Recent UFO Sightings / Reports / Updates

Sam from New Zealand recently posted the following at his site and reported to MUFON. This UFO photo was captured on 24 Sept 2010, 3:19:04 PM locaql time - shutter speed of 1/1000 of a second. The black and red color object looks similar to the black triangle UFO that visited him many times.

Strange Lights Over Tucson, AZ

KOLD - Our newsroom received calls all night about strange lights in the sky on the southwest side. Was it a UFO over Tucson?

Many people describe them as a 3-5 lights in a triangle shape.

Here's some what people are saying on our Facebook page:

* Armando says, "It's not a plane. Five lights stood still then two lights disappeared and came back to a perfect straight line. Then it disappeared."
* Crystal wrote, "I was freaked out at first too, all my kids gasped. It had us talking about aliens the rest of the way home."
* Angelique said, "What I saw was a plane. It was huge. I saw it three times and it was round and on its side with lights all around it."

KOLD called people all over the place trying to get answers, from Davis-Monthan Air Force Base to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

One spokesman from the Air Guard said that they are performing night flights this week.

Witnesses that talked with KOLD's Dan Marries on the phone insisted the lights they saw were not coming from a plane.

One woman even said the traffic and street lights flickered as it flew overhead. Another said she had to re-set her satellite television after it flew past her house.

Strange Objects Silhouetted by Moon

MUFON CMS - Illinois - 9/23/2010 - (unedited): My wife and I were sitting on our back pation facing due east looking at the very bright moon around 7:45pm to 8:35pm on Sept 23, 2010. There was intermittent cloud cover but during the sighting it was a clear sky.
We noticed around 8:33pm a solid dark mass shaped like a boomerang approaching the moon from the south. It was quite large and was easily seen with the naked eye.
It started at the top view as we looked at the moon from the right and it went across to the left and down in front of the moon and then changed course went up and behind the moon.
In around 10-15 seconds it reappeared back at the right side and below the moon and moved off to the left until we could not see it.
As the first object as moving out of sight a second one approached from the same right south side from the middle to lower half of the moon and moved across in a downward angle to the right.
The second dark solid boomerang object appeared to be exactly like the first one.
I had my camera on hand since I was trying to take photos of the moon since it was so bright and beautiful.
The camera has a video mode and I have a short video of the second object moving from right to left but since the camera is not of a professional quality you can only tell the mass is solid and sort of fuzzy as it moves by.
I tried to get the first object in a video but could not focus well on the moon due to its brightness.
The event last about 2 minutes or so.
We were so excited that we did not think to go get our binoculars until after it was over.
None of my photos turned out very well.
Around the 30-35 second mark you can slightly see a dark mass moving from the right to left at the bottom of the moon.
Wish I had a better video camera and was not so excited that I could hold the camera still.

Garland, Texas - Cigar-Shaped UFO

MUFON Case #25534
Date/Time: 2010-09-23 08:06
City: Garland
State: Texas
Shape: Cigar, Cylinder
Duration: 00:05:00
Distance: Unknown
Location: City
Visibility: Partly Cloudy
Weather: Windy, Medium
Entity Type: None
Summary: Long, gray, cigar/cylindrical shape. No wings, tail,or rudder.

MUFON CMS: This is my second time to report a sighting to MUFON.I observed this one from the exact same location as the first.

Since the first sighting, I tend to keep my eyes to the sky a bit more. Today, it paid off again. I was at work a little early, before 8:00AM CST, and this morning looked to be stormy with the chance of some rain. The clouds were broken, and moving North, with about 60 to 70% broken overcast, and wind from the South about 20 MPH. The clouds were very dark West of my location.

Approximately 8:05 I stepped outside to take a look at the weather, and noticed that commercial flights from DFW and Love Field were being diverted to the North/Northeast around the heavy cloud bank to the West.

I saw a Southwest airlines plane going North East and saw an American Airlines going South toward Love Field or DFW. Both planes were around 2500 to 3000 feet AGL. Both aircraft generated broken contrails due to the fairly cool air and high humidity.

Through a break in the clouds I observed a gray "cigar/cylindrical" shaped vehicle. It's path was to the North West. It had no wings,or tail surfaces, and appeared to be about 2 to 3 times longer than the Southwest airlines plane. I believe the Southwest plane was a Boeing 737-400.

Both of the commercial airliners were moving through the broken cloud layer and the other vehicle was well above the cloud deck, and I estimate it was at 5000 feet AGL. It didn't create any contrail at all.

From my vantage point, the Southwest airplane looked to be about 3/4" long and it's bright orange paint was highly visible. The vehicle I saw looked very similar to the shape of a stretched medicine capsule. Long and thin, and my angle of view was from from its left rear and below. It had no lighting of any kind. No landing lights, marker lights, or anti collision strobe.

I actually had a digital camera on hand, but as luck would have it, the batteries were dead. I had spare batteries, but I didn't manage to change them quickly enough to get any photos before this machine was obscured by clouds. Everything occurred in a matter of 3 to 4 minutes.

I was ecstatic to see something like this again, but when I realized my camera batteries were dead, it was a very quick emotional letdown to say the least. Maybe the third time will be the charm for me.

Capri Residents Take to the Airwaves With Tales of UFOs

marcoislandflorida - How ironic was it that within hours after WGCU public media host Mike Kiniry interviewed MUFON state section director Morgan Beall and two residents from the Isles of Capri that many people reported lights spotted off our coast?

Although most readers are now aware that the mysterious lights seen on Sept. 13 over the Gulf have been attributed to military operations, not all believe that this explanation is totally accurate.

"I'm also investigating this further," said Beall.

"I am seeing some really strange orange lights in V formation heading toward Marco Island," said a neighbor in his phone call to me shortly after 9 p.m. "Have you seen them?"

Although my husband and I have witnessed several strange phenomena in the skies around Capri over the last six months, we missed this one entirely.

This day will long be remembered.

My husband and I were invited to share our UFO sightings on WGCU radio earlier that day along with Beall.

Michael Fauerback, FGCU's resident astronomer, was also a part of the program dedicated to UFOs and other planets.

Under investigation

Beall shared that not only is the Isles of Capri case still under investigation, he also told of several other cases, one of which occurred in 1964 near Cape Canaveral.

John, an Internet listener from Massachusetts, called in to ask about a case in Bonita Springs in May.

"I was fishing with my friend, Gus, about 25 miles off the coast at about 1 p.m. when we saw a shimmering ball-bearing-shaped object about 35 degrees off the horizon.

"It hovered 20 or 30 seconds, and then in a millisecond, sped off and disappeared. I first thought it was an airplane coming into Southwest Regional Airport, but because it was not moving at all, and then sped off in milliseconds, that was unexplainable," the caller said.

Beall is working with boat captains out of Tampa, Fort Myers, Bonita Springs and Sarasota, who overwhelmingly talk about these types of objects seen at eye level or right over their boats. Many are delta-shaped and the size of three to four football fields.

3 lights hovering

Another caller, Juan from Fort Myers, asked Beall to clear up the case reported in The News-Press about 10 years ago. He witnessed three lights that hovered for a while and then split apart and disappeared.

Beall acknowledged that there had been a lot of inquiry about that case.

"Part of my job is to review historical cases like this," Beall said.

Radio host Kiniry asked Beall if there were a single, irrefutable, verifiable case of a strange happening that could not be explained with normal physics.

"Cases where there is radar data are the ones that come to mind," Beall said.

NOTE: Honestly, there are MANY cases in Florida that have been ignored or poorly investigated by MUFON over the years...especially entity related experiences. I receive regular reports of dissatisfaction from witnesses throughout Florida. I have many MUFON members that read this blog (I am also a member) who are aware of my overall thoughts on the organization's direction the past few years. I do want to say that, IMO, there are several state MUFON chapters that stand above the norm and provide excellent service and investigative protocol, in particular chapters in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana...Lon

Fortean / Oddball News - 9/25/2010: Gigantic Emerald, Chinese UFO and Blackbeard Shipwreck

UFO Photographed Over Ancient Chinese City

peopledaily - Two students saw a bright object fly into their camera lens that they thought might be an unidentified flying object (UFO) while taking photos of the city's night views at the 10th Pingyao International Photography Festival held in the ancient city of Pingyao in central China's Shanxi Province on the night of Sept. 22.

The whole incident lasted about 40 minutes. The two sent the photos they took to a reporter on the afternoon of Sept. 23 hoping the mystery could be revealed.

The object in the photo was a sphere with two flickering columns on its two sides. However, it actually could not be seen with the naked eye. The two photographers kept following it and shooting pictures, and were able to take many clear images of the objects.

