MUFON CMS: Close Encounters in Michigan and Texas

The following encounter scenarios were posted today (8/28/10) at the MUFON Case Management System:

MUFON CMS Report - Clair Shores, Michigan - 1979 (unedited): This is the encounter my mother had back in 1979/1980 in St. Claire Shores Mich at the playground/ballfield by Talbot st.& New York st. It was 7:00pm maybe 8:00pm, August or Sept, she was 45 yrs old & I was 10 yrs old or so, and my sister was 16yrs old. my mother just recalled this past incident about 4 or 5 months ago,and told my sister the story, who then informed me of it this past July. It began that evening, my mother took our dog Rocky out for a walk, she is never gone more than hour or so, but that all changed during this walk. After an hour I began to worry, I must have told my sister because she clearly remembers me being alarmed.

Here is the story my mother conveyed: While I was walking Rocky across the park/ballfield I noticed odd lights all different colors flashing on the ground,I thought It was strange that utility workers would be working at this time in the late evening. Next I saw several who I thought were small children all around me. They didn't look like normal kids though and then they began to talk to me,not through their mouths, but through their minds. I heard them clearly in my mind. The beings said why don't you come with us, and I said to where, and one of said to our craft right over there. I said no i'm busy why should I go with you, and they responded because we want to help you. Then another being asked me what is that next to you? before I could answer one other being said that's her pet. Then one of them said again come with us we want to help you, I told them if you want to help me you should go to Washington. What is Washington? one of them said. After that exchange my mother says she remembers very little.A note to the reader, I had an encounter in my yard when I was 7 or 8 years of age. a craft was hovering over our front yard and I saw 3 beings staring down upon me from inside the craft, which was about 60 or 70 ft above me. Also my sister saw a UFO hovering near her while she was on her bike, she was 10 or 11 at the time, and it occurred at Talbot st and New York st also. Our house is only 5 or 6 houses from New York st. Today the house is still there, but nobody resides there yet. By the way my childhood friend & his family always told me & others that our house was haunted, because they saw bluish glowing or bluish orbs over our rooftop more than once back in the late 70's.

MUFON CMS - Eastland County, Texas - 1990 (unedited): We were traveling from the Cisco, Tx countryside on back roads towards Eastland, Tx and a large round white light was following us most of the way, jigg-jagging from one side of the car to the other with no sound. Our windows were all rolled down and the object was not far away but we heard nothing. We were a family of six with kids ranging from six to ten yrs of age all of whom were very excited and a little scared. This object followed us most of the way, then just darted away quickly. A few days later the object was hovering above our home for several hours while we were all outdoors having a cookout. We lived a few miles out in the country in a secluded area. I don't know if it's related, but also around about the same time of the month, our home started shaking or trembling sort of like an earthquake, although there were none reported in the area. This actually caused cracks in the mortar of our rock house. It's nice to finally get this off my mind my telling someone. Thanks.

'Ghost Train' Hunter Killed By Train In North Carolina

CNN - The facts: On August 27, 1891, a passenger train jumped the tracks on a tall bridge near Statesville, North Carolina, sending seven rail cars below and about 30 people to their deaths.

The legend: On the wreck's anniversary, the sounds of screeching wheels, screaming passengers and a horrific crash might still be heard. You might also see a uniformed man with a gold watch.

Shortly before 3 a.m. Friday, on the 119th anniversary of the Bostian Bridge train tragedy and at about the same time, between 10 and 12 ghost hunters were on that approximately 300-foot long span.

They were hoping to hear the sounds of the crash, and perhaps see something.

Instead, a real Norfolk-Southern train -- three engines and one car -- turned the corner as it headed east to Statesville, about 35 miles north of Charlotte, authorities said.

The terrified "amateur ghost watchers" ran away, back toward Statesville, trying to cover the nearly 150 feet to safety, said Iredell County Sheriff's Office Capt. Darren Campbell.

All but two made it.

Christopher Kaiser, 29, of Charlotte, was struck and killed, said Campbell.

A woman who witnesses say Kaiser pushed to safety fell about 30 to 40 feet from the trestle and was injured. Her name and condition were not known Friday night. She was being treated at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

"There was no way out, said Campbell. "They almost made it."

The engineer of the train, which was traveling at its customary 35 to 40 mph, hit the horn and "stopped as fast as he could," Campbell said.

Campbell, 38, is from the area and has heard all the stories, although he said he knows of no one who has ever seen or heard the "ghost train."

On the 50th anniversary of the Bostian Bridge incident, a woman said she witnessed it all again. In 1991, hawkers sold T-shirts and other memorabilia, and there were an estimated 150 people waiting for the train, according to the Charlotte Observer.

There are occasional reports of railroad crossing arms dropping without cause, Campbell said.

The ghost trip on the anniversary has become an annual tradition of sorts.

A woman who did not want to be identified, but who was part of the group of onlookers, told CNN affiliate WCNC, "We were there looking for what people say happened. You hear the train wreck or hear people screaming. We were just watching."

Kaiser's mother said the family was too distraught to talk about the incident, WCNC said.

Campbell said most of the ghost hunters, who were from out of town, have been interviewed. Many fled because they were trespassing on railroad property, he said. Campbell said there were no patrols near the bridge early Friday.

Although the investigation is continuing, Campbell said the incident appears to be an accident.

At least two blogs that cover the phenomena, N.C. Ghost Guide and, detail the 1891 wreck's legend. While accounts vary somewhat, the man with the gold watch reportedly was first seen on the first anniversary.

According to, Hugh K. Linster was a baggage master for the Asheville-bound train that crashed into Third Creek that August of 1891.

"Hugh Linster never made it to retirement," the blog reads. "His body was found in the wreck having been killed immediately upon impact with a broken neck."

One year later, a group of people at the bridge said they saw a man in a railroad uniform, holding a watch.

He vanished before their eyes, legend has it.

Numerous Great White Sharks Seen Lurking Off Southern California Beaches

underwatertimes - There have been 8 confirmed and 5 suspected white shark sightings and breaches reported from Sunset Beach, Los Angeles, in less than two weeks. Observations have occurred from early morning to late afternoon. Reports of juvenile and adult white sharks from this location are not new or unique.

Last October 3rd several photographs of a breaching white Shark were posted on the Pacific Coast Shark News page. Many more have been posted since that date. Daily reconnaissance by helicopter of this location has yielded some intriguing results over the past 13 days.

According to the helicopter pilot Lance O: "White sharks have been active at Sunset Beach every day with no less than 5 sharks present. The sharks range in length from 7 – 18+ feet."

The sightings are not limited to just Sunset Beach, but have also been reported with some regularity from San Onofre State Beach as well. Other locations have included; Point Mugu, Pismo Beach, Carpenteria, Venice Breakwater, La Jolla, Point Dume, Gaviota, Huntington State Beach and Topanga State Beach to name but a few. Year to date there have been 4 authenticated, unprovoked shark attacks on humans. The date, location, and victim activity are listed below.

*2 Jul 2010, Surfing, Silver Shoals at Shell Beach (Pismo Beach), CA
*2 Jul 2010, Paddleboard, Dog Patch, San Onofre State Beach, CA
*2 Aug 2010, Kayaking, 5 Nautical Miles off Gaviota State Beach, CA
*14 Aug 2010, Kayaking, Bean Hollow Beach, Pigeon Point, CA

Photographs and narratives for these recent encounters are posted on the Shark Research Committee's Pacific Coast Shark News page.

Shark encounters are not unusual this time of year in the Southern California area, which is believed to be a birthing location and nursery for white sharks. Juvenile sharks are frequently observed close inshore during those times of the month when the California Grunion spawn.

Venezuelan Politician Offers Breast Implants As Raffle Prize To Raise Election Funds

telegraph - "There are critics but also some people think it's a nice idea," said Gustavo Rojas, an opposition candidate for a National Assembly position.

