Statement with video: May 10, 2010 — "This one is odd. It's from this morning. My daughter that's in the room said she wasn't singing it and my other daughter that was out side of the room said she wasn't. I know she wasn't for sure because I can hear her at the end of the vid. My wife also says it isn't her. All three of them say they don't know the song. I don't know the song either. I'm hoping one of you viewer can name it, so I can do some research on it. I can't prove nobody in my house isn't singing this, but I can tell everyone says they didn't. Is it paranormal? Not sure, I really have a hard time believing I'd could pick up an evp that would go on this long and clear."
NOTE: this video is from DIG Paranormal. The videographer questioned his wife and two daughters about the voice. Not only do they say they were not singing, none were able to identify the song that is being sung. You can see other videos (those not made private) at doorwaysmag and Facebook page at DIG Paranormal...Lon
balkaninsight - Seers of the future or charlatans of the highest order, whatever your view, many Serbian’s can’t get enough of the ‘advice’ delivered on TV, online and in person.
Serbians are a deeply religious people devoted to their Christian orthodoxy, but this devout nature is also deeply steeped in superstition which dates back to pre-Christian paganism and a culture of mythology, local folklore and superstition, linked together with customs and an oral storytelling tradition. Some of these traditions still live on today and have become incorporated into daily rituals of this country of believers.
Made curious by the various superstitions, rituals and non-religious beliefs practiced by locals, we decided to explore this realm further, and look into our metaphorical crystal ball in an attempt to perceive what local mystics, seers, fortune tellers and psychics claim to see.
Superstition and belief in the unknown, the supernatural, and the seemingly irrational, goes deep into the national psyche. When swine flu hit Serbia last year, instead of lining up like other people world over for inoculations, locals instead put their health and faith in natural remedies and the sale of garlic rose drastically, raising prices of the powerful bulb.
Maybe this is also why, before the wars of the 1990s, thousands of Belgraders tuned-in to to watch and take heed from an eccentric cross-dressing transvestite and self proclaimed prophet on national television. She was known as the mysterious Kleopatra, and became famous predicting the future of anyone who would call, covering issues from marriage and problems of finding a mate, to the possible times, places and dates of NATO bombings during the conflict in Kosovo.
In many ways, things are no different now. An even more famous soothsayer, ‘Milan Tarot’ regularly appears on national TV shows and has a horde of fanatic followers who hang on his every word. He takes calls, and only answers if the caller repeats the word ‘Tarot’ several times when greeting him. Cheeky and slightly macabre, his advice is impulsive, terse, and almost always ironic and he hangs up on callers after giving his ‘reading’ and the advice he gleans from magical tarot cards he scuffs around a velvet clad table.
He will often offer up the names of famous people the caller might not know, but savvy TV viewers might. A woman asks “Who will my daughter marry? He answers: “She will travel to Istanbul, meet a guy named ‘Cristiano Ronaldo’ and be happily wed”. Now any football fan will get the cruel joke, but the middle-aged mother calling from Krusevac might just be in the dark about being the but of his joke.
Other ridiculous advice he has given callers wanting to get rid of curses is to run around their houses three times and then urinate on the yard facing north. Or to break eggs on their head while whistling. He has become such an icon of the dramatic, that a local film production company ‘Red Productions’ made a documentary on the fellow called ‘Tarot Srbija’. The film premiered last week at the Beldocs film festival in Belgrade to positive reviews. The film follows ‘Milan Tarot’ – real name Milan Radonjic - around the country, as he attempts to heal the locals and solve their numerous and sometimes unbelievable problems. The cult following throw money at him, as he parades around in the guise of his alter ego as a way to calm, reassure and console rural populations who are his most ardent viewers.
The film advances a theory that local people, still unsure about their future, cling to superstitions to feel reassured about change, to take control of their destinies and to get a handle on the uncertainty that has been a large part of their recent lives.
What is tarot? A simple example would be a set of 22 playing cards which have allegorical images representing various objects, animals, forms or influences that affect and represent human life and conditions. Its most popular use is for divination and fortune-telling. To think of it as a card game is to be greatly mistaken. The tradition of Tarot has endured many centuries and has passed through many cultures and interpretations. Though the origin of tarot is cloudy, the cards were first documented in Italy in the fifteenth century as a popular card game among the wealthy. It was later in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, that the cards were used by a number of influential ‘scholars’ of the occult and magical arts.
