However both described a similar paranormal encounter with strange 'men' who entered the caverns and gave light to the two trapped miners and told them that they would be rescued. They were uncertain whether the entities were humans or supernatural beings however, as much of their collective "hallucination" contained both physical as well as supernatural elements. The bluish "light" which illuminated the room, they said, was real, but other holographic-like visuals that appeared on the walls, when touched by their hands, either disappeared or revealed solid rock behind.
Michael Burke, in his article 'Green Thing Sparks Rumors' in The Valley News Dispatch (New Kensington, Tarentum and Vandergrift, PA., Mar. 5, 1981) described a small creature (about 4 ft. tall), that appeared to be 'half humanoid - half dinosaur' was seen emerging from a sewer tunnel in New Kensington. A group of children chased the infant or young dinosauroid creature, one of them momentarily grabbing it at which point it let out a squealing or screeching sound, and then slipped from his hands and escaped back into the sewer tunnel. This incident took place some miles west of Dixonville, PA., where in 1944 several miners were killed or turned up missing as a result of encounters with 'alien' creatures in one particular mineshaft there.
PENNSYLVANIA, DIXONVILLE - Mine inspector Glenn E. Berger reported in 1944 to his superiors that the Dixonville mine disaster which "killed" 15 men was not the result of a cave-in, but rather an attack by underground creatures capable of manipulating the earth [partial cave-ins], whose domain the miners had apparently penetrated. Most of the dead miners were not injured by falling rocks but showed signs of large claw marks, others were missing, and one survivor spoke of seeing a vicious humanoid creature that was 'not of this world' within an ancient passage that the miners had broke into. The creature somehow created a "cave-in", blocking himself and another inspector [who closed his eyes when he felt the creatures 'hot breath' on his neck] from the main passage until another rescue party began to dig through the collapse, scaring the "creature" away. - Stoney Brakefield - NEWS EXTRA, July 14, 1974
Several years ago two boys entered a small cave in a Pittsburgh suburb that was uncovered by road excavation work, only to find a partially buried thermol-bore (a perfectly round fused polished shaft apparently melted through the rock), partially concealed by dirt, and which they uncover and explore. Their dog ran down the sloping shaft, which was about 4 ft. in diameter, ahead of them until a deep, vibrating sound is heard...at which time the dog came running back out of the shaft, clawing its way over them and in total terror, running back home. The cave was then subsequently covered by further road excavation. There were also rumors of old robber gangs in frontier times who would rob banks and escape to hide away in ancient caverns underground, via an "automatic door" they had discovered in the cliffs. - THE SHAVER MYSTERY Magazine
Near Blue Ridge Summit, PA is the location of the so-called "underground Pentagon" maintained by nearby Ft. Ritchie, MD, and used as a major electronic nerve center for the U.S. military. A massive installation that is also known as "Raven Rock" or "Site R" that was blasted out of greenstone granite 650 feet below. A 260,000 sq. ft. facility sprawling beneath 716 acres composed of five different "buildings" in specially excavated separate caverns, literally forming an underground "pentagon". Also contains fluorescent lights, convenience store, barbershop, medical and dining facilities, an underground reservoir containing millions of gallons of water, a chapel, 35 miles of telephone lines, and six 1,000-watt generators. It is a supercomputing and electronic command post linked with several military communications networks around the globe, and is reportedly connected via tunnel to Camp David several miles to the south near the town of Thurmont. - UFO Magazine, Vol.7, No.6; Richard Sauder (NOTE: the original source noted that Camp David was north of Raven Rock...it is actually south in the Catoctin Mts. Raven Rock has been the subject of speculation since it was built, but I can assure you that the facility does exist and is heavily secured. Deadly force warnings are posted well before you reach the 1st checkpoint...Lon)
The reason I bring up Raven Rock is because of several sightings and sudden 'vanishing' of odd entities in the general area. In light of the government presence, one has to wonder if there is any connection. I have personally investigated witness reports of reptilian and small hominids in nearby locations including Michaux State Park, Gettysburg, Cunningham Falls State Park, Waynesboro, PA Watershed and the South Mountain area.
There have been a number of small incidents and sightings of small strange entities throughout the Appalachian Mountains...from Georgia to Maine. But most seem to be concentrated in coal-bearing areas with deep mines or limestone quarries where caves are revealed. Food for thought...

Just the Facts?: Near Miss Asteroid Returning in 2013 -- Deadly Allergy to Cold -- Bizarre Accidents
Near miss asteroid to return in 2013
An amateur team spotted the unusual asteroid, named 2012 DA14, on February 22.
Its small size and orbit meant that it was observed only after it had flown past Earth at about seven times the distance of the Moon.
However, current predictions indicate that on its next flyby, due on 15 February 2013, it will pass Earth at just 24 000 km – closer than many commercial satellites.
“This is a safe distance, but it is still close enough to make the asteroid visible in normal binoculars,” said Detlef Koschny, responsible for near-earth objects in ESA’s Space Situational Awareness (SSA) office.
The asteroid was discovered by the La Sagra Sky Survey observatory, in the southeast of Spain, near Granada, at an altitude of 1700 m, one of the darkest, least light-polluted locations on the European mainland.
“Considering its path in the morning sky, its rather fast angular motion, the quite faint and fading brightness and its orbit high above the plane of Earth’s orbit, it was a slippery target – and easily could have escaped undetected during this Earth visit,” said Jaime Nomen, one of the discoverers.
“A preliminary orbit calculation shows that 2012 DA14 has a very Earth-like orbit with a period of 366.24 days, just one more day than our terrestrial year, and it ‘jumps’ inside and outside of the path of Earth two times per year.”
While an impact with Earth has been ruled out on the asteroid’s next visit, astronomers will use that close approach for more studies and calculate the Earth and Moon’s gravitational effects on it.
“We will also be keen to see the asteroid’s resulting orbit after the next close approach in order to compute any future risk of impact,” said Koschny.
The La Sagra Sky Survey is operated by the Observatorio Astronomico de Mallorca and has recently joined ESA’s SSA programme. In the future it will provide observations to the asteroid data hub that ESA is developing.
Together with information on space weather and debris, its information will help European scientists and policy-makers understand and assess hazards, particularly if an Earth-threatening asteroid is ever found.
The discovery of 2012 DA14 is particularly significant for the Agency’s SSA office, because it is typical of the estimated half a million undiscovered near-Earth objects up to 30 m across.
“The goal is to be able to spot them at least three weeks before closest approach to Earth.”
“We are developing a system of automated optical telescopes that can detect asteroids just like this one, with the goal of being able spot them at least three weeks before closest approach to Earth,” said Koschny.
To achieve this, ESA specialists supported by European industry are planning a network of 1 m-diameter telescopes with a combined field of view large enough to image the complete sky in one night. - phenomenica
Girl who is allergic to the cold
It's been a long, lonely winter for Abbie Tully.
The 12-year-old, who lives in Bournemouth, has been forced to spend the last five months stuck indoors because a rare allergy to the cold could kill her.
She only developed the condition cold urticaria in November last year but since then she has been unable to go outside even for a few minutes and cannot attend an ordinary school.