Cosmetic surgery, especially breast enlargement, is widespread in image-conscious Venezuela, whose beauty queens have won numerous international pageant titles.

Even a recession has not diminished Venezuelans' appetite for cosmetic surgery with many people taking out loans for the surgery.

Mr Rojas, of the opposition First Justice party, told El Universal newspaper that he was not too worried about the medical details of his offer.

"The raffle is a financing mechanism, nothing else," he told the newspaper. "It's the doctor who will do the operation, not me."

Venezuelans vote on Sept 26 for a new parliament.

The country's president, Hugo Chavez, on Friday denied rumours that he was suffering from cancer.

Local media reports had claimed that the 56-year-old was suffering from cancer in the nasal cavity.

His failure to appear on Wednesday's first day of campaigning for the parliamentary elections fuelled the speculation, although it later transpired that Mr Chavez had been holding a lengthy meeting with his mentor, Fidel Castro, in Cuba.

Mr Chavez, who has inherited Castro's mantle as Latin America's leading critic of the United States, took power in 1999 and plans to run again for the presidency in 2012.

NC Woman Convicted of Resisting Arrest After Recording Traffic Stop from Her Porch

alternet - The resisting-arrest conviction last week of Felicia Gibson has left a lot of people wondering. Can a person be charged with resisting arrest while observing a traffic stop from his or her own front porch?

Salisbury Police Officer Mark Hunter thought so, and last week District Court Judge Beth Dixon agreed. Because Gibson did not at first comply when the officer told her and others to go inside, the judge found Gibson guilty of resisting, delaying or obstructing an officer.

Salisbury Police Chief Rorie Collins wouldn’t comment on the case specifically, but did discuss the charge in general terms with the Salisbury Post:

Post: What is “resisting arrest” or “resist, delay, obstruct an officer” in the performance of his/her duties?

Collins: “These are basically the same charge. Some call the charge simply “resisting arrest,” and some call it by its longer and more official title.

Post: If the police stop someone in a car in front of my house, do I have the right to stand in my yard or on my porch and watch?

Collins: “The answer to this question is not quite as clear cut as the first. The short and quick answer is, ‘yes,’ in general, you do have that right!

“However, just as with many other scenarios, it is important to remember that every situation is based upon its own merits/circumstances. There are some circumstances in which the police who have stopped the vehicle in front of your house may determine that it is in the interest of safety (the officer’s, yours or the individual stopped) to require that folks move. As with other circumstances, it is best advised that an individual merely obey by the officer’s commands.”

Fair enough. So, is that what happened here? No.

Gibson was not the only bystander watching the action on the street. She was the only one holding up a cell-phone video camera. But court testimony never indicated that Hunter told her to stop the camera; he just told her to go inside.

The police arrested this woman for recording their traffic stop. From her own private property. Cops don’t like video.

Seems to me that the judge should’ve thrown this case out. If the bystanders without cellphone cameras weren’t ‘resisting, delaying or obstructing’ the officers, how is it that she was?

NOTE: similar incident below:

I was arrested with felony charges for expressing protest against acts of injustice against a neighbor.

After cops felt her up during the traffic stop and illegally began to search her vehicle against her will, I expressed myself and got arrested. After the video, they illegally trespassed and searched my vehicle, finding one of my many legal firearms and held me 24 hours on a felony charge that was dropped the next day.

New Information: Warner Amazon Expedition 2010

Click for video

The Warner Amazon Expedition has released the following at Warner Amazon Expedition 2010

You have published our expedition data in the past and we would like your support in helping us make this important announcement as we are on the verge of proving two major zoological /crypto zoological discoveries.

The video link will show Mike Warner announcing our Funding Campaign for our return ground expedition to sites 1 & 2 in the Peruvian Amazon and releases extraordinary information which has never been made public before today.

Mike has also decided to make a series of full disclosure videos to support his claims.

The "Scientists" link will show new support for our theories as they accelerate their support for our project and offer resources and training for the expedition.

NOTE: BTW, the following link leads to a recent extraordinary claim in relation to the Yacumama or Giant Black Boa - Photo Enhancements by Will Elliott, Hertfordshire, UK. 3rd June, 2010...Lon

Information posted on previous updates:

Back in January 2010, I posted Warner Amazon Expedition 2010: In Search of Yacumama. I received the following update correspondence yesterday:

Dear Lon

In November last year we reported on, and supplied photographs of, a giant snake event in near the jungle city of Iquitos Peru. The photographs we commissioned showed a trail at least 5 meters wide and now we have located video evidence to support our photos and eye-witness accounts.

The video is in Spanish but we have had our contact in the Amazon supply a full translation.

This is clearly further evidence that the Black Boa, Yacumama, Sachamama and the Minhocao are one and the same animal. All contemporaneous description and photographic evidence points to this conclusion.

Please follow the link below which will direct your readers to this new information.

As your readers will know, we have been in discussions with selected TV Production companies and Broadcasters with the aim of supporting our return to the Amazon this year for a ground expedition is search of conclusive evidence including DNA to prove that this snake is a species previously unknown to science.

Although we still remain hopeful we received a setback last week when National Geographic International (who took an interest in our project) became concerned about the risks involved in the return expedition. Please see the correspondence below. We will continue to keep you posted on our progress:

Dear Greg,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you on this but we reviewed the materials from Firecracker Films regarding Yacumama. It is an exciting and intriguing story for sure. While we did like the father/son dynamic, NGCI...feel that there is a bit of risk associated with a program of this nature. Also, upon further evaluation of our current and future programming, we don't have a strong need for a one-off of this nature at this time. Our primary need is for series.

That being said, we'd be happy to take a look once again when the project is completed.

All the best in your journey to find the Yacumama!

Best Regards,

After seeing Lucho Llosa's Anaconda movie, panic has -in some way- generalized against this giant snake, and myths grew around this animal, that is why we believe that if the Peruvian movie maker Lucho Llosa had heard the story lived by these persons, he would have to re-write Anaconda and roll a second part.

In the human settlement 24 de Mayo, today's dawn, the dwellers got into panic when seeing that on the enormous swamp located at the posterior part of the settlement, a huge silhouette of dragged grass and mud was drawn; attributing the event to the Sachamama, although others said that it a was gigantic boa that guarded a small pond of the place.

Presenter- Before the rain fell, was there this here?

Woman- Yes, there was a cocha here

Presenter- A cocha… but was it a cocha that size or…

Woman- All this is water, don’t you see where you are walking?

Presenter- ok, but was there this entire open field?

Man with hat- No, no, there was not… there was not

Woman in white- The neighbors who live near here inform that , they said that there was not; it was just a swamp, water, grass; that is why they are surprised to see all this today.

Presenter- To get to the sinuous path made by the alleged gigantic boa, we had to walk over the mud, only then we could see what remained from the night before, after heavy rains accompanied by lightning and thunder, according to the version of these persons, they felt small tremor at the time the enormous beast got out of its hiding place, to slide to the nearest river opening a trail of more than 5 meters wide, although it has to be said that nobody, but nobody saw the boa.

Man in green- It started to move like this, circulate, until it found a way out over there; and you cannot say that there is a channel over there because everything was plain, as you can see it was plain, all this is a trail that it made, look, it looked like it wanted to get out that way but turned over there, it took all this way, (woman: and it made all this, didn’t it?) it took all this; if you keep walking that way you can see, it remained like this. But before it was not like that.

Presenter- People, you say that before people used to throw their garbage here

Woman- Everything, here. Look, it is all clean. (Woman in white)

Presenter- But you consider that that made the animal furious,

Woman in gray- yes because they were throwing broken glass for it to go away…because here there was a cocha, like a lagoon, which never dried out. And where there is a cocha that never dries it is because there is an animal, it has a mother.

Presenter- Did you feel the same tremor, earthquake?

Woman in gray- That was at night, we could not see.

Presenter- But, have you felt a tremor or something?