The object kept appearing and disappearing in the sky from time to time and its position and flying trajectory also kept changing. When some tourists passing by were looking at the pictures taken by the students and comparing them with the sky, they were also surprised.

The two students took about 200 pictures of the UFO. For a period, the object disappeared in their camera lens, but at nearly midnight, it appeared again when one of the students adjusted the time of exposure to 20 seconds and pressed the shutter. However, this time, the columns on its two sides reversed and the object had also moved to a position above the moon.

A group of youth passing by witnessed the whole event with the two students and left their telephone numbers for them. A girl gave them her mobile phone number, and said that she was willing to testify about this incident in the future.

The two students, named Gu Peiwen and Sun Jiali, were admitted to the Department of Photography of the Harbin Normal University's School of Communication in 2008 and are in the same class.

On Sept. 18, the two traveled to Pingyao with their photographs to take part in the 10th Pingyao International Photography Festival. They always go out to photograph local scenery in their spare time. It was Mid-Autumn Festival on Sept. 22 and the moon was bright and beautiful on that night, so they went to Mingqing Street to take pictures of some night views.

Judge To Decide Who Owns £250 Million Bahia Emerald

telegraph - The Bahia Emerald was dug up in Brazil in 2001 and tipped the scales at 840lbs. It is valued at around $400 million (£250 million).

Several people have claimed the suitcase-sized rock since it was found and a small army of lawyers gathered in front of a judge in Los Angeles on Friday for the start of a civil trial over ownership.

The precious stone, which consists of green shards embedded in a host rock, had a circuitous and mysterious journey after vanishing from Brazil.

In 2005 it was in a warehouse in New Orleans and narrowly escaped flooding during Hurricane Katrina.

At one point it was listed for sale on internet auction website eBay for $75 million (£47 million).

It was seized from a gem dealer in Las Vegas and is now in the custody of the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department.

One of the claimants, Tony Thomas, is arguing that he purchased the emerald first from a Brazilian gem dealer for $60,000 (£38,000) shortly after it was excavated.

He claims that, after he arranged to have it shipped home, he was tricked into believing the rock had been stolen so it could be sold to someone else for more money.

His case is being considered by the judge but other interested parties have argued it should be dismissed because the emerald was never delivered to him.

Other ownership claims will be reviewed at a later date. They include a man who says he was retained by the Brazilian owners to sell the emerald.

Another claimant says he received it from a gem dealer as collateral for a shipment of diamonds.

Man Faints With Head In Museum Noose

mcphersonsentinel - A visitor to Boot Hill Museum thought he'd found a photo opportunity Wednesday, but he wound up in the hospital instead. A 69-year-old man from Parks, Ark., discovered that a noose attached to the museum's "Boot Hill Hanging" Tree had slipped out of position Wednesday afternoon, according to Dodge City Police Chief Robin James. The man put his head into the noose and crouched down, increasing tension on the rope.

He was posing for a photo when he passed out and slumped into the noose. The man's wife and another woman were with him, but they were unable to remove him from the noose. They summoned help from others at the museum — including an off-duty police officer from out of town — who were able to get him out of the noose. "If there hadn't been somebody there within a minute or two, there would have been a different result," James said.

The police department learned about the incident shortly before 1 p.m., and an emergency crew was on the scene within minutes after receiving the call. When the police arrived at the scene, the man had just been removed from the noose and was being treated by emergency medical personnel. He was revived and taken to Western Plains Medical Complex, where he was in stable condition.

"It sounds like an oxymoron, but he's probably the luckiest man in Dodge today," James said. "The man was hung from a tree at Boot Hill, Dodge City, Kansas, and he walked away from the hospital without significant injury." He declined to release the man's name since no crime had been committed.

More Evidence of Witchcraft at California Cemetery

valleycentral - Brian Hartung took our Action 4 News cameras to where his father has been buried at the La Havana Cemetery just west of La Joya

While making the small trek to the site an overwhelming stench took over.

"Why would they want to target his grave?" asked Hartung. "A Vietnam Vet's grave."

Hartung pointed to a corpse of a chicken, wrapped in a plastic bag, and placed on his father's grave-already covered in maggots.

"It's supposed to be some kind of sacrilegious---I don't know what the significance of it is--but it's disheartening to find this on my father's grave," said Hartung.

Brian said he is way past angry-he just wants answers.

"What's the purpose," asked Hartung. "This was an honorable vet who served his country proudly-- To come and find this is devastating."

This is not the first time there have been claims of witchcraft at the cemetery.

It was just last week that Action 4 News reported about a local mother who found a shrine to Santa Muerte, a cow's tongue and other objects she considered "evil."

"We saw witchcraft objects," said 'Jane.' "We saw a jaw with candle wax, burned paper, and red chile peppers wrapped in plastic bags."

Who's responsible for them remains a mystery.

But there are some that point to Pagans.

Those who practice said there is a misunderstanding about their religion and what they do.

"There are so many religions out there that intertwine together," said Karl Sawyer. "There are some parts of Christianity that intertwines with Wicca."

Sawyer, who owns The Gallery in McAllen, said Wicca is an Earth-based religion and not about casting spells to harm others.

"The religion has to do with worshiping a god and goddess," Sawyer said.

Researchers Resume Hunt For Artifacts At Blackbeard Shipwreck Site

enctoday - As underwater archaeologists dive to recover 300-year-old artifacts from the shipwreck presumed to Blackbeard’s flagship, the effort to keep the public a part of the project are all 21st century.

A six-week dive expedition at the Queen Anne’s Revenge shipwreck site began this week, and anyone interested in following its progress can do so via the Facebook page Blackbeard’s-Queen Anne’s Revenge. Full information on the project is also available at the website

After a day of field preparations, a Wednesday afternoon Facebook post announced the biggest news of the expedition: “Returning to USCG Fort Macon. Still need to get a mooring in but unit grids are set. The first excavation since fall 2008 will start first thing (Thursday) morning.”

The 2010 expedition will continue through October. While small dives on the wreck, such as a three-day dive in May, have allowed researchers to monitor and conduct limited work on site, this expedition marks the first excavation in two years.

According to information on the QAR website, objectives of this dive include the excavation and full recovery of artifacts from approximately 37, 5-foot by5-foot archaeological units in the midship and forward hold area.

While little wet storage space at the QAR conservation lab limits the full recovery of the ship’s largest artifacts — such as its anchors and cannons — there are plans to move one of the ship’s largest main deck cannons from its current location to the large artifact holding area on site.

In other activities planned, members of the expedition will take readings from anchors and cannon already undergoing corrosion treatment underwater and attach the aluminum-alloy anodes to begin treatment on others.

The anodes are used to change the electrochemical process that corrodes iron in saltwater, reducing or even reversing the amount of salts absorbed by the iron objects.

By beginning the process underwater, it can save time and space in the conservation lab.

“It’s imperative that we stop the damaging effects of salt water on these treasures. This is a good alternative to help stabilize them when laboratory space is not available,” stated QAR Archaeological Field Director Chris Southerly in a news release announcing the dive.

A dozen cannons, which range from 6 feet to 8 feet in length and weighing 700 pounds to a ton, will undergo the treatment along with three large anchors. The anchors are 11 feet to 13 feet long and weigh an estimated 1,800 pounds.

To date, more than 700,000 artifacts have been recovered. Many are still undergoing conservation while others are exhibited at the N.C. Maritime Museum in Beaufort, the repository for QAR artifacts.

The expedition is being led by the N.C. Underwater Archaeology Branch with team efforts including NOAA, the N.C. Maritime Museum and Friends of the Queen Anne’s Revenge. The dive expedition is made possible by a grant from NOAA and the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation as well as support from the N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries, the U.S. Coast Guard at Fort Macon, Fort Macon State Park, Nautilus Productions and Discovery Diving.

Legendary Humanoids: Nephilim, Evil Behemoths

Some mythical creatures have their origin in tradition and tales from the distant past. However, each culture is associated with a multitude of interesting and odd creatures, many of these beings are humanoids. One of these legendary humanoids is the Nephilim.

The word or term 'Nephilim' appears twice in the Hebrew Bible, both in the Torah. The first is Genesis 6:1-4, immediately before the Noah's ark story: When men began to increase in number on the earth and daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful, and they married any of them they chose. Then the LORD said, "My Spirit will not contend with man forever, for he is mortal; his days will be a hundred and twenty years." The Nephilim were on the earth in those days—and also afterward—when the sons of God went to the daughters of men and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown.

The second is Numbers 13:32-33, where the Hebrews have seen giants in Canaan: And they spread among the Israelites a bad report about the land they had explored. They said, "The land we explored devours those living in it. All the people we saw there are of great size. We saw the Nephilim there (the descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim). We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them."