Cooped up: Abbie Tully, 12, pictured left with mother and full-time carer Nina, suffers from a condition called cold urticaria. Her allergy to cold temperatures means she has been stuck indoors since November
Whereas others her age are free to play in the snow or paddle in the sea, even the slightest chill could lead to a deadly allergic reaction for Abbie.
Not only does the condition cause an angry, burning rash to develop all over her body when she is exposed to the elements, a sudden change in temperature could send her body into anaphylactic shock.
For this reason, Abbie has to keep a self-administering syringe of adrenalin - called an Epi-pen - with her at all times in case the dangerous reaction takes hold.
Even wrapping up warm in the cold weather has little effect as the condition develops even if only a small portion of skin is exposed to the cold.
Abbie has even had to quit her normal school and attend a special unit for children with long-term illnesses during the colder half of the year.
Mother Nina Tully, 38, said: 'Both of us have spent the last five months cooped up indoors and I’ve spent a small fortune on thermal underwear, hats, gloves, coats and scarves for her.
WHAT IS COLD URTICARIA?
Its name meaning 'cold hives', this condition is so rare that it is not known how many sufferers there are in the UK.
It causes itchy, red rashes to flare up on the skin upon exposure to cold temperatures, whether through contact with air, water or surfaces.
Symptoms appear within just a few minutes and can last up to two hours.
Eruptions may appear on parts of the body or all over, while more severe reactions can cause shortness of breath, abdominal pain and an irregular heartbeat.
In the worst cases, it can bring about a drop in blood pressure, shock, collapse and even death.
Swimming in cold water is the most common cause of reactions and, since reactions could pose a risk of drowning, sufferers are advised to avoid entering the water unsupervised.
Suspected sufferers can diagnose the condition by holding an ice cube to the skin for a few minutes. If a distinct and swollen rash emerges, further tests may be required.
Among the underlying conditions associated with the allergy are chickenpox, viral hepatitis and glandular fever.
Very high doses of anti-histamines, the go-to medication for most allergy sufferers, are sometimes prescribed - but in Abbie's case they have no effect.
'Within minutes of being outside the reaction spreads all over her legs, arms and face, even if it’s not that cold.
'She is desperate for the weather to warm up so she can play outside. Sometimes all she wants to do is go for a ride on her bike but she can’t.
'It’s so hard on her and she is really struggling to make friends because she has been indoors with me for months.'
Mrs Tully, Abbie’s full-time carer, lives in Bournemouth with her husband John, 41, an IT manager.
The family moved to the south coast from chilly Edinburgh last year, but ironically Abbie’s problems only started after the move to the sunnier end of the country.
Mrs Tully said: 'Abbie has always been a sickly child and developed eczema when she was just four months old.
'Blood tests showed that she was allergic to milk and eggs and then at six months old she was diagnosed with asthma.
'She was always in and out of hospital with chest infections and pneumonia and she’s also allergic to dogs, cats, cows, pollen and feathers.
'However, everything was pretty normal until we moved to Bournemouth. After about six months her problems started.'
In April last year, Abbie went for a dip in the sea and emerged covered head to toe with red, itchy hives.
Doctors at first suspected a water allergy, but when the weather turned cold Abbie suddenly erupted in the rash again.
One day in November, while waiting for the school bus, Abbie turned red and the hives spread all over her face and body.
Mrs Tully said: 'She rang me up hysterical and begged me to let her come home. The reaction was awful and she said people were staring at her - she was mortified.
'Up until that point it had not been that cold but that was the first of the cold weather. She’s been at home pretty much ever since.'
A dermatologist at Christchurch Hospital, in Dorset, diagnosed Abbie with cold urticaria, a rare allergy to the cold.
The hives are a histamine reaction in response to cold stimuli, including a drastic drop in temperature, cold air and cold water.
Abbie cannot attend ordinary school because walking in and out of the school buildings - even for just a few minutes - will lead her to have a painful reaction.
Instead she attends a special learning centre for children who have missed long periods of school four days a week and gets a taxi to and from home.
Mrs Tully said: 'We are still learning how to cope. Things like thermal underwear only help while she is outside, but then often leave her too hot when she gets indoors.
'Even standing in the salad aisle at the supermarket can set off her reaction as its slightly colder than the rest of the shop.
'If she fell in some cold water or if the temperature suddenly changed, she could have a very dangerous reaction in which her body would go into shock.
'That’s why she carries her Epi-pen wherever she goes and all her teachers know how to use it in an emergency.
'Since November we’ve been pretty much locked in the house. I was going to take her shopping with a friend the other day but despite the fact the weather is getting milder it was still too cold.
'Instead I took her to her friend’s house and it was the first time she had been able to do that in nearly six months.'
Mrs Tully believes Abbie’s allergy developed following a viral infection but unfortunately there is no cure.
Anti-histamines are sometimes prescribed for sufferers but in Abbie’s case they have little effect.
So few people in the UK suffer from cold urticaria that it is not known how many people have it. - dailymail
Scientists unearth 1,400-year-old skeleton of one of Britain's first Christians
Scientists have discovered the remains of what is thought to be one of Britain's first ever Christians after unearthing an "excessively rare" 1,400 year old Anglo-Saxon burial site in Cambridgeshire.
The amazing grave in Trumpington Meadows contains the skeletal remains of a 16-year-old female Catholic convert lying on an ornamental bed clutching a gold and garnet cross.
It is believed the girl, from the 7th century AD, was a member of nobility, persuaded to join the Christian faith after the Pope dispatched St Augustine to England in 597AD.
St Augustine was a benedictine monk, known as the ‘Apostle to the English’, whose job was to convert Anglo-Saxon pagan kings and their families.
Dr Sam Lewsey, an expert on the period, said: "This is an excessively rare discovery. It is the most amazing find I have ever encountered.
"Christian conversion began at the top and percolated down. To be buried in this elaborate way, with such a valuable artefact, tells us that this girl was probably nobility or even royalty.
"This cross is the kind of material culture that was in circulation at the highest sphere of society." - yahoo

Mother, son survive 'bizarre' crashes
A mother and her son survived two separate head-on crashes within four minutes of each other on the Kapiti Coast.
Annie Price, 65, of Wellington, is in intensive care after a freak accident at Pukerua Bay.
She was driving north through the township in her Suzuki Escudo when a tyre came off a ute and hit her vehicle, causing her to cross the centre line and crash head-on into an oncoming car.
Just four minutes earlier, her son had also been involved in a head-on smash in which his car was written off.
Anthony O'Halloran, 35, had a "freaky, uneasy" feeling when he left his Upper Hutt home about 6am on Tuesday to head over to the coast, deciding at the last minute not to take his 2-year-old son with him.
"He was meant to come with me but my sister said leave him there.
"As I was going over Haywards I had a funny, uneasy feeling about the day and thought it was best he stayed behind," Mr O'Halloran said.
He was planning to help his mother and stepfather with some work in Paraparaumu.
He turned off State Highway 1 at McKays Crossing and was driving around a corner in nearby Emerald Glen Rd at 6.49am when he saw lights coming straight toward him in the dark.
A Nissan Sentra crossed the centre line and crashed into him.
Despite his Toyota stationwagon being written off, he escaped with only minor injuries.
He said emergency services told him "they had never seen anyone walk away from devastation like that".