Woman in white- yes the neighbors say

Woman in gray- there are Aguaje trees over there that were moved like this from one side to the other.

Presenter- But you did not get to see the animal, you assume that it was a boa that got out of here?

Woman- Yes.

Presenter- This family lives in front of this swamp and like their neighbors they found themselves surprised with the event and attest that since before they used to feel small tremors that they supposed it caused by this gigantic boa.

Woman in orange- I did not imagine if the animal, the boa was going to get out.

Presenter- But you supposed that an animal was living there?

Woman in orange- Yes, we supposed there was an animal here because we are living here for 4 years, but every time the animal moved we felt like the earth was moving.

Presenter- Ah.. You say then that the earth felt like moving?

Woman in orange- Yes, yes, we felt like the earth was moving.

Presenter- Rain or no rain?

Woman in orange- Yes, rain or no rain. Like an earthquake. Ground moved.

Presenter- All these people were witnesses of an event like this without getting to see the animal for which we had a doubt of the possible existence of a boa who reaches up to 5 meters in width, doubt that took us to consult Pedro Perez, Biologist, specialist in ophidian and reptiles; and from a professional point of view answered the questions:

Pedro Perez- (“Herpetologist”) Firstly, it doesn’t, it doesn’t exist a reptile, and in this case, a boa of such magnitude of such width, there can exist a 7 meters boa but in length not in width. Well, normally this types of stories are related to… to… torrential rains that fall over determined types of soils, soft soils; where it can generate a… a… sliding of this types of soils. So this makes the idea that an animal of this magnitude has passed by, but in reality it is more related to… to… strong rains, types of soft soils, and sliding more than to an animal very wide that… that does not exist in the Amazonia.

Presenter- Things seemed to be clear but this dweller (woman) has another testimony.

Presenter- So, so, you always thought that there was something here because of a lagoon.

Woman in gray- Yes, young man, because over there, a friend, from his very side walk another black boa came out leaving a trail around 2 ½ 3 meters more or less, the width of that trail over there…,

Presenter- In that occasion, did you see the boa?,

Woman in gray- Yes, it was a black boa. Yes, it was at 4:00PM

Presenter- did you see it

Woman in gray- breaking all his entire sidewalk. Moved everything in his house. Like it was a quake, in his house. But that one went that way by that channel there.

Presenter- And the specialist responded:

Pedro Perez- Definitely, a big animal needs to eat a lot of food … no? For it to maintain its enormous body, if it is a big animal it needs to eat big animals: (wild pig) Sajino, (other type of wild pig) Huangana, (Capibara) Ronsoco, and I don’t think they are in this place, there are not that kind of animals there. At the most there are, maybe, little rats, little frogs, but it is not going to be enough to maintain this, this enormous animal.

And, and in some cases, it has been observed that big serpents, big boas can eat people but in very extreme cases where there are no food.

If, in case, there could be an animal so big of that dimensions, then it would have been eating persons in that place.

Presenter- For the most specialized explanations that exist; beliefs or popular myths, many times, overcome the scientific criteria. Since before seeing it many believe that the Sachamama, Gigantic boa or how you want to call it, keeps more live than ever in all the lakes of the jungle and the Human Settlements.

And you, what do you believe?

Quiet Sun Leads to Upper Atmosphere Collapse

The most detailed sunspot ever obtained in visible light was seen by new telescope at NJIT's Big Bear Solar Observatory. Photo credit: Big Bear Solar Observatory

cosmomagazine - The upper reaches of Earth's atmosphere are unexpectedly shrinking and cooling due to lower ultraviolet radiation from the Sun, U.S. scientists said.

The Sun's energy output dropped to unusually low levels from 2007 to 2009, a significantly long spell with virtually no sunspots or solar storms, according to scientists from the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado.

During that period, the thermosphere, whose altitude ranges from about 90 to 500 kilometers, shrank and contracted from the sharp drop in ultraviolet radiation, said the study published in Geophysical Research Letters.

Good news for satellites

The thermosphere cooled by 41 degrees Celsius in 2008 compared to 1996, and shrank by 30%, "more than at any time in the 43-year era of space exploration" the researchers said.

"Our work demonstrates that the solar cycle not only varies on the typical 11-year time scale, but also can vary from one solar minimum to another," said study lead author Stanley Solomon.

A narrower, less dense thermosphere is good news for satellites orbiting Earth, including the International Space Station, since reduced friction means they can remain aloft longer, said University of Colorado professor and study co-author Thomas Woods.

Sun mimicking 19th century activity

"This is good news for those satellites that are actually operating, but it is also bad because of the thousands of non-operating objects (debris) remaining in space that could potentially have collisions with our working satellites," he added.

Woods said the research shows the Sun could be going through a period of relatively low activity, as it did in the early 19th and 20th centuries.

"If it is indeed similar to certain patterns in the past, then we expect to have low solar cycles for the next 10 to 30 years," he added.

Man Raises Concerns Over 'Serial Killer' Doll

10tv - A man on Wednesday was raising concerns over one of the latest toy to be stocked on the shelves of Toys R Us.

Jim Schultz is passionate about collecting things, from model trucks to more than 8,000 patches and badges, 10TV's Andy Hirsch reported.

"I'm a geek," Schultz said.

Last week, Schultz's hobby took him to Toys R Us where he said he was surprised to see a serial killer action figure.

"As I'm weaving through the aisles I pass this toy and think, 'That that can't be,'" Schultz said.

The "Dexter" action figure is modeled after the character from the TV show about a serial killer who kills other murderers, Hirsch reported.

The action figure comes complete with a handsaw and bloody gloves.

"I thought 'Oh my god! You've got this in Toys R Us? Are you kidding me?'" Schultz said.

Schultz complained to Toys R Us.

The company issued a statement that said in part, "A small number of the item was ordered to accommodate (the stores) avid action figure collector customers," Hirsch reported.

Schultz said collectors can find the Dexter doll in a more appropriate store.

"I've seen the Toys R Us commercials, I didn't see a 30-something-year-old guy dancing around with the kids and the giraffe," Schultz said. "There isn't a serial killer Ken. He doesn't come with a hack saw and a trash bag to put Barbie's head in."

A Toys R Us spokesman said the Dexter figure has been on the shelf for a couple of weeks and that Schultz' complaint is the only one the company has received.

He also said the packaging is labeled "Ages 18 and up" and "Not intended for children."

"I understand it's marketed towards adults, but I do condemn Toys R Us for putting it on their shelves in the same store where you can go buy Barbie or Kermit or Elmo," Schultz said.

The stores in the central Ohio area were each stocked with about eight dolls and once they are gone, they will not be restocked, Hirsch reported.

The company's spokesman said Toys R Us is not the only retailer that carries the doll.

Saudi Couple Hammered 24 Nails Into Sri Lankan Maid

guardian - A Saudi couple tortured their Sri Lankan maid by hammering 24 nails into her hands, legs and forehead, after she complained of a too heavy workload, officials said today.

Nearly 2 million Sri Lankans sought employment overseas last year and around 1.4 million, mostly maids, were employed in the Middle East. Many have complained of physical abuse or harassment. LT Ariyawathi, a 49-year old mother of three, returned home on Friday after five months in Saudi Arabia.

Her family only realised what had happened to her when she complained of pain and they took her to see the doctor, Foreign Employment Bureau officials said.

"The landlord and the wife of the landlord hammered 24 nails into her when she complained of the heavy workload," Kalyana Priya Ramanayake, media secretary of the Foreign Employment Bureau, said.

Ariyawathi has been taken to hospital for surgery to remove the nails, which according to the maid were hammered in when they were hot.

X-rays showed one- to two-inch nails in her hands and legs, with one over her eyes, officials said.

The Foreign Employment Bureau is consulting the attorney-general while the Sri Lankan External Affairs Ministry is to take the matter up with the Saudi government, officials said.

