Just the Facts?: The Hunt For The Mothman -- Cryptids For Kids -- Ropen Sighting In Lakewood, California

The Hunt for the Mothman

While viewing your blog, I noticed you cover many up-to-date and relevant incidents, with archives dating all the way back to 2006. I also noticed you also have a hefty collection of Mothman material, with the most recent incident being reported back in January from a "eye-witness." Your blog features maps, quotes, and maybe a portrait or two of an author or novel relevant to the topic, but nothing actually visual. As you may already know, the Mothman legend originated Point Pleasant, W. Va, which houses firm believers from older generations, along with new generation skeptics. Although the incident which made the legend renown throughout Point Pleasant occurred back in 1967, sightings are still being reported across the country, and Point Pleasant remains its biggest fan. Aside from reading a novel about the legend, or contemplating if what you see on google is real or fake, has the urge ever occurred that you want to actually hear it from someone's mouth for yourself? Well, that urge really struck my colleagues and I, which resulted in us packing up our gear and hitting the road. We hoped to fulfill our desire with our multimedia project, "The Hunt for the Mothman."

This project was created for a multimedia class at West Virginia University which uses video, print, audio, and still photographs to give a sense of how natives of Point Pleasant, young and old, perceive the legend. We thought our production might strike particular interest to Phantoms and Monsters and its community!

Cool...Cryptids For Kids

Hello! My name is Charles Pieper. I am an animator/filmmaker who has had a life long love for Cryptozoology and all things mysterious and as such has been an avid reader of your site.

I am writing you now for I am working on an upcoming animated show that is all about cryptozoological creatures...It is called 'Q.R.V!' and you can check out its trailer here:

https://vimeo.com/44180149

The trailer features the main character, Roderick Templeton, coming across the Flatwoods Monster, a Ningen, the Mothman, and a few Chupacabras!

The tone of the show is humorous though I hope it may become educational as well, in terms of getting new people interested in cryptozoological studies. In no way am I attempting to poke fun at it as it is something I have been fascinated by and read up on my whole life.

Thanks so much for all your wonderful writings and research for sure! Do stay in touch.

Sincerely, Charles Pieper

Deformed deer found in Swedish garden

When Gothenburg resident Ola Enbågen went out to get his paper from his post box, he was gobsmacked to be facing a deer with a cactus-like growth on his head grazing in his garden. “He was looking straight at me and I just thought ‘damn, he looks strange’,” Enbågen said. The deer, which turned out to be suffering from a condition called gnarly cactus, or cactus buck, was startled at Enbågen’s arrival and jumped over the rhododendron shrubbery and disappeared.

“But when I was having breakfast he returned, so I took some pictures and filmed him through the window,” Enbågen said. Gnarly cactus is a condition which causes the animal’s antlers to continue growing until they cover its eyes. Normally, a hormonal impulse stirs the bucks to rub the velvet off its antlers every year, and eventually shed them.

When a hormonal imbalance disturbs the shedding of the animal’s antlers, each growing cycle produces more velvet and antler material on top of the previous year’s until they eventually grow over the deer's eyes, resembling a cactus. An animal with this condition will have very small or completely undescended testicles. “It didn’t have horns as such, more like a big lump or a hat on top of its head. It looked gnarly,” said Enbågen. Animals with this condition are not expected to live for a long time. Once the antlers grow over his eyes, the animal will be unable to fend for itself.

Jonathan Whitcomb reports new ropen sighting in Lakewood, CA

Feeling certain about both eyewitness credibility and about correct identification—that appears more rare than the ropen itself, when I interview eyewitnesses by email, by phone conversation, or in person. But yesterday I read an email from an eyewitness who had seen a flying creature in Lakewood, California, only one day earlier, and our subsequent conversations by phone and in person verified her credibility. Details in her description also verified the high probability that it was an American Ropen (a Rhamphorhynchoid pterosaur).

At mid-day, in the backyard of her home in Lakewood, the lady at first paid little attention to the barking of her nearby dog. She was focused on her computer until she heard a strange noise. She looked up to see a strange winged creature that immediately flew off, startled by the human who had suddenly come out from under the nearby gazebo.

As the creature unfurled its wings, the lady was surprised by the loud noise, like “heavy fabric.” The long-tailed creature flew off to a large tree in a neighbor’s yard, whereupon the lady ran into her house to tell her husband. The two of them then drove around the neighborhood, camera in hand, searching for what the lady later referred to as a ”dragon pteradactal.”

The ropen, with a wingspan estimated at 5-6 feet, was perched over a storm drain in Lakewood, California. - livepterosaur