"My car was like a piano accordion. All I got was a tiny scratch and a bruise".
As police arrived at the scene, his partner rang. "She said my mother had had a head-on crash. I said, `Yes, I have'.
"She said, `Have you had a head-on crash? Your mother has just been in one.'
"It was so bizarre, neither of us have ever had car accidents before. Two head-on crashes, it was unreal."
Mrs Price remains in Wellington Hospital's intensive care unit but is expected to be moved to a ward later this week.
Two other people were taken to hospital to be checked, one of whom had whiplash.
A 19-year-old man in the car that collided with Mr O'Halloran suffered pelvic injuries and was trapped for a while in his vehicle. He was flown to Wellington Hospital because State Highway 1 was blocked by Mrs Price's accident.
Mr O'Halloran was still recovering from the shock yesterday, "very glad" that he and his mother had survived.
"It still hasn't sunk in. It is so bizarre I was really totally unharmed. I am not in any more pain than I would be after a rugby game.
"The scariest thing for me was that my 2-year-old was meant to come with me, then 40 minutes later – bang."
Sergeant Mike George said it was "incredible and bizarre" that both mother and son were involved in head-on crashes, in which neither was at fault, within four minutes of each other.
"It was very, very bizarre. Sometimes reality is stranger than fiction."
For the year ending August 2011, 12,952 people were injured in road crashes, the majority of whom were drivers.
Last year's 284 road deaths in New Zealand were the lowest since 1952. - stuff

Many of the readers of 'Phantoms and Monsters' and listeners of 'Beyond the Edge Radio' can recall my description of my 1981 encounter with a Bigfoot. If not, here are a few links:
Man witness confrontation between Bigfoot and stray dog, near Sykesville, MD
The 'Sykesville Monster'
Over the years, I have attempted to gather more information on my sighting as well as other sightings in the general area. Since my sighting in 1981 there have been two (2) more BFRO 'Class A' reports along the Patapsco River Valley and another four (4) general reports and sightings in the same area from 1972-1979.
I interviewed and got to know several of the witnesses of the 1972-73 flap after my personal encounter in 1981. Many of these witnesses have since passed away. There were other unreported incidents in the general Sykesville and Gaither, MD areas. I personally took statements to eight (8) more sightings / encounters between 1972-1979, including a home invasion on Norris Ave. and utility shed break-in on Oklahoma Ave...both in Sykesville. There were also several chicken pens broke into up and down the South Branch of the Patapsco River including Gaither, MD - Sykesville, MD - Woodstock, MD - Daniels, MD and Ellicott City, MD. Most of the sightings have been within the Patapsco State Park...which has a history of unusual activity throughout the park. I still live within 15 miles of all the locations.
A few years after my Bigfoot encounter I happened upon an older gentleman named Phil who was fishing on Piney Run near Marriotsville, MD. I had been trying out a new fly rod upstream and confronted Phil as he was packing up gear by his car. We started talking about a few odds and ends when he mentioned that skeletal remains of a large 'human' had been found on the Piney Run south bank not far from where we were standing. He said that another fisherman had chanced upon the bones while he wandered off the trail. After the discovery the man simply mentioned to a few other fisherman that there were bones in that direction as he gestured to the area.
Phil said that he and a companion walked over to the other side of the stream to take a look at the remains. He said that some of the bones were obviously missing but there was a skull without a jawbone as well as the vertebrae, a few ribs and long bones of the arms and legs. There was no visible tissue but there were a few small dessicated patches of reddish brown fur scattered around. Phil said that both he and his companion both muttered at the same time "where are the clothes?" Then Phil said "this is too big to be a human."
This was back in the early 1980's so there were no cellphones. Phil's companion walked to the small store by the Patapsco River bridge to call the police. As they waited for the authorities Phil took out his fish tape and measured the upper arm bone (humerus)...he remembered it measure 22 inches. Phil's observations and conclusions were that it was something similar to a large ape or gorilla. He also mentioned that the skull looked very much human but larger.
After the Baltimore County Police and State Police arrived on the scene everyone was advised to leave the area. In fact, Phil said they placed crime scene tape across the road so no one could get within 300 yards of the location. He said he and a few others hung around the general store by the railroad tracks so they could see who was coming and going from the scene. There were unmarked helicopters bringing people on-site as well as several unmarked vehicles. These vehicles were similar to what I had seen after my encounter.
When I had made my report with the BFRO I mentioned the finding of these remains. The investigator stated there was no record of the incident...which is the same story with my encounter. There was never any mention on the local news.
I have been searching for information for 30 years. As a result of the information I did gather from witnesses and residents I assume that there may have been a breeding population of Bigfoot in the Patapsco State Park. The most recent sighting was in 1993 by an 8 year old boy in the Woodstock, MD area...a few miles downriver from Marriotsville. There was a report filed for a sighting in 2001 at the Liberty Reservoir (witnesses thought they saw Bigfoot on frozen lake). Since the area is now heavily zoned for residential dwellings, it's obvious to me that these creature breeding units have moved on to more natural locations.

Just the Facts?: Hog Manure Explosions -- Rendlesham Forest Incident 2012 Conference -- Emails From Beyond
Mysterious Hog Farm Explosions Stump Scientists
A strange new growth has emerged from the manure pits of midwestern hog farms. The results are literally explosive.
Since 2009, six farms have blown up after methane trapped in an unidentified, pit-topping foam caught a spark. In the afflicted region, the foam is found in roughly 1 in 4 hog farms.
There’s nothing farmers can do except be very careful. Researchers aren’t even sure what the foam is.
“This has all started in the last four or five years here. We don’t have any idea where it came from or how it got started,” said agricultural engineer Charles Clanton of the University of Minnesota. “Whatever has happened is new.”
A gelatinous goop that resembles melted brown Nerf, the foam captures gases emitted by bacteria living in manure, which on industrial farms gathers in pits beneath barns that may contain several thousand animals.
The pits are emptied each fall, after which waste builds up again, turning them into something like giant stomachs: dark, oxygen-starved percolators in which bacteria and single-celled organisms metabolize the muck.
Methane is a natural byproduct, and is typically dispersed by fans before it reaches explosive levels. But inside the foam’s bubbles, methane reaches levels of 60 to 70 percent, or more than four times what’s considered dangerous. The foam can reach depths of more than four feet.
Disturb the bubbles, and enormous quantities of methane are released in a very short time. Add a spark — from, say, a bit of routine metal repair, as happened in a September 2011 accident that killed 1,500 hogs and injured a worker — and the barn will blow.
If it’s easy to see what the foam causes, however, it’s much more difficult to understand what causes the foam.
Among the possibilities are new bacterial communities that cause foam to form, or a change to the molecular structure of hog waste — a new foodstock, for example, or a pit-cleaning soap that makes the waste more frothy.
Or it could be both factors, or neither. Scientists have so far been stumped by the foam’s patterns.
It can appear in one barn but not another on a farm where every barn is operated identically. Once the foam’s established, it keeps coming back, regardless of efforts at cleaning and decontamination.
But though it’s now common in southern Minnesota and northern Iowa, and in adjacent parts of northwestern Illinois and southwestern Wisconsin, the foam doesn’t seem to be spreading outside that area.