Cuba Ends Cigarette Subsidies

Cuba's elderly will no longer be entitled to state-subsidised cigarettes, the government has said. All Cubans 55 or older are allocated four packs of cigarettes a month for about 25% the normal price, but this privilege is being ended in September.

The measure is President Raul Castro's latest attempt to cut the communist state's spending. The island has been hit hard by the global economic downturn and the long-term US trade embargo.

A statement in the government-run Granma newspaper said the move was "part of the steps gradually being applied to eliminate subsidies". The health benefits were not mentioned. Cigarettes "are not a primary necessity," it said.

"I'm insulted because it's another thing they are taking away from us," said Angela Jimenez, a 64-year-old who receives a monthly pension of about $10 (£6.50). She said she will now have to quit smoking because she won't be able to afford the normal price of about $0.33 a pack. Cigarettes are the latest item to be removed from ration books. Subsidised peas and potatoes were eliminated in November.

Weird Torture Case in Canada

thestar - Calgary police say they are investigating whether the suspect arrested in a gruesome torture case that spans two Prairie provinces may have other alleged victims.

Det. Doug Crippen said Thursday that other individuals have come forward, and he confirmed that there are currently “parallel investigations” looking into the actions of Dustin Paxton.

“I can't get into the specifics of other parallel investigations. As we receive the information, we are following up the information aggressively to ensure that anybody who has encountered a crime is afforded the opportunity to have a bias-free investigation,” Crippen said at an afternoon news conference.

“At this point we are speaking with other individuals and we are encouraging if there are any other individuals who need to report a criminal act with regard to this matter that they come forward.”

Police say the 30-year-old Paxton had been living under an assumed name in Edmonton for the past four months before being taken into custody in that city late Tuesday.

He faces charges that include aggravated assault and forcible confinement relating to his former roommate, Dustin LaFortune. The charges deal with crimes that are alleged to have occurred in both Calgary and Regina.

LaFortune was starved, burned and had parts of his tongue and lips cut off before being dumped at a hospital in Regina earlier this year.

“This case was in particular the worst investigation that I have entered into in my time as a police officer with the Calgary Police Service,” said Crippen, who travelled to Edmonton to interview Paxton.

“I can't speculate on why this particular individual did what he is alleged to have done.”

Police in Regina and Calgary issued warrants for Paxton on Monday — more than four months after LaFortune was dumped at the hospital.

The 26-year-old weighed just 87 pounds, down from his usual weight of 245, when he was left there on April 16. His family has said that in addition to extensive physical injuries, he suffered brain trauma and amnesia.

LaFortune was reported missing in Calgary on April 12.

His family said he moved to Calgary from Winnipeg two years ago to work for a moving company and they lost contact with him in February.

Details about what might have happened during that time began to emerge after LaFortune was dumped at the hospital. A landlord at a Regina apartment building said he rented a suite to LaFortune in mid-March and a man living below that suite said he regularly heard disturbing sounds coming from there. Officers raided the apartment as part of their probe.

Word of the arrest was also welcomed by LaFortune's family and more than 48,000 supporters on a Facebook page dedicated to the case.

While police only recently publicly fingered Paxton as their suspect, LaFortune's family has been pointing to him for months, using the Internet to make its case.

His mother, Renee LaFortune, thanked police and said: “Dustin is safe at last” and referred to Crippen as “a hero.”

“So good to see the prompt arrest after the long-awaited arrest warrant,” wrote another woman.

Paxton is to make his first court appearance in Calgary Aug. 27.

Regina police spokeswoman Elizabeth Popowich said the case has drawn a lot of attention.

“We now have the start of the judicial process ahead of us and that's a good thing. It helps bring some resolution to the victim and the victim's family,” said Popowich.

“I spoke with one of our investigators this morning and he said that the family is obviously quite relieved and ... had learned also from the family of the victim, that the victim himself is quite relieved to hear the news.”

Investigators have said that there were challenges in the investigation, including that LaFortune initially couldn't give officers a statement because of his condition. They also said they needed the four months to gather evidence and build a case.

Audio: Studley Park House, NSW, Australia

Click for video / audio

My friend, Glenn Mitchell of Cumberland & Courier Newspapers in Parramatta, NSW, Australia, forwarded the following piece...very interesting:

MCC - NEW evidence has emerged that spirits inhabit Narellan’s Studley Park House after a documentary crew claimed to have captured audio of a young girl moaning.

Microphones captured the sound on Friday, August 13, after psychic medium Debbie Malone guided the film crew to an upstairs room, Unreel Productions’ Rob Kerr said.

“We were up in a room where Debbie said there was the spirit of a young girl,” he said.

“We picked up what sounded like a young girl making some noise.”

He is certain of finding paranormal activity on 36 hours’ worth of static camera footage yet to be reviewed: “I’d be surprised if we didn’t get anything.

“We set up a few target objects in the smaller rooms, like a teddy bear and balloons. If we see any of those move by themselves, it will indicate paranormal activity.”

Built by grazier William Payne in the 1880s, Studley Park House’s various incarnations have included boarding school and army barracks.

No reported death of a young girl exists - 14-year-old Ray Blackstone drowned in a dam near the house in 1909, and Noel Gregory, 13, perished of appendicitis there in 1937.

But according to ghost tour guide Joanne Gulson, the spirit belonged to “Amelia”, whose violent rape and murder in a top-floor bedroom at age 8 went unrecorded.

“She looks like Shirley Temple,” the medium said. “She’s extremely playful; we left a toy there for her to play with.”

Earlier this year, roofing contractors claimed to have discovered a hangman’s noose dangling inside the house.

A building contractor restoring Studley Park, which is being remade into the Australian home of The Sir Henry Royce Foundation and a Rolls-Royce museum, declared himself a sceptic.

“I’ve been staying here overnight for the past 10 days and I’ve seen nothing,” Tom Duffy, 61, said.

Workers at Haunted Mansion Discover Hangman's Noose

Studley Park House's reputation for being haunted has deepened after workmen responsible for repairing the old house made a disturbing discovery.

The men have been busy replacing parts of the iron roof and repairing the slate to make the 120-year-old Victorian mansion watertight.

But it's the interior that has had them buzzing after they stumbled on a hangman's noose dangling from the home's steeple roof.

Studley Park House the centrepiece of Camden Golf Course has long been regarded as one of Camden's most haunted abodes.

The haunting theories were spawned by several tragic incidents that occurred on the site like the drowning of a 14-year-old boy in the property's dam in 1909 and the death in 1939 of the son of then-owner Arthur Gregory, a sales manager for Twentieth Century Fox Australia. Mr Gregory's son reportedly died in the home's theatrette from appendicitis.

Rod Nash, director of Affordable Roofing, the company repairing the roof, said he had no doubt the house was haunted. Despite uncovering the hangman's noose, Mr Nash said he was keen to visit the house at night.

Studley Park House was built by Narellan grazier William Payne in 1889 for his bride but after running into debt he sold it to an architect.

The grand home changed owners several times over the years and has been used as a private residence, as Camden Grammar School and for army training during World War II.

Camden Historical Society's Ray Herbert researched Studley Park's long and interesting history.

``I've been in the house at all hours of the day and night and I haven't seen a ghost,'' he said.

The same can't be said for the four contestants who spent time isolated in the dormitory, cellar, theatre and tower for the 2001 filming of Scream Test, a psychological reality game show. The brave participants were locked in the house as cameras filmed their feelings, thoughts and any paranormal occurrences.

One of the contestants, who reported hearing voices, was too spooked to continue the challenge and another said he'd heard a baby crying from a corner of the room. ``Kids have said they've walked past the house and seen a lady looking out the window,'' Mr Herbert said.

``Someone once reported seeing the lights on in a part of the house where there were no lights. Another time when the fire brigade was called to investigate a report of lights being on, they checked the mains and found they were switched off.''