'Nephilim' is rendered fallen, or possibly feller: a tyrant or bully. Several English translations rendered the word "giants", but of late translators seem to prefer leave it untranslated. The "giants" translation may have come from the Greek old testament where "nephilim" was "gegantes" which looks like "giant" but in modern Greek would be "titans". In Greek mythos, the titans were the supernaturally powerful offspring of gods and humans.
Some biblical researchers contend that the “Sons of God” were fallen angels who mated with human females and/or possessed human males and then mated with human females. These unions resulted in offspring, the Nephilim, that were “heroes of old, men of renown” It is also most important to note that they are mentioned almost simultaneous to God's statement that He would destroy the earth by flood, and it seems from this association that their effect upon mankind was one of the primary justifications that brought the destruction.

I read a commentary that stated that if this were fact, that the Nephilim had mated with a variety of species, then we would now have a variety non-humans among us. Each has their own special traits. One example is Vampires. They were created when Nephilim fused their DNA with vampire bats. Vampire bats come out at night when the sunlight is dim as sun hurts their eyes. Like the Vampire bat, human vampires are adversely affected by sunlight and crave blood. Many true vampires, crave blood from the time of their birth. Many have donors that give blood to them and keep them well supplied. Blood often restores them to full health and well being.

Another example given was Reptilians, that are non-humans that can shapeshift. This means that they can alter their DNA electrically to transform from a human form to one that is reptilian. They have to concentrate to keep their human shape, if not they turn into reptilian humanoid.

These were not the only examples given. Some involved malformation, birth defects, races, genetic differences, etc. For this reason, it is understandable why the Nazis made determined efforts to find evidence of Nephilims in order to twist the legends to conform with their barbaric beliefs.

We have all seen the photos of giant skeletons being unearthed as well as the urban legends told in regards to superhumans. But there was a strange incident that was disclosed a few years ago that just seemed to fade off without any explanation or followup.

In 2005, there were reports that a Giant Man was killed in the Afghanistan mountains. This man was described as pale white, 15 foot tall, 1100 pound, six fingered and six toed who was feeding on human parts. It was reported that the Giant Man was killed by US Military after he reportedly attacked by throwing large rocks at them. The corpse of this Giant Man was flown to Germany for autopsy according to witnesses. Apparently the information was presented on the Coast to Coast AM show and discussed by George Noory and Steve Quayle. Since that time there has been little mention of this incident.

Could this Giant Man have been a real being and/or had any relation to a Nephilim? Are there Nephilim living, thriving and breeding among us? Is there any connection with 2012 and the supposed 'end times' theories? There is a very good page on this subject at - LEVIATHAN CHAINED: The Legend of the Nephilim and the Cthulhu Mythos.

In the H.G. Wells book The Time Traveler, he describes a race of monsters that live in the earth and maintain a secret society that was technologically far more advanced than the surface people. As well, these underground humanoids fed on the surface dwellers. There is a story by a Native American woman who stated her tribe was plagued by "giant" people that would steal their dead to eat them. They were red haired and lived in caves. In the end the tribe burned these giants to death.

There are many stories in many cultures that refer to colossal beings in their midst. For us, it's simply a matter of what to believe.

Legendary Humanoids: Nephilim, Evil Behemoths

Photo: Mothman Seen In Nuremberg, Germany?

yorkpress - A woman from York captured an unexplained object in her holiday snaps this month, and wants your help identifying it.

Abbey Linfoot, 22, was on a European holiday with her boyfriend when she took a photo of this street in Nuremberg.

When she looked at the photo later, she saw something she couldn’t explain, high above the buildings.

“I was taking lots of photos to show people where we’d been, but when I got back into the car I noticed there was something on this one,“ said Abbey, who is currently studying at Newcastle University “I just though, ‘What it that? That looks weird’, and couldn’t work out what it was.”

Abbey has shown the picture to friends and family, including a photography student, and nobody has yet come up with a clear explanation.

“I thought it looked like a cherub,” said Bev, Abbey’s mother.

“I also thought it looked a bit like a naked Buzz Lightyear toy, but could be a bee or an insect or something.”

Looking into the region online, Bev found there had been a fatal crash at an airshow near Nuremberg earlier this summer.

“There was a crash on September 5 where one person was killed and nearly 40 injured.

It’s really odd,” said Bev.

So what do you think - is this a trick of the light, a partly-invisible insect, a naked space ranger or something else?

NOTE: not sure what to make of this but the influx of cellphone camera image overlays, especially in Europe, has me wondering.I attempted to pull up image info but there is nothing there but the link source. Should we keep an eye on Nuremberg in the near future? It'll be interesting to see if other sightings are reported...Lon

Fortean / Oddball News - 9/24/2010: Invasive Chipmunks, Witches / Wizards and Pain Relief

Witches, Wizards Banned From Advertising In Russia - Russian lawmakers have backed a bill that bans witches and wizards from advertising in the media amid concerns that they give false hope to cancer victims.

Nearly one million practitioners of the occult advertise their services in Russia, offering to cure anything from cancer to missing husbands for a fee, London's Daily Telegraph reported today.

According to one report, almost one in five Russians consult the self-professed "faith healers," in a trend that has alarmed lawmakers.

"Citizens, if they have the money, are even sometimes promised elevation to a new level of evolution,” lawmaker Tatyana Yakovleva told the daily Rossiiskaya Gazeta newspaper.

“Only last year in Moscow 300,000 people turned to the services of wizards and healers according to the Interior Ministry.”

Cancer specialists have warned that patients waste valuable time on consulting with witches or wizards, only to be told that there is nothing that can be done when the client runs out of money for a "cure."

The bill would require anyone claiming to be able to solve people’s health problems to get a licence to operate from the health ministry. It needs two more votes to become law.

Siberian Chipmunks Invade Ireland

irishtimes - Wildlife experts have issued an “invasive species alert” following sightings of Siberian chipmunks on the loose in Co Waterford. The striped rodents, native to northern Asia, are regarded as a “significant threat” to the survival of the Irish red squirrel, which is already imperilled by the grey squirrel.

Colette O’Flynn, manager of the National Invasive Species Database, explained that “Co Waterford remains a stronghold for red squirrels as the invasive grey squirrel has not as yet, penetrated into the heart of the county” but the chipmunk has “similar habitats and food requirements”.

She said the authorities were “alarmed” by sightings of chipmunks last month in Colligan Woods near Dungarvan. It is believed the creatures were bought as pets and escaped or were deliberately released into the wild. The first sighting occurred on August 10th when a member of the public spotted and photographed a chipmunk crossing a road.

The sighting sparked concern among officials at the National Biodiversity Data Centre and the National Parks and Wildlife Service. There was relief three days later when a dead chipmunk was found in the area. Officials hoped the sighting was “a one off”. However, a fresh sighting occurred on August 15th when a local resident, Dina Walshe saw and photographed another chipmunk whose behaviour suggested it might have been a former pet “as it did not shy away from close human contact”.

She submitted photographs to the National Biodiversity Data Centre, which then issued the invasive species alert. The Siberian chipmunk (Eutamias sibiricus) is normally found in woodlands in northern Russia, China, Korea and Japan and is distinguished by five longitudinal stripes along its back. The rodent can grow to a length of 25cm and lives on a diet of shrubs, mushrooms, berries, birds and other small animals.

Chipmunks can spread rabies and also carry the ticks which harbour Lyme disease. In Russia, they are regarded as pests which cause widespread destruction of nut and grain crops and can also threaten ground-nesting birds.

Ms O’Flynn confirmed it was “illegal to release any non-native species into the wild in Ireland without a licence” and that it was also “cruel to release a pet into the wild”. She pointed out that “Siberian chipmunks do not make ideal pets” as they “do not suit confinement and are difficult to contain”.

She also appealed to people who spot a chipmunk in the wild to take a photograph if possible and report the sighting. Ms O’Flynn added, “during 2009 and 2010, we have seen a number of species associated with the pet trade end up in the wild in Ireland”.

American Angler Bitten By Fish With Human-Like Teeth

orangeAn angler had a shock - when a mystery fish bit him back with distinctly human-looking teeth.

Frank Yarborough was fishing in Lake Wylie, South Carolina, when he hooked the fish which was 5lb and nearly 1ft 8ins long.

Assuming it was a catfish, he scooped his hand in the water to pull it out, only to find his fingers clamped between what appeared to be a set of dentures.

Robert Stroud, a freshwater fisheries biologist with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, has confirmed that samples from the fish have been sent off to determine the fish's species.

Stroud told WBTV: "This fish is more than likely a common species of Pacu, Colossama macropomum, originating from the Amazon River basin of South America and is quite common in the aquarium trade."