A possible clue comes from historical experiences at wastewater treatment plants, where similar-looking foams have been caused by bacteria, though the identified species can’t always survive in low-oxygen environments like manure pits.
If microbes are to blame, the next question would be: Why now? Deep-pit manure collection on high-density hog farms has been around for decades. Some recent and specific change would need to be responsible for altering the communities of microbes inside them.
“I don’t think it’s a dangerous new microbe,” said Angela Kent, a microbial ecologist at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. “I think it’s a shift in the environment that’s favoring a particular microbial assemblage that’s inadvertently causing this.”
One possibility is a dramatic rise in the agricultural use of so-called distiller’s grain, a byproduct of alcohol and ethanol production: Between 2001 and 2003, the amount of distiller’s grain in hog food quadrupled in the United States. Some evidence suggests a link to foaming, though it’s still tentative.
Changes in water use, antibiotic distribution and even corn genetics have also been suggested as hypothetically plausible culprits, but hypothetical is the operative term.
Kent is current comparing microbial differences between foam and foam-free manure pits, and hopes that a new round of carefully controlled studies on farms using pigs with identical characteristics and diets will give new insight into this unlikely scientific frontier.
“I don’t think anyone’s very familiar with what microbes are present in a manure pit on a hog farm,” she said. - wired
NOTE: anyone who has lived / worked on a farm knows that hog manure is some volatile stuff. I've seen a manure pile on a spreader catch fire from a spark...Lon
Expanding UFO Filmed Over Fort Meyers Beach
A UFO was filmed over Fort Meyers Beach, Florida, which seems to expand and grow as it hovers, dipping in and out among the clouds. What is it?
The unidentified flying object, caught on tape as a hazy sky fades to night, at first doesn't seem remarkable. Other than the fact it's brightly glowing, shows no standard aircraft lights or markings and doesn't seem to make a sound.
But as the video plays out, the UFO seems to grow in size and its lights multiply into four separate quadrants. It definitely doesn't behave like any known aircraft and the people witnessing the event seem to be very puzzled.
Because they are speaking French, it's hard to tell. But shock and awe are detectable in any language, and these people are evidently experiencing it. - Gather - Tom Rose

Emails from the other side
When Jack Froese, 32, died of a heart arrhythmia in June 2011, he left behind a number of grieving friends and family members. But the BBC reports that several mysterious posthumous emails from Froese's account have brought some happiness and closure to those who were closest to him.
Last November, five months after Froese's death, his childhood best friend Tim Hart received an email from Froese's account.
"One night in November, I was sitting on my couch, going through my emails on my phone and it popped up, 'sender: Jack Froese.' I turned ghost white when I read it," Hart told the BBC. "It was very quick and short but to a point that only Jack and I could relate on."
The email had the subject heading, "I'm Watching." While the text of the message itself read, "Did you hear me? I'm at your house. Clean your f***ing attic!!!"
Hart says that shortly before Froese's death, the two had a private conversation in Hart's attic, during which Froese teased him over the attic's messy state. "Just he and I up there. That's it," Hart said.
Froese's cousin Jimmy McGraw also claims to have received a posthumous email from Froese, warning him about an ankle injury that occurred after his cousin's death.
"I'd like to say Jack sent it, just because I look at it as he's gone, but he's still trying to connect with me. Trying to tell me to move along, to feel better," McGraw said.
For now, the source of the emails remains a mystery. But that's OK with Hart, who says that even if the emails are coming from a cruel prankster who has hacked Froese's account, he doesn't mind. "If somebody's joking around, I don't care because I take it whatever way I want," he said.
What's interesting and unique about this case is that the emails all had a personal touch. There have been several reported cases of emails sent from a deceased person's account, but those usually can be easily traced back to spam accounts that have accessed the deceased person's information.
Facebook has had somewhat similar problems for several years, with the social networking site sending automated notifications encouraging users to "reconnect" with the accounts of users who have died. Under normal circumstance, the feature is meant to help connect users who travel in similar social circles. In an 2010 New York Times story, Facebook said it was actively addressing how best to handle accounts belonging to users who have died.
And there are even options for those who would intentionally like to send emails from beyond the grave. The website Dead Man's Switch, lets you write email drafts that will be sent to a group of preselected recipients after your death. The site explains exactly how they're able to know when to send the emails:
"The emails are sent at certain intervals. By default, the switch will email you 30, 45, and 52 days after you last showed signs of life. If you don't respond to any of those emails, all your messages will be sent 60 days after your last check-in."
And if you're simply looking for advice on preparing for your Web-based afterlife, the site Digital Beyond offers ongoing tips about preparing your online identity for after your death. - Yahoo
Human fossils hint at new species
The remains of what may be a previously unknown human species have been identified in southern China.
The bones, which represent at least five individuals, have been dated to between 11,500 and 14,500 years ago.
But scientists are calling them simply the Red Deer Cave people, after one of the sites where they were unearthed.
The team has told the PLoS One journal that far more detailed analysis of the fossils is required before they can be ascribed to a new human lineage.
"We're trying to be very careful at this stage about definitely classifying them," said study co-leader Darren Curnoe from the University of New South Wales, Australia.
"One of the reasons for that is that in the science of human evolution or palaeoanthropology, we presently don't have a generally agreed, biological definition for our own species (Homo sapiens), believe it or not. And so this is a highly contentious area," he told BBC News.
Much of the material has been in Chinese collections for some time but has only recently been subjected to intense investigation.
The remains of some of the individuals come from Maludong (or Red Deer Cave), near the city of Mengzi in Yunnan Province. A further skeleton was discovered at Longlin, in neighbouring Guangxi Province.
The skulls and teeth from the two locations are very similar to each other, suggesting they are from the same population.
But their features are quite distinct from what you might call a fully modern human, says the team. Instead, the Red Deer Cave people have a mix of archaic and modern characteristics.
In general, the individuals had rounded brain cases with prominent brow ridges. Their skull bones were quite thick. Their faces were quite short and flat and tucked under the brain, and they had broad noses.
Their jaws jutted forward but they lacked a modern-human-like chin. Computed Tomography (X-ray) scans of their brain cavities indicate they had modern-looking frontal lobes but quite archaic-looking anterior, or parietal, lobes. They also had large molar teeth.
Dr Curnoe and colleagues put forward two possible scenarios in their PLoS One paper for the origin of the Red Deer Cave population.
One posits that they represent a very early migration of a primitive-looking Homo sapiens that lived separately from other forms in Asia before dying out.
Another possibility contends that they were indeed a distinct Homo species that evolved in Asia and lived alongside our own kind until remarkably recently.
A third scenario being suggested by scientists not connected with the research is that the Red Deer Cave people could be hybrids.
"It's possible these were modern humans who inter-mixed or bred with archaic humans that were around at the time," explained Dr Isabelle De Groote, a palaeoanthropologist from London's Natural History Museum.
"The other option is that they evolved these more primitive features independently because of genetic drift or isolation, or in a response to an environmental pressure such as climate."
Dr Curnoe agreed all this was "certainly possible".
Attempts are being made to extract DNA from the remains. This could yield information about interbreeding, just as genetic studies have on the closely related human species - the Neanderthals and an enigmatic group of people from Siberia known as the Denisovans.
