A Challenge To You: Ancient Aliens

In 1968, Swiss researcher and author Erich von Däniken published Chariots of the Gods, which became an immediate bestseller. At the time, I was enthralled by the concept that humans may have been influenced by extraterrestrials. In fact, some science teachers were actually quoting from the text as part of their lessons not long after it was published.

In the book, von Däniken put forth his hypothesis that, the technologies and religions of many ancient civilizations were given to them by space travelers who were welcomed as gods. He is regarded by many as the father of the 'ancient alien theory' or 'ancient astronaut theory'. This theory was also popularized by other writers, including Zecharia Sitchin, Robert K. G. Temple, David Icke and Peter Kolosimo. The idea that ancient astronauts actually existed has not been taken seriously by most academics though, there are some indications that recent evidence may start to sway the standard conceptions.

My challenge to my readers is this...what are your thoughts on the ancient alien theory? I would like your comments and interpretations written in an email and forwarded to me at I will also post a poll on the website. The information will be gathered and included in a future post.

You can use some of the following topics as a reference for your submission:

- The Book of Enoch and the Watchers
- Jesus Christ...extraterrestrial?
- Men in Black...alien observers past and present?
- Fast access to modern technology / reverse engineering
- Early depictions of alien-like beings and their craft
- Beliefs and customs / religious dogma
- The Anunnaki
- Ancient structures...Nazca Lines / the Pyramids of Giza / the Moai statues of Easter Island / Maya, Inca and Middle Eastern ruins
- Atlantis / the Bermuda Triangle / Mexico's "Zone of Silence"
- Underground lairs and facilities past and present
- Biblical disasters
- Ancient extraterrestrials? Moses / Joan of Arc / Akhnaton / etc.

These are just a few of the better known topics included in the ancient alien discussions. If you have others please feel free to comment. Thanks for your help...Lon

Just the Facts? Blackbeard's Cannon Retrieved -- Charles and Vlad...Blood Brothers -- New 'End Times' Scenario

Blackbeard's cannon retrieved

A one-ton cannon from the wreck of Blackbeard's pirate ship has been raised from the seabed after nearly 300 years.

The cannon was onboard the Queen Anne's Revenge which ran aground and sank off the coast of North Carolina in 1718.

Blackbeard, whose real name was thought to be Edward Teach, became one of the world's most notorious and feared pirates as he roamed seas around the West Indies and the east coast of the American colonies.

The British pirate's reign of terror only lasted two years before the Royal Navy was sent out to sea to capture him.

He was eventually killed in a battle with Lieutenant Robert Maynard who cut off his head and hung it from the bow of his ship as a warning to other pirates.

When Blackbeard died he took the secret of where his treasure was hidden with him.

The Queen Anne's Revenge was found in 1996 and over 250,000 artifacts have already been recovered from it.

The cannon will be put on public display for one day before it is taken to a laboratory for tests.

After almost three centuries underwater, the cannon has become encrusted in sand, barnacles, salt and shells.

Blackbeard has inspired books and films over the years.

Parallels have been drawn between his character and Captain Jack Sparrow, played by Johnny Depp, in the Pirates of the Caribbean films. - sky

Charles and Vlad...blood brothers

The truth is out: Prince Charles is related to Vlad the Impaler.

The heir to the British throne says he is related to Vlad the Impaler, the cruel 15th-Century Romanian warlord who helped inspire Bram Stoker's 1897 vampire novel "Dracula."

He makes the comments on an upcoming TV show to promote his interest in protecting the forests of Romania's Transylvania region.

Charles says genealogy shows that he is related to Vlad, giving him a stake in the future of Romania. The prince has long worked to conserve the forests and has bought a home in the region.

On a visit to Romania earlier this year, he called Transylvania a national treasure because of its unspoiled landscape and centuries-old rural farming traditions. - THP

A plausible end-of-the-world scenario you’ve probably never thought of

You've seen the world end with fire, earthquakes, and WTF in movies like 2012 and The Core. But to find out about truly horrific, plausible scenarios you need to ask a scientist. We talked to Cal Tech's Joe Kirschvink, a geobiologist who studies the ancient history of life — and mass death. He gave us a nightmare scenario where one evolutionary shift in ocean microbes leaves humans unable to breathe.

Kirshvink is an expert in one of the most dramatic transformations that's ever shaken our planet. You may not realize this, but for almost 2 billion years of the 4.5 billion year history of Earth, our planet's atmosphere was dominated by methane and other greenhouse gases. There was no free oxygen, and therefore no life as we know it could survive. But then, about 2.35 billion years ago, microbes called cyanobacteria — also known as blue-green algae — began to produce free oxygen as a byproduct of the photosynthesis process. The algae did this by breaking apart water molecules during their digestive process, freeing the O (oxygen) from H2O (water).

As a result, these cyanobacteria poisoned the world. At least, that's how it would have seemed to all the microbes around them, known as stromatolites, who breathed methane. Suddenly, all this oxygen was in the air and the stromatolites began to die out. Eventually the oxygen-based atmosphere allowed life as we know it (including humans) to evolve. Over the dead bodies of those methane-breathing stromatolites.

So that's the backstory. The thing is, we really aren't sure what caused the cyanobacteria to start photosynthesizing and throwing off all that free oxygen in the first place. And there's no reason such an evolutionary shift couldn't happen again, with equally disastrous results for all life on Earth.

"Here's my nightmare scenario," Kirschvink began. "And it really is a nightmare. It's chemically unreasonable. But I suppose the microbes living 2.35 billion years ago would have said the same things about oxygen." Warming to the topic, he spun out microbial death tale. "Let's say that there's some damn diatom that learns to grab a photon and take salt," he mused. Instead of grabbing a photon and taking H2O like the cynaobacteria, this microbe takes salt from the ocean waters instead. Salt, if you recall your basic chemistry, is NaCl, or sodium chloride. The diatom breaks this in half, leaving a sodium metal which Kirschvink says it could store in "a little organelle." And instead of releasing free oxygen as a byproduct, this new diatom releases chlorine gas — a deadly poison.

