The Sleeping Prophet

Edgar Cayce has been called the "sleeping prophet," the "father of holistic medicine," and the most documented psychic of the 20th century. For more than 40 years of his adult life, Cayce gave psychic "readings" to thousands of seekers while in an unconscious state, diagnosing illnesses and revealing lives lived in the past and prophecies yet to come.

Cayce was born on a farm in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, in 1877, and his psychic abilities began to appear as early as his childhood. He was able to see and talk to his late grandfather's spirit, and often played with "imaginary friends" whom he said were spirits on the other side.

Through the years, Cayce would find that he had the ability to put himself into a sleep-like state by lying down on a couch, closing his eyes, and folding his hands over his stomach. In this state of relaxation and meditation, he was able to place his mind in contact with all time and space...the universal consciousness, also known as the super-conscious mind.

In 1910, the New York Times carried two pages of headlines and pictures in which he was declared the "World's Most Mysterious Man" A national magazine ran an article titled, "Miracle Man of Virginia Beach", and Cayce was swamped with an avalanche of 25,000 requests for medical help. President Woodrow Wilson sought the services of Edgar Cayce for healing and guidance while he was President and conceiving the idea of the League of Nations.

The Outbounder, Healer and Prophet

At the age of twenty-one, Cayce contracted a throat problem which developed into aphonia...a total loss of voice. Doctors were unable to help him, and Cayce began to regard his problem as incurable. He resorted to hypnosis, but this too had no useful effect until it occurred to Cayce to attempt re-entering the kind of hypnotic sleep which had enabled him to learn his schoolbooks when he was a boy. A hypnotist was found who was willing to give Cayce the necessary suggestion. Once in a trance, Cayce reportedly spoke in a clear voice, spelling out precisely what his symptoms were, and what should be done to cure them. Cayce had succeeded in curing himself and, in doing so, had launched himself on a lifelong career as a psychic diagnostician and healer.

It made no difference to Cayce whether his patient was sitting next to him in the same room or a total stranger living hundreds of miles away. His preparations for the health reading were always the same. As he himself described it, he would first loosen his clothing in order to have a perfectly freeflowing circulation. He would then lie on the couch in his office, with his head to the south, and his feet to the north. Placing his hands on his forehead between his eyes, he would wait a few moments until he received what he would call the go signal, a flash of brilliant white light. Cayce would then move his hands to his solar plexus, and fall into a trance. His wife would tell him the name and location of the patient, leaving out any mention of age, sex or physical problem. Cayce might pause a while before repeating the name and address until he had succeeded in 'locating' the patient and describing his or her condition. He would then prescribe medication and any other corrective measures, always ending his reading with the words: "We are through."

In 1933, he explained that he still understood very little about what he was doing. "Apparently," he said, "I am one of the few who can lay aside their own personalities sufficiently to allow their souls to make this attunement to a universal source of knowledge...but I say this without any desire to brag about it. In fact I do not claim to possess anything that other individuals do not inherently possess. Really and truly, I do not believe there is a single individual that does not possess this same ability I have. I am certain that all human beings have much greater powers than they are ever conscious of...if they would only be willing to pay the price of detachment from self-interest that it takes to develop those abilities."

Cayce took a holistic approach to health. He believed that a man was composed of body, mind and spirit, and that all three are one. He talked about consciousness in the cells of the body, each contributing to the total consciousness of the individual. Health, he indicated, would flow from a perfect harmony of body and mind. In accordance with the concept that we are what we eat, think and believe, Cayce would often urge his patients to improve their mental and spiritual outlook in order to regain their health.

Cayce's prophetic powers often emerged during readings. Cayce gave advice to businessmen who were worried about the location of their holdings or the stability of their stocks and bonds. Six months before the 1929 stock market crash he warned people to sell everything they owned. He predicted the beginning and end of both the First and Second World Wars. In October 1935, Cayce spoke of the coming holocaust in Europe. The Austrians and Germans, he said, and later the Japanese, would take sides. "Thus an unseen force, gradually growing, must result in an almost direct opposition to the Nazi, or Aryan theme. This will gradually produce a growth of animosities. And unless there is interference by what many call supernatural forces and influences, which are active in the affairs of nations and peoples, the whole world as it were...will be set on fire by militaristic groups and people who are for power expansion."

In 1939 he predicted the deaths of two presidents in office; "Ye are to have are to have strife between capital and labor. Ye are to have a division in thy own land, before ye have the second of the Presidents that next will not live through his office...a mob rule!" President Franklin D. Roosevelt died in office in April 1945. In November 1963, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas.

In 1944, he prophesied that China would one day be "the cradle of Christianity as applied in the lives of men." Through Russia, he said "comes the hope of the world. Not in respect to what is sometimes termed Communism or! But freedom...freedom! That each man will live for his fellow man. The principle has been born there. It will take years for it to be crystallized; yet out of Russia comes again the hope of the world." Russia, he said, would be guided by friendship with the United States. It's attempt to rule "not only the economic, but the mental and spiritual life" of its people was doomed to failure.

The possibility of a third world war was also predicted. He spoke of strife arising "near the Davis Straits," and "in Libya, and in Egypt, in Ankara, and in Syria; through the straits around those areas above Australia, in the Indian Ocean and the Persian Gulf." When asked in June 1943 whether it would be feasible to work towards an international currency or a stabilization of international exchange levels when the war had ended, Cayce replied that it would be a long, long time before this would happen. Indeed, he said, "there may be another war over just such conditions."

One of Cayce's most striking predictions, particularly in view of many other prophecies relating to the approaching end of the millennium, concern dramatic changes in the Earth's surface in the period of 1958 to 1998. The cause of these he put down to a tilting in the Earth's rotational axis which he said would begin in 1936. He prophesied that the Earth's axis would be shifted by the year 2001, bringing on reversals in climate, "so that where there has been a frigid or semi-tropical climate, there will be a more tropical one, and moss and fern will grow." By this time, he indicated, a new cycle would begin.

Future Calamity

Cayce's most calamitous prediction came not long before he decided to start scaling back his session workload. He stated...."watch New York, Connecticut and the like. Many portions of the east coast will be disturbed, as well as many portions of the west coast, as well as the central portion of the United States. Los Angeles, San Francisco, most of all these will be among those that will be destroyed before New York, or New York City itself, will in the main disappear. This will be another generation though, here; while the southern portions of Carolina, Georgia, these will disappear. This will be much sooner. The waters of the Great Lakes will empty into the Gulf of Mexico." None of his predictions ever pinpointed the year 2012.

His lifelong secretary, Gladys Davis, took down virtually all his readings, and they are recorded and indexed in the Association for Enlightenment and Research, established in Virginia in 1932 to study Cayce's work. In all, he gave 14,879 readings, well over half of them for people concerned about their health. Over a period of forty-three years, he read for more than six thousand people.

In the spring of 1944, he became ill and began to grow weak. His own readings advised him to rest, but he felt a tremendous obligation to those who were asking for his help. Finally, he collapsed from sheer exhaustion; he gave his last reading for himself in September of 1944. The reading told him he had to rest. When his wife asked "How long?" the response was "until he is well or dead." Shortly afterwards, he had a stroke and became partially paralyzed. Although Edgar told them he would be healed after the first of the year, they understood what he meant and he died on January 3, 1945. He predicted the date of his burial, January 5, 1945...again, he was correct.