Whatever their true place in the Homo family tree, the Red Deer People are an important find simply because of the dearth of well dated, well described specimens from this part of the world.
And their unearthing all adds to the fascinating and increasingly complex story of human migration and development.
"The Red Deer People were living at what was a really interesting time in China, during what we call the epipalaeolithic or the end of the Stone Age," says Dr Curnoe.
"Not far from Longlin, there are quite well known archaeological sites where some of the very earliest evidence for the epipalaeolithic in East Asia has been found.
"These were occupied by very modern looking people who are already starting to make ceramics - pottery - to store food. And they're already harvesting from the landscape wild rice. There was an economic transition going on from full-blown foraging and gathering towards agriculture."
Quite how the Red Deer People fit into this picture is unclear. The research team is promising to report further investigations into some of the stone tools and cultural artefacts discovered at the dig sites.
The co-leader on the project is Professor Ji Xueping of the Yunnan Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology. - BBC

The Ghost of Herne Bay Pier Makes Another Dramatic Appearance
Click for video
Ghost stories abound around the old Herne Bay Pier near Kent, England, ever since a violent storm isolated the pier head out at sea in 1979. Since then, many reports of a ghostly figure shuffling back and forth have chilled the spine. Now, a new video offers up some real proof to back up the tale.
In the video below, on a suitably misty day, the pier head is filmed from a car parked on shore. Among the shapes outlined against the sky is one in the middle of the pier, indistinguishable from the rest.
Until it starts moving.
As the YouTuber notes, the pier head is cut off from land, with its own navigational light to warn off marine traffic. There is no boat tied up to the sidings, the pier is cordoned off from the public as a hazard and there's no way on or off without help. So who's walking along the pier?
This particular spot has been the subject of numerous ghost sightings for decades. The most compelling evidence has been a recent still photo showing something looking like a person by the boat house. This is the first video to show a figure walking the planks of the destroyed wharf. - Gather - Tom Rose
Strange Quadrangle UFO Spooks Virginia Beach
Click for video
A weird, quadrangle-shaped UFO, of an unusual green color, hovered over Virginia Beach on Tuesday, spooking at least one guy who was just trying to throw out his trash in peace.
Walking outside his home, he noticed dogs barking excitedly and wondered what all the commotion was about as a neighbor mentioned strange noises. Then he looked up in the sky and caught a glimpse of this unusually shaped unidentified flying object hovering over the rooftops in his quiet neighborhood.
Fortunately he was able to grab his camera phone and took about 20 seconds of the footage shown.
This UFO is unique because of its quadrangle shape and colors. It appears to be grayish at the edges and an aquamarine green at its center. It doesn't look very aerodynamic, but it hovers silently before dipping past a rooftop and out of sight. What is it?
Buried Spacecraft? Metallic Object Found in Hole in Austria
An Austrian farmer looking for his lost cat stumbled upon a hole that he thinks might contain the greatest UFO find of all time.
Franz Knoglinger, 47, found the 25-foot-deep, perfectly round hole in northwestern Austrian field while searching for his misplaced kitty Sunday night. He pulled out every investigative trick in the book to learn what was at the bottom.
Throw a rock down the hole? Check.
"I was looking for our family cat Murlimann when I noticed the hole -- I didn't know how deep it was then so I dropped the stone down there, and heard a metallic clunk," he told the Austrian Times.
Big ol' magnet? Check.
"I managed to get a big magnet which I dangled down there and it clearly fastened onto something at the bottom –- so there is something large and metallic about down there," he said. "It also sounds as if there is a hollow space around about whatever the metal object is. It sounds as if there is a room underneath."
He even called a local plumber, who lowered a camera down the pit on a rope -- but the camera failed just as it reached the object. Knoglinger said that the interference may have been caused by "some sort of electrical field."
Regardless, the speculations are already flying -- more than 500 people visited the site within the first day, the Salzburger Nachrichten reported (via Google Translate). Archaeologists told the paper that the hole could have been formed when wooden timber from an underground burial chamber rotted away.
But that doesn't explain the metallic object, which locals think could be a malfunctioned bomb from the war, the "Doorway to Hell" -- as one resident pointed out with a sandwich board -- or even a buried spacecraft, Knoglinger told the Austrian Times.
Geologists are expected to visit the site and perform tests before a possible excavation, the paper reported. - THP
New series of earthquakes rattle Japan
A series of earthquakes rattled Tokyo and northeast Japan late Wednesday evening but caused no apparent damage or injury in the same region hit by last year's devastating tsunami.
The strongest tremor, off Hokkaido island, was 6.8 magnitude and caused tidal changes that prompted some communities to issue evacuation orders or tsunami advisories to residents nearest the coast.
A swelling of 20 centimeters (8 inches) was observed in the port of Hachinohe in Aomori, northern Japan, about one hour after the tremor. Smaller changes were reported in several locations on Hokkaido island and Aomori prefecture.
The Japan Meteorological Agency lifted all tsunami advisories about an hour and half later.
Within about three hours, a magnitude-6.1 quake shook buildings in the capital. It was centered just off the coast of Chiba, east of Tokyo, at a rather shallow 15 kilometers (9 miles) below the sea surface.
Narita International Airport briefly closed runways for inspection but later resumed operation. Several local train services were suspended for safety checks.
There were no abnormalities reported at nuclear power plants after the two earthquakes, operators said. Nearly all of Japan's nuclear plants are offline for safety inspections.
The temblors were considered aftershocks of last year's massive quake, Meteorological Agency official Akira Nagai told a news conference, warning residents to stay away from buildings and plots already loosened by that tremor and the thousands of aftershocks that have followed.
The town of Otsuchi in Iwate prefecture, where more than 800 died in last year's tsunami, issued an evacuation order to coastal households as a precaution after the 6.8 quake, said prefecture disaster management official Shinichi Motoyama. No damage or injury was reported, he said.
Iwate was heavily damaged by last year's earthquake and tsunami. Thousands of aftershocks have shaken the region since then, nearly all of them of minor or moderate strength.
The magnitude 9.0 earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011 left some 19,000 people dead or missing.
Japan marked the first anniversary of the disasters on Sunday, as the country still struggles to rebuild. - csmonitor
South Korean and Russian scientists bid to clone mammoth
The deal was signed by Vasily Vasiliev, vice rector of North-Eastern Federal University of the Sakha Republic, and controversial cloning pioneer Hwang Woo-Suk of South Korea's Sooam Biotech Research Foundation.
Hwang was a national hero until some of his research into creating human stem cells was found in 2006 to have been faked. But his work in creating Snuppy, the world's first cloned dog, in 2005, has been verified by experts.
Stem cell scientists are now setting their sights on the extinct woolly mammoth, after global warming thawed Siberia's permafrost and uncovered remains of the animal.
Sooam said it would launch research this year if the Russian university can ship the remains. The Beijing Genomics Institute will also take part in the project.
The South Korean foundation said it would transfer technology to the Russian university, which has already been involved in joint research with Japanese scientists to bring a mammoth back to life.
"The first and hardest mission is to restore mammoth cells," another Sooam researcher, Hwang In-Sung, told AFP. His colleagues would join Russian scientists in trying to find well-preserved tissue with an undamaged gene.