Pacus, a distant relative of the piranha, is a warm water fish, and not native to Lake Wylie. Biologists believe it was probably raised in an exotic fish tank and released when it got too large for the tank.

The fish is currently in a freezer in Mr Yarborough's Clover home, but unsurprisingly he has no plans to cook his catch.

Woman Attempts to Kill the Anti-Christ...Goes to Jail

theweeklyvice - Sandra Clanton, a 39-year-old Elmhurst woman, was arrested Saturday night after she allegedly attempted to kill her 9-month-old grandson because he is the anti-Christ.

According to DuPage police, Clanton placed her 9-month-old grandson on the counter next to the kitchen sink and then apparently lost her mind.

Investigators say Clanton slammed the babies head against the counter and then cut his face with a knife.

DuPage police say the child's mother and a friend were in the home during the attack and they called police.

When investigators questioned Clanton, she reportedly told them that the baby was the anti-Christ.

Clanton was transported to a hospital under police watch. While there, Clanton allegedly tried to commit suicide by slitting her wrists with a plastic cap from a bottle.

Police say that Clanton then repeatedly banged her head on a table when they told her to stop.

Clanton was transported from the hospital to the DuPage County Jail and charged with attempted first degree murder, aggravated battery to a child, and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. Her bond was set at $2 million.

Have Pain? Touch It Away

sciencedaily - There may be a very good reason that people naturally clutch their hand after receiving an injury. A new report published online Sept. 23 in Current Biology shows that self-touch offers significant relief for acute pain under experimental conditions. The researchers suggest that the relief comes from a change in the brain's representation of the rest of the body.

"Pain is quite an important, but also complicated, experience and can be caused in many different ways," said Patrick Haggard of University College London. "We show that levels of acute pain depend not just on the signals sent to the brain, but also on how the brain integrates these signals into a coherent representation of the body as a whole."

Haggard and his colleague Marjolein Kammers, also of University College London, made the discovery by studying the effects of self-touch in people who were made to feel pain using an experimental condition known as the thermal grill illusion (TGI). "The TGI is one of the best-established laboratory methods for studying pain perception," Haggard explained. "In our version, the index and ring fingers are placed in warm water and the middle finger in cold water. This generates a paradoxical feeling that the middle finger is painfully hot." That's ideal because it allows scientists to study the experience of pain without actually causing any injury to those who participate in the studies.

When TGI was induced in an individual's two hands and then the three fingers of one hand were touched to the same fingers on the other hand immediately afterwards, the painful heat experienced by the middle finger dropped by 64 percent compared to a condition without self-touch. That relief didn't come when only one hand was placed under TGI conditions. Partial self-touch in which only one or two fingers were pressed against each other didn't work either. Nor did it work to press the affected hand against an experimenter's hand that had also been warmed and cooled in the same way.

"In sum," the researchers wrote, "TGI was reduced only when thermosensory and tactile information from all three fingers was fully integrated. That is, TGI reduction required a highly coherent somatosensory pattern, including coherence between tactile and thermal patterns and coherence of stimuli between the two hands."

Haggard said that earlier studies of chronic pain had suggested the importance of body representation in the experience of pain. For example, the phantom pain that is often felt following amputation of a limb appears to lessen with time as the brain converges on an updated representation of the body. Haggard said the new findings extend the important role of body representation to acute pain and may lead to a better understanding of the brain mechanisms involved in chronic pain as well.

The findings might be put to practical use, the researchers say. "Our work suggests that therapies aimed at strengthening the multisensory representation of the body may be effective in reducing pain," Haggard said.

OWU's Legends, Ghosts and History

Image of an apparition captured at Ohio Wesleyan University - John Ciochetty

Sometimes considered one of the most haunted colleges in America, Ohio Wesleyan University certainly has a variety of spirits to choose from. Public Safety Officer, local historian and author John Ciochetty has been documenting paranormal events at the OWU and the surrounding area for almost a decade.

Ciochetty said Elliot Hall, Stuyvesant, Monnett Gardens, the Peace & Justice House, Edwards Gymnasium and University Hall all have ghosts. He said he first became involved with the ghosts on campus when he arrived in 2001.

"I got here and I noticed a lot of things were out of place," Ciochetty said. "I saw an apparition near Elliot Hall and went to the archives where I discovered similar reports."

Ciochetty said the ghost he witness lived when General William Henry Harrison had an outpost near Elliot. He said a fight between two soldiers supposedly resulted in the death of one, who was placed in a tanning vat by the murderer.

Ciochetty said the University Hall hauntings include a hand on the shoulder from a fatherly ghost and a woman chastising children in the hallways. Also present is the little boy who fell from the balcony and died. Ciochetty said this little boy now darts around the aisles of Gray Chapel.

Ciochetty said one of the more famous ghosts at OWU is that of Mrs. Perkins in P&J.

"Once my name was being mentioned, but no one was there," Ciochetty said. "It was very eerie."

He said Mrs. Perkins passed away in room 207, the quad, of P&J. According to Ciochetty, a moderator once called him because she felt a presence in the house when she was by herself. Ciochetty said he has a recording of the voice of Mrs. Perkins.

"I went to a house meeting once and played back the CD," Ciochetty said. "One of the students became visibly upset when he recognized the voice."

Senior Jack Schemenauer, the student in question, said his encounter with Mrs. Perkins happened during his first semester of residence at P&J. Schemenauer said several students were thinking of bringing a medium to contact Mrs. Perkins when he heard her voice late one night.

"I heard someone whisper, 'don't do it,' to me," he said. "So I freaked out and couldn't sleep for the rest of the night."

Schemenauer said he forgot about the incident until Ciochetty came to their house meeting and played the tape much later.

"I freaked the f*** out, teared up and said that was the voice, that was the voice," Schemenauer said.

"Her voice was so creepy. It was really soft and scary at the same time."

Senior Will Condit, another resident of P&J, also had an eerie experience in his house. Condit said he was returning from the library late one night and all of the lights were off when he entered the house and went upstairs.

"I could see the reflection of the computer's blue screensaver on the wall, but then it went blank for one second," Condit said. "It was as if the blue slid off the side of the monitor and was replaced by darkness."

Condit said he then looked down the stairwell and saw something strange.

"I could see some sort of shadowy something at the foot of the stairs," he said. "I watched the shape slide around the edge of the staircase before running to my room." - The OWU Transcript

John Ciochetty notes in 'The Ghosts of Stuyvesant Hall and Beyond':

"One building stands our predominantly as one of the symbols representing the prestige and excellence of an institution often referred to as "The Harvard of the Midwest." This structure can be located on a small hill overlooking West William Street in Delaware, Ohio. In 1931, it was built exclusively for women students. Woman such as Wendie Malick, an Emmy award winning actress of television, film and screen, once resided there.

Stuyvesant Hall

"Stuyvesant Hall was the dream and aspiration of Frank Stuyvesant. His life was extraordinary. His father fought in the American Civil War under the command of Major General William Sherman. During the war, he was captured by Confederate forces and incarcerated. At that time, conditions at prisons were so horrendous that normal healthy men died in captivity or were on the verge of death by the time they were released after the war. Frank's father never regained his youthful vitality and strength by the time he was released. At the age of twelve, Frank was given the task of being the sole provider of his family and had to leave school. He began selling carriages and farm equipment. In the early years of the automobile industry, Frank exhibited superior skills in the area of sales and blew out the competition. His impeccable knowledge of human nature and his desire to meet the needs of the consumer brought him success in the business world as a distributor for the Hudson Motor Company. The accumulation of enormous wealth was the result of his honesty and the strict adherence to the American work ethic.

"Frank and his wife, Mary, met E.G. Guthery, a graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University, and his daughter, Katherine, and through this new relationship, the Stuyvesant's developed an interest in the university. They pondered what to do with their wealth and how it could benefit others. As Frank put it, "The older I grow, the less I find money means to me. I wanted this money to be helping somebody and I wanted that to happen while I could see the results." Frank never achieved true fulfillment. He wished that he had the chance to be able to continue his education. He admired those persons whose collegiate education created an opened door to rich and rewarding experiences in life. He made a decision to use his fortune to assist young men and women at the university.