They connected images on the tarot cards to Egyptian figures, hermetic philosophy, the kabbalah, freemasonry, alchemy, and other mystical and secret systems. This continued into the twentieth century, until tarot and tarot readings were incorporated into the practices of popular culture.
At the ‘Tarot Skola’ in Belgrade, the head teacher, Snezana Loncina, disagrees with the popular approach. In Serbian, she explained that “Tarot and Runes are not just for telling the future that is the lowest form of its function. They are tools for self-actualisation and realisation, and to connect the conscious mind to the higher powers of the universe”.
The General Manager of the school, Sava Kovacevic, agrees that Tarot should be used more as a transformational tool and not for exploiting the gullible and innocent for the sake of cashing in. “People are in spiritual chaos and tarot is a method and means to a goal, which is self-discovery and actualisation, Money is not the goal,” he assured us.
Snezana explained that a reading should be based on the belief that the cards can be used to gain insight into the current and possible future situations of the person being read. She believes the cards help her commune with the Divine. Snezana says that her approach differs greatly from the ranting and raving of most tarot readers seen on television or online.
Serbia has a wonderful range of superstitions that locals observe. Especially when it comes to family, Serbs have a whole set of unwritten rules they follow to stave off the infamous ‘evil eye’ and protect their loved ones. There are no ‘baby showers’ in Serbia. Etiquette demands that one should never buy a baby gifts until it has been born. And when it is, make sure to call the newborn baby ugly. If you say anything good, the infant will be vulnerable to the evil eye.
Women that want to get married should never sit at the corner of the table otherwise they will remain single. Women who also want babies should beware of the draught: the Serbian word for it is ‘Promaja’. And if the promaja doesn’t get you, exposing the stomach or backside to this cold air will inevitably lead to frozen ovaries and infertility. The same goes for female feet and the obsession with slippers – in fact it’s a surprise any children are born in Serbia.
Going on a trip? Make sure that nobody washes your clothes whilst you are away or you might never come back. If someone visits you and you don’t want them to come again, just clean the floor immediately after they leave. And the broom you just used, place it in the corner where it can be seen, as it brings good luck and keeps bad spirits away. But never let somebody sweep that broom in your direction or you will never find a spouse. Still keeping up?
So now that you’re thoroughly wrapped up, you’ve insulted your friend’s children and there’s a pile of dirty washing next to kitchen broom you’re covered, right?
Well, that all depends on the omens because if your nose itches you’ll either be getting into a fight or drinking soon. And heaven forbid that your right hand should itch, for you’re going to lose money. Of course, if your left hand is itching in the centre of the palm, you’re going to get money soon or meet someone new.
Your spoon falls to the floor. That’s fortunate because the next person to enter the room will be a sweet, good woman. If it’s a fork it will be an angry one, and if it’s a knife, it indicates a man’s arrival. If you’ve forgotten something at home, don’t go back! It’s very bad luck, especially before a long journey. If you really need to go back, make sure to look in a mirror before you leave the house again to reverse the luck. If someone sneezes while you’re speaking, you’re likely to hear “Istina, Istina” (True, True). This omen is proof that you’re speaking the truth. Blame it all on Serbian logic.
Even Ana Ivanovic, famous Serbian Women’s Tennis Player apparently can’t resist. She won’t step on tennis court lines before a match. We could go on and on, but suffice to say that Serbia and Serbian’s have attached a portent, an omen or a folksy saying for almost every aspect of daily life.
Some Well-known Serbian Superstitions:
Hiccups are caused by people talking about you.
If you whistle while in someone’s house (or your own), you will attract mice and rats.
If you put on a t-shirt inside-out unwittingly, it means that someone is missing you.
If you put on underwear inside-out by mistake, you’ll be followed by good luck.
A loaf of bread must never be upside down, it brings misfortune.
Leaving a bag or purse on the floor will cause you to lose money.
Sitting at a corner-seat at of a table means you’ll remain single forever.
Having long fingers means you’ll probably become a thief or that you’ll steal something.
Having a v-shaped hairline on your forehead means you’ll be a widow (widow’s peak)
If you bite your tongue or cheek by accident, your granny is planning to bake for you.
Having your right palm itch means you will spend money soon, while having your left palm itch means you’ll be getting money soon
Always look into someone’s eyes when clinking glasses, failure will result in 7 disastrous years in the bedroom.