By replacing the nuclei of egg cells from an elephant with those taken from the mammoth's somatic cells, embryos with mammoth DNA could be produced and planted into elephant wombs for delivery, he said.
Sooam will use an Indian elephant for its somatic cell nucleus transfer. The somatic cells are body cells, such as those of internal organs, skin, bones and blood.
"This will be a really tough job, but we believe it is possible because our institute is good at cloning animals," Hwang In-Sung said.
South Korean experts have previously cloned animals including a cow, a cat, dogs, a pig and a wolf.
Last October Hwang Woo-Suk unveiled eight cloned coyotes in a project sponsored by a provincial government. - telegraph

NAVAJO SKINWALKER CAUGHT ON TAPE
National Geographic’s NAVAJO COPS series has captured the sounds and VIDEO of a mysterious Bigfoot-like creature that the local Navajo call “The Howler.”
NAVAJO COPS’ premier episode showed the reservation’s tribal police force investigating reports of a mysterious sounds from a creature called “The Howler.” Some on the reservation claimed the howling came from a Bigfoot, others said it was a Skinwalker – a malevolent, werewolf-like Navajo spirit made famous in Tony Hillerman’s novels.
In the upcoming NAVAJO COPS episode called “Eyes of the Howler,” officers pursue reports of the creature deep into the back-country, where a SWAT team encounters the disturbing howls (caught on audio) and track the noise to a cave – where video reveals a disturbing set of red-rimmed eyes…
The Navajo Nation police department makes it a policy to investigate supernatural encounters… though “Eyes of the Howler” episode has the best video and audio evidence of the mysterious being.
As most of you know, I have been reporting strange incidents and sightings in the Four Corners area and the Diné Navajo Rez for a few years thanks to the investigations of Jc Johnson at Crypto Four Corners. Jc Johnson will again be joining Eric and myself on Beyond the Edge Radio in April.

CAM RANH BAY, Viet-nam - With binoculars and sonar, people probe Loch Ness for its monster, expeditions search the Himalayas for the abominable snowman, and the guards at the depot here keep a watch for Powell's Ape.
It has been nearly three years since the monster was almost seen by a bleary-eyed guard. Detecting movement on the perimeter, the guard fired and the beast fled. When morning came the area was examined and a footprint and trail of blood were found.
The footprint was neither human nor ape. A picture was taken of the track but no one could decide who or what had made it. It wasn't long before Capt. Powell, then a depot company commander, found his name associated with the monster.
All that remains now is a small photograph on the ammunition area's orderly room wall. Perhaps the legend of Powell's Ape is all there ever was, but the guards at the ammunition area here still have something to think about besides Charlie. - 'Army Reporter,' 27 Apr. 1970
We're all familiar with stories of Bigfoot and Sasquatch sightings and even the tales of the Yeti of the snow-covered mountains of Tibet. Now it's time to introduce you to the Vietnamese version of Bigfoot.
They were taking a breather. The six-man patrol from the 101st Airborne Division's LRRPs was set up in a protective wagon-wheel position--heads facing outward, feet pointed toward the center --as secure a formation as the terrain would allow. And it wasn't allowing much.
The behind-the-lines patrol had taken them into a remote and difficult stretch of mountainous jungle in the Central Highlands. The terrain was rugged and steep, and at night, the LRRPs had to wedge themselves between trees to keep from slipping or sliding downhill.
Wiping the sweat from their eyes and leaning against their heavy rucksacks, the tired LRRPs tended to loosen straps or realign equipment as they rested--all the while watching and listening to the jungle around them.
On quiet guard, the six soldiers were facing out against the wall of green-and-brown underbrush, guarding against any Viet Cong who might have tracked them or who might happen upon them by chance.
The combined weight of their rucksacks, weapons, and LBE--the load-bearing equipment harness that held their web gear--was one hundred pounds or so, and climbing the steep hills with that kind of load took some doing. So the break was a momentary but necessary respite.
Gary Linderer was thinking that the surrounding jungle was quiet and deceptively peaceful. The forest noises--the occasional rustling of the wind through the trees, the grunts of an animal in the distance, and the sound of birds--could easily lull a soldier into a false sense of serenity even though the war was very much around them. However, if anything was out of the ordinary, there was no indication. That is, until the small trees and underbrush just fifteen yards uphill began to shake violently.
Linderer's attention and the frenzied focus of the other team members turned to the commotion. On guard, the LRRPs brought up their weapons and waited. Linderer was the closest team member to the hubbub, his heart was jumping in his chest as he watched and waited for the intruder.
While he was ready for a VC soldier, he wasn't ready for the face that peered through the underbrush. If it was a Viet Cong soldier, then it was a damn ugly one! An oblong head framed the hair-covered face. Dark, deep-set eyes lay beneath a prominent brow, and they did nothing to complement the heavy jowls and angry mouth. As it stepped into a small clearing, Linderer could see that matted reddish-brown hair ran down the creature's neck and covered most of its body. Whatever it was, it stood at least five feet tall, had broad shoulders, long thick muscular arms, and a heavy torso. It walked upright. In the small clearing, it stopped and studied the Americans.
"What the hell is that?" someone called out from behind Linderer.
"It's a rock ape," said another team member. Another team member disagreed. "No, it ain't," he said. "I've seen rock apes, and that sure as hell isn't a rock ape!" "It's an orangutan, isn't it?" Linderer asked while the others kept their eyes glued on the strange creature. "Well, if it is, then he can't read a map. There are no orangutans in Vietnam."
The apelike creature soon lost interest in the six LRRPs, turned back the way it had come, and easily climbed back up the steep rise. "It's an ape of some kind," one of the LRRPs said. "It has to be." But then, maybe it wasn't.
In the Central Highlands region of Vietnam in the remote province of Kontum where the country bumps up against Cambodia and Laos, there is mounting evidence of the existence of strange, humanlike creatures the locals call the nguoi rung --"The people of the forest." Bigfoot.
While the montagnards and other tribal peoples have believed that the nonhuman species have inhabited the region for centuries, scientists now say there may be something more to the folktale and legend.
Toward the end of the American war in Vietnam, numerous sightings by Viet Cong and NVA soldiers of apelike creatures walking upright became so overwhelming that the North Vietnamese party secretariat ordered scientists into the region to investigate the nguoi rung while the war was still going on.
In 1974, as the North Vietnamese Army and the Viet Cong pushed south to overrun the country, Professor Vo Quy of the Vietnam National University was sent into the region to conduct an investigation.
Vo Quy discovered a nguoi rung footprint on the forest floor and made a cast of the impression, which was analyzed and studied by Vietnamese academics. It was wider than a human footprint and too big for an ape. The unusual find added credence to the folktale. It also set off debate in the scientific arena. Other expeditions were mounted but yielded few results. Chance sightings of the nguoi rung continued, ranging from small creatures to larger ones. Eyewitnesses had differences of opinion as to the exact color of the creatures' body hair. Like those sighted earlier, these latest nguoi rung walked upright and were described as having human characteristics.
In 1982, Professor Tran Hong Viet became the second scientist to discover nguoi rung footprints, and while scientists debated the actual existence of such creatures, many of the critics' arguments went up in smoke when zoologist John MacKinnon and a team of scientists discovered three previously unknown mammals in the Vu Quang Mountain rain forest in 1992.