"You have chlorine gas poisoning the atmosphere," Kirschvink concludes. "It would do to us what oxygen did to those juicy stromatolites." Could such a scenario come to pass? "It's just one small change in the metabolic pathways" of the diatom, Kirschvink noted. Of course, there is no known evolutionary advantage to such a shift taking place. But then again, there is no known advantage to cyanobacteria developing a metabolism that farted out oxygen 2.35 billion years ago, either.

Next time you're looking for a doomsday scenario, consider the humble diatom. - io9

Sheepman: The Trestle of Death

The Pope Lick Monster is/was, according to legend, a half-man, half-goat creature that lives under the Norfolk Southern Railroad trestle across Pope Lick Creek and South Pope Lick Rd. near Fisherville in eastern Jefferson County, Kentucky. The stories have been used as a 'dare' that required an unfortunate sap to climb onto the trestle. These individuals were most likely under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Numerous urban legends exist about the creature’s origins and the methods it employs to claim its victims. According to some accounts, the creature uses either hypnosis or voice mimicry to lure trespassers onto the trestle to meet their death before an oncoming train. Other stories claim the monster jumps down from the trestle onto the roofs of cars passing beneath it. Yet other legends tell that it attacks its victims with a blood-stained axe. It has also been said that the very sight of the creature is so unsettling that those who see it while walking across the high trestle are driven to leap off.

Other legends explain the creature’s origins, including that it is a human goat hybrid, and that it was a circus freak who vowed revenge after being mistreated. In one version, the creature escaped after a train derailed on the trestle. Another version claims that the monster is really the twisted reincarnated form of a farmer who sacrificed goats in exchange for Satanic powers.

There is a well-known history of people dying either on the trestle or by falling from it. Many more have been severely injured.

The Monster at Pope Lick

Steve Rush
The New Voice - October 31,1990

Nobody knows when the quiet, rural area beyond Jeffersontown first became home to the community’s strangest, and definitely scariest, resident – the Pope Lick Monster.

But tales of the creature, also known as the Sheepman, have circulated for decades in eastern Jefferson County, and as Halloween night approaches, rumors of the beast again seem to be common.

“It’s always been around J-town,” said Michael Zettler, a 1985 graduate of J-town High School. “It was always talked about, especially around Halloween.”

“I first heard of it in the early 1960’s,” said Mary Ruckriegel, the wife of J-town Mayor Daniel Ruckriegel. “When I started dating Dan, the kids were always talking about it, especially during Halloween. I don’t know if it was a figment of someone’s imagination or what.”

“I can remember hearing stories of the thing when I was 4 or 5 years old,” said Rod Whitenack, a J-town native now in his early 20’s. “Every time Halloween would roll around, discussion about the monster would start up.”

There are probably as many residents of J-town as there are descriptions of the "thing" that supposedly lives below the rusty train trestle that passes over Pope Lick Road and Pope Lick Creek out Taylorsville Road near Fisherville.

Most describe the monster as a scary half-man, half-sheep, who terrorizes anyone who dares enter his domain. They say he has the features of both man and sheep, with horns, an ugly snout and a hairy brown body. He walks upright, has hooves for feet and can run at high speeds, enabling him to catch anyone in his territory.

Some say it is Jefferson County’s version of Ichabod Crane’s nightmare – a headless horseman-type monster who rides the tracks and kills anyone who crosses his path.

Others say it’s not a monster at all; it’s an old chemist who became a recluse after a chemical explosion in his lab terribly disfigured his face.

Others say it’s just a hermit who lived in a nearby shack and would scare away anyone who came near the trestle.

Still others say the figure that purportedly wanders the area is the deformed son of a local farmer, so hideous he won’t show his face until nighttime.

But whatever the description, the J-town monster has several similarities with other world-famous beasts. Like the Loch Ness Monster and Bigfoot, actual sightings of the Pope Lick Monster have been few and far between, if at all.

“There was always some guy who said he saw something out there.” Said Whitenack, who said he made many trips to the trestle. “But I never did.”

And like the Swamp Thing and the Creature from the Black Lagoon, the J-town monster has even been the focus of his own local flick, titles “The Legend of the Pope Lick Monster,” which premiered in Louisville in the fall of 1988. The 16-minute, black-and-white movie has been shown at the Vogue, The Uptown and, most recently, at the Water Tower, and been well received by area fans.

“I was looking for a Story indigenous to the area,” said the film’s director and producer local independent filmmaker Ron Schildknecht. “And the Sheepman is something only told around here; it’s been around at least three generations.”

Before he began filming, Schildknecht put in nearly a year of research o the subject. “I talked to 50 people formally and probably 100 more informally getting as much information as I could,” he said. “Was he half-man, half-sheep?” Did he walk on all fours or on two legs? Did he murder people or was he tame? I found a lot of interpretations; it was all real scattered out.”

Half the apparent appeal has been the imposing train trestle, which has stood overlooking the area since 1929. The trestle, which is still used regularly today, spans nearly 800 feet and is about 100 feet tall.

Over the years, teen-agers have been known to frequent the location in search of a remote spot where they could party without being bothered by police or parents.

“The trestles were a real popular place to go and drink and get rowdy,” Schildknecht said. “The talk of the a monster makes it much more attractive to go out there.”

“It was part of a senior tradition,” Ruckriegel said. “They would go out there to see if they could see it; it was a sign of bravery.”

“The boys would take the girls out there to try to scare them,” she added. “It was something really scary.”

While the site may have provided fun for some, tragedy has also come to many who have walked the tracks. In recent years, several youths have been killed, whether from falling from the trestle or after being caught on the tracks and hit by a train.

“It’s unfortunate,” Schildknecht said. “The story of the monster seems so harmless and innocent, except for the real danger of the railroad.”