In October 1888, grazier and businessman William Charles Payne bought land near Camden in an area called Narellan in southwest Sydney. He named his newly acquired property "Studley Park", after the original Studley Park located in Yorkshire, England. In 1889, construction of a grand Victorian mansion began. Designed by A. L. & G. McCredie, a prosperous architectural and engineering firm, it became known as "Payne's Folley".

Unfortunately, due to financial difficulties, Payne was forced to sell the house to pay off his debt to the house's architect, a man named Francis Buckle. Buckle used Studley Park House as a weekend retreat until it was sold to Dr Henry Oliver, the headmaster of The Camden Grammar School in 1902. The school had originally been located at St Helen's Park House in Campbelltown.

On October 15, 1909, fourteen year old student Ray Blackstone and 5 of his fellow boarders decided to go for a swim in a nearby damn. Despite being told time and time again about the dangers of swimming in the dam, the boys ignored the warning. During an attempt to swim to one side of the damn and back, Ray began to struggle. Despite the assistance of his friend, Sydney Langford, the boy drowned. His lifeless body was brought ashore by senior students and it is reputed to have been stored in the cold, dark cellar of Studley Park House, awaiting burial.

The school was sold in 1919 to Reverend Charles Herbert Palmer and continued to operate until 1933 when it was packed up and moved to the home of Parliamentary Member for Sydney, William Bede Dalley, in Manly.

Studley Park was sold to Arthur Adolphus Gregory, sales manager of Twentieth Century Fox Australia. Gregory furbished Studley Park House in Art Deco style and converted the student's dining room into a theatrette. A keen golfer, he had a nine hole course designed for the land surrounding the house. A further nine holes were later added and the original stables block/classroom was converted into the golf club.

In 1939, tragedy struck when Gregory's son died in the theatrette from appendicitis.

When World War II began the property was taken over by the Department of Defence and became The Eastern Command Training School. Accommodation was increased to house the 280 staff and students attending the school's courses. Lieutenant A. R. Cutler, a future Governor of New South Wales, was one of the first students to graduate. In 1951 the first intake of the Women's Royal Australian Army Corps began their training at Studley Park.

Humanoid / Cryptid Encounter Reports - Japan

I received an email from a reader in Japan recently who asked if I had any knowledge of actual cryptid / humanoid encounter reports or activity in his country. He stated that there were hundreds of spirit sightings and ghost legends...but he rarely heard of people encountering unknown creatures. It was an intriguing I promised to conduct some research and post my findings. The following anecdotes and stories are a few interesting accounts:

Tokagawa Shogunate, Japan - February 22, 1803

Possibly the first written account referencing alien symbols and a possible humanoid encounter is a story in Japanese folklore. The story takes place on February 22nd in the spring of 1803. Offshore from a beach called Hara-yadori in the territory of Ogasawara Etchuu-no-kami (4000 koku'), who occupied a position named "Yoriai-seki" of Tokagawa shogunate at that time, a kind of boat was observed from the beach. People approached this boat using their small boats and eventually caught it. They towed it to the beach.

The boat was round and resembled a kind of kou-hako (a box used to burn incense). Its diameter was more than 3 ken (5.45 in). On the upper part of the boat, there were glass-fitted shoji (windows with lattice) and they were shielded by chan (a kind of waterproofed putty made from pine-tree gum). The bottom of this ship was reinforced by separated iron plates. This structure may protect the boat from destruction by sunken rocks. Since the glass-fitted shoji was transparent, the people could see the inside the boat, where they found a woman with strange features. Her hair and eyebrows were red, and her face was pink. It seemed that long white hair was added to her original hair.

This foreign woman held one square box whose size was about two shaku (60 cm) in her hands. It seemed that this box was very important to her because she held this box constantly, and she prohibited anyone from approaching it.

The objects found in this boat were investigated by the people. There was about two shou (3.6 liters) of water in the small bottle. There were two pieces of carpet, cake-like food, and kneaded meat. While people discussed what to do about this boat, the woman observed them peacefully.

Another similar description of an incident was found:

On March 24, 1803, a strange boat drifted ashore on a beach named Haratono-hama in Hitachi state in Japan. The boat was hollow and its shape was similar to a rice-cooking pot. It had a kind of rimmed-edge at the center-level part of the boat. In the part above this edge, the boat was painted in black and had four small windows on four sides. All shoji (windows with lattice) were shielded by chan (a kind of waterproof putty made from pine-tree gum). The lower part of the boat was reinforced by steel bars. These bars looked to be made of Western-made iron of the highest quality. The height of the boat was one jyou, two shaku (3.64m) and its diameter was one jyou, eight shaku (5.45m).

A woman (or girl) was found inside this boat and her age appeared around twenty. She was about five shaku (1.5m) tall and her skin was white as snow. Her long hair vividly hung on her back. Her facial features were incomparably beautiful. Her clothes were strange and unrecognizable and her language was not understood by anyone. She held a small box in her hands and prohibited anyone from approaching this box.

Reports of small wolf-like canids came out of the Chichibu district of Japan in 1998. At least seventy people reported wolf howls in 1994, and there have been at least twenty-six claims of wolves seen from 1908 to 1978, all in the Aomori and Oita regions in northernmost Japan, not to mention prints, howls and scat. Several sightings have also been made on the Kii peninsula. In 1936a man in Hongu supposedly captured a wolf pup, but released it in case a parent attempted to retrieve it. The Honshu wolf (Canis lupus hodophylax) a dwarf subspecies of wolf just over a foot tall and deemed extinct since 1905 due to a rabies epidemic, fits the general description. Attempts to record wolves howling, by playing wolf howls to prompt them in 1995 were unsuccessful. Possibly these sightings are just misidentification of feral dogs. However, though Japan is heavily populated, its mountainous terrain would make it possible for a hidden population of wolves – in this case, small wolves - to survive without public acknowledgment. - Cryptid Canids

At around 11 PM on August 1, 1984 in the town of Tsushima in Nagasaki prefecture, a squid fisherman named Ryu Shirozaki was walking home from the local pier after work. As he passed near the Kuta river, he came upon a small group of children playing at the water's edge. While it was not entirely uncommon to encounter people fishing in the river at night, it was rather surprising to see youngsters there.

As Shirozaki approached the children, he was struck by how bizarre they appeared in the moonlight. He could make out swarthy faces, unusually spindly arms and legs, and glistening skin. Suspicious, Shirozaki called out to them as he neared, but they seemed startled and quickly disappeared into the water.

The next morning when he returned to the same spot, Shirozaki discovered a set of moist, teardrop-shaped footprints on the nearby pavement. The prints, which appeared to consist of a slimy substance that had begun to coagulate under the hot morning sun, stretched for about 20 meters. Each footprint measured 22 centimeters (about 10 in) long and 12 centimeters (5 in) wide, and they were spaced about 50 to 60 centimeters (about 2 ft) apart.

Shirozaki and a few curious onlookers immediately suspected the footprints belonged to a kappa. People began to gather around as the news spread quickly through town, and all agreed the prints belonged to a kappa. In the minds of many residents, the footprints confirmed the existence of the river imps they knew through local legends.

When police forensic investigators arrived on the scene, they determined that the slimy footprints consisted of an unknown secretion. They took a sample to the lab for analysis, but the results unfortunately turned out to be inconclusive because the sample was too small. The police eventually dropped their investigation, and the mystery of the slimy footprints was never solved.

Another recent kappa encounter occurred on June 30, 1991 in the town of Saito in Miyazaki prefecture, when an office worker named Mitsugu Matsumoto and his wife Junko returned home for the evening. Upon opening the front door, the Matsumotos were confronted with a strange smell inside their home. Inside, they found dozens of small, wet footprints around the front door and in the hallway, bathroom, and two tatami rooms. At first they suspected a burglar, but they soon realized nothing had been stolen.

The police briefly surveyed the house, but found nothing except a floor soiled by 30 footprints, each measuring about 7 centimeters long and 6 centimeters wide, and having 4 or 5 toes. To Matsumoto, the footprints did not look human, nor did they appear to belong to any animal he could imagine.