The discovery of the new mammals demonstrated that the remote regions might well hold other new discoveries, including clues that might solve the riddle of Vietnam's Bigfoot.
Ironically, it was MacKinnon who, in 1969, came across manlike footprints in the jungles of Borneo, ascribed by locals to the Batutut. MacKinnon wrote that "the toes of the creature looked quite human...' and that the tracks would have been about the right size for the Asiatic black bear. However, the only bear known in Borneo is the sun bear, which is considerably smaller.
To this day, the controversy continues even as international teams of scientists scour the remote mountain jungles looking for what the local villagers say have always been there. - Excerpt from "Strange but True Stories of the Vietnam War -
Kregg P. J. Jorgenson
"We slowly regrouped and made sure no one was wounded and discussed what we thought we had seen. As it was getting dark and there were hostiles in the area, we decided to get back to the hill. That night we heard several howls sounding very similar to the ones that you have recorded, coming from all over the place. Some sounded like they were just outside of the hooch and others sounded more than a mile away. There were all kinds of sounds from whines to growls to sounds that sounded like barks. Needless to say no one slept very well that night."
"The next morning, all of us that were on that patrol, decided to try to track this thing. It took a lot of talking to get Tops to let us go looking for it, but after hearing the same story from the whole squad he decided to let us have a chance to bring it back. We returned to the area and found a blood trail, leading into the jungle. We trailed it for quite some time when we found the body of an enemy soldier that had been almost entirely torn apart. We do not know exactly what happened, but I have a good notion to what may have happened. We basically ran out of the area back to our hill."
"The rest of the time we were in Vietnam, I never heard the sounds or saw anything like it again. The talk of what we had seen spread very quickly, and some of the locals called it a name that I can neither pronounce or remember, but the translation if I recall was 'Stench Monkey' or 'Foul Monkey', something like that. I can’t remember for sure. What I do know is that it bothered me so much that I transferred from there, to a job on a helicopter so that I wouldn’t have to be in the jungle anymore."
"After returning home to Alabama when my tour had ended, I occasionally heard sounds that reminded me so much of that encounter. It had been years since I left Alabama and moved to west central Illinois. I seldom thought of that day in Vietnam or the things I heard and saw. The recording is exactly what I had heard over there, I could close my eyes and still hear the howl in Vietnam. Regrettably I have mixed feelings about discovering your website, relieved that someone else may now know what I went through, frightened that I that there may be something in the area of where I now live."
"I realize that you are interested in pursuing this creature or one like it, but let me warn you from someone who has seen what it is capable of first hand. Don’t." - stancourtney.com
"While at an army military police school, my brother in-law, Craig Miles of Boise, Idaho, met a Vietnam veteran that recalled a low altitude Special Forces drop in the interior during 1967-68. It was the middle of the night; there were no villages for 15 miles."
"For a period of three nights they heard choking and gurgling noises. On the fourth day they found the upper half of a decomposing bigfoot-like creature. It had been blown in half by something......not them. This was apparently not the noise they had heard ...a mate possibly? This was the speculation that was circulating."
"They could see into the body cavity...spine, lungs, and such. All was crawling with bugs. There was shorter hair on the huge head. The eyes sunk back an inch and a half from the brow line. It had long arms. Very large and long fingers. One hand was still wrapped around a branch."
"He didn't say what color it was, but did mention that it had a flat nose. If the creature had it's legs, the estimated height was around 8 ft tall...there was no sign of the lower half of the body. They were able to see the teeth. All flat, well formed molars, except the canines, which were longer and pointed. Seemed adapted to living in the forest with long arms and fingers, or perhaps just builds night nests like gorillas sometimes do." - Steve Williams
"The matter of wild people or feral humans seems to be a reoccuring phenomenon in southeast Asia. Once while in the Marines I showed a Vietnamese colleague a reference in Mark Hall's hominid book to a term used for wildmen in Vietnam. He was surprised to see the word in print and explained that growing up in his village a wild man and woman were once captured from the jungle after they'd been stealing food (chickens, I think it was). Either they were killed or kept in cage prisons; something unfortunate in either case. They were people, he explained, and not something ape-like by any means. But they were very dirty and had long ragged hair and I think he said they couldn't talk. He seemed to suggest that while this was a rare occurence such incidents would be heard of from time to time." - Nick Sucik - Homin Investigator
"We ran into them frequently and I have a friend whose Recon position on Dong Den was overrun one night by hundreds of them. They made a noise that sounded just like a dog barking. In fact, you'd swear it was a dog."
"One time on a ridge of Nui Mo Tau, about 15 km S of Hue, about eight of them came walking up a trail and surprised a squad of our platoon while it was stopped for lunch. All hell broke loose because they looked very much like NVA soldiers in khaki (same height, size and color) as they came around a bend in the trail about 10 meters from the unsuspecting GI's."
"I was with the other two squads of the platoon eating our lunch on the far side of a clearing about 50 meters wide that separated the two elements. The trails wound up the ridge and then through the clearing."
"All of a sudden and without any warning, the lone squad opened up with every thing they had...M-16's, M-79's and hand grenades. I grabbed about 300 rounds of gun ammo and my M-60, then ran across the clearing with the platoon Sgt. (everyone else stayed home!) to the cover of a huge, toppled tree that was lying on the far side and close to the point of contact. The Sgt. and I looked at one another, nodded and then came up over the top ready to blast away but what we saw instead blew us away!"
"The firing had been non-stop and we fully expected to engage a sizeable enemy force, but instead, we found ourselves looking at our men, some seated, some standing, some kneeling, and firing at these ghostly images swooshing around in brush and trees (some off the ground by that point) in all directions. All except one was light brown to reddish brown in color, and about 5 1/2 four feet
tall. One dark, almost black, male remained fighting to protect the others retreat and he was flying through the branches and rushing the men with his teeth bared. He was one very brave animal, I'll tell you that."
"Then, as if someone had snapped their fingers, they all just seemed to disappear. Zip, the male turned and flashed into the trees and was out of site in a second."
"This may sound very strange to you, but although I had no or little concern about killing the enemy, the killing of innocent animals turned my stomach and could enrage me if done without being a necessity. But I searched the site and but found not a drop of blood, which totally amazed me given the amount of firing that had gone on. I wonder to this day if the men were shooting just to scare the Rock Apes away or whether they were really just poor marksman!"
"The men who'd suffered the surprise looked a bit worse for wear, and I'm sure a few had to wash their shorts out as a result of the unwelcome visit. It really scared the crap out of them, I kid you not!"
"We, on the other hand, did suffer one casualty. A trooper had an eardrum blown out by the muzzle blast of the first shot fired because the trooper who first saw the apes just picked up his M-16 and fired without saying a word, and the muzzle was right next to this poor fellow's ear when he did."