About a year ago train officials put up a chain link fence with barbed wire to keep thrill-seekers from climbing to the tracks.

But that hasn’t stopped the rumors about the monster.

When the 32-year-old Schildknecht went there to film the movie, he didn’t see the beast but admitted even he found the place a little frightening. “It’s kinda eerie,” he said, “knowing the history and that people have been killed out there.”

“I didn’t feel anything supernatural,” he said. “I was just more intrigued with the ambiance of the trestle. And it’s pretty intense when a train goes by.”

Also finding the area spooky was Zettler, one of the high schoolers who with a couple of friends made the trek to the monster’s purported stomping ground.

“It was real scary.” He said. “Even though you know the legend is silly, you still think about it.”

As long as the legend has been told, no one knows for sure how it started.

“I’ve often wondered if it was a Halloween prank,” Ruckriegel said, “and then got blown out of proportion.”

“It probably started as a man walking his goat,” Zettler said. “It’s just a bunch of stories. It’s something you hear through the years.”

And the legend still exists in the East-End community today, but only to a degree.

“I think a lot of the kids today are too smart to believe all that stuff,” Ruckriegel said. “But I guess it’s still going around.”

“The story is still being told,” Schildknecht said. As long as there’s a trestle out there and long as there are kids in high school, it’s still alive.”

The Pope Lick Monster exist in the collective imaginations of hundreds of people,” he added, “which for me says he does exists.”

Just the Facts? Killing Bigfoot -- Texas Close Encounter -- Gruesome Discovery in Indiana

TBRC releases statement on 'The Echo Incident' and group's OK to kill Bigfoot

Statements made or reported as being made by Honobia, OK, resident Charles Branson at the Honobia Bigfoot Festival on 1 October 2011, concerning incidents that took place the previous July, contain inaccuracies. The basic facts are as follows.

The TBRC was on Mr. Branson’s property with his permission as part of Operation Endurance (OE). The group in place at the beginning of July, designated as the “Echo” team, was the fifth of ten teams to participate in OE. Subsequent events experienced by that team are referred to as the “Echo Incident” within the TBRC.

On 3 July 2011, at approximately 6:15 PM EDT and under clear daylight conditions, Daryl Colyer, Board Member and Field Operations Director of the TBRC, encountered a sasquatch on the Branson property. The observation occurred as he, along with fellow TBRC members Alex Diaz and Travis Lawrence, were investigating a loud banging sound originating from the direction of one of the hunting cabins (referred to by the TBRC as the "West Cabin"), not far from where they and one other member of Echo team were based. The sound was consistent with others heard over the duration of OE and suspected of having been made by sasquatches.

Colyer moved down the path toward the West Cabin with Diaz following at fifty or sixty feet. Lawrence was out of their sight as he followed a nearby parallel creek bed. When Colyer rounded a bend in the road and entered a clearing in front of the West Cabin, he witnessed a large, brown, upright, hair-covered figure walking in front of him at a distance of roughly 25-30 yards. Colyer noted it had long hair on its shoulders and the back of its head, which was distinctly conical in shape. He saw it from the left side and slightly to the back; its front was not visible to him at any point. Upon later comparison with a 6'3" tall TBRC member, the creature was estimated to have been both more massive and somewhat taller.

Walking to the south, the creature was momentarily obscured by vegetation and was then visible through an eight to ten foot opening in the dense foliage, still approximately 25-30 yards from Colyer’s position. Using his Remington 1100 Tac-4 12 gauge auto-loading shotgun, loaded with 000 buckshot followed by slugs, he attempted to collect the animal for scientific analysis, firing all the rounds in rapid succession. Colyer then approached the spot where the animal had been, reloading as he walked, but found no body. Within a few seconds he heard the faint sound of an automobile engine starting. When Diaz arrived at the location of the encounter, Colyer directed him to investigate the automobile sound. Diaz found a container of iced tea on the ground approximately 50 yards down the path, but he could not determine a source for the engine noise.

All four members of the Echo team attempted to track and locate the animal until it was too dark to see. Although the ground in the area was covered with leaves and other debris, the trail left by the animal was evident until it reached the nearby rocky creek bed. There were clear signs of its travel through the forest, including where it stepped on and crushed a fallen branch that was left unharmed when stepped on by the TBRC investigators. The slugs Colyer fired were all found embedded in trees near where he saw the animal. The team was unable to find any other evidence of the animal or its fate before losing daylight.

The team departed for home the next morning. Shortly after reestablishing cell phone coverage, Mr. Branson contacted the team and informed them that his nephew and his nephew's girlfriend had driven to the site the previous day. The nephew left his truck parked at the property gate and had begun to walk up the path toward the cabins when he heard what he mistook to be machine gun fire. He ran back to his truck and fled the area, apparently damaging his truck in the process. Colyer never saw or heard the truck prior to its departure, nor did he see or hear the two people. Their position, relative to Colyer's, was to the west through the dense forest, while the animal Colyer was attempting to collect was to his southwest. Neither they nor their vehicle was ever in the line of fire.

Following the conversation with Mr. Branson, team members made contact with Branson's son, a deputy sheriff in the area, and related the events to him. He advised contacting the County Sheriff's Office, since the nephew had reported that he had been shot at with a machine gun by "druggies." After communicating with the sheriff's office twice, the matter was dropped. Upon learning of the damage to his truck, said to amount to $1200, the TBRC offered the nephew $2,000 to help offset the cost of repairs. The check was cashed a few days after it was sent. Following a break of approximately one week, the TBRC resumed Operation Endurance to its planned completion.

In December of 2010, TBRC Chairman Alton Higgins clearly stated on the TBRC web site that the organization would "not stand in opposition to individuals—within or outside the TBRC—or groups supporting and/or actively pursuing efforts to obtain a specimen." He went on to add, "As a field biologist I have always indicated that I supported collecting a specimen for documentation and study." He went on to explain, "Biologists are trained to think in terms of, and to care about, populations. Collection of a voucher specimen is a way of protecting the population, from my perspective. It is not immoral, even if there are those who disagree for various emotional reasons." Those interested can read the position statement in its entirety here.