"During the 1920s, freshmen women were residing in military barrack style buildings. There was a definite need for a residence hall strictly designed for women. In 1930, Frank and Mary donated $400,000 dollars to have a dormitory built of colonial brick in a Georgian style of architecture. The structure would house up to 200 women and built in the shape of the letter "E" with a bell tower containing a carillon of chimes which was located in the center. The bell tower set Stuyvesant Hall out from every other building on the university campus. It was the center of attention. The tower and its' fifteen bells were a memorial to Frank Stuyvesant who passed away before he was able to see his dream realized. The bells were produced by the McShane Bell Foundry of Baltimore, Maryland. They could be played from an electric keyboard located on the first floor in the lobby near the office of the headmistress or by hand and foot levers in the tower. The largest bell weighs 2,200 pounds and the smallest weighs 325 pounds. The bells would be rung at precisely 5:30 PM for dinner in the hall's cafeteria and at 9 PM signaling curfew for all women residents. The dormitory would be valued at nearly one million dollars. It was entirely fireproofed with the most up to date furnishings and equipment of its time. The hall was built with Simmons steel.

Ohio Wesleyan University was founded in 1842 by Methodist leaders and Central Ohio residents as a nonsectarian institution. This engraving is of Merrick Hall in 1873.

"In the 1980's, students have witnessed a faceless woman with long flowing hair and wearing a long white dress walk on the ground floor near the laundry room between the hours of 3:30 and 4:00 am. The same apparition was seen again sitting on top of a dresser. When the student asked her to leave, she turned toward him and he noticed that she had no face.

"On December 1, 2000, a young man went to the laundry room around 3:11 am to retrieve some of his clothes from the dryer. He noticed a woman bending over to pick up some of her clothing she dropped on the floor. When he offered to assist her, she turned around and vanished into thin air.

"The most talked about legend on campus revolves around the sealed room on the ground floor. In the 1950's, a young lady occupied a room on the west end of the ground floor beside the laundry room. She was an honor student and stayed to herself most of the time. She did not associate with the other students very much except during her classes and at meal time. During the second month of her third year at the university she began missing classes, which was completely out of her character. Her fellow floor residents wondered if she went home for the semester due to an illness or family matters. No one was seen coming or going from her room for a week. In fact, nothing was heard coming from her room until the residents were woken up by a series of blood curling screams. Everyone came out of their rooms. The headmistress and dormitory officials were dispatched to the scene. Some of the residents called their boyfriends just in case they were needed to break down the door. It was total chaos!! Once entry was made into the room, the young woman was found sitting on the floor next to her bed rocking back and forth mumbling profusely. Various papers, books and clothing were found strung everywhere in the room. After the woman was assisting to her bed by the headmistress, she screamed that "they were out to get her!!" After she was able to compose herself, she explained to everyone that she could not sleep for several nights due to manifestations of apparitions which invited her to join them on the other side. The young woman admitted contemplating suicide several times during the week. A makeshift noose made from linen sheets was found underneath the bed. She withdrew from the university due to medical reasons.

"Since that time onward, any student assigned to the room requested to move to other rooms within the hall or to other dormitories after staying there for two weeks. The main reason for their requests centered on bizarre and unexplained events. As time went on, rumors about ghosts circulated throughout campus. To put these rumors to rest once and for all, one of the university administrators volunteered to stay in the room for an entire evening. Residents observed the administrator enter the room. The room was silent for the entire night. The next morning, at the crack of dawn, the official came out of the room without saying a word. One of the student residents walking down the hall at that time met up with the official. She noticed that the administrator's face was white as a sheet. The official made his way to the headmistress' office for approximately ten minutes and left the building thereafter. A work order was written up for the maintenance department to permanently seal the room."

Ciochetty notes that "for many years, students have attempted to locate the room. It has been speculated that it was located next to the men's shower and bathroom next to the laundry room. Others have theorized that the entrance of the room was covered over by drywall which has made it difficult to find. Some believe that the room no longer exists and that part of it was renovated to make way for the shower and bathroom. It should be told, however, that students have felt the presence of something or someone watching them in the restroom in addition to witnessing black shadowy figures move along the walls.

"Since that time onward, any student assigned to the room requested to move to other rooms within the hall or to other dormitories after staying there for two weeks. The main reason for their requests centered on bizarre and unexplained events. As time went on, rumors about ghosts circulated throughout campus. MUFON CMS: 'Rod' Shaped High Altitude UFO - Connecticut

Above - the enlarged and enhanced images. Below - the original screen captures

MUFON CMS - 9/21/2010 - Connecticut - (unedited): I often watch sunrise, when it is not obscured by clouds. Today was a particularly clear morning. I glanced out the window & saw what I first assumed was a spider web but it seemed very far off. I moved to another room to get another view, I could tell that this was very far off and likely in the stratosphere. It remained directly above the sunrise. I also thought it was a contrail. However it did not dissipate in the manner which a contrail even a "persistent" contrail have in the past.

I observed this through a window of the second floor of my home. The screen had been removed and I was filming while physically holding my camera outside.

For the most part, it was difficult to see without looking through the camera because of the brightness of the sun. However, at around 10:00, it was visible with the naked eye. It almost seemed to project itself forward or backward in order to move but stayed at an angle. It appeared to be extremely large/long. Sometimes it appeared a a row of balls and other times it appeared smooth, a couple of times, I witnessed it change to an orange/red color, which seemed to flow through the rod-like structure. video Footage and digital photographs were taken on a Sony Handycam with 20X optical zoom, A digital Finepix camera and a Cannon Rebel camera with a 300mm lens.

There was one other witness to this, which was my husband, he also watched this for several minutes and does not agree that this was any of the things I initially thought it was.

Additionally, it appeared that there was a lot of "activity" around this rod-like structure but I am unsure of the nature of these quick moving objects. Some did seem to be coming out of the structure. I was very overwhelmed by the whole thing and would have rather that something would happen to reveal that there was a simple benign explanation for what we were seeing and would have preferred that it would have just gone away. Regardless, I could not take my eyes off of it, until it was finally gone.

In this video loads of white orbs are shooting into and out of this semi cloaked craft, awesome, but to see them better pause and speed up every so often.

NOTE: Below is a video about the 'rods' phenomenon. Frankly. 99.9% of these 'rods' are flying insects caught on slow speed cameras. But occasionally a high altitude dark or light colored 'rod' will be seen. This Connecticut report is interesting since the enhanced screen captures depict something other than an insect or thin cloud formation. Also, there seem to be smaller anomalies in the vicinity of this rod-shaped object. I was able to capture one of these anomalies from the original footage and enlarge it. The witness stated they saw quick moving 'activity' around the object...Lon

Fortean / Oddball News - 9/23/2010: Russian Bigfoot, UFOs vs Nukes and Nick Redfern Interview

New Bigfoot Expedition Underway in Southern Siberia

itar-tass - A fourth science expedition has left for Mountain Shoria (a territory in Southern Siberia, east of the Altai Mountains) earlier on Wednesday in search of any traces of the abominable snowman. Taking part in the expedition will be the director of the International Center for Hominology, Igor Burtsev, deputy president of the public association Kosmopoisk, Vasily Dovgoshei, History Doctor Valery Kimeyev and other experts.

As Igor Burtsev, a participant in several previous expeditions, has told Itar-Tass, the search will last for about ten days. The experts are determined to find irrefutable evidence the Bigfoot (also known by the names of Sasquatch and Yeti) does exist.

“During the previous expedition a year ago I saw markers (half-broken branches) the creature uses to mark the controlled territory,” Burtsev said.

“Mountain Shoria is a perfect place for yetis. It is a sparsely populated, mountainous area, where there are many caves, it is relatively warm and there are sources of pure fresh water. In the mountain rivers fish is in abundance and hunting in the forests must be really good. I reckon the Bigfoot likes to go fowling. In the woods I have found several artifacts to confirm my theory of mine. This time I plan to find the Bigfoot’s shelter and even try to contact the creature."

The head of the Tashtagol District, Vladimir Makuta, says that the first mention of Bigfoot’s presence in Mountain Shoria dates back to 1980. The creatures seem to have gone especially active over the past three years.

LHC 'may have replicated conditions that existed after Big Bang'

dailymail - Scientists say the Large Hadron Collider may be on the verge of its first scientific breakthrough.

The $10billion atom smasher under the Swiss-French border appears to have recreated at a small level the matter that existed in the first moments of the universe.

Scientists say colliding particles seem to be creating 'hot dense matter' that would have existed microseconds after the Big Bang and might hold the key for understanding how the liquids, gases and solids of our universe were created.

The LHC in a tunnel at CERN. Scientists may have recreated conditions moments after the Big Bang

The Hadron Collider's CMS detector is reported to have seen 'new and interesting effects' which show the paths that particles take after impact.

Raju Venugopalan, a senior scientist at the U.S. Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York, said Wednesday that physicists 'are very excited' by the European lab's results.

CERN says the correlations bear similarities to studies with larger particle structures conducted at the U.S. Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York, and that they reveal how some particles are 'intimately linked in a way not seen before in proton collisions.'