"Apart from that, I have all the same questions your student does and would love to hear just exactly what sort of apes they were?" - Michael Kelley - D Co 1st/502d Infantry, 101st Airborne Div 69/70
Lt. Alan Szpila of Cumberland. R. I., spotted footprints while piloting a 101st Airborne Division helicopter. 'I have been looking at footprints from the air for quite a while now and I noticed the exceptional size (of these) immediately. I landed to get a closer look and sure enough. these tracks were about 18 inches long and eight inches wide.' Someone suggested that they were made by Ho Chi Minh sandals. which are made of car tires. 'They were embedded deeply, indicating a heavy wearer. The stride of whatever made them was about four feet,' he said. Warrant Officer Darryl Santella of Long Beach, Calif., saw the footprints at the same time as Szpila and estimated that, if made by a man, he must have been about eight feet tall." - Dr. Bernard Heuvelmans - On the Track of Unknown Animals

Western US will face a tsunami eventually
No one wants to believe that the March 11, 2011, Japan earthquake and tsunami could happen again. But it will. Somewhere.
One likely place for a repeat performance is the west coast of North America. The question is when.
Geophysicists from seven research institutions across the country are probing that question like never before, through a five-year, $4.6-million project just getting underway. Combining 1,000-times-faster computing speeds with improved methodologies, the team is creating the first unified simulation of earthquakes all along western North America.
“One of the project goals is to improve our short- and long-term earthquake forecasting capabilities,” project leader James Dieterich of the University of California, Riverside, said in a press release. “More accurate forecasting has practical advantages—earthquake insurance, for example, relies heavily on forecasts."
The new simulation will help scientists determine the interplay between the two very different fault systems that exist along the U.S. West Coast. Californians have known to expect great lurches along the San Andreas Fault and its counterparts ever since the Great San Francisco Earthquake of 1906. But inhabitants of the U.S. Pacific Northwest face a double threat: Lurking offshore is a 600-mile-long gash in the seafloor, the Cascadia Subduction Zone, that is prone to mega-thrust earthquakes and tsunamis on the order of last year’s 9.0 tsunami-generating temblor in Japan. The last great Cascadia quake occurred in 1700, uncomfortably long ago when you consider that such events occur every 300 to 500 years.
“Observations of earthquakes go back to only about 100 years, resulting in a relatively short record,” Dieiterich said. “If we get the physics right, our simulations of plate boundary fault systems—at one-kilometer resolution for California—will span more than 10,000 years of plate motion and consist of up to a million discrete earthquake events, giving us abundant data to analyze.”
From all that new data, Dieterich and his colleagues hope to locate clues regarding the long-term processes that condition fault systems to fail in great earthquakes (greater than magnitude 8). One condition the team will be watching closely is the effect of so-called slow-slip events, a special class of subtle plate motion among the hundreds of earthquakes we cannot feel at the earth’s surface.
The existence of slow-slip events, which scientists discovered only recently, is turning out to be especially important for accurate forecasting. In a slow-slip event, movement is gradual enough not to create detectable ground motion, but the energy release can be the equivalent of a normal magnitude 6 earthquake. The big question is whether these events may transfer stress to portions of a subduction zone most prone to a violent jolt, Dieterich explained in a recent talk on the UC Riverside campus.
He pointed out that scientists reviewing the seismic recordings from Japan in early 2011 noted a slow-slip event occurred between the main shock on March 11 and its foreshock.
Likewise, an analysis of the 1960 Chile earthquake revealed that there appeared to be a slow slip even between it and its largest aftershock. And dozens of slow-slip events have been detected in the Cascadia Subduction Zone deep beneath Washington and Oregon.
So does that increase the chances for another great Cascadia quake? That’s exactly what Deiterich and his colleagues at UCR, Brown University, Columbia University, the University of Southern California, San Diego State University, UC San Diego and the US Geological Survey hope to discern.
Their motives are simple: an increasing fraction of the world’s population lives in regions where great earthquakes occur and is exposed to high seismic risk as a result. While preparedness is crucial to dealing with earthquakes, better forecasting of these natural disasters can save more lives. - discovery
Dementia Derived From Eating Squirrel Meat
The Economist notes that in our strange and economically unstable times, many are turning to eating meats from odder, less desirable animals. One tidbit is that mad-cow disease has broken out in Kentucky of late due to consumption of squirrel brains:
The manager of the Budgens supermarket in the London suburb of Crouch End says sales of squirrel meat have soared since he started selling it in 2010. The bushy-tailed tree-dwellers are just one category in a burgeoning market. Osgrow, a British-based firm, exports bison, crocodile (“ideal for barbecues”) and kudu meat to customers in countries where controls on wild meat are tighter.
Wild meat is not always tasty. Black bear is “bloody and a bit metallic”. Nor is it always healthy. Doctors in Kentucky say eating squirrel brains is linked to Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (better known as mad-cow disease). Squirrels are now mainly sold headless.
Poland: Unedited - I am writing in a rather strange case namely, that what happened to me and say about 6 years ago, one afternoon suddenly I felt as if something wanted to kidnap me an incredible feeling in the head as if to draw, as if something wanted to kidnap me pull was so strong that I ran into the bathroom and I grabbed a tap that does not fly away. This event has changed something in me because since then I can move things on hand, the heavier the better, all that I can put it on your hand move, but there was something else the other day when I lit the cigarette there was a smell amazing, so incredibly alien, the smell of cigarette turned into something alien thing, the smell of the word gives you hinted that I was dealing with something strange, and it has now been 6 years until one day when I lit the cigarette smoke again turned into an unearthly smell the same smell as before 6 years ago and since the events began to happen to me and say strange things stopped me to heal skin that is sufficient to burn, and remains the smallest sign of the burns I had not had before, normal skin longer to heal me, then, and it made me curious najbaredziej "future" to me, a force that is this force pushes me to the ground when I want something in practice, eg overhang or pump something pushes me to the ground so that I can not do any exercises that will add strength because I have always liked a lot of practice, moreover, the best proof that this power is , is that once every 1.5 Last month I feel that anything goes with me and then it turns out that for half an hour until I can exercise again the power comes and pushes me to the ground, which is another change for me from that event is that I border around the eyes that are almond shape eyes and quite reminiscent of an alien as to which they are accustomed to see, what's interesting the border at night sometimes they become bright green (at the beginning was now a gray color is changed) once shocked me remember what the border have become very strongly green something like have not seen yet further what is already changed the details but mention that to the bottom of the neck where it meets the body skin got a green color, also in the corner of eye color changed to gold all the changes began to happen from July of last year I felt the smell of smoke in June, I know that smell is nieprawdopodowbie and that the state had certainly with something like this already but I is not lyin 'telling the truth smell the smoke really took place! and these changes plus the strength of that for me there really is pregnant and has something on me, I do not know what's interesting as it is still burning but I do not feel normal tobacco smell only the smell and taste of that smell that I experienced (as in 70%), [email removed/cms/tg] - MUFON CMS
Anyone remember this incident? Received the inquiry today:
This incident happened in a town called Ifon-Osun in Osun State, Nigeria. It happened about 7 years ago.
There was a very big tree in front of the Olufon (the traditional ruler of the town).
The community decided to cut down the tree because they believe it was inhabited by spirit beings whose activities were inimical to the progress of the town.
The tree was cut down, all the branches were lopped off.
The second day, the tree was found in its normal place; but with the branches lopped off alone on the ground.
This made some news at the time and lots of people were coming to look at it.
As a result the muslim community who felt the tree was becoming some sort of idol, cut down the tree in the night, cut it into pieces and set fire to it.