The TBRC plans on publishing a more complete account of Operation Endurance at a later date. - texasbigfoot

Small dark-skinned entity encounter

10/24/2011 - Texas - unedited: I woke up with my head turned to the side of my bed and opened my eyes to a being about 3 to 3-1/2 ft tall. The entity appeared to be female in orientation. "She" had her hair, which appeared to be black, pulled in to either a tight bun or pony tail behind her head. Her skin appeared to be a dark olive tone. She wore clothes but I don't remember them in detail. I knew she was "otherworldly" because of her facial features. Her eyes were small and completly black, she did not blink the entire time she was in my presence. Her mouth was lip-less and in a straight line on her face; it was also slightly parted. She also had extreamly high cheek bones. Her body did not move but she spoke to me telepathically. I don't remember what she said, but I do recall it was a repremand of some kind and that I replyed in a sarchastic manner. At no point did I feel afraid. My dog also acknowlaged the being. I after she spoke, I looked to the foot of my bed where my dog was running towards me. When I looked back to the being, she stayed visable for about 2 seconds then disappeared. Because of her human like appearance I question wither or not this was a full blooded entity or a hybred. I had the overwhelming feeling that she was familier to me and that we were used to each other's presence. This is my first memorably run-in with a being however i've had several indications that something may be going on. Just over a month ago, for instance, I found a red, freshly healed scoop mark on my inner thigh. - MUFON CMS

Toy doll baby cries in the night, saves family from fire

A toy doll that was part of a project to give teens a realistic look at parenting woke up 17-year-old Christian Deason just as a fire was destroying the family home.

The doll is programmed to cry at different times of the day and night, just like a newborn baby.

Deason's teacher had programmed the doll Friday before school let out for the weekend.

Deason brought the doll home not knowing when it was programmed to cry.

At 3:30 a.m. Oct. 24 the baby doll began to cry, waking Deason up just as the fire was eating its way through her La Vergne, Tennessee house.

Deason immediately got everyone out of the house.

"It was a big white wall of smoke, I fanned it for a second, and I see flames. I ran straight to my mothers room got her out, got my dog out, put the toy baby in the carrier, and we were out," said Deason.

La Vergne Fire Marshall Victor Woods said the fire detectors in the house were not working and the family had only about a minute to get out of the house.

"The toy doll crying was really the key to getting them out safely," said Woods.

Marina Deason, Christian Deason's mother, believes fate may have played a hand in the teacher setting the program for the doll to cry at 3:30 a.m.

"I think God works in mysterious ways, definitely fate had something to do with it," said Marina Deason.

"I was suppose to get this baby, I was suppose to take it home, everything was suppose to happen the way it happened," said Christian Deason. - wlbz2

Mass Alien Abduction Experiment in Los Angeles

Many were contacted by “aliens” during an experiment conducted by the OOBE Research Center at UCLA. It was the first experiment to ever prove that close encounters with UFOs and extraterrestrials are a product of the human mind.

20 volunteers assembled at UCLA on October 7th, 2011. They were instructed to perform a specific procedure upon overnight and early-morning awakenings over the next few days. More than half of the volunteers experienced at least one full or partial out-of-body experience as a result. 7 of them reported making visual contact with UFOs or extraterrestrials. Meanwhile, the sensations they described were identical to those of accounts by “alien abduction survivors”. By some estimates, up to one million Americans experience such encounters every year.

According to the researchers, the term “out-of-body experience” is used to refer to the sensation of having left the body, and not a real exit of some essence from the physical body - although this is just the impression often had by test subjects.

The fact that UFOs and extraterrestrials may be deliberately encountered in a controlled manner and within a few days proves that such experiences are a product of the human brain. Experiment author Michael Raduga explained, "We tried to right a common misconception with this experiment - the issue at hand isn't extraterrestrials, but hidden human abilities. If you've encountered UFOs or aliens after sitting or lying down, it can now be unequivocally stated that you've had a spontaneous out-of-body experience. We have proven this."

It has long been theorized that encounters with extraterrestrials are nearly always the result of spontaneous out-of-body experience. However, scientific proof would have to wait until the discovery of methods for inducing the out-of-body state. In September 2007, the OOBE Research Center started to conduct hundreds of experiments on thousands of people in 5 countries. That work resulted in the development of a procedure allowing anyone to have an out-of-body experience within the first several attempts. This procedure in turn allowed for the OOBE theory of extraterrestrial encounters to be tested and proven correct. The experiment was led by Michael Raduga, founder and head of the OOBE Research Center, as well as the author of 10 published books, the best-known of which is School of Out-of-Body Travel - obe4

Gruesome discovers in Indiana house

With Halloween just around the corner, one Indiana family is starting to feel like they're living in a haunted house after discovering bones, embalming tools and gruesome photos of the dead in their attic.

"I won't stay by myself," Patricia Booher told The Huffington Post. "I have an uneasy feeling. I don't know what it is. I've tried to stay here but I can't."

Booher and her husband, Richard, recently moved into their home in Knightstown, a small town about 40 miles east of Indianapolis. On Monday, they were looking in the attic of for a place to store their air conditioner when they made the first of a series of bizarre discoveries.

"There were boxes of stuff in there. We thought it was knickknacks or some old dishes someone had left," Booher said. "When [Richard] started pulling the stuff out, we found a box of empty disinfectant bottles and a wooden crate full of bottles of embalming fluid. Then he pulled out a suitcase that was full of embalming equipment -- hoses and stuff."

The more the family looked through the boxes, the creepier their finds became.

"There were knives in a case that folded out, scalpels, scissors and things they work on people with," Booher continued. "Then we found pictures of dead people -- before and after pictures of them being worked on, a projector with similar films and a skeleton."