The following is a list of Cayce's most important and interesting known prophecies:

* "There will be upheavals in the Artic and Antarctic that will cause the eruption of volcanoes in the torrid areas, and pole shift."
* The greater portion of Europe will be changed in the twinkling of an eye.
* Southeast Canada will be safe from earth changes.
* Mt. Etna and nearby Vesuvius, and Mt Pelee signal the major changes.
* As to the changes physical again: The earth will be broken up in the western portion of America. The greater portion of Japan must go into the sea.
* The upper portion of Europe will be changed as in the twinkling of an eye. Land will appear off the east coast of America.
* There will be the upheavals in the Arctic and in the Antarctic that will make for the eruption of volcanoes in the Torrid areas, and there will be shifting then of the poles so that where there has been those of a frigid or the semitropical will become the more tropical, and moss and fern will grow. And these will begin in those periods in '58 to '98, when these will be proclaimed as the periods when His light will be seen again in the clouds. As to times, as to seasons, as to places, ALONE is it given to those who have named the name and who bear the mark of those of His calling and His election in their bodies. To them it shall be given.
* As to those things that deal with the mantle of the earth, these shall call upon the mountains to cover many. As ye have seen those in lowly places raised to those of power in the political, in the machinery of nations' activities, so shall ye see those in high places reduced and calling on the waters of darkness to cover them. And those that in the inmost recesses of theirselves awaken to the spiritual truths that are to be given, and those places that have acted in the capacity of teachers among men, the rottenness of those that have ministered in places will be brought to light, and turmoils and strifes shall enter. And, as there is the wavering of those that would enter as emissaries, as teachers, from the throne of life, the throne of light, the throne of immortality, and wage war in the air with those of darkness, then know ye the Armageddon is at hand.
* "And those that seek in the latter portion of the year of our Lord as ye have counted in and among men 1936, He will appear!" [Corrected to 1998]
* The sun will be darkened and there shall be proclaimed through the spiritual interception in the hearts and minds and souls that his star has appeared and will point the way for those who enter into the Holy of Holies in themselves. He will appear!" [Corrected to 1998]
* The regenerated shall come and declare that John Peniel is giving to the world the new order of things.
* [Cayce gave October 31 as the anniversary of Noah's Flood, or poleshift.
* "That same name as to which the priest was banished the constellation of Libra, or to Libya were these people sent.
* Is it not fitting, then, that these must return? as this priest may develop himself to be in that position, to be in the capacity of a LIBERATOR of the world in its relationships to individuals in those periods to come; for he must enter again at that period, or in 1998."
* There will be the breaking of agreements
* The earth changes are affected by sunspot cycle, they will be at max!
* The hottest weather occurs during the greatest sunspot activity.
* In 2100 AD water covered part of Alabama, and New York was gone. Most of the houses were of glass.
* Jupiter and Uranus influences in the affairs of the world appear the strongest on or about October 15 to the 20th destructive conditions
* May cause an earthquake in southern California
* "for the time and times and half times are at an end" [Propose a time is 1,000 years. If this count began with Daniel, the 2500 year span is coming to an end.]
* The young king's son will soon reign
* " In 1998 we may find a great deal of the activities as have been wrought by the gradual changes that are coming about. These are at the periods when the cycle of the solar activity, or the years as related to the sun's passage through the various spheres of activity become paramount or Catamount [?] [Tantamount?] to the change between the Piscean and the Aquarian age.
* Then the area where the entity is now located [Virginia Beach] will be among the safety lands, as will be portions of what is now Ohio, Indiana and Illinois, and much of the southern portion of Canada and the eastern portion of Canada; while the western land much of that is to be disturbed in this land as, of course, much in other lands."
* "The geographical changes, as we find, will not be of any appreciable change in the affairs of men, save as induced by those activities of men respecting their application of those laws pertaining to same, in this Particular generation."
* In America the people are to hold more power in their hands.
* that there would come three that would make of the perfect way of life. They achieved balance in their spiritual, their mental, their material experiences. They may proclaim the Atlantean records.
* If men in America don't show brotherly love civilization must wend its way westward, and again must Mongolia, must a hated people, be raised.
* "His messenger shall appear there." Hints, is finding those that make the paths straight.
* There are healing powers in the waters off Bimini, Changes near the site of the soon to be found Atlantis.
* Roosevelt was "called".
* "scientific change has been found by the observation into the terrestrial forces and into those places and conditions about the earth's planes, there is missing some one of the earth's companions or planets, and the combustion or destruction of same caused much changes"
* Quartz crystals amplify, lend, and synchronize many types of energy, such as light and electricity.

The Akashic Records and Edgar Cayce

The Akashic Records or "The Book of Life" can be equated to the universe's super computer system. It is this system that acts as the central storehouse of all information for every individual who has ever lived upon the earth. More than just a reservoir of events, the Akashic Records contain every deed, word, feeling, thought, and intent that has ever occurred at any time in the history of the world. Much more than simply a memory storehouse, however, these Akashic Records are interactive in that they have a tremendous influence upon our everyday lives, our relationships, our feelings and belief systems, and the potential realities we draw toward us.

The Akashic Records contain the entire history of every soul since the dawn of Creation. These records connect each one of us to one another. They contain the stimulus for every archetypal symbol or mythic story which has ever deeply touched patterns of human behavior and experience. They have been the inspiration for dreams and invention. They draw us toward or repel us from one another. They mold and shape levels of human consciousness. They are a portion of Divine Mind. They are the unbiased judge and jury that attempt to guide, educate, and transform every individual to become the very best that she or he can be. They embody an ever-changing fluid array of possible futures that are called into potential as we humans interact and learn from the data that has already been accumulated.

In terms of contemporary insights, perhaps the most extensive source of information regarding the Akashic Records comes from the clairvoyant work of Edgar Cayce (1877-1945), Christian mystic and founder of A.R.E. For forty-three years of his adult life, Edgar Cayce possessed the uncanny ability to lie down on a couch, close his eyes, fold his hands over his stomach, and put himself into some kind of an altered state in which virtually any type of information was available. The accuracy of Cayce's psychic work is evidenced by approximately one dozen biographies and literally hundreds of titles which explore various aspects of his information and the thousands of topics he discussed.

When asked about the source of his information, Cayce replied that there were essentially two. The first was the subconscious mind of the individual for whom he was giving the reading and the second was the Akashic Records. Cayce described his experience as follows:

"I see myself as a tiny dot out of my physical body, which lies inert before me. I find myself oppressed by darkness and there is a feeling of terrific loneliness. Suddenly, I am conscious of a white beam of light. As this tiny dot, I move upward following the light, knowing that I must follow it or be lost.

As I move along this path of light I gradually become conscious of various levels upon which there is movement. Upon the first levels there are vague, horrible shapes, grotesque forms such as one sees in nightmares. Passing on, there begin to appear on either side misshapen forms of human beings with some part of the body magnified. Again there is change and I become conscious of gray-hooded forms moving downward. Gradually, these become lighter in color. Then the direction changes and these forms move upward and the color of the robes grows rapidly lighter. Next, there begin to appear on either side vague outlines of houses, walls, trees, etc., but everything is motionless. As I pass on, there is more light and movement in what appear to be normal cities and towns. With the growth of movement I become conscious of sounds, at first indistinct rumblings, then music, laughter, and singing of birds. There is more and more light, the colors become very beautiful, and there is the sound of wonderful music. The houses are left behind, ahead there is only a blending of sound and color. Quite suddenly I come upon a hall of records. It is a hall without walls, without ceiling, but I am conscious of seeing an old man who hands me a large book, a record of the individual for whom I seek information."

NOTE: I find much of Cayce's work fascinating but hardly the work of a least not someone under the direct instruction of a Supreme Being. Let's say for argument's sake that Edgar Cayce's incredible predictions all came true. Even under that scenario, it would still be an unexplained phenomenon...not proof that a Deity exists. My spiritual agnostic nature aside, Cayce was blessed with extraordinary abilities...Lon

Fortean / Alternative News: Missouri Cougar, Alien Hand Syndrome and Mystery Goo

Camera captures cougar in Missouri

stltoday - It's impossible to mistake the big cat in the grainy black and white pictures — not with that distinct patch of white hair at its mouth, the muscled jaw line, bulging shoulders and sleek profile.

Call it a cougar, puma or panther.