'We are very excited,' said Raju Venugopalan, a senior Brookhaven scientist. He said that the data showed 'for the first time' that protons have quantum properties that can be enhanced in collisions.

Scientists say the effects they are observing are 'obscure.' But they are possibly a key piece in CERN's ultimate quest of answering the great questions of particle physics, such as the presumed existence of antimatter and the Higgs boson.

The Higgs boson is sometimes referred to as the 'God particle' because scientists theorise that it gives mass to other particles and thus to all objects and creatures in the universe.

The laboratory's spokesman, James Gillies, said the experiments showed the Large Hadron Collider 'is starting to deliver' after a patchy start that included costly repairs and upgrades.

'Up to now, we were remeasuring old physics,' he said. 'Now we're moving to new and better things.'

Even if the latest data fail to produce immediately useful knowledge, the tests show the collider's unprecedented capacity for discovery, said Joe Incandela, a senior CERN scientist.

Venugopalan said CERN's results show how extremely 'tiny and normally short-lived quantum fluctuations of protons are frozen in place.' This is because of Einstein's special relativity and generates remarkable results, he said.

The LHC, a 17-mile looped tunnel which creates mini-Big Bangs by smashing together particles, is currently colliding particles at around half its maximum energy level -- 7 million million electron volts, or 7 TeV.

It plans to increase this to 14 TeV from 2013, coming closer to the conditions in which the universe was created 13.7 billion years ago.

Woman Cut In Half To Clear Out Cancer

winnipegfreepress - Manitoban Janis Ollson and family are in magazine ads for the esteemed Mayo Clinic for a very good reason: she's the first person surgeons cut in half, removed much of a cancerous midsection, then put back together with a happy ending.

On Friday, the Balmoral, Man., woman was at her daughter's school to talk to students about Sunday's Terry Fox Run, and how funds raised for cancer research are keeping people like her alive.

Janis Ollson's first surgery to remove the cancer, her leg, part of her pelvis and lower spine took 20 hours, 12 specialists and 20 units of blood. She spent a week out of it and then had a second surgery to put her back together. That took eight hours and more than 240 staples. The surgeon put her back together, attaching the bone to her spine with pins and screws, close to her centre, almost like a pogo stick.

Since her groundbreaking surgery, three other patients have had it. Only one has survived, a young woman in Ohio. Ollson mentors her from afar and benefits from having someone to talk to who gets her daily reality.

"There was no one else like me until she came along... It makes me proud to be a survivor and doing so well I can help others."
No one's dissing Canada

Manitoba Health covered Ollson's expenses at the Mayo Clinic.

She's grateful for the Canadian health-care system and that it collaborated with the Mayo Clinic to save her life.

"We could've easily lost everything we owned if we had to pay for this ourselves."

The Ollsons agreed to be featured in an ad for the Mayo Clinic that appeared in Maclean's, Readers Digest and other mags only if it didn't "diss" Canada, Ollson said.

"It wasn't like they were trying to get us as Canadians to advertise to other Canadians that the Mayo is better than Canada. We wouldn't support anything like that."

Three years ago, the 31-year-old was pregnant with her second child and had been suffering years of horrible back pain when Canadian doctors diagnosed her with bone cancer, chondrosarcoma.

Sarcoma experts in Toronto said they'd literally have to cut her in half to get at the untreatable cancer, remove her leg, lower spine and half her pelvis.

The problem was they didn't know how to put her back together again.

They certainly didn't know how she would have a decent quality of life. They consulted with the Mayo Clinic and the Rochester, Minn., doctors decided to try something new.

Ollson became the first person to receive a "pogo stick" rebuild, with her one good leg fused to her body with the reshaped bone from the amputated leg.

Three years later, she is alive and kickin' -- snowmobiling and grocery shopping -- with her husband and two kids on their half acre in Balmoral.

"Where we live, we use ATVs and snowmobiles. I use my ATV to take my daughter to school... There really isn't a whole lot that stops me," she said.

"I don't like to be left out."

Today, she's cancer-free, although she lives with the knowledge it could return at any time.

She uses a prosthetic pelvis and leg, wheelchair, crutches or walker, depending on what she's doing and where she's going.

"I have no problem getting around. If I need to, I'll crawl (up stairs) or scooch like a kid," she said.

"I don't want people to think 'we can't invite the Ollsons because they can't get in here with a wheelchair.' "

"I want to live life to its fullest."

In 2007, her life nearly ended.

"I had pain in my lower back with the first pregnancy. I just thought it was the pregnancy, as did my doctors." She had to stop working when she was eight months pregnant because of the pain.

"After my daughter was born, I still struggled, but it seemed to get better...

"A few years later, I got pregnant with my son. The pain started to increase. I was waddling and hurting by three months."

At five months, the pain was so intense she couldn't work at her office job.

The non-smoker, who wouldn't take any medications or even dye her hair during her first pregnancy, was at the maximum dose of Tylenol 3 during that agonizing second pregnancy.

"Nothing was working."

At seven months, the pain was so bad she couldn't drive. Her suffering was so severe, she asked her doctor if her baby could be delivered prematurely.

"That wasn't a rational thought for me," she said. "By that point, I was quite desperate for some type of relief."

She was told there was nothing more they could do.

"I went back home feeling very alone and misunderstood. I didn't think people believed me. I knew it was a whole lot worse than anyone thought."

She tried a machine that uses electrical pulses to deal with the pain, as well as hot packs and cold packs. She tried sleeping sitting in her kitchen with her head on the table. "Sitting was better than lying."

In February 2007, the pain kept her awake all night. The next morning, she had to crawl across the kitchen floor to get daughter Braxtyn a drink.

Ollson realized she'd hit her breaking point: "I can't take another day, another minute. I'm done."

Her husband took her to hospital in Winnipeg and she refused to leave until she was admitted. A specialist and residents saw her and concluded she had pregnancy sciatica -- caused by pressure on the sciatic nerve. They prescribed morphine to dull the pain enough for her to sleep.

No one suspected she had a form of bone cancer that rarely affects young women -- until she awoke and talked to a neurologist, mentioning in passing she could no longer stand on her tippy toes on her left side.

"It was a huge red flag" for the specialist, she said.

Immediately, she had an MRI and although she was told the results would take a few days, a doctor was in her hospital room to talk about the results the same day. She and her husband were told there was "something" on her lower spine, but no one could say if it was cancer.

Then came an excruciating two-day wait.

Finally, her obstetrician delivered the news: It was probably sarcoma.

But no one could be sure of that without a needle biopsy, which couldn't be done while she was pregnant.

Two weeks later, after her healthy son, Leiland, was delivered by C-section Feb. 21, 2007, the needle biopsy was performed. But that was inconclusive, even with sarcoma specialists in Toronto and at the Mayo Clinic weighing in. It was only after she travelled to Toronto for a biopsy that it was confirmed: a chondrosarcoma, the size of a Pizza Pop, one of the largest the experts had ever seen.

Chemotherapy and radiation couldn't help. The cancer had spread through several bones, her pelvis, lower spine and into a lot of muscle tissue. Her only chance for survival was to remove it.

But removal, specialists said, might not be the best option. The Toronto specialist said he could remove the tumour but didn't know if she could be put back together. Without a lower spine, half her pelvis and a leg, there was nothing to attach her remaining healthy leg to.

"I was in complete shock. I felt like I was going to throw up," she said.

A young man with a similar sarcoma decided not to have it removed so he could live like a normal person until it killed him, the doctor told her.

"Once you have kids, that's not an option," Ollson said.

The Toronto doctor said he'd consult with Mayo Clinic experts.

"He said, 'We'll see if we can come up with a plan so you can see your children grow.' "

Back home in Manitoba, her relatives were devastated. Ollson focused on her new baby and family, waiting to learn if she could be "salvaged" and worrying the deadly sarcoma was growing.

Then she got a life-saving phone call. Mayo Clinic doctors asked her to come to the clinic in Rochester, Minn., for the experimental surgery, which had only been tried on cadavers.

"The plan was to remove the tumour, splitting my pelvis in half and removing the left half and left leg and lower spine," she recalled.

Basically, the doctors would cut her in half, remove her midsection and put her back together using the bone from the amputated leg.

Ollson was thrilled.

"Somebody had a plan. It wasn't hopeless."

Family and friends held a social and raised $20,000 to cover the family's travel and living expenses for the 52 days she spent at the Mayo Clinic. The surgeries were a success.

After much rehabilitation, she put her mobility to the test this May, walking down the aisle of their church on husband Daryl's arm, on her way to the altar to renew their vows on their 10th anniversary. She used just a cane and a prosthetic leg with a microprocessor. She says she's leaned on Daryl, her high school sweetheart, throughout the ordeal.