The skeleton and the collection of morbid items concerned the family enough that they contacted the Knightstown Police Department. Officers took photos of the items and examined the bones.

"The skeleton was determined to be a model -- like you would see on display in a doctor's office or a school classroom," Knightstown Police officer Anthony Lorton told The Huffington Post.

While police examined the other items, Booher and her family got curious and began digging around in their basement and backyard.

"My daughter, son and niece found a few bones in the basement. Then we found four more pieces: a hip joint, vertebra, index finger bone and a rib bone," Booher said.

So far, the findings have been frightening -- but they haven't aroused suspicions of foul play, according to police.

"The bones found in the cellar have been ruled out as animal bones," Lorton said. "We took the others to [the anthropology department at] Ball State University to be tested to see what they are. That will be done Friday."

Booher said family members are continuing to dig in the backyard today.

"I'm not saying the person who put this stuff here was a bad man. I just want to know why it was left here. Why are there bones here? You have to honor the dead," Booher said.

Whether the most recent bones are human is yet to be seen, but Lorton said he thinks he may have some explanation for the scary discoveries.

"The story we are getting is that there was a gentleman who was renting to own the property and up and left it, along with a lot of his stuff at the house," he said. "So that is probably where all that stuff came from."

The photos of dead people appear to be from the 1970s and 1980s, the officer said, and were likely taken by the person who performed their embalming.

"Look at them from the standpoint of an individual who is keeping a portfolio of his work," Lorton said. "To the everyday person, they are going to be disturbing to look at, but for a person trying to get a job at a funeral home, they are examples of his work."

Lorton added, "Is it creepy? Yes. Criminal? No."

As for the skeleton, the officer said he may have his own plans for it if the Boohers do not want it back.

"I am half tempted to put a hat on it and have it running radar," Lorton joked. - Photos at THP

The East Bay UFO Landing

Three Contra Costa County, CA boys say they saw an object resembling a flying saucer land in West Pittsburg, CA on the night of May 20, 1977. They fled when unknown creatures came toward them, walking like robots and surrounded by smoke or steam vapor. The Center for UFO Studies, directed by J. Allen Hynek, considered this to be one of only three credible humanoid encounter cases of the year. Since that time there has been some second guessing of this case though it is a lesser recognized close encounter. I have also included 3 other reports during a small flap in 2006-2007 in the same East Bay area of Pittsburg:

On the night of May 20, 1977, three Contra Costa County boys say they saw an object resembling a flying saucer land in West Pittsburg, CA.

They fled in terror when strange creatures came toward them, walking like stiff robots surrounded by smoke or steam vapor.

Police officers and scientists who interviewed the boys said all three told the same story, in detail, in separate interviews, and said the three boys were genuinely and deeply frightened by whatever they experienced that night.

This incident has now gone down in the record books as one of only three apparently credible cases of a "Close Encounter of the Third Kind" reported in the United States last year, according to the Center for UFO Studies in Evanston, III.

The center, directed by J. Allen Hynek, has a number of distinguished scientists as investigators and consultants.

The center was established recently as "a place where people can report UFO incidents without fear of ridicule and with the assurance that there will be a credible follow-up investigation," according to Richard Haines, a psychologist tor a government agency, who as a hobby helped investigate the West Pittsburg UFO sighting.

Haines was impressed by the depth of similar detail in the separate stories told by the three 14-year-old boys. However, he noted, there is no independent corroborating evidence by other eyewitnesses.

The boys are not expert observers (such as pilots or ship navigators). There were no UFO radar sightings that night. There were no obvious marks on the ground or magnetic changes in the earth at the supposed landing site when Haines visted the location a month later.

There is a chance this could be a hoax or some kind of illusion, he said, noting that there are many possible psychological interpretations of such a story told by boys from broken or incomplete homes who were out late at night, in a strange, dark place.

He noted that the boys reported getting only brief, ill-defined views of whatever it was they encountered. Further interviews under hypnosis probably would not produce more details.

For these reasons, Haines concluded, "I do not believe that the evidence which now exists, as of this time, warrants further investigation."

This incident in Contra Costa County has gone into the international record books. People interested in the question of unidentified flying objects will be talking about it and writing about it for years.

For that reason, it is worth examining in some detail.

As a historic event, the incident at West Pittsburg is one of the last reported sightings of allegedly alien creatures to have occurred in the United States before the advent of the movie "Close Encounters of the Third Kind." The movie made UFO-watching a popular backyard sport in the United States.

The three boys, then 14-years-old, who reported the sighting are:

• Lennie Young, who then lived with his mother, Mary Clark, at 10 Roberts St., West Pittsburg. He now lives with grandparents in Walnut Creek.

Lennie said he is familiar with the area and has spent "many nights" in the meadow where the sighting happened and "knows" that what he saw was not human beings walking in the darkness.

• George Ferrera, son of Muriel Wilder, of 320 First Avenue South, Pacheoo. He had never before been to West Pittsburg and came to town to spend the night with his friend Patrick, who used to live in Pacheco. Police said George was the calmest of the frightened trio on the night of the sightings. His mother said he still has nightmares about the event. "I think he saw a UFO," Mrs. Wilder said.

• Patrick Morrison, who then lived at 90 Bay View Avenue (around the corner from Lennie Young) in West Pittsburg. The boys fled in terror to Morrison's home after the sighting. His mother, Wanda Morrison, recently remarried and they now live on Clear Land Circle.

Sometime before 11 p.m. the three were at a grassy field north of Willow Pass Road near Mallard Slough Road, in an area between the Santa Fe Railroad tracks and the marsh at the edge of Suisun Bay.

They were considering hitchhiking to the nearby community of Shore Acres or going to "The Pump House," a nearby unauthorized gathering place for local young people.

The pump house, which is near the reported UFO landing, site, is a castle-like structure of i concrete and steel, complete with a moat and a bridge, housing the pumps which during some seasons lift fresh water out of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta for the Treated Water Division of the Contra Costa County Water District.