The question is: What's it doing in Chesterfield?

The Missouri Department of Conservation isn't quite sure, but most likely the mountain lion was just passing through in search of territory or a mate.

The pictures taken Jan. 12 from a stationary wildlife camera mark the first confirmed sighting in St. Louis County since 1994, and the 13th in the state.

The department hasn't ruled out that the cougar might belong to one of the 32 people in the state who have permits to keep captive mountain lions. It's checking with them, conservation spokesman Joe Jerek said.

In the pictures, the cat is making its way around a tree. Its head is slung low, eyes set aglow from the camera's flash. You can't tell the lion's sex or age, the department said.

Although cougar sightings are rare, there have been three in the state since November. The other two were in rural Platte and Ray counties north of Kansas City. Jerek noted that both of those were also near the Missouri River, and it's likely the cougars were simply following the river.

The camera that captured the images of the mountain lion was set up by Chesterfield resident Garrett Jensen, a hunter and outdoors enthusiast. Jensen installed the Reconyx HC600 camera on a tree to monitor wildlife in the woods behind his home near Olive Boulevard and White Road.

The camera, which is triggered by heat and movement, automatically snapped a series of photos about 2:30 a.m. on Jan 12. Jensen was out of town at the time and discovered the images after he returned home and retrieved the memory card and combed through 2,000 shots.

"I was like, 'Oh, my God,' I really couldn't believe it had happened," said Jensen, 36, the owner of a tree service company. "I feel really lucky. ... I called everyone close to me and said, 'You're not going to believe this, I caught a mountain lion on my camera.'"

Jensen said conservation officials told him the cat appeared to have weighed about 120 pounds. A Missouri Wildlife Response Team at the site Wednesday did not find any tracks — snow on the ground when the cat appeared had melted — or fur but were still hopeful of finding a DNA sample from the woods, Jensen said.

"While we did not find further evidence, such as tracks, we can confirm that the photos are of a mountain lion at the reported location," said Jeff Beringer, a member of the team, said in statement.

Jensen installed the wildlife camera only six days before the mountain lion appeared. He picked the location based on the presence of several wildlife trails. The spot is between his home and a lake, making it a popular crossroads for creatures big and small.

In addition to the mountain lion, Jensen's camera captured shots of countless deer, squirrels, raccoons and a coyote. Jensen said he put up the camera to see if he would have any success bow-hunting deer on his property.

"It's almost just as fulfilling to me to capture stuff like this on camera than to go hunting and try to kill it," Jensen said. "I almost get the same rush with the camera that I do when I go hunting."

Mountain lions were largely driven from the state by deforestation and hunting by the 1920s. The state hasn't had a breeding population in decades. The closest groups of cougars live in Nebraska and South Dakota, Jerek said. But their range is immense. "They can travel for hundreds of miles," Jerek said.

Despite the recent sightings, there's no evidence suggesting mountain lions are re-establishing a population in Missouri, the Conservation Department said.

"In states where even small populations of these big cats exist, there is plenty of hard evidence," Beringer said. "Florida, for example, has a population of only 100 mountain lions, yet several are killed by automobiles each year. They also have other clear, hard evidence like tracks, scat and kill sites."

'Alien Hand Syndrome' sees woman attacked by her own hand

An operation to control her epilepsy left Karen Byrne with no control of her left hand. The 55-year-old from New Jersey, now suffers from Alien Hand Syndrome.

Her left hand, and occasionally her left leg, behaves as if it were under the control of an alien intelligence.

Karen had emerged from the operation with a left hand that was out of control. Karen was unlucky. After the operation, the right side of her brain refused to be dominated by the left.

She has now suffered from Alien Hand Syndrome for 18 years, but fortunately for Karen her doctors have now found a medication that seems to have brought the right side of her brain back under some form of control.

Fossil female pterosaur found with preserved egg

BBC - For fossil hunters, it represents one of those breakthrough moments.

A pterosaur has been found in China beautifully preserved with an egg.

The egg indicates this ancient flying reptile was a female, and that realisation has allowed researchers to sex these creatures for the first time.

Writing in Science magazine, the palaeontologists make some broad statements about gender differences in pterosaurs, including the observation that only males sported a head-crest.

David Unwin, a palaeobiologist in the Department of Museum Studies at the University of Leicester, was part of the research team.

He told the BBC the discovery was astonishing: "If somebody had said to me a few years back that we would find this kind of association, I would just have laughed and said, 'yeah, maybe in a million years', because these sorts of things are incredibly rare."

Pterosaurs, also sometimes referred to as pterodactyls, dominated the skies in the Mesozoic Era, 220-65 million years ago. Although reptiles like the dinosaurs were plodding on the ground below them, they were not actually dinosaurs themselves - a common misconception.

This particular specimen has been dated to about 160 million years ago.

It was found by Junchang Lü and colleagues and excavated from sedimentary rocks in the famous fossil-hunting grounds of Liaoning Province in China. Liaoning has yielded many of the great finds in recent years, including a series of feathered dinos that have transformed thinking on bird evolution.

The new creature is from the Darwinopterus genus, or grouping, but has been dubbed simply as "Mrs T" (a contraction of "Mrs Pterodactyl") by the research team.

The state of the egg's shell suggests it was well developed and that Mrs T must have been very close to laying it when she died.

She appears to have had some sort of accident as her left forearm is broken. The researchers speculate she may have fallen from the sky during a storm or perhaps a volcanic eruption, sunk to the bottom of a lake and then been preserved in the sediments.

"The most important thing about this particular individual is that she has a relatively large pelvis compared to other individuals of the same pterosaur, Darwinopterus," explained Dr Unwin.

"This seems quite reasonable - females lay eggs, they probably need a slightly wider pelvis. And then the really exciting thing is that she has a skull which lacks any kind of adornment or decoration whatsoever. When we look at other individuals of Darwinopterus, we find quite a few individuals with a large crest on the skull.

"We're very confident now that we're dealing with two genders here - males with big crests and small hips, and females with no crest on the skull and large hips."

Mystery goo falls from the sky

dailymail - The FAA has launched an investigation after a mysterious greenish-yellow goo fell from the skies and splattered homes in Snyder, New York on Tuesday.

Homes along Washington Highway and Berryman Drive are now coated in yellow or green icicles. Walls and pavements are splashed with a bizarre deep brown substance.

Neighbours said the mystery substance appeared between the hours of 9am and midnight on Tuesday.

However the FAA swiftly launched an investigation and discarded that possibility.

A spokesman told ABC: 'The local flight standards inspectors investigated the situation and determined it was not from an aircraft.'

So what could it be?

The town waste engineer said they are looking in to it - and have already come across some rather distasteful theories.

'We received a call this morning from a woman who owns a house on the same street, Washington Highway. She gave us her explanation because it happened to her last year,' Lisa Kistner, a spokesman for the Amherst Town Supervisor's Office, told ABC.

'She said it's actually because the seagulls eat fast food at McDonald's, which upsets their digestive tract,' Ms Kistner explained.

And, Ms Kistner said, as soon as the woman convinced fast food restaurants to clean up the rubbish in their parking lots, she no longer had that problem.

'She suggested that someone check the fast food parking lots because that is probably the root cause of this issue,' Ms Kistner said.

The woman's bizarre account may not be that far enough. Bird experts who have examined images of the goo actually agree they do resemble bird droppings - though seagulls were ruled innocent.

Instead, according to Cornell's Lab of Ornithology, the droppings may be from a large flock of birds often found in upstate New York in January - European starlings.

But with the town's engineers still doing tests, locals will, for now, simply have to wait a bit longer - and perhaps invest in a good umbrella or two.