"He's the glue. It's been a lot for him to endure."

Ollson says she's never dwelled on "why me?"

"We don't know when it started... It's not known why anybody gets it. There's no cause for it, no genetic link," said the woman with no cancer in her immediate family.

"There's some purpose to all this whether I know it or not," she said.

Press Release: U.S. Nuclear Weapons Have Been Compromised by UFOs

Witness testimony from more than 120 former or retired military personnel points to an ongoing and alarming intervention by unidentified aerial objects at nuclear weapons sites, as recently as 2003. In some cases, several nuclear missiles simultaneously and inexplicably malfunctioned while a disc-shaped object silently hovered nearby. Six former U.S. Air Force officers and one former enlisted man will break their silence about these events at the National Press Club and urge the government to publicly confirm their reality.

One of them, ICBM launch officer Captain Robert Salas, was on duty during one missile disruption incident at Malmstrom Air Force Base and was ordered to never discuss it. Another participant, retired Col. Charles Halt, observed a disc-shaped object directing beams of light down into the RAF Bentwaters airbase in England and heard on the radio that they landed in the nuclear weapons storage area. Both men will provide stunning details about these events, and reveal how the U.S. military responded.

Captain Salas notes, "The U.S. Air Force is lying about the national security implications of unidentified aerial objects at nuclear bases and we can prove it." Col. Halt adds, "I believe that the security services of both the United States and the United Kingdom have attempted—both then and now—to subvert the significance of what occurred at RAF Bentwaters by the use of well-practiced methods of disinformation."

The group of witnesses and a leading researcher, who has brought them together for the first time, will discuss the national security implications of these and other alarmingly similar incidents and will urge the government to reveal all information about them. This is a public-awareness issue.

Declassified U.S. government documents, to be distributed at the event, now substantiate the reality of UFO activity at nuclear weapons sites extending back to 1948. The press conference will also address present-day concerns about the abuse of government secrecy as well as the ongoing threat of nuclear weapons.

South America’s Procession of the Damned / Malaysian 'Oily Man' Phenomena

Scott Corrales of Inexplicata-The Journal of Hispanic Ufology has produced another fine article on a variety of strange apparitions and humanoid sightings throughout South America. I have followed up with a few similar 'oily man' apparition reports and anecdotes from Malaysia:

South America’s Procession of the Damned
By Scott Corrales

The recent news stories surrounding the “Hopping Phantom of Calchín” led us to remember other similar experiences involving improbable transient creatures that appear in our midst out of nowhere. These apparitions are sometimes bestial, sometimes quite normal, and at others completely otherworldly.

Raul Núñez of the Instituto de Investigacion y Estudios Exobiologicos (IIEE) in Chile has drawn our attention to a case featured on his website ( The lengthy report bears the title “¿Qué Pasó en Cutún en 1976?” (What Happened in Cutún in 1976?) and is written by Sergio Alcaya, a systems engineer who has taken it upon himself to re-open the case, which is one of the strangest I’ve heard of, and straddles the “high-strangeness” no-man’s land of UFO, paranormal and parapsychological investigation.

Cutún is a community in northern Chile’s Valle de Elqui, a tourist destination favored by the country’s contactee groups as they endeavor to make contact with the ever-present “kindly space brothers”, a South American Sedona, if you will. But it appears that a particularly virulent poltergeist event also occurred here, one that draws our attention due to the presence of a Man-in-Black with a singular characteristic not reported in other cases.

In February 1976, a man named Nicasio Torres, the protagonist of the story, barged into the home of his neighbors, Angel and Gabriel Orrego to ask for help. The brothers did their best to calm him down and asked him to tell them what was going on. Gasping for breath, Torres told them that absolutely impossible events were taking place inside his modest home: stones were raining on his roof, but out of thin air. Assuring him that a childish prank was probably involved, the Orregos send Torres on his way, only to have him return the next day asking for assistance – the stones were now falling into his house, through the roof. Another person interviewed for the story recalled that whenever Nicasio Torres came looking for help, “all the dogs in the area would start to howl.”

Neighbors who lent their assistance in the case reported seeing doors and windows that wouldn’t close despite their best efforts, showers of rocks and human bones (including bones that came through windows without shattering the glass panes), intense whistling noises within the Torres home that drove every one out, and a rag doll – used as a pin cushion by the lady of the house – that would leap about, chasing Nicasio Torres’s small daughter, and was seen to jump out of one of the open, uncloseable windows.

“Many parapsychologists and mentalists,” writes Alcaya, “tried to find solutions to the phenomena taking place in Cutún, but none of them was truly effective. Neither the crosses made of Palquí, which were destroyed by invisible hands only minutes after having been placed, nor holy water were powerful enough against the phenomenon.” A pair of Argentinean parapsychologists urged the Torres family to place an altar in honor of Our Lady of Andacollo within the house, but on three separate occasions the same angry force toppled the plaster image. “When the parapsychologist learned that the force present within the home was too powerful to face, he decided to leave the area quickly, never to reappear.”

So far we have the makings of a poltergeist account that could sprung from the pages of Hereward Carrington’s Haunted People or a similar text devoted to the more frightening aspects of parapsychological research. The case received considerable media coverage and Alcaya’s interviews include newspaper clippings from 1976 describing the grisly events at Cutún. But there is an aspect that brings the incidents surrounding Nicasio Torres and his family into UFO/paranormal arena: the presence of a Man-in-Black (MIB), and a very different one at that.

Haydé Carvajal, one of the witnesses and a friend of Nicasio’s wife Rosa, had a fascinating story to tell. One evening, both women were startled by the sudden appearance of “a pale, black-haired man of average height, who asked if Nicasio was home.” When told that Mr. Torres was at work, the strange figure said that “he would wait for Nicasio at five minutes before midnight over there,” pointing at the summit of Cerro Cutún, a hundred meters distant from the house. This strange character “had red eyes”.

Gabriel Orrego also remembered the strange figure, telling the interviewer: “I was never so frightened in my life as when I had to face that man. He came around three times looking to Nicasio, always saying the same thing to [Mrs. Torres]: “Tell him I’m waiting for him – he knows where to find me.”

“The conclusion reached by several parapsychologists looking into the case,” recalls Orrego in the interview, was that the MIB represented “an agglomeration of negative forces.” Orrego had the chance to run into the character in broad daylight elsewhere in the community. “I noticed the man’s presence and I went out to challenge him, however, when I came to within four meters of this character, I was able to see that [he was] a pale man wearing a brown blazer, impeccably clean shoes and black hair, passing in front of the gate to my property. I saw him and was paralyzed. To my surprise, this man was floating some 50 centimeters off the ground, and made a sudden, ninety degree turn to look at me fixedly and deeply. For the first time ever, I knew what fear really was, and I broke into a sweat. The man made another ninety-degree turn and continued on his way before vanishing down the road.”

Other people also saw the bizarre apparition. Cab driver Nelson Alcayaga and his wife Ruthy Chelme saw a man “wearing a brown or green three-piece suit” drifting in the air toward them, as they drove along in their car. “The impression we had was that this man was floating toward us only centimeters off the ground, and Nelson hit the brakes, nearly flinging us against the windshield. When we looked again, he was gone.”

This blend of supernatural factors appears to be a constant in cases emerging from South America. On the other side of the Andean Range, Argentina has supernatural beliefs that combine native lore and European ceremonial magic. For those who believe that magic comes in two colors only, “red magic” can be obtained only through blood sacrifices, such as through Santería rituals. Red magic, it is believed, can be an offshoot of black magic if the blood employed in the ritual comes from someone else or through a sacrifice, and can come from white magic if it is one’s own blood. The belief in this third variant of occult lore is widespread, far from sophisticated urban centers like Buenos Aires or Mendoza, and it is a source of fear for the small farmer or landowner. This fear was exacerbated in the summer of 2002 by the high-strangeness events accompanying the wave of cattle mutilations that swept over Argentina and spilled over into neighboring countries.

On the night of June 20, 2002 personnel at the Puente Dique bridge over the Rio Colorado saw an object "giving off a powerful red light" whose intensity waxed and waned as it moved in bursts. Jorge Martinez, an operator at the bridge, added: "some say the lights are connected to the dead animals."

The lights were now appearing elsewhere in the country and causing physical effects in humans and machinery alike. Argentina's TELAM news agency reported that two young girls--Gabriela and Miriam del Valle Salto, ages 7 and 13 respectively, had been hospitalized in Santiago del Estero (northern Argentina) after having witnessed "multicolored lights". Other locals attested having seen potent violet lights in the sky: one woman said that an intense light shone outside the windows to her home while the internal lighting system dimmed. The mysterious lights seen over the town of Fernandez Robles between June 11-14, for example, were able to interrupt television signals, cause TV sets to shut down "without any interruption to power supply" or even change channels on the receivers.