Later that night, as Mrs. Matsumoto was putting laundry away, she discovered an unusual orange stain on some clothing. The next morning, as Matsumoto inspected the house more closely, he discovered a deposit of orange liquid on the portable stereo in the tatami room. He took a sample to the local public health center for analysis, and the results indicated the liquid had an extremely high iron content and a chemical composition resembling spring water.

Troubled by the incident, Matsumoto decided to visit a shaman. After listening to Matsumoto's story, the shaman encouraged him not to worry, explaining that the kappa indigenous to the nearby swamp enjoyed playing the occasional prank on local residents. The kappa were harmless, the shaman told him.

Harmless, perhaps, but Matsumoto found the kappa difficult to clean up after. He tried using detergent, paint thinner and gasoline to remove the footprints and orange stains, but nothing seemed to work.

In 2000, Yoshii, Okayama, Japan was in the news, as people were flocking to the region to hunt for the tsuchinoko, a chirping reptile-like cryptid bearing at least some resemblance to a snake or a long, thick lizard. A 20 million yen reward from the Yoshii Municipal Government was the source of all the excitement.

Tsuchinoko fever hit Yoshii on May 21 after a farmer cutting grass swore he saw a snake-like creature with a face resembling the cartoon cat Doraemon slither across his field. The farmer slashed the creature with his weed whipper, but it fled into a nearby stream and escaped. Four days later, 72-year-old Hideko Takashima was talking with a couple of friends in Yoshii when she found what she thought was one of the creatures lying dead next to the stream a tsuchinoko reportedly had dived into to escape from the farmer. She picked it up and buried it.

Yoshii Municipal Government officials heard the rumors of a tsuchinoko and headed out to look over the local woman’s find. They exhumed the body and forwarded it to Kawasaki University of Medical Welfare to be examined. Kuniyasu Sato, the professor who analyzed the reptile, said that the animal may indeed have been the tsuchinoko, but “scientifically speaking, it was a kind of snake.”

Meanwhile, Mitsuko Arima, an 82-year-old from Yoshii, says she saw a Tsuchinoko swimming along a river on the morning of June 15.

“I was surprised. I just pointed at it and asked ‘Who are you? Who are you?’ It didn’t answer me, but just stared. It had a round face and didn’t take its eyes off me. I can still see the eyes now. They were big and round and it looked like they were floating on the water,” Arima says. “I’ve lived over 80 years, but I’d never seen anything like that in my life.” - The Top Cryptozoology Stories of 2000

Kofu, Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan - February 23, 1975

Between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m., two seven-year-old boys named Kono and Yamahata watched a luminous orange UFO approach Kofu, Japan while making a "ticking" sound. It landed on three ball-shaped legs in a nearby vineyard. The object was a domed disc, five meters in diameter and six feet high. The boys got very close to it, and discovered the surface of the object was silver colored and had strange characters embossed on its surface.

A ladder extended out of the craft down to the ground, and a humanoid creature slightly over four feet tall disembarked. It wore a silver uniform and carried something that looked like a gun. His skin was dark brown and he had large pointed ears, but his large head had no facial features: no eyes, nose or mouth. It merely had wrinkles on the "face" and three silvery two-inch long "fangs" where the mouth should be. Both boys could see one more smaller humanoid in the cockpit. The being that had emerged reached out and touched one of the boys, patting him twice on the shoulder and uttering words "like a tape recorder running backwards." The boy who had been touched sat down, paralyzed either by the touch or fear, but his companion took him on his back and carried him from the vineyard. They then ran to one of the boy's homes and informed their parents, who could at first see the orange light pulsating in the vineyard. Then it disappeared as they watched. Two concrete posts were found pushed over at the landing site.

Doctors Remove World's Largest Malignant Tumor

dailymail - Doctors have removed a tumor weighing nearly four stone from a woman in Argentina. It had been growing inside her body for 18 months.

The huge three stone 8.7lbs growth was taken out of the 54-year-old's womb during a four-hour operation at a hospital near the capital Buenos Aires.

The unnamed patient was discharged weighing just over 16 and a half stone - five stone 7lbs less than when she was admitted.

Medics say they believe the malignant tumor is the biggest ever removed in the world. Malignant tumors of this type usually weigh between 4lbs and 7lbs.

Lead surgeon Dr Oscar Lopez said: 'I've never seen anything like it in my 34 years of medical service.

'In medical literature a giant tumor is one that weighs more than 8.8lbs. But we've not found any references to a larger tumor.

'Its weight is comparable to that of a four-year-old boy's. In layman's terms, it was as if this woman had been pregnant with quintuplets.

'I haven't been able to establish its length but it's diameter is similar to the oil cans they sell in petrol stations.'

The woman, who comes from the town of Lomas de Zamora on the outskirts of Buenos Aires where the surgery took place, had suffered constant abdominal growth for the past year and a half.

She had trouble performing everyday tasks like walking and bending down to tie up her shoe laces.

She was referred to Gandulfo Hospital, where surgeons operated on her, from another medical centre.

A team of specialists performed a laparotomy on the woman. This meant they cut through her abdominal wall before separating her intestines and bladder and removing her uterus, ovaries and the tumor.

The woman is now back at home after being kept in hospital for five days following the operation.

Rare ‘Fire Tornado’ Filmed in Brazil

Click for video

A fire tornado caused by brush fires and strong winds has stopped motorway traffic as drivers in Brazil gawped at the rare phenomenon.

The whirlwind of flames burned through fields beside the road in the northwest city of Aracatuba in Sao Paulo state. But, as quickly as it appeared, the roaring twister fizzled down and just a smouldering line in the land remained.

The firestorm followed a drought which has led to brush fires across Brazil. Fire tornados, also known as fire whirls or fire devils, are rare and depend on certain air temperatures and currents to create a vertical, rotating column of air.

Taliban Continues to Poison Schoolgirls

CNN - Dozens of schoolgirls and teachers were sickened Wednesday by poison gas in Afghanistan, medical and government officials said.

The latest incident, this one at a high school, is the ninth such case involving the poisoning of schoolgirls, said Asif Nang, spokesman for the nation's education ministry.

Dr. Kabir Amiri said 59 students and 14 teachers were brought to the hospital, and were faring better.

"We don't have good equipment to verify the kind of gas that they were poisoned with, but we have taken their blood tests to send to Turkmenistan for verifying the type of gas" that was used, Amiri said.

Many Afghan girls were not allowed to attend school during the Taliban's rule from 1996 to 2001. Girls' schools began reopening after the Islamist regime was toppled. The United Nations children's agency, UNICEF, estimates that 2 million Afghan girls attend school these days.

But female educational facilities, students and teachers have come under vicious attack as the insurgency has strengthened and spread from Taliban strongholds in the southern provinces of Kandahar and Helmand.

A report compiled last year by the humanitarian agency CARE documented 670 education-related attacks in 2008, including murder and arson. Much of the violence in what CARE called an "alarming trend" occurred at girls' schools.

Reporter Jessica Kastrop was the ultimate professional as a stray kick struck her at more than 100mph during a pre-match warm up.

The German's head was sent plunging forward with the massive impact but incredibly she bounced right back.

The ball had been kicked by former Chelsea star Khalid Boulahrouz who dispatched a long-range effort during practice ahead of a Bundesliga pre-season clash in Stuttgart.

It hit her with such force her knees buckled and she had to brace herself against a lectern to stop herself collapsing in a heap.

Jessica said afterwards: "I was fine - eventually. Boulahrouz ran over to me straight away and apologised."

The Roswell Incident: Ohio Truck Driver's Close Encounter

cantonrep - Ralph A. Multer was a wounded World War II veteran who walked with a limp and exhibited a gruff exterior. He liked to spin stories about his days as a gunner’s mate on a Navy warship, including ones about the Battle of Iwo Jima. Multer worked on cars and rode a motorcycle. His nickname was “Bear,” a reference to his large frame. And on occasion, he enjoyed a few swallows of vodka.