Odd Encounters: Loud Frightening Sounds, Strange White Light and Life Protecting Event

MUFON CMS - 12/13/2010 - Idaho: I was upstairs in 2 story house on my computer. It was during lunch break of the elementary school down the street @12-1 pm. Suddenly the doors started rattling in their frames throughout the 2nd story and the upstairs swayed violently. I know earthquakes, was sure it was one, then huge thud, thought perhaps explosion or something ran into the house. Began shouting at those on 1st floor below and they shouting back at me. When I was able to go down the stairs (felt stunned & afraid to go down at first)they gave me a different scenario, not feeling the house sway or doors rattle, but heard HUGE sound like "WOWWWWW WOWWWWW WOWWWW" over and over, very deep and also stunning. Then heard the kids at the school start screaming, which they often do, but not the same as play, but like fear. Before I made my way downstairs I went from window to window to look out to see if any vehicle had hit the house and saw about 5 large cloud-like discs, like pin-wheels standing on edge, separate, hanging in the sky over large elm trees down the block. It was a completely overcast day, except for this one open spot of blue sky filled with HUGE round pinwheel clouds. I thought them very odd, but was very rattled and was not thinking clearly and didn't think of my cellphone camera to take pictures and wish I had. Nor did I think more about the pinwheels until the next day as I watched evening local news KMVT when they asked if anyone had any additional information regarding the cause of the unknown sound of a large explosion on the 13th, Monday at noon. It wasn't until that moment that I realized what I had seen in the sky, puffy contrail of those whatever they are: drones, jets, UFOs that create fluffy trails that expand in grids over everywhere today, first noticed by me in Portland,OR. I did call the station and advise of what I had seen, but after that time, didn't hear anything more about it.Strange thing, time seemed locked in place during this event and we all laughed (nervously) about "the Mother Ship" stealing time from us because we felt disoriented for quite a long time after. We have no idea what it was, military aircraft? UFO? drone? If anyone knows, they aren't talking.

MUFON CMS - 8/2009 - Utah: I remember it was a sunny, summer day. Blue skies and warm. It was a Saturday, and myself, my husband and 13 yr old son were running errands, and I think we ate lunch prior to this also. We were stopped at the intersection on Redwood Road and 9800 South at the stop light. The all of a sudden we heard a loud BOOM in the car!! Our windows were rolled up, and we don't think it was a car backfire at all. It sounded like a shotgun went off inside of the car. I started shaking and tried to turn to see if my son was OK in the back seat. I was disoriented, so were they. My husband was checking himself for blood on his shirt and so was my son. I looked down at myself also, but I was frightened that I would see blood. It was like a jolt hit us or something. I finally said "is everyone OK?" My son replied, " yea mom I'm OK". We were all OK. The light turned green and we started to go finally. No one around us was affected, by that I mean others in cars around us. We were all saying what the heck was that? It was very strange and weird. My son felt like maybe we were hit by a time warp and got put back or something. It took me an hour to calm down from shaking and being scared. I still won't drive around that area at all. We have had other sightings and strange things happen to us. But that day still frightens me a lot!!

MUFON CMS - 4/1981 - Alabama: My fiance & I had just left her brother's house at around 11PM, in her father's car (mid-late 70's Olds Cutlass), on our way to stay the night at her brother's in-laws house. The house was on a rural peninsula of the Tenn. River, in the Scottsboro, AL area.

Approximately a few hundred yards into our trip (with no house immediately close by), the clear, cool night was interrupted by a startling event. The car lost its power, the street light went out and my battery-operated Seiko LCD watch (one of the first, which I still own but never use anymore) lost its power. At the same time, maybe a second or two after this occurred and having the car safely come to a stop, an incredibly bright, white light appeared off to our right side (tree side, not the side of the water). I opened my driver's side window and heard no crickets as we heard when we left her brother's house... it was dead silent.

The light stopped over our car and we tried to peer out the windshield to try and catch a glimpse of the object. After being blinded by the light, my fiancee wanted to get out to look. I cautioned her to stay in the car as we didn't know what it was. We locked our doors and sat there, trying to see what it was. After what appeared to be only a few minutes when my fiancee's watch restarted, which seemed like an eternity, the light disappeared as quickly as it had appeared. A few seconds after it left the scene (with no swoosh or other noise that we could discern), the idiot lights on the car came back on, the radio came back on and the headlights came on. I looked at my watch and, it too, had begun to work once again, as had fiancee's dial watch. I started the car and noticed the street light came back on and I heard crickets outside again, as I still had the window open (so much for using the locks). We finished our trip to town where we spent the nights during our trip.

Well, 28+ years later, we still talk about that night. Every so often, on long walks at night, in many areas of where we live and even places we visit, we have the street lights go out on us, but not all of them... just one or two... which may not mean anything at all in this context, but it is weird.

We once heard from a niece who grew up in Alabama that her grandparents (whom we stayed with on that trip in 1981) had similar events all the time on that stretch of road, at night, on their way home.

In conclusion, I have since read and heard many stories of a similar nature, and have seen some UFO type of explanations. However, I have no idea what it was that was present that April night in 1981. I do believe in UFOs and the possibility/reality of there being people other than ourselves in the Universe. And, I have heard double-talk denials of something or someone in the hangers at WPAFB from (now deceased) relatives who worked there. Were these people just pulling my teenage leg at the time? Probably... but, what if...

Terlingua, Texas was a mercury mining town in far west Texas. Open vertical mine shafts were abundant, some said to be hundreds of feet deep.

Sometime in the 80's my wife, son and I were vacationing there.

One evening after supper I decided to walk to the old cemetery which was perhaps two hundred yards from the motel room we occupied. I took a small flashlight as it was beginning to get dark. The trail was fairly well defined, though not marked.

Sunset cames on rapidly in that climate and it was soon dark enough to need the flashlight. The beam was weak but I kept going.

When the light finally went out I could still see the trail by star light.

Something stopped me. Not a physical presence, but something so strong that I could not take another step. I left the flashlight to mark my turn around point and headed back to our room.

Next morning, after coffee, I again headed toward the cemetery...... There was my flashlight in the trail. About six feet farther on was an unmarked, open mine shaft. The path lead directly to it.

I'm 76 now and I still remember that feeling as clearly as if it happened last night.

Thank you for the opportunity to share.

Fortean / Alternative News: The Human Pincushion, Chupacabras? Nope...Mangy Bear and Resurrecting Hollywood's Dead

The Mystery of the 'Human Pincushion'

Arnold Gerritt Henske was a Dutch artist and designer with a paranormal bent. In 1933, he changed his name to Mirin Dajo (Esperanto for “Amazing Dajo”) and took the stage. His performance? Having his assistant impale his hypnotized body with swords and rapiers. What at first glance looks like a striking version of an Andrew Mayne illusion, was actually something quite different.

It was real.

Doctors with x-ray machines confirmed: the weapons were penetrating his body, missing major organs somehow. He walked and even ran with swords sticking out of him, and all this took place with little or no bloodshed, even when the implement was removed.

How was this possible? Some say Dajo trained with Indian fakirs to learn the ancient art of body piercing, but as famed late magician Ali Bongo points out, no one in India was doing anything close to the feats Dajo was demonstrating.

When I first encountered this video, I showed it to author and former magician James “The Amazing” Randi for his take on it. He agreed that it was real, and that they were carefully avoiding major organs. He added that it probably hurt like hell. Dajo also swallowed razor blades and glass, which are feats that can be accomplished by experienced magicians and side show carnies.

Mirin Dajo used his “skill” to promote belief in the supernatural and demonstrate that, as swords could not hurt him, materialism was false. Humans could transcend the laws of physics if only they had enough faith in God. Sadly for Dajo, local governments would often refuse to give him a license to speak, though they would allow him to perform.

He claimed to hear voices from “guardian angels” that told him what to do. He also claimed that he’d been burned with red-hot pokers and shot in the head at close range, but these stunts were not filmed or otherwise documented. In some places, audiences became alarmed and organized prayer rallies asking God to intervene and stop this man from practicing sorcery.