Never say “Ziveli” (Cheers) with something that isn’t alcohol, i.e. water.
Always take a sip from the glass after toasting before putting the glass back on the table.
The following videos are from mellowb1rd who claims to be capturing poltergeist activity in his home. Look at the few videos I've posted...then go to his YouTube channel and observe the remainder of his videos. He does make an attempt to answer questions raised by viewers. I'm not going to give an opinion other than to say that these are very interesting. Please feel free to offer an opinion.
May 09, 2010 — I caught this poltergeist activity on Saturday the xx of May (Someone tell me what the date was yesterday, please) I was going to be out of the house for a few hours and didn't really feel like going to the trouble of setting up any video cameras. I'm glad I did now. I may also have caught some good footage in the kitchen too, but it's about 50/50 as to whether any of happened on camera. I haven't had a chance to watch the tape yet, but, if I caught anything, I'll upload it after work tomorrow.
April 25, 2010 — I rarely leave a camera in my attic because it's hot as hell, but that's where the banging noises seem to be coming from. This poltergeist activity occurred at about 6:15pm on Thursday the whatever of April.
December 13, 2009 — This poltergeist activity occurred today. (13th December, 2009) I decided to stay home and answer some of your questions due to an unfortunate paintball "accident" but was interrupted.
UPDATE: Chris Halton sent me a message in reference to these videos and his attempt to contact mellowb1rd: I wrote to Mellowbird months ago when this `phenomenon` was first being shown on YouTube. I asked questions about frequency of occurrences and relevant times and stated I would be honoured to be allowed to investigate and share any findings with him. He refused to answer on the THREE occasions I wrote. That was telling. I think most sincerely that this guy is a faker.
Each occurrence is carefully staged and then sequenced together to make one long running incident.
If anyone lived in a house that has this regular and violent activity, why wouldn`t they get the big papers involved or TV media who would pay well to witness this level of activity? But instead he chooses to share it on YouTube.
I intend (when I get a chance) to show YouTube viewers how it`s done. It`s easier than you think. You`ll notice I haven`t poltergeist activity on my files, but a video from a public house that claimed this activity. I found none there. I believe in poltergeist occurrences - just not his.
NOTE: I have also forwarded a message to mellowb1rd in reference to this 'poltergeist activity'. I hope for a response...Lon
I received several inquiries in regards to a personal experience I had and mentioned in a post I made at Chernobyl Harbinger of Catastrophe. This account was posted a while back but needed to have some clarifications added to the original post. At that time, I thought I was seeking a spirit or entity and brought some equipment to help in my pursuit. As well, I was sensitive and attuned to spiritual energy. I attempted to not be dramatic in the post but, frankly, it was one of my most alarming experiences to date...Lon
In early autumn 1988 I was at a local exhibition near Baltimore and bumped into Andy, an old friend who was there as part of a group from the Boy Scouts of York-Adams Area Council (Pa.). Both of us had been Boy Scouts together and I was happy to see that he continued as a troop leader. We decided to grab a bite to eat and catch up a bit...it had been 12 years since we had seen each other. After awhile, the subject of my paranormal investigations came into the conversation. He had always been fascinated with ghost sightings at Gettysburg and the surrounding area and had camped near the battlefield on several occasions.
Andy stated that a few of the local troops had recently been camping at the old Camp Conewago and some of the boys had reported hearing “crying” sounds and were spooked bad enough that a few left their campsites early. They had setup their campsites deeper than usual in the woods near the Conewago Creek fork (where the Little Conewago and main Conewago Creek meet). He stated that he and another scout leader were going to check out the area the following weekend and he wanted to know if I’d at least go up for the day and investigate with them. I accepted the invitation.
Camp Conewago is located north of New Oxford, Pa. in Adams County along the main Conewago Creek upstream from Dick’s Dam. It was established in 1919 for exclusive use by the local Boy Scouts of America. The area is rich in early colonial history since it was located on a major hunting route used by the Susquehannock Indians. Several attempts to establish settlements in this area failed because of Indian raids. As well, the Susquehannocks constantly warred with neighboring tribes. The Susquehannocks were eventually forced back into northeast Maryland and Delaware and the colonists were able to expand westward into the Allegheny Mountains. The area became an important trading stop for settlers to stock up on supplies and to get updates before heading into the wilderness.