According to the story the boys later told to Haines and to Contra Costa County Deputy Sheriff Douglas Pendleton, they saw a group of bright red lights, apparently joined together, with a blue light flitting like a firefly around the other lights. They said the object flew away rapidly (covering what on the map would be more than three miles in about five seconds) and then came back and landed nearby.

The descriptions vary somewhat, but all remember it having a row of square lights, like windows, with one "window" larger than the others. None of the boys call it a "flying saucer.' Young said it was "round but flat." Ferrera compared it to a flying building. Morrison recalls lights blinking on and off and reflecting from the sides of the flying object.

Then, the boys said, emerging from darkness between themselves and the UFO they saw three creatures 50 to 150 feet away, barely visible in the light from two street lamps and a nearby liquor store.

Lennie Young remembers, "'They were like smoke. They were black. They had no faces. I don't know if they had arms or heads. It was like they had no clothes on. They were walking towards us. They were about 5 feet 6 inches to 6 feet tall.

"I've stayed out all night in that field several times and I know what people look like walking in the dark. They were not people They were something else."

Pat Morrison said, "They wore weird looking, walking slow. They looked like they were wearing long skirts over their heads. They were black. They walked as if they were linked together," (like figures in a chain gang).

George Ferrera remembers them as "gray objects, with a kind of human shape, but no eyes. They walked like robots.' George's mother said since that night the youth has had nightmares and refuses to go back to West Pittsburg. "His friends had a hard time convincing him to go see the movie 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind' Mrs. Wilder said.

Haines said that as the boys fled in terror to Pat Morrison's house, they said they looked back, and for a while the figures seemed to be following close behind.

Mrs. Morrison called the sheriff's office.

Pendleton said all three gave the same story and offered to take a lie detector test. The boys did not appear to have been drinking or using drugs, Pendleton said. The deputy said the boys appeared to be genuinely terrified and one boy was shaking badly.

Haines, who works for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and makes UFO investigation his avocation, said he has conducted 3,000 UFO inquiries, concentrating on sightings by pilots. He is writing a book on the subject.

"I found that the three boys had a consistent story with a level of detail present that does not appear to have been manufactured. If they had made up the story, they would have had to remember it very well. Their fright was very real," Haines said.

He determined that the weather was clear and it was unlikely that the boys were seeing their own shadows reflected on ground fog. He said no American airplanes carry the colors described by the boys. He made a magnetometer survey of the grassy field and found no evidence of magnetic changes or scorched grass or holes at the supposed UFO landing site.

While the pyschologist was making engineering surveys, a well-known engineer was trying to probe into young Ferrera's unconscious memories, but found the boy was not a good subject for hypnosis.

James A. Harder, a professor of hydraulic engineering at the University of California at Berkeley, investigated the West Pittsburg sighting in his capacity as director of research for the Aerial Phenomena Research Organization in Tucson, AZ.

Harder said there was no physical evidence at the scene and his talks with the boys Indicated, "There was nothing more we could recover other than what they had already talked about."

Allan Hendry, editor of the International UFO Reporter said, "This is a 50-50 case if there ever was one."

Hendry said he talked to the airport tower supervisors who were on duty at the time at Oakland, San Francisco and Travis Air Force Base and said there were no reports of UFOs-by pilots or on radar that night. He said two aerial advertising firms in Oakland were not flying at the time. - FRED GARRETSON - Oakland Tribune (Oakland, CA), Apr. 2, 1978 - "Eastbay close encounter: Contra Costa UFO rates 'credible third kind' label"

Pittsburg, California (1-15-2007)

Witness statement - unedited: I live in Pittsburg California. At about 6:55 pm I was on my way to the grocery store headed east on frontage road with my 10 year old daughter. I noticed two brigt reddish orange lights moving slow above highway 4, railroad exit, thought it was helicopters, and I ask my daughter what is that? I do not hear any noise, like a helicopter sounds. I noticed these objects, two, turning west very slowly, so I made a u-turn and told my daughter that I wanted to get the binoculars from our home, I noticed the objects were above my vehicle like they were following us? When we arrived at home, I asked my daughter to get her father and and my 16 year old daughter.

We got the binoculars, my husband and my 10 year dauhgter both said it looked like balls of fire, and my husband said, there is three balls not two, at this time about 7:10pm the objects were abouve us while we were standing on the sidewalk. When I tried to look at these objects, I only seen a second of one of them and it looked like a bright fire ball, then it dissapeared. My 16 year old tried to look thru the bionculars and could not see anything.

After I seen one dissapear, the other two followed after. I did not think of a camera at the time, I was curious about the objects, what they were? I did not know whom to call, I opened the phone book and called 911 non emergency and asked if there was any one I could call about this sighting, and if any one else had called obout it, the reply that the gentleman gave me was he had no idea whom I could call and that no one else had called in. I then went on line to Yahoo and located a number to call,it is called UFO North West, the gentlemans name is William Puckett, phone# 1866-611-8367. My family and I looked up at the sky several times after to see if we could see anything, nothing. Then at 9:30 pm. my husband went out to have a cigar, then yelled, Lisa, Lisa, I see one again! It was east of our front yard, just one this time, I called my 16 year old daughter because I asked her to have her poloroid digital camera ready just in case, she took a picture of this object, had it zoomed in a 3x, I also called my neighbors a husband and wife and their two sons to see this object, they were able to see it for about ten minutes, then it dissapeard. When we looked at picture it looked like three objects instead one? Immediatly I called Mr.Puckett and emailed him the photo. He was kind enough to forward the information to the Mutual UFO Network.