Dr. Jennifer Saw, upon examining the video, suggests that he was creating a fistula, much like an earring hole. By gradually increasing puncture holes that carefully avoided his organs, scar tissue created a tube which would allow swords to pass through without harm.

He is said to have performed this feat over 500 times. In the video, you can see that is back is scarred from multiple punctures, though the bandages on his arms are unexplained. Also unexplained is how he dealt with the pain.

In May 1948, following the advice of his angels, Mirin Dajo swallowed a very large steel needle. He had it surgically removed two days later, and fell into a “trance.” Thee days later, the “trance” was discovered to be “death,” and the case of Mirin Dajo, age 36, was closed. Cause of death: a ruptured aorta, though many of his followers deny that.

The legacy of Arnold Gerritt Henske demonstrates that you can engage in extremely risky behaviors and impress people, but the odds will eventually catch up with you.

Navy steps closer to producing ultimate laser weapon

smartplanet - A recent breakthrough may lead to a powerful laser that gives U.S. Navy ships the upper hand in combat.

As part of the U.S. Navy’s research into developing a unique technology called Free Electron Laser or FEL, scientists at Los Alamos National Laboratory have announced that they’ve successfully built and tested a device called an injector that can produce the type of electrons needed to generate weapons-grade megawatt laser beams.

Originally invented in 1976 by John Madey, a physicist at Stanford University, the Free Electron Laser was of particular interest for personnel working under the Defense Department’s Strategic Defense Initiative, better known as Ronald Reagan’s “Star Wars” program.

And there’s a reason why.

Typically, lasers are generated by a machine that uses a combination of energy, mirrors and a lens to excite certain atoms to the point of emitting light particles called photons and then turning them into an intense and focused beam of light. Every laser operates on a specific wavelength, which is determined by the “lasing medium,” or in layman’s terms, the type of atoms used to produce the laser.

But FELs are generated with an entirely different technology that involve having an injector send a pulse of supercharged electrons through a particle accelerator, which allows for the beam to be fired at a wide range of wavelengths and for a long period of time. This means that FEL machines can be configured to shoot lasers at frequencies where the beam won’t weaken much as it travels through the air. Other lasers tend to get absorbed and scattered by moisture in the atmosphere.

Against an enemy, a weapons-grade caliber FEL would be an enormous advantage. Warships equipped with this technology can now shoot down incoming missiles regardless of environmental conditions. The laser can also be fired continuously without downtime between shots, making it capable of taking out multiple targets simultaneously. The achievement of a weapons-grade FEL would be such a boost to the Navy that science and fiction writer Doug Beason has called it the “Holy Grail of Lasers.”

For now, the current FEL power record is 14 kilowatts — a step closer, but still quite a distance from the 70 kilowatts necessary to make a 1 megawatt beam, laser engineer Olivia Koski graciously pointed out to us on Twitter. (She also noted that as little as 100 kilowatts is potent enough for a weapon.)

The U.S. Navy, which recently acquired Madey’s FEL, has committed to pouring 163 million dollars into research they hope would deliver a testable prototype by 2018. And as progress continues, FELs might bring us closer to what is becoming an increasingly sci-fi era of warfare.

Musicians killed in Mexico after refusing to play more songs for audience

Leaving the audience wanting more is the goal of every musician, unless you're a musician in violence-torn Mexico. Two members of local group La Excelencia were murdered in a Guadalajara bar early Monday morning after refusing to play more songs past closing time.

Jonathan Martinez, 22, and Gustavo Alejandro, 35, were pronounced dead outside the Vida Divina nightclub, gunned down by unidentified assailants with suspected ties to the country's notorious drug gangs. A third victim, identified as bar patron Leslie Soltero, 26, was taken to a local hospital with a gunshot wound to her ankle.

When La Excelencia's performance came to an end around 4 a.m. local time, four reportedly intoxicated and aggressive audience members demanded the musicians continue playing. Sensing trouble, the group extended its set by two songs, but was eventually forced to pull the plug by the bar's owner. Out of nowhere, one of the instigators threw a grenade at the stage. The explosion injured one person and had panicked customers running for the exits.

Martinez and Alejandro were among those who fled the bar, but they were met at the front door by a hail of bullets, presumably from the same four men who had harassed them earlier. By the time police arrived at the scene, the killers had already escaped by car. No witnesses were able to identify the getaway vehicle.

Man shoots mangy bear cub....thought it was Chupacabras

news10 - GEORGETOWN, CA - To handyman Frank Gallo, the creature that almost attacked him beside his rural trailer several days ago looked like the legendary Chupacabra.

"Scared the hell out of me," Gallo said. "It crouched and faced me and I shot two warning shots at it - 357-magnum, from 20-feet."

The shots seemed to have no effect and Gallo kept firing during the encounter.

"He looked down at where he'd been shot and let out a cry that sounded like, maybe a six year old girl. Ahhhhhh, really loud," Gallo said.

When Gallo saw the animal up close, it was even stranger.

"If you could feel this thing, if you could touch it, it's skin is like an elephant," Gallo said.

The animal had huge claws, canine-like teeth and almost no fur on its body. However, it was the animal's lack of fur that tipped off California Department of Fish and Game Warden Patrick Foy.

"(It's) probably a juvenile bear and has developed some type of an ailment that's caused it's skin to shed all of it's fur," Foy said.

To Gallo, it looked more like, the supposedly, mythical creature known in Mexico as a Chupacabra.

Gallo scoured the Internet, looking for images and information on the Chupacabra.

"Something like this (animal) will hit an animal, knock it down, grab it and suck the blood out of it. That's where the name Chupacabra comes from, it's Spanish for goat-sucker,"Gallo said.

"Could be a fairly new species, you know. Could be a mutation," Gallo said.

However the pictures told Foy it was more likely a bear. Late Tuesday evening, a game warden picked up the animal and confirmed Foy's suspicions that it was a young bear.

It may take several days to determine what caused the bear to lose it's fur.

"Somebody with an untrained eye would look at this and think that this was a pretty creepy-looking character," Foy acknowledged.

Gallo is not convinced.

"Doesn't move anything like a bear, didn't act like a bear. Doesn't make sounds like a bear," Gallo said. "There are skeptics and there are people that are open-minded."

Now, George Lucas plans to resurrect the dead

gizmodo - According to Mel Smith—friend of George Lucas and director of Radioland Murders—the creator of Star Wars is "buying up the film rights to dead actors." He says that Lucas plans to resurrect them in future movies using 3D technology:

George has been buying up the film rights to dead actors in the hope of using computer trickery to put them all together, so you'd have Orson Welles and Barbara Stanwyck alongside today's stars.

Of course, this is the British tabloid The Sun but, knowing the amazing digital 3D actor work in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Tron Legacy, Mel Smith's revelations don't surprise me at all. In fact, the possibility of doing this has been rumored in Hollywood for a while, but, if true, this seems the first actual news of someone buying "film rights" to dead movie stars.

In the words of Luke Skywalker: "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" This has so much evil potential for perpetrating crimes against common sense and good taste that it boggles my mind. Maybe we shouldn't forgive Lucas, after all.

Fortean / Alternative News: George Lucas' 2012 Fears, Hippo Attacks and House of Horrors

George Lucas Believes the World Will End in 2012

gizmodo - How far would your jaw have dropped if George Lucas told you how he thinks the world will end next year? If you were comedian/actor Seth Rogen, you'd scoop your jaw up and then tell the world all about it.

Rogen remembers:

"He's going on about the tectonic plates and all the time Spielberg is, like, rolling his eyes, like, 'My nerdy friend won't shut up, I'm sorry...'

I first thought he (Lucas) was joking... and then I totally realized he was serious and then I started thinking, 'If you're George Lucas and you actually think the world is gonna end in a year, there's no way you haven't built a spaceship for yourself... So I asked him... 'Can I have a seat on it?'