I met with Andy and John the following Friday at the campground. I was shocked at how little the place had changed. A flood of boyhood memories came over me while I walked around the cabins and the administration building. Andy wanted to know how long I planned to stay and that they were going to setup camp in the same area of the reports. I was game….so I told him I’d stay for the weekend, grabbed my gear and followed them into the woods. I suppose we hiked about 500 yards or so before we came to the bank of the creek, then we followed the creek for another 300 yards until we came to the fork. We setup 3 tents and had a nice fire going in short order. It was around 7:00 pm by this time, so we decided stay close to camp for the remainder of the evening.
The first night was fairly uneventful, though I sensed that something was watching us. I didn’t say anything but kept my eyes open and head clear. These woods are somewhat thick with ground cover and are inhabited by a fair amount of wildlife, especially white-tailed deer and raccoons. I remember when I was a Boy Scout, the older kids would send out the new members of the scout troop on an initiation “snipe” hunt. They’d give the prospective “hunter” a burlap bag and a flashlight and set them out into the woods at night telling them they could return only after they caught a “snipe”. They were usually running back to the campsite within an hour scared to the point of tears. It was a bit cruel, but we all had to go through the indignity...it was a tradition.
The next morning was sunny and cool...a perfect day to explore the woods. We sat down to breakfast when John asked if we heard footsteps and movement during the night. Andy said he slept straight through the night. I said I heard some movement but assumed it was one of my companions. Nothing seemed to be disturbed in the campsite, so we dismissed it…though I still had this lingering sense that we were being watched. We spent the day walking for several miles through the woods and examining points of interest. I wasn’t picking up any spirit connections and started to think that this was going to be a quiet weekend. About 6:00 pm we got back to camp and sat down to talk about any little thing that came into our heads.
Later that evening, we were sitting around the fire engaged in a conversation about football when suddenly a scream rang out west and upstream from our location. I thought it sounded like an owl at first, but a few minutes later it happened again and it distinctively sounded like a child. I couldn’t tell how far away it was but it lasted for several seconds and seemed to fade in and out. We got up and walked a few yards into the woods expecting to hear the sound again. It was quiet for about an hour and we were discussing what could have naturally caused that sound. I have heard bobcats, owls and rabbits scream and none sounded close to this. We agreed that it was definitely the cries of a child.
We decided to stay up for the entire night. There was a full moon and much of the woods and creek were visible. We had cameras, a gauss meter, EMF detector and temperature sensor ready, though I rarely use these tools when I sense spirit activity initially. At approximately 1:00 am, I was walking the perimeter of our camp with the EMF detector when I received a spike on the gauge for a few seconds. I stood still and tried to figure out this feeling of being watched the entire weekend. I told Andy and John what I felt and we started to walk deeper into the woods towards the fork. We walked about 50 feet when, without warning, we recognized to our right a large dark figure with bright red eyes standing in the creek….and suddenly it shot straight up into the air with an audible “whoosh”. A few seconds later, we heard another scream that seemed to fade as if was moving away from us.
Above: The phantom was seen in the area marked...north of the Camp Conewago (Boy Scouts of America)
We hurried back to the campsite and compared thoughts about this phantom. Andy was shook up and didn’t talk for several minutes until I prodded him for his recollection. John was surprising calm and estimated that it was 6 foot or so, dark in color and seemed to have something extending from its back. I also noticed the structures on the back and commented that it reminded me of wings but I was unsure. We all agreed that it had bright red eyes. This creature or phantom jettisoned so fast that we didn’t even have time to get a flashlight on it. Andy wanted to spend the night in the administration building and come back and collect our gear in the morning. He and John walked back, but I decided to stay in the campsite for the remainder of the night. Nothing significant occurred though that feeling of being watched remained.
After the investigation and further research, I concluded that this creature or phantom was more than a simple spirit or residual energy. I was aware of the numerous sightings of a “Mothman” in West Virginia and it seemed that this being was somewhat similar in description...but I have significant doubt that it is a cryptid (NOTE: I have since changed my mind). Also, I cannot explain the EMF spike other than that separate spirit energy was also present, though I did not sense anything specific. I and other researchers have investigated this area since our sighting and have come up with minimal further evidence, though a report of a dark creature was made by a resident who lived near Dick’s Dam a few years later. The investigation remains open….hopefully I or someone else will be able to offer a plausible answer in the future.