Hopefully someone in the City of Pittsburg seen also what we saw and will report it. I have never seen anything like this before, My family and I were astonished by this sighting, we were quite excited to see what we believe was a ufo. - MUFON CMS

Date of Sighting: January 15, 2007
Time of Sighting: 6:55 PM and Again at 9:30 PM PST
Date Reported: January 15, 2007
Duration of Sightings: First Sighting Lasted 15 to 20 Minutes. (2nd Sighting Was of Shorter Duration, But Exaction Duration is Unknown.)
Location of Sighting: Pittsburg, California (About 50 Miles Northeast of San Francisco)
Latitude: 38.0 Degrees North
Longitude: 121.89 Degrees West
Number of Witnesses: At Least Eight
Number of Witnesses Interviewed: Two
Weather: Clear Skies. Stars Visible.

Description: Three witnesses (parents and 10 year old daughter) saw three bright orange fireballs at two separate times (6:55 PM and 9:30 PM). The witness (mother) was driving home and noticed the fireballs in the sky at 6:55 PM. She said that they were moving very slowly southward at constant very slow speed. They gradually disappeared and were visible for nearly 20 minutes. The witness had arrived home before the fireballs disappeared. The fireballs were viewed through binoculars by one of the witnesses (husband). Apparently the motion was linear and continued southward. No sound was heard. The witness reported the first sighting to me within 20 minutes. Shortly after 9:30 PM I received another call from the witness saying that they saw the fireballs again. This time they were not moving and were hovering (east of the witnesses). This time the daughter managed to take a photo (see above). I interviewed the daughter and she said that when the fireballs disappeared (on both occasions) they exploded into green, blue, and red stars. The fireballs were about twice the size of the brightest star. The photo was taken with a Polaroid Digital Camera Model i533 at 3X Zoom. (The camera had a resolution of 6 megapixels.)

Investigator's Notes: I originally thought that the fireballs were meteors or space debris, but changed my position given the lengthy time of the first sighting (about 20 minutes). The photo above suggests little (if any) movement because there is no apparent "time exposure" in the photo. The drawing provided by the 10 year old witness shows much more detail than what was revealed by the photo. This is quite possible given that the photo was a brief "snapshot" of one sighting and both sightings lasted several minutes. Given available information I have no explanation for what the witnesses saw and photographed.

Notes From Steve Reichmuth (MUFON Investigator in the Local Area): Steve interviewed a total of eight witnesses from two families that saw the lights. Apparently the lights looked much different than what was seen in the photo. Steve said that some of the witnesses looked at the light through binoculars of 50X power. They saw a circular bright light. The additional witnesses from the second family were only privy to the second sighting. I have enhanced the photo above by increasing the brightness. This enhancement shows that the lights may have been joined although the joining could be due to movement that is faster than the shutter speed of the camera.

Date of Sighting: November, 2006 (Exact Date Unknown)
Time of Sighting: 11 PM PST
Date Sighting Reported: May 9, 2007
Duration of Sighting: Witness Took 18 Seconds of Video Footage
Location of Sighting: Pittsburgh, California (About 50 Miles Northeast of San Francisco)
Latitude: 38.0 Degrees North
Longitude: 121.89 Degrees West
Number of Witnesses: One
Weather: Not Known.

Description: The witness sent the video which she said was taken from her residence. She has previously sent several photos of other UFO sightings that occurred on July 5, 2006. Click here to read this report. The witness stated that this object to the east of her residence. She has not provided any further detail. The video was taken with a digital camera. (Many new digital cameras will take videos if they are equipped with a high storage memory stick.)

Investigator's Notes: This is a strange video, but more information needs to be acquired before anything definitive can be said. I have spoken with the witness on the phone a couple of times and she seems quite sincere. She claims to possess some "inituitive" powers to where UFOs will show up. She also stated that she has had received implants in some "encounters." The witness is quite proficient with photo and video editing software. Skeptics might use this argument to discount the authenticity of her footage.

Date of Sighting: July 5, 2006
Time of Sighting: 5 AM PDT (Time Needs to Be Confirmed)
Date Sighting Reported: April 30, 2007
Duration of Sighting: Witness Took 24 Minutes of Video Footage
Location of Sighting: Pittsburgh, California (About 50 Miles Northeast of San Francisco)
Latitude: 38.0 Degrees North
Longitude: 121.89 Degrees West
Number of Witnesses: Three
Number of Witnesses Interviewed: One
Weather: Cloudy Skies. Visibility 10 Miles.

Description: The witness wrote a long description of the experience. For clarity the witness report has been shortened. According to the witness several sightings had been made over a period of time near a power plant in Pittsburgh, California. (The witness did not specify how many sightings occurred and the length of the time period.) The above images were extracted from a 24 minute video taken early in the morning on July 5, 2006. The witness said that she "filled in half of the face by copying and pasting a mirror image" using graphics editing software. The result was the above image of a face which the witness describes as "alien." The other image of "ship" was annotated by the witness to show positions of the "ships" and the nearby power plant. This witness also captured an interesting video of "gold fish" shaped object in November of 2006. Click here to read this report.

Investigator's Notes: The images sent by witness are quite interesting. The one image does indeed resemble a face. However, given that this image has been edited it is difficult to say this image represents anything unusual. The other image extracted from the video with annotations is intriquing. The apparent ship is not evident when you look at the raw image extracted from the video, but when the image is blown up it reveals some sort of structure. This video was taken towards the east at sunrise. There is a possibility that the image could be a reflection of something rather than a real object. More analysis of the area is really needed to check for these possibilities. The witness claims to possess intuition of when and where UFO activity will occur. She that was the case when this video was taken.

Just the Facts? New CGI May Increase Hoaxing -- Argentina Crop Circles -- Blame The Trees

New CGI software bound to cause rise in the paranormal hoaxing

Researchers have lit up the world of 3D design with a new method for inserting computer-generated objects into a photograph in a way that makes the CGI renders seem part of the original snap.

Kevin Karsch, Varsha Hedau, David Forsyth and Derek Hoiem, all students from the University of Illinois, have come up with a method that maps the lighting characteristics of any photo and applies it to a 3D model that is to be composited into the shot.