He claimed he didn't have a spaceship, but there's no doubt there's a Millennium Falcon in a garage somewhere with a pilot just waiting to go... It's gonna be him and Steven Spielberg and I'll be blown up like the rest of us."

Stray Hippo Attacks in Uganda

newvision - A total of 21 people have been killed by stray hippos on the shores of Lake Albert in Kibaale district, Uganda in the last one year. The latest incident occurred last week, when Wilson Monday and another fisherman, who is currently hospitalised, were attacked by hippos as they returned from fishing.

Kabukanga landing site information secretary Richard Sunday Kabila identified the other people kiiled by hippos as Alex Twinomugisha, Philimon Timasakira, Chapakazi Onega, Godfrey Mugisa, Matiasi Bizimana, Wilson Byaruhanga, Kosta Ntanda, Gabi Onega and Jackson Mumbere.

Others are Wako Chan, Saturday Twikirize, John Kadoma, Joseph Sanyu, Vincent Safari, Gerald Amis, George Weki, Topher Jalwin and Fred Kanyaihamba.

The victims were residents of Nyamasoga, Kamina, Rwebigongoro, Kitebere and Kabukanga landing sites in Kibaale district.

However, the district fisheries officer, Francis Gwazo, said the deaths were over two years.

“It is true that people have been killed, but not in a period of one year as alleged by the fishermen,” Gwazo said.

Enraged by the killings, the fishermen threatened to beat the Uganda Wildlife Authority officials from Ntoroko station, who argue that the hippos had to be protected.

Tom Okello Obbo, the conservation mananger at Murchison Falls, said the Uganda Wild life Authority was planning to sensitise fishermen on how they can live in harmony with the animals.

Okello said the hippos were important because they fertilised the water for fish breeding.

He said the fishermen were being killed because the fish in hippos’ habitats, where there was a lot of fish.

Okello said UWA could not authorise the killing of the hippos because they were part of the aquatic life necessary for the continuation of the fishing business.

Blame the Black Cat

irishtimes - A woman who has sued her former brother-in-law over ankle injuries suffered when she fell allegedly as a result of “a crumbling step” at his home, has denied in the High Court suggestions the fall was caused by a black cat.

Despite the belief of some people that encountering a black cat means good fortune, Margaret Caldwell said such an encounter had not brought her any luck and she remained in constant pain because of the fall.

While she observed a black cat sitting to her left after she fell on May 9th, 2007, she denied the fall was caused by the cat and said it was due to a “a crumbling step”.

Ms Caldwell (52), Oakleigh, Dublin Road, Navan, Co Meath, is suing Eugene Caldwell, Drumcargy, Upper Maracloon, Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan, over the fall. When Joseph McGettigan SC, for Mr Caldwell, put it to her that extracts from reports of two separate hospitals stated Ms Caldwell had told the hospital authorities she had fallen over a cat, Ms Caldwell said she told the hospitals she fell when a step crumbled and denied falling over a cat.

She agreed she had been involved in a road traffic incident in 2008 as a result of which she had secured €10,000 damages.

In evidence, Eugene Caldwell said Ms Caldwell had told him she had tripped on the cat and had not said anything about the step crumbling. There were always a couple of cats around the house, he said.

A crack in the step was inflicted by a JCB but there was no difficulty walking on it, and the step had been replaced due to water seeping into the house, he added.

The hearing was adjourned to Friday.

House of Horrors in Philadelphia

msnbc - A doctor whose abortion clinic was a filthy, foul-smelling "house of horrors" that was overlooked by regulators for years was charged Wednesday with murder, accused of delivering seven babies alive and then using scissors to kill them.

Hundreds of other babies likely died in the squalid clinic that Dr. Kermit Gosnell ran from 1979 to 2010, Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams said at a news conference.

"My comprehension of the English language can't adequately describe the barbaric nature of Dr. Gosnell," he added.

Williams said he might seek the death penalty for Gosnell, who with nine of his associates, including his wife, was arrested on Wednesday.

Gosnell was charged with murder, infanticide, conspiracy, abortion at 24 or more weeks and other charges.

Pennsylvania law prohibits abortion after 24 weeks except to save the life of the mother or avoid serious health risk to her.

In a nearly 300-page grand jury report filled with ghastly, stomach-turning detail, prosecutors said Pennsylvania regulators ignored complaints of barbaric conditions at Gosnell's clinic, which catered to poor, immigrant and minority women in the city's impoverished West Philadelphia section.

Prosecutors called the gruesome case a "complete regulatory collapse."

"Pennsylvania is not a third-world country," the district attorney's office declared in the report. "There were several oversight agencies that stumbled upon and should have shut down Kermit Gosnell long ago."

Gosnell, 69, was arrested and charged with eight counts of murder altogether in the alleged killings of seven babies and the death of a woman from an overdose of painkillers. Nine of Gosnell's employees — including his wife, a cosmetologist — also were charged.

Prosecutors said Gosnell made millions of dollars over three decades performing thousands of dangerous abortions, many of them illegal late-term procedures. His clinic had no trained nurses or medical staff other than Gosnell, a family physician not certified in obstetrics or gynecology, prosecutors said.

At least two women died from the procedures, while scores more were injured from perforated bowels, cervixes and uteruses, authorities said.

In a typical late-term abortion, the fetus is dismembered in the uterus and then removed in pieces. That is more common than the procedure opponents call "partial-birth abortion," in which the fetus is only partially extracted before being destroyed. Prosecutors said Gosnell instead delivered many of the babies alive.

He "induced labor, forced the live birth of viable babies in the sixth, seventh, eighth month of pregnancy and then killed those babies by cutting into the back of the neck with scissors and severing their spinal cord," District Attorney Seth Williams said.

Gosnell referred to the practice as "snipping," prosecutors said.

Prosecutors estimated Gosnell ended hundreds of pregnancies by cutting the spinal cords, but they said couldn't prosecute more cases because he destroyed files.

"These killings became so routine that no one could put an exact number on them," the grand jury report said. "They were considered 'standard procedure.'"

Defense attorney William J. Brennan, who represented Gosnell during the investigation, said: "Obviously, these allegations are very, very serious."

Authorities raided Gosnell's clinic early last year in search of controlled drug violations and stumbled upon "a house of horrors," Williams said. Bags and bottles holding aborted fetuses "were scattered throughout the building," the district attorney said. "There were jars, lining shelves, with severed feet that he kept for no medical purpose."

Prosecutors said the place reeked of cat urine because of the animals that were allowed to roam freely, instruments were not properly sterilized, and disposable medical supplied were used over and over.

Gosnell didn't advertise, but word got around. Women came from across the city, state and region for illegal late-term abortions, authorities said. They paid $325 for first-trimester abortions and $1,600 to $3,000 for abortions up to 30 weeks. The clinic took in $10,000 to $15,000 a day, authorities said.

"People knew near and far that if you needed a late-term abortion you could go see Dr. Gosnell," Williams said.

White women from the suburbs were ushered into a separate, slightly cleaner area because Gosnell believed they were more likely to file complaints, Williams said.

Few if any of the unconscious patients knew their babies had been born alive and then killed, prosecutors said. Many were first-time mothers who were told they were 24 weeks pregnant, even if they were much further along, authorities said.

Prosecutors said Gosnell falsified the ultrasound examinations that determine how far along a pregnancy is, teaching his staff to hold the probe in such a way that the fetus would look smaller.

Gosnell sometimes joked about the babies, saying one was so large he could "walk me to the bus stop," according to the report.

State regulators ignored complaints about Gosnell and the 46 lawsuits filed against him, and made just five annual inspections, most satisfactory, since the clinic opened in 1979. The inspections stopped completely in 1993 because of what prosecutors said was the pro-abortion rights attitude that set in after Democratic Gov. Robert Casey, an abortion foe, left office.