At 22 and married, Multer worked hard to support his wife, driving a truck for the Timken Co.

He wasn’t normally given to far-flung tales of flying saucers and little green men. Until, that is, the summer of 1947.

Multer is said to be a local connection to the most famous UFO story in world history: The alleged crash of an alien spacecraft near Roswell, N.M., in July 1947.

He told loved ones he hauled material from the crashed spaceship to one of the Timken plants in Canton, OH that summer. A Timken furnace could not dent, damage or melt the UFO wreckage. Not even slightly.

An FBI agent made it very clear. Don’t tell anybody about the covert operation. Keep it hush-hush.

That’s a fascinating story. A whopper. Is it true? Can it be verified? Especially when you consider Multer died in 1982. Could a company of Timken’s iconic stature be complicit in perhaps the greatest government cover-up of all time?

July 8, 1947. UFO historians consider that a monumental date. It is when the Roswell Army Air Field issued a press release that a crashed flying disk had been recovered in the New Mexico desert.

The military quickly changed its story. A second press release stated the 509th Bomb Group at the Roswell base mistakenly had identified a weather balloon as flying saucer wreckage.

Legions of UFO buffs believe the Roswell story. Researchers and authors have interviewed hundreds of people on the subject, including former military officers. Some believers have obtained once-classified documents, connecting the dots to conclude that the government concealed the crash and stashed away dead aliens with balloon-shaped heads, large eyes and child-like bodies.

Others declare the Roswell story to be a ridiculous myth borne out of wild imaginations. They contend it’s utter nonsense concocted by nuts who are loose with the facts and heavy on speculation. They argue the UFO crowd has yet to produce hard evidence, such as a hunk of the damaged flying saucer.

Multer was a believer. He became one 63 years ago while working a four-hour shift for Timken.

Multer told his wife the story. Years later, he shared it with his daughter.

It was August or September. Multer had hoped to finish the shift and meet his wife for lunch. But the normalcy of the day quickly faded.

Multer said he and two other drivers were asked to pick up loads at a railroad yard. Three flatbed trucks, covered with canvas, carried the loads.

The load on Multer’s truck was the largest. The convoy of trucks was escorted by officials of some type. Multer had some level of security clearance at the company.

FBI agents had met the trio of truck drivers. Multer asked about the loads. An agent told him they were parts of a flying saucer recovered in New Mexico. The strength and durability of the material would be tested in a super-hot Timken furnace.

“They talked to a person later who was there that night (at one of the Timken plants), and they said they couldn’t cut it, they couldn’t even heat it,” said Sundi Multer-Lingle, Multer’s daughter. “The piece of metal, well I don’t know if you can call it metal, the object was absolutely impenetrable.”

Metallic. Lightweight. Silver or dark gray. That’s how her father described the mysterious material.

“We grew up with the story,” said Multer-Lingle, 58, who was born in Canton and lives in Knoxville, Tenn. “Dad would put us up on his lap, and he would tell us the story.”

He never changed his story. Or added details, she said.

“Dad wasn’t a liar at all,” Multer-Lingle said. “I mean, if he told you something, you believed it because that’s just how he was, and I heard this so many times and so much that we never doubted it.”

Multer’s late wife told UFO researchers the experience left a lasting impression on her husband. It “never left his mind from then on,” she said in an interview in the 1990s.

Roswell-related stories inundate the Internet. Books, movies and television documentaries transformed the Roswell story into a pop culture phenomenon. A museum in Roswell is dedicated to the topic. The Roswell UFO Festival takes place each July. A website for the Roswell newspaper features UFO-themed merchandise for sale.

Tucked away on a handful of websites, the Multer story keeps a low profile in the world of sensational UFO accounts. Multer’s Roswell story apparently is not mentioned in any book.

At the International UFO Museum and Research Center in Roswell, a search through the library’s database and archives turned up nothing about Multer and Timken as they relate to the UFO crash story, a museum employee said.

In the mid-1990s, William E. Jones and Irena McCammon Scott uncovered Multer’s story. That’s when Multer’s wife was interviewed. The duo co-authored an article about Multer in the Ohio UFO Notebook in 1994 as part of a compilation of pieces titled, “The Ohio UFO Crash Connection and Other Stories.”

Up until then, Ralph’s story had been a well-kept family secret, said Multer-Lingle. Outsiders weren’t privy to it. Multer’s wife, Violet M. Brown, died in 2009; at the time of her death, she was known as Vikki May Black.

Stricken with health problems, Ralph had died nearly 20 years earlier.

“I remember we went up to Timken (in Canton) and interviewed some people,” said Scott, 102, the UFO researcher who helped break the Multer story. “But I don’t remember how we got the story to start.”

Multer’s story is difficult to verify. According to records from the Golden Lodge United Steelworkers Local 1123, Multer left Timken in 1952. His daughter says that is when the family moved to the Portsmouth area in Scioto County, where Multer then worked as a railroad brakeman.

Timken spokeswoman Lorrie Paul Crum said Multer worked with the company in the early 1950s, initially in the steel operations and later as a truck driver. However, a search didn’t turn up all of the company records on Multer, Crum said.

“We didn’t have his beginning employment records,” she said.

“We had partial records. We don’t keep them for all the employees.”

Multer could have worked at Timken in 1947, said Tom Sponhour, editor of the Golden Lodge News, noting records can be sketchy that far back.

“We talked with retirees and executives familiar with all facets of ... Timken’s long-standing relationships with government and scientific organizations serving as one of the world’s foremost experts in metallurgy,” Crum said.

But “no one had any recollection of Multer’s story,” she wrote in an e-mail response.

The Repository contacted several Timken retirees who worked for the company in the late 1940s and early 1950s.

Only one recalled hearing about Multer. Dominick T. Rex got a job at Timken in 1946 in the roller bearings plant.

“It was just a rumor about a truck driver (who) did something,” Rex recalled. “He did something, and it was Ralph.”

But the 84-year-old does not recall anything about a crashed UFO.

Scott, one of the UFO investigators who co-authored the original story about Multer, said she and the other researcher visited Timken in the mid-1990s to inquire about the former truck driver and Roswell.

None of the retired management and engineer employees contacted by UFO investigators had heard of the alleged Canton connection to Roswell, said Scott, who worked on satellite photography in the 1960s for the Defense Intelligence Agency. She is a former biology professor at St. Bonaventure University.

“I don’t have a firm conclusion,” she said of the alleged UFO crash.

The U.S. Department of Defense did not respond to a phone inquiry or e-mail from The Repository seeking comment about Roswell-related events in 1947 and Multer’s story. The agency forwarded the call Thursday to the U.S. Air Force.

As of Friday, the Air Force had not replied. In the mid-1990s, the Air Force issued two in-depth reports, following an inquiry by the General Accounting Office, in an effort to debunk the Roswell story.

Stanton T. Friedman, a well-known researcher and author in the UFO field, said he had not heard of a Canton link to Roswell. Friedman co-authored a book on the topic, “Crash at Corona: The Definitive Study of the Roswell Incident.”

Friedman, however, said he’s well aware of Timken.

“They’re a major company, and they had major responsibilities during the war,” he said.

“Timken probably would have had a reputation for developing very strong materials at very high temperatures,” said Friedman, 76, a nuclear physicist.

After exhaustive research, including interviews and an examination of countless government records, Friedman said he firmly believes that a UFO crashed near Roswell in 1947.

Donald R. Schmitt has been researching Roswell-related events the last 21 years. He has co-authored multiple books on the subject, including, “Witness to Roswell: Unmasking the Government’s Biggest Cover-up.”

“This is the granddaddy of them all,” Schmitt said of the Roswell story. “If we solve this, the entire mystery is solved.”