The strange lights gave rise to much paranormal speculation. Residents of La Chiquita in northern Argentina blamed the mutilations on "red magic", an appellation possibly derived from the color of the strange lights that were seen hovering at treetop level over darkened fields. Daniel Acuña, crossing the darkened fields of La Chiquita on his way to work, saw the lights, which prompted him to remark "it was like an evil light, which I was told was those who practice red magic." The luminous presences had been seen prior to the mutilation of a horse (tongue ripped out, anus and eyes missing) in the vicinity--a death which deprived a local widow of her only means of earning a living, since the animal was used to haul coal and firewood for sale. Strange lights in the wilderness had been a factor decades earlier: In August 1968, disturbing luminous forms were reported over Santa Fé, Argentina, in the dark winter nights of the Southern Hemisphere. Farmers setting out on their chores were greeted by the surprising sight of circular burn marks on their properties following these sightings. Livestock losses mounted as a “sort of radiation” in the region was blamed as the cause. During these troubled times (as Argentina was experiencing political unrest as well ) a local family witnessed a jeep carrying four men in black coveralls drive up to their home. One of the men asked the owner what was the best way to get off the property. UFO sightings over the region ceased shortly after the incident involving these jeep-riding MIB.

In cases like the Cutún “poltergeist” – to find a convenient drawer to place it in – research or accident usually provide an answer in the end: the accursed property was built over a burial ground or something similar. But random manifestations of strange and unsavory figures, who remain for a brief period in our midst before disappearing and becoming part of the Fortean menagerie, often lack a provenance. In April 2004, the Argentinean town of Justo Daract was disturbed by a strange entity dubbed El uñudo (the clawed one) by the local media. Newspapers like Diario de la República ran the story of a child who had been attacked by the unknown entity. Multiple witness cases soon emerged, such as the group of young women who encountered the creature – a frightening, black-masked entity with taloned fingers -- as they left their night school classes at 23:00 hours.

Local radio reporter Maura Avila spoke to several local witnesses. "I was informed that there was a great deal of movement in Barrio Norte, near the hospital, and we headed there just as the police arrived. We learned that El uñudo had appeared -- a character who has gained notoriety in Justo Daract because he/it has been appearing for several days now, and has now terrified an 11 year-old on the corner of Liniers and Los Andes [...] Those who claim having seen El uñudo [say] that it doesn't have human form, rather an animal one, adding that it walks on four legs and hops, being capable of very swift movements." Avila added that the locals had discussed the existence of “black magic cults” in the area and feared that El uñudo could have been an entity summoned during the course of some unspeakable ritual – especially as the timing of these manifestations coincided with Easter Week.

As has occurred only recently with the “Hopping Phantom” in 2010, the good people of Justo Daract formed search parties aimed at tracking down El uñudo: aided by the local police and members of the neighborhood watch, found themselves walking along the train tracks in the dark due to a report that claimed the creature had climbed to the very top of the grain silos by the rails. The dangerous climb to the top of these structures revealed nothing of interest.

On 8 April 2004, another young woman returning home at 03:00 on her bicycle reportedly saw the strange character jumping from one rooftop to the next at the 331 Viviendas neighborhood of Justo Daract. Terrified beyond words, the girl pedaled furiously back to the local bus station – ten city blocks away – in order to take the bus home. Drivers and workers at the terminal attested to her distraught condition. Something strange – whether human or not – was scaring the hell out of the locals. Descriptions of El uñudo now ranged from “large and with a mask and horns; small and apelike, black or brown, with a nude upper torso and covered with tattoos; walking upright or on four legs; leaving goat-shaped hoof prints; climbing trees, pipelines or metal silos; jumping over wire fences and large lagoons, swift and elusive,” according to El Diario de la República.

Other sources reported that despite their failure to locate the supernatural intruder at the grain silos, officers had managed to apprehend the creature at some point, but that it eluded capture in a display of inhuman strength and “the slippery nature of its body” – a quality it shared with the Malaysian orang minyak or “oily man” who became a focus of mass hysteria in the 1960s.

Young Women Groped By Apparition in Malaysia - A horny orang minyak or 'Oily Man', a ghost in Malay culture, is said to be terrorising about 300 families in Sungai Petani, picking homes where there are young women.

According to Kosmo!, Nurshahirah, 17, revealed that she was awakened at 5.40am on September 14 after she felt a warm sensation on her left ear, and when she opened her eyes she saw an apparition with curly hair and thick moustache standing by her bed.

“I was even more shocked when the ghost took off his kain pelikat and started to fondle himself,” the Star Online quoted her as saying.

Nurshahirah, who lives in Taman Keladi, said she felt powerless to ward off the apparition who started to grope her body, and that it was as though a charm had been placed on her.

In another incident, housewife Fatimah, 42, revealed she heard her two daughters crying out when they were woken up at 5am by dark apparitions that molested them.

Her 15-year-old daughter told her that she had been “violated” by a ghost.

“At first I thought she was talking in her sleep but she insisted that she was molested by a ghost before it moved to the kitchen,” Fatimah said.

She said her 14-year-old, too, cried and ran from the living room, saying a dark apparition had molested her.

“My 14-year-old daughter said she managed to kick the ghost who wore a kain pelikat and black singlet when she felt her body being touched,” she revealed.

“She screamed and the ghost ran out of her room,” she added.

Fatimah said she gave chase with a parang but the apparition disappeared.

She also said the apparition could have placed a charm on her family because none of the neighbours heard her daughters’ screams.

The Orang Minyak

The The Orang Minyak is one of a number of supposed ghosts in Malay culture. Orang Minyak means 'oily man' in Malay.

There exist several different versions of the legend and the creature. According to one legend, popularised in the 1956 film Sumpah Orang Minyak (The Curse of the Oily Man) directed by and starring P. Ramlee, the orang minyak was a man who in an attempt to win back his love with magic was cursed. In this version, the devil offered to help the creature and give him powers of the black arts, but only if the orang minyak worshipped the devil and raped 21 virgins within a week. In another version it is under control of an evil bomoh or witch doctor. Another movie based on Orang Minyak was produced in 2007, showing this theme remain popular until now. As at 24 November 2006, a burglar was arrested, stark naked and covered with oil, reminiscient of orang minyak in Malaysia.

In the 1960s, the orang minyak supposedly lived around several Malaysian towns raping young women. The orang minyak of the 1960s was described as human, having a naked body covered with oil to make it difficult to catch. However, there were also stories of the orang minyak where it was supposedly supernatural in origin, or invisible to non-virgins (possibly from the oil) or both. The mass panic has also led to unmarried women, typically in student dormitories, borrowing sweaty clothes to give the impression to the orang minyak that they are with a man. Other defences supposedly include biting its left thumb and covering it in batik.

In short, the orang minyak is a supernatural serial rapist that is hard to see and hard to catch. Some have speculated that the orang minyak is a regular criminal who uses black grease as a night-time camouflage. Due to the use of black grease, it makes the orang minyak hard to catch, as pursuers would not be able to hold on to him. However, in some encounters with the orang minyak, the situation is not explainable from a non-supernatural angle.

It is possible that different versions of the legend were used as a cover for things other than actual rapes. Reputed sightings of the orang minyak, or events later ascribed to it, have continued with reduced frequency into the 2000s.

In 2005, there have been cases of rapists covered in oil roaming around, armed with knives.

The following is an account of an orang minyak attack at the Shah Alam Institute for Higher Learning in the late 1990's. This was told to me several years ago...Lon

One late evening, while studying with her friends and roommates, Aimee started to get she decided to turn in for the night. She was almost asleep when she felt something on top of her. She opened her eyes and saw a huge nude man on top of her! He was jet-black. She tried to scream but no voice came out. She attempted to push him off, but could not find any strength to do so. She felt weak and hypnotized. What angered her most was her friends didn't come to her aid. Supposedly, Aimee was raped by the orang minyak. Later, she was laying in her bed crying...only then her friends realized that something was not right. They asked Aimee what was wrong but all Aimee could do was cursed them. They were surprised and confused. After Aimee had calmed down, again her friends asked her what's wrong. Aimee was pale and they noticed that s was a jumpy and irritable. Aimee then asked them why they did not come to her aid when that man was raping her. Again, they were shocked and assured her that they didn't realized she was attacked. They immediately reported the incident to the school warden. It was an experience that will haunt her for the rest of her life. The authorities was not able to capture this orang minyak who terrorized the Institute, so management decided to bring a holy man to "chase" this orang minyak away...though attacks still occur but less frequent.