Williams accused the state Health Department officials of "utter disregard" for the safety of women undergoing abortion, and said the testimony of agency officials "enraged" the grand jury. But he said he could find no criminal offenses with which they could be charged, in part because too much time has elapsed.

"These officials were far more protective of themselves when they testified before the grand jury. Even (Health Department) lawyers, including the chief counsel, brought private attorneys with them — presumably at government expense," the report said.

The state's reluctance to investigate, under several administrations, may stem partly from the sensitivity of the abortion debate, Williams said. Nonetheless, he called Gosnell's case a clear case of murder.

"A doctor who with scissors cuts into the necks, severing the spinal cords of living, breathing babies who would survive with proper medical attention commits murder under the law," he said. "Regardless of one's feelings about abortion, whatever one's beliefs, that is the law."

Four clinic employees were also charged with murder, and five more, including Gosnell's wife, Pearl, with conspiracy, drug and other crimes. All were in custody. Gosnell's wife performed extremely late-term abortions on Sundays, the report said.

One of the murder charges against Gosnell involves a woman seeking an abortion, Karnamaya Mongar, who authorities said died in 2009 because she was given too much of the painkiller Demerol and other drugs.

Gosnell wasn't at the clinic at the time. His staff administered the drugs repeatedly as they waited for him to arrive at night, as was his custom, the grand jury found.

Mongar and her husband, Ash, had fled their native Bhutan and spent nearly 20 years in camps in Nepal. They had three children. A man who answered the phone Wednesday at a listing for Ash Mongar in Virginia did not speak English, while their daughter did not immediately return a message.

The malpractice suits filed against Gosnell include one over the death of a 22-year-old Philadelphia woman, a mother of two, who died of a bloodstream infection and a perforated uterus in 2000. Gosnell sometimes sewed up such injuries without telling the women about the complications, prosecutors said.

Gosnell earned his medical degree from Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia and is board certified in family practice. He started, but did not finish, a residency in obstetrics-gynecology, authorities said.

Assistant District Attorney Joanne Pescatore said: "He does not know how to do an abortion. Once he got them there, he saw dollar signs and did abortions that other people wouldn't do."

A local CBS station reported that around $240,000 in cash had been found when his house was searched.

It added that Gosnell had previously insisted he was innocent of any crimes and predicted he would be acquitted if he was charged.

NOTE: neither pro-abortion or pro-life advocates can take anything positive from this scenario...Lon

Burglars mistake cremated remains as cocaine...yeah, they snorted some

myfoxorlando - Marion County, Florida Sheriff's deputies on Tuesday arrested five burglary suspects stemming from an investigation which began last month.

The victim in the burglary said she returned to her home on Locust Lane in the Silver Springs Shores to discover that several items were missing. Some of the items included electronics and jewelry, but what she found most troubling, was the theft of her late father's ashes and the ashes of her two Great Danes.

During the investigation, detectives learned that the ashes were taken because the suspects mistook the cremains for either cocaine or heroin. It was soon discovered that the suspects snorted some of the ashes believing they were snorting cocaine.

According to detectives, the suspects realized they had the remains from the dogs and the victim's father, so the suspects got rid of the ashes. Detectives are presently working with the Marion County Sheriff's Office Dive Team to locate the ashes.

Arrested were Waldo Soroa, 19, who faces seven charges and has a bond of $17,000, Matrix Andaluz, 18, who faces six charges and has a bond of $11,500, and Jose David Diaz Marrero, 19, who faces four charges and has a bond of $9,000. There are two juvenile suspects facing charges which include attempted residential burglary and impairing a phone line to the home.

Also, in a difference incident, detectives charged all five suspects with attempted residential burglary and impairing the phone line to a home on Oak Circle in the same community. The victims in that incident, a married couple, were awakened by loud banging noises back and at one point, the victims were face-to-face with one of the suspects. That suspect took off running, while the other suspects raced away in one red car and one black car, according to the Marion County Sheriff's Office.

Edgar Allen Poe Toaster May Be 'Nevermore'

A Jan. 19, 2008 file photo shows the original grave of Edgar Allan Poe, with a bottle of cognac and roses left by a mysterious visitor in Baltimore

baltimoresun - Maybe the time for nevermore is finally here.

For the second year in a row, the mysterious Poe Toaster failed to show up at his namesake's Baltimore grave this morning. And the curator of the Poe House, who has spent years protecting the famed writer's legacy and fanning the flames of the toaster's legend, is about ready to give up on the ghost.

"I will be here in 2012, but that will be it," said a weary Jeff Jerome, who stayed by Poe's gravesite until 5:45 a.m. waiting for the toaster. "If he's a no show, I will officially pronounce the tradition dead."

Not that Poe, dead for 161 years, or the toaster, missing for two, are without fans — or potential successors. Jerome said four toaster wannabes showed up at the gravesite with the requisite cognac and red roses. But all, he insisted, were pretenders to the tradition, not the real thing. Even though the toaster's identity has remained secret — even Jerome swears he never knew a name or clearly saw a face — his general appearance remained constant. None of the four who showed up this morning matched it.

"They were not our boy," he said. "We can usually tell within a few seconds. We've been seeing this guy for a number of years, and I could tell just by looking at them that they were not the real Poe toaster."

For some 60 years, the toaster would appear every Jan. 19 to pay tribute to Poe, a Boston native who died on Oct. 7, 1849 in Baltimore under circumstances that have never been fully explained. Arriving at the gravesite without fanfare, he would leave behind three red roses and a bottle of cognac, then quietly disappear into the night.

Last year's no-show was the first since at least 1949. Speculation over the true identity of the Poe toaster has raged for years. Many names have been floated, including a Fells Point prankster who died in 2010, an ad man who said he started the tradition as a publicity stunt, a father-and-son team, even Jerome himself.

But Jerome, who has been shepherding the tradition since 1977, insists it's not him. And none of the other possibilities have conclusively panned out.

About a dozen people waited outside the gates of the Westminster Burying Grounds on Fayette Street this morning, but as dawn approached, it was clear the true toaster would not be showing up. Jerome eventually opened the gate and allowed the visitors to leave their own tributes on Poe's grave.

Interest in Poe, the writer of such mystery and horror classics as "The Tell-Tale Heart" and "The Black Cat," remains strong. Here in Baltimore, there's an NFL football team that invokes the name of one of Poe's most famous poems, "The Raven," every time it takes to the field. More than 100 fans gathered at Westminster Hall in November to watch an evening of Poe-related films, and a new movie based on Poe's life recently finished filming in Belgrade, with John Cusack playing the melancholy author.

Jerome said he appreciated the enthusiasm of the four would-be toasters, each of whom made far-too-grandiose an entrance to be the real thing. But if the real toaster is gone, he said, it's time to let the tradition die.

"If it is over, let it die a noble death," he pleaded.

And if someone is intent on keeping the tradition going?

"After next year, they'll have to be climbing over the fence," Jerome said. "They'll have to wait until the cemetery gates open during the day."

Edgar Allan Poe to Receive the Funeral He Should Have Had

Jeff Jerome, curator of the Poe House and Museum looks over a replica of the body of Edgar Allan Poe, in Baltimore, Monday, Oct. 5, 2009. The Poe House will host a viewing of a replica of the body of Poe on Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2009, followed by the funeral he never had on Sunday. - For Edgar Allan Poe, 2009 has been a better year than 1849. After dozens of events in several cities to mark the 200th anniversary of his birth, he's about to get the grand funeral that a writer of his stature should have received when he died.

One hundred sixty years ago, the beleaguered, impoverished Poe was found, delirious and in distress outside a Baltimore tavern. He was never coherent enough to explain what had befallen him since leaving Richmond, Va., a week earlier. He spent four days in a hospital before he died at age 40.