Schmitt is intrigued by Multer’s account. “This is another piece of the puzzle,” he said. Schmitt said he’s heard “eyewitness accounts” about material being loaded on freight cars near the former Roswell Army Air Field.

“All aftermath, all arrows point directly to Ohio,” Schmitt said of Roswell, referring to other alleged Ohio connections, including Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.

"Why would (Multer) lie to his wife about this?,” Schmitt said. “He didn’t profit (from) this, he didn’t gain any notoriety or any publicity, he didn’t do any talk shows or any interviews.”

Schmitt said he’s 99 percent certain a UFO crashed in the Roswell area.

“That remaining 1 percent is the remaining 1 percent of the curiosity until we get a piece of the holy grail,” he added. “I do accept the challenge of the true skeptic, not the scoffer, but the skeptic who would remind us until you come up with the piece of the actual hardware, a piece of the ship, you won’t have 100 percent.”

Reports On Memory-Metal Nitinol 'Missing'

heraldtribune - With a boost from Sarasota resident Tony Bragalia, the enduring Roswell UFO controversy is about to swing the spotlight onto one of the most successful research and development entities in America — Battelle Memorial Institute in Columbus, OH.

At issue are some missing reports from Battelle’s study of a nickel/titanium alloy called Nitinol, renowed for its resilience as a “memory metal.” Contracted by the U.S. Air Force to assess and exploit its compelling properties in the late 1940s, Battelle participates in or manages six national laboratories for the U.S. Department of Energy, including Oak Ridge, Lawrence Livermore, and Brookhaven.

The problem is, neither Battelle nor the USAF can produce copies of what the scientific literature refers to as the “Second Progress Report on Contract AF33 (038)-3736.” Bragalia suspects that’s because the data is still highly classified due to its source — a flying disc that crashed outside Roswell, N.M., in 1947.

“Personal testimony is one thing,” says Bragalia, whose research skills have been polished by his business as an executive-search consultant. “But when you start talking about documents and the history of science, unlike testimonials, their provenance is not questioned.”

Bragalia says his curiosity about the Roswell debris began accelerating in 2007, shortly after a retired Army Air Force veteran from Ellenton named Ben Games told De Void a tale that no one had ever heard before — in July of 1947, he flew Gen. Laurence Craigie to Roswell during the furor over the alleged UFO recovery.

As chief of the Research and Engineering Division at AAF headquarters, Craigie had offices at the Pentagon and at present-day Wright-Patterson AFB in Ohio. In October 1947, he became Director of Research and Development for the U.S. Air Force. At the end of the year, he authorized the first-ever USAF study of flying saucers. From 1948-50, he served as commandant of the USAF Institute of Technology at Wright-Pat.

In 1991, retired brigadier general Arthur Exon confirmed for author/investigators Schmitt and Kevin Randle that the Roswell debris was transferred to Wright Field in ‘47. Civilians and military personnel who handled the stuff compared some components to aluminum foil, except that it would conform to its original shape after being crumpled.

Exon, a lieutenant colonel on base at the time, said lab chiefs in charge of testing the material “knew they had something new in their hands. The metal and material was unknown to anyone I talked to.” However, Exon, who was promoted to Wright-Pat base commander in 1964, never had access to the debris.

But who did? And if, as skeptics contend, the thing that went down in Roswell was simply a classified but hardly exotic balloon project, why did Craigie make a hurried flight to New Mexico from Washington?

Enter Nitinol, which made its debut in 1939. The nickel/titanium metal was created as a byproduct of another project and initially studied for its crystalline structures. Bragalia was unable to find any research on its shape-recovery properties until encountering references to a WPAFB contract with Battelle produced in 1949.

Its “Second Progress Report” — authored by Battelle employees listed only as C.M. Craighead, F. Fawn, and L.W. Eastwood — implies a first progress report, for which Bragalia could find no references at all. Although unable to get his hands on the “Second Progress Report,” Bragalia lists four references to its existence in 1952, 1965, 1972, and 1984.

Bragalia didn’t read the “Second Progress Report” because nobody appears to know where it is. Kemberly Lang, manager of the Battelle Library, couldn’t find a copy, and neither could Annette Sheppard, special collection librarian at WPAFB. Lang reconfirmed to De Void her futility at learning anything about the 60-year-old project beyond published references to it.

“There’s something strange going on here, but there is no copy of the contract. And Wright-Patterson doesn’t have it, either. Evidently it was never submitted for retention,” says Lang, who coordinated her search efforts with WPAFB. “Both sides have miraculously lost their copies of it.

“I don’t know what’s in it, I don’t have a clue. I don’t think there’s anything malicious going on, but it’s kind of in my ‘open’ file now. It’s a mystery.”

Bragalia doubts the USAF farmed out the actual Roswell debris to Battelle. More likely, he suspects its scientists were tasked to simulate its morphing abilities through Nitinol, which requires 99.99 percent purity and the application of heat.

Curiously, Braglia says military reports announcing the unveiling of Nitinol as a memory metal cite every year from 1959 to 1963 as its point of discovery. The last word from the U.S. Naval Ordnance Lab lists its debut as 1962 or 1963.

Today, Nitinol has blossomed into the commercial sector, finding its way into everything from medical hardware to bendable eyeglass frames. Among the most ambitious firms incorporating the latest generation of metallic elasticity into a vast array of products is LiquidMetal Technologies, a publicly traded R&D company headquartered in Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.

Attributing its “amorphous alloys” to researchers from California Institute of Technology — managed by Battelle in cooperation with Lawrence-Livermore — LiquidMetal’s Web site says it has collaborated on “numerous shuttle missions for NASA scientists to study its technology in space first hand.”

“The NASA connection is huge,” says Bragalia. “When you begin taking stuff into space and testing it under microgravity conditions, it allows you to develop material of exceptional purity.”

Battelle, listed as a charitable trust exempt from taxation, is most famously known in UFO circles for producing a 1954 Air Force Project Blue Book study called Special Report No. 14. Concluding that 21.5 percent of UFOs in the military database were unknowns, Battelle directly contradicted then USAF Secretary Donald Quarles’ assertion that only 3 percent of its sightings were unknown.

“Battelle is very artful at concealing its connections,” says Bragalia. “When people say ‘the government’ knows about UFOs, I wonder. Especially when you consider that Battelle has more or less privatized six of our national laboratories.”

USAF Documents Confirm Roswell Crash Debris Examined

newsvine - A research study that has recently been obtained through FOIA offers stunning confirmation that Wright-Patterson Air Force base contracted Battelle Memorial Institute to analyze material from a crashed UFO at Roswell in 1947. Remarkably, the co-author of this very metals study is the same scientist who decades ago had confessed that he had examined extraterrestrial metal from a crashed UFO while he was a research scientist at Battelle! This just-received document also reveals that another one of its metallurgist authors reported directly to a Battelle scientist who was conducting secret UFO studies for the USAF. It appears that the study represents first-ever attempts in creating highly novel and advanced Titanium alloys. Some of these alloys were later associated with the development of "memory metal" of the type reported as crash debris at Roswell.

Timken Roller Bearing Company

In 1899, Henry Timken and his sons, H.H. Timken and William Timken, established the Timken Roller Bearing and Axle Company in St. Louis, Missouri. This firm initially manufactured tapered roller bearings for the use in wagons. Timken's bearings helped wagons make easier turns and also improved their maneuverability in other ways. In 1901, the Timkens relocated the company to Canton, Ohio, where the firm became known as the Timken Roller Bearing Company.

The Timken Company's bearings became in great demand, especially as the automotive industry originated during the first decades of the twentieth century. Timken bearings were used in the Marmon Wasp, the first car to win the Indy 500. In 1917, the Timken Company constructed its first steel mill to provide the firm with a steady supply of steel to manufacture its products. Beginning in the 1920s, the company increasingly began to use its bearings in the manufacture of agricultural and mining equipment, and during World War II, besides providing the United States military with bearings, the business also manufactured gun barrels and steel tubing.