You can add any item, even "objects with diffuse, specular and... glowing materials". The system correctly mixes the object's own lighting with that of its photo-sourced environment.

It also deals with complex shadows already present within in the scene, and ensures the objects themselves correctly cast shadows.

The group claims its method doesn't require extra information about the scene into which the object is to be place than other such insertion methods do.

The technique would have applications in the movie and gaming industry, as well as home decoration and user content creation, they say. - reghardware

WTF? Trees blamed for lack of air

A day after 136 students collapsed at a Kompong Cham high school while standing at attention as punishment for not showing deference to the national flag, the local police chief offered a unique explanation for the mass fainting – trees.

“According to the hospital’s analysis, the reason why the students fainted is [because of] the huge tree in the school compound and the farmland surrounding the school, which absorbed the oxygen,” said Heng Meng, police chief of Chamkar Leu district, adding that the punishment could not be blamed as one of the teachers “also [had difficulty breathing] and felt dizzy”.

Heng Phal Rith, school director of Bosknor high school in Chamkar Leu district, also cited the hospital’s report in blaming the incident on a lack of oxygen, adding that he “did not punish the students. It is just a rumour”.

A doctor from the local hospital, Iv Then, said that based on his examination, the lack of oxygen was due to an abundance of trees, which trapped the oxygen, adding that the first four or five students fainted because they were standing under the school’s large medicinal oil tree.

World Health Organization representative Dr Pieter van Maaren said that while he was not a biologist by trade, the explanation admittedly sounded a bit odd.

“Dating back to my own biology classes, green plants and trees actually produce oxygen rather than capture it, so I’m a bit puzzled by [the explanation],” he said, adding that if they had said that the trees were producing a certain smell that affected the students’ composure, it might be more plausible.

Chamkar Leu District governor Ith Dara said he does not have any plans to charge the school director, because the incident was caused by nature. - phnompenhpost

'Himalayan Viagra' earns Bhutan's yak herders a fortune

Yak herders in Bhutan are growing rich from trading a rare aphrodisiacal mushroom found only in the high Himalayas.

The herders can earn more in a month from collecting the wild, parasitic Cordyceps sinensis fungus - dubbed "Himalayan Viagra" - than they can in a year from yaks, thanks to recent tales of its aphrodisiacal and medical properties.

It sells for as much as $80,000 a kilogram in Hong Kong after a Chinese running coach credited it with the success of his record-breaking athletes.

With a licensed household collecting as much as a kilogram of the fungus in a season, the archery-loving herders even started importing expensive bows from the US.

Aphrodisiacs and Antiaphrodisiacs

Dophu Dukpa, a Cordyceps auctioneer, said, "You can see the effects everywhere, in the new clothes and shoes. They are slaughtering far fewer yaks and spend a lot more time on their archery. But instead of the traditional bows, they are importing these fancy bows from the US."

Nigel Hywel-Jones, a British mycologist researching whether the trade is sustainable, said, "For one thing, it is very hard to find. It looks like a brown twig in a landscape of brown twigs. Secondly, an area that might be full of Cordyceps one year will have almost none the next. Those cycles, and the fact that pickers always miss a fair proportion, probably allow populations to recover."

The mushroom, which feeds on and then grows out of the body of the ghost moth caterpillar, is the subject of widespread pharmaceutical research.

One possible explanation for its effectiveness is that it contains an acid that closely mirrors one of the constituent elements of DNA. -

Hooker 'turns into donkey', court hears

A man caught having sex with a donkey stunned a court on Monday by claiming that the animal was in fact a hooker he pulled from a nightclub.

Sunday Moyo, 28, from Mandava township in Zvishavane, was charged with bestiality on Monday.

Zvishavane magistrate Mildred Matuvi heard how Moyo was found by police officers on routine patrol performing a sex act on the animal inside his yard just after 4AM last Sunday.

The donkey, which had been tied by the neck to a tree, was lying on the ground.

Although he was not formally asked to enter a plea, Moyo admitted committing the crime but told the magistrate an enthralling tale which had the court in stitches.
“Your worship, I only came to know that I was being intimate with a donkey when I got arrested,” he began.

“I had hired a prostitute and paid US$20 for the service at Down Town night club and I don’t know how she then became a donkey.”

The magistrate remanded Moyo in custody to October 27 and also ordered that he be examined by two government psychiatrists. - newzimbabwe

New Crop Circles at Chicoana Argentina!

Scott Corrales: Inexplicata-The Journal of Hispanic Ufology

Source: Grupo GABIE
Date: 10.22.11

Several days ago, circles and other geometric shapes appeared in the wheat fields. Today, there are claims that a strange circular object flew over the area -- sometimes at very low altitude.

Several residents of the town of Chicoana in Salta -- where circles and geometric figures appeared only days ago -- claimed having seen a strange circular object flying over the area at very low altitude.

The alleged UFO was described by the witnesses -- some were even able to take photos and record video -- as a round object that changed color constantly. "The object was very odd. It changed colors at every instant from red to green before losing itself in the mountains after being visible for several seconds," said José Morales, a witness to the aerial phenomenon over Route 33 last Thursday.

In an interview with Diario El Tribuno, the man said that the UFO "was round and not very large. Many were able to see it. After returning a few times, it vanished to the south of Chicoana."

Olga Chocobar and her nephew were also able to see it on Wednesday and Thursday from Barrio la Rotonda.

"There was a very bright light moving from one side to another at low altitude and in the same area. Two days in a row. At times it floated and moved quickly at others. It changed colors, dimmed and then reappeared somewhere else," said the local resident. Last weekend, the fields of Chicoana, 35 kilometers from the capital city of Salta, also witnessed the appearance of strange shapes in the wheat, as occurred three years ago in other rural areas of the region.

This time, circles measuring some ten meters in diameter were added to the figures, similar to the Crop Circles that appeared in England in the late '70s ane were later found in various parts of the world, causing speculation that ranges from ufology to fraud and outright pranks.