Poe's cousin, Neilson Poe, never announced his death publicly. Fewer than 10 people attended the hasty funeral for one of the 19th century's greatest writers. And the injustices piled on. Poe's tombstone was destroyed before it could be installed, when a train derailed and crashed into a stonecutter's yard. Rufus Griswold, a Poe enemy, published a libelous obituary that damaged Poe's reputation for decades.

But on Sunday, Poe's funeral will get an elaborate do-over, with two services expected to draw about 350 people each — the most a former church next to his grave can hold. Actors portraying Poe's contemporaries and other long-dead writers and artists will pay their respects, reading eulogies adapted from their writings about Poe.

"We are following the proper etiquette for funerals. We want to make it as realistic as possible," said Jeff Jerome, curator of the Poe House and Museum.

Advance tickets are sold out, although Jerome will make some seats available at the door to ensure packed houses. Fans are traveling from as far away as Vietnam.

The funeral is arguably the splashiest of a year's worth of events honoring the 200th anniversary of Poe's birth. Along with Baltimore — where he spent some of his leanest years in the mid-1830s — Poe lived in or has strong connections to Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Richmond.

With the funeral angle covered, the Edgar Allan Poe Museum in Richmond staged a re-enactment last weekend of his death. Those with a more academic interest in Poe can attend the Poe Studies Association's annual conference from Thursday through Sunday in Philadelphia.

Visitors in Baltimore for the funeral can enjoy a new exhibit at the Baltimore Museum of Art, "Edgar Allan Poe: A Baltimore Icon," which includes chilling illustrations to "The Raven" by Edouard Manet.

Baltimore has a decided advantage over the other cities that lay claim to Poe, notes BMA director Doreen Bolger. "We have the body," she said.

This week, that's true in more ways than one. Jerome said he's gotten calls from people who thought he was going to exhume Poe's remains and rebury them.

"When they dug up Poe's body in 1875 to move it, it was mostly skeletal remains," Jerome said. "I've seen remains of people who've been in the ground since that time period, and there's hardly anything left."

Instead, Jerome commissioned local special-effects artist Eric Supensky to create an eerily lifelike — or deathlike — mock-up of Poe's corpse.

"I got chills," Jerome said Monday upon seeing the body for the first time. "This is going to freak people out."

The body will lie in state for 12 hours Wednesday at the Poe House, a tiny rowhome in a gritty section of west Baltimore. Visitors are invited to pay their respects.

Following the viewing will be an all-night vigil at Poe's grave at Westminster Burying Ground. Anyone who attends will have the opportunity to deliver a tribute.

On Sunday morning, a horse-drawn carriage will transport the replica of Poe's body from his former home to the graveyard for the funeral.

Actor John Astin, best known as Gomez Addams on TV's "The Addams Family," will serve as master of ceremonies.

"It's sort of a way of saying, 'Well, Eddie, your first funeral wasn't a very good one, but we're going to try to make it up to you, because we have so much respect for you,'" said Astin, who toured as Poe for years in a one-man show.

The service won't be a total lovefest, however. The first eulogy will come from none other than Griswold.

"People are asking me, 'Jeff, why are you inviting him? He hated Poe!'" Jerome said. "The reason is, most of these people defended Poe in response to what he said about Poe's life, so we can't have this service without having old Rufus sitting in the front row, spewing forth his hatred."

Eulogies will follow from actors portraying, among others, Sarah Helen Whitman, a minor poet whom Poe courted after his wife's death, and Walt Whitman, who attended the dedication of Poe's new gravestone in 1875 but didn't feel well enough to speak. Writers and artists influenced by Poe, including Arthur Conan Doyle and Alfred Hitchcock, will also be represented.

Jerome expects to cry — one reason he won't be speaking. Even his rivals are impressed with the scale of the tribute.

"Annoyed as I am with Baltimore sometimes, I have to give them credit," said Philadelphia-based Poe scholar Edward Pettit, who argues his city was of greater importance to Poe's life and literary career. "Baltimore has done an awful lot to maintain the legacy of Poe over the last 100-some years."

NOTE: The Poe House has a variety of paranormal activity. I've been there for a seance several years ago and I have talked to several mediums who have gone through the house. Poe's spirit definitely lingers in the area and a dark cloaked apparition is seen moving along the streets at night. As far as the house, the activity seems to be that of a female spirit who is known to appear during tours on occasion.

THE EDGAR ALLAN POE HOUSE AND MUSEUM - Every city has a great deal of history, but Baltimore in particular has a lot of haunted history, which makes it the perfect place to be on Halloween. For those looking to celebrate Halloween in a more historical way, the Edgar Allan Poe House and Museum holds a special performance in honor of the fall holiday.

The Edgar Allan Poe House and Museum is located in the city, not far from Poe’s actual gravesite. It is a small house that consists of five main rooms: an entranceway room, a kitchen and three bedrooms. Poe’s bedroom is located in the attic of the house, and the tiny home includes no bathrooms of any sort.

“Poe’s room, as well as the house, can be so small because people used to be a lot shorter back when he was alive,” said Jeff Jerome, the curator of the museum. “Poe was 5-foot-8-inches, which was tall back then. The average height of men was 5-foot-5-inches.”

The staircase leading up to Poe's attic can barely fit one person at a time. Everything about the house where Poe grew up reeks of a time when things were different, when Baltimore wasn't even a city.

"When Poe lived here, Baltimore was very country. When he looked out his window he saw fields," said Jerome.

That was back in the 1830s. Today, 175 years later, Baltimore is a completely different place. However, the Poe house still stands and other than a small addition to the kitchen and some missing furniture, it stands in the same condition as it did back when Poe began to write short stories.

This timeline tells more about Poe's history in Baltimore.

The tour of the Edgar Allan Poe House and Museum is mostly self-guided, but Jerome, who has been curator since 1979, is more than willing to answer any questions.

“I just hate when people who have visited the house ask me if I live here. There’s just no way that I could.”

Instead, Jerome resides in Anne Arundel County.

“Many people think that I live and breathe Poe,” he said, “but really, I’m just good at what I do. I don’t think I’ll ever reach a point where I can say that I know all there is to know about Poe. It’s like any job, and I like that I’m always learning new things.”

Jerome was surprised to find out that Poe enjoyed the story of “Frankenstein,” and that he was allergic to perfume.

Before becoming curator of the museum, Jerome did volunteer work for the city.

“I really like Baltimore because of the people here. Everything in this city is nearby, as opposed to a big city like New York,” he said. Jerome also said that the house is interesting for any visitor.

“I don’t suggest kids coming to the Halloween performance though.”

The play can be pretty scary. It’s held in the overcrowded bedroom of Virginia Poe, Poe’s cousin who was also his wife.

“When Poe married his cousin, she was 13 years old and he was seven,” Jerome said. “This may sound weird, but applying today’s social standards to a time when things were different is unfair. Consider that women during this time had a life expectancy of about 25 years, and in Maryland law even today it is legal for cousins to get married.”

People back then married inside of their families because of money.

“It was a way for them to keep their money,” he said. “But Poe didn’t have any money, so in his case it must have been love. Even people that hated Poe could not say anything about him and Virginia because they really were in love.”

The Halloween play does not capture this romance. It is actually an acting out of one of Poe’s poems. This year, local actor Tony Tsendeas performed “A Tell-Tale Heart.” Tsendeas has been performing for the Halloween play on and off for 20 years.

“We started the play in 1983 because people were asking for a Halloween event,” said Jerome. “Since then we have decided that A Tell-Tale Heart,' is the best poem to perform because it’s quick and easy to follow along with.”

Some years, when Tsendeas doesn’t perform, a Poe look-a-like comes in and performs monologues from Poe’s point of view.

“Either way it’s good way to get the local talent out there,” Jerome said.

Every year, the play is performed throughout the day on the Saturday and Sunday before and after Halloween.

As for whether the ghost of Poe comes out during the season, Jerome really has no comment.