NOTE: In 2008, I received an email from a man who lived a mile or so downstream from this incident (near Dick's Dam). He stated that he had heard similar screams for many years and that the frightful sounds continued to this day. A scout leader also emailed me approximately the same time and wanted to tell me that a few of the boys in his troop had witnessed what they described as a 'dragon' that was 6 foot tall with wings and a tail....but looked like it had fur or feathers. He said that the boys seemed serious but thought they were 'showing off' and dismissed their claims until later when he read the account of my experience.
Since that time, I have continued to check up on the area to see if anything strange develops. The Native American folklore and stories from settlers who inhabited the area offer several possibilities as to the identity of this cryptid but to date, I have not been able to make a plausible theory as to what is being heard or seen...Lon
I don't have any proof to validate the stories I am about to tell you other than my word. I can only relay my experiences and tell you a little about my background in hopes you won't think I'm off my rocker.
I haven't had dozens of paranormal experiences in my life. I haven't been abducted by aliens. I never had stories to tell around the campfire...but I sure do now.
I moved into a house last December 2009. My roommate has lived in the house her entire life off and on. The house was built by her grandparents in the 1920's. She and her sister both have had experiences in the house. She doesn't talk about it much because hello! it can make you sound crazy rambling about ghosts and such. In fact, she never told me about her experiences before I moved in. Convenient, huh?
At least 2 people have died in the house. Her great grandmother and her grandfather. Some lumber used in the house was salvaged from a home that burned down. I don't know the details of the fire whatsoever or if anyone really does.
So, I moved in. My room is upstairs, hers is down. Now I know why...because sh*t goes down upstairs. First Experience
I awoke from a dead sleep in the middle of the night around 3am which I almost never do. I sleep like a rock. I immediately got the heebie jeebies. I lay still and listened. I heard a creaking on the stairs and I was thinking "Oh great, someone is in here and I'm going to die now."
I froze and listened. My cat, who sleeps on the bed with me at my feet, jumped up, and ran up behind my head. I was petrified. I just laid there still...listening. I eventually fell back to sleep. No one can get in my home without making A LOT of noise. They would have to crash down the door or break a window. So, I knew no one was really there.
The fact that the cat responded to the incident freaked me out a little. Since I had been asleep...I was still groggy and fell back to sleep rather quickly. Everything was normal the next morning.
Now this one, I admit, just sounds crazy...like I've seen The Exorcist one too many times...you don't know me, but I'm not a liar and I don't make sh*t up.
It was pretty late...or early depending upon how you look at it. I was around 2:30am and I was reading before going to sleep. I had on my lamp, book in hand, and the cat was asleep in his spot.
All of a sudden the bed shook. It wasn't like the entire thing shook...the only thing I can liken it to is when you have an animal on the bed and they scratch and it shakes the bed. It felt like that and lasted about that long. Again, the cat was asleep...until this happened.
He jumped up and got down off the bed. He paced the room a couple of times staring and meowing at the ceiling. I didn't see anything. He jumped up on the desk to get closer and even put his front paws on the wall a couple of times. After about 20 minutes, he settled back down and went back to sleep. I, too, went to sleep.
Third Time's the Charm
The very next night...a bit earlier this time...around 11:30pm, I was reading in bed again. The cat was sleeping in his spot. It was the same scenario...just earlier. Again, the bed shook just like the night before. The cat looked up from his spot. The pupils in his eyes got large and he looked around a minute, and then laid his head down and went right back to sleep. Most Recently
...as in last night...I had been trying to go to sleep for a while after reading for a bit. The cat was...I dunno. He doesn't like his spot as well in the summer. I was laying on my left side facing the wall. I was almost asleep when I felt someone there behind me. Then I felt an arm beneath my shoulder. I never felt the hand slide in, it was just suddenly there. Then a gentle touch on my right side like where you might tickle someone in the ribs.
I thought it was my roommate at first telling me she was home from her 3rd shift job for some reason or other. At the exact same moment I went to roll back to ask if everything was okay, this guttural female voice said the same word three times quickly. It sounded like someone trying to talk with a bubble in their throat and the word sounded like "keyhole" or "guilt".
With the motion of my beginning to roll back, everything dissipated. I didn't feel the touch, heard nothing...it was REALLY weird.
I lay still with my eyes closed listening for several minutes. I didn't want to open my eyes because I am really not trying to SEE anything. That would freak me out to no end. About 5 minutes after the incident, the cat assumed his position on the bed and I finally fell asleep. NOTE: It seems like the writer has a curious entity about. I'm hoping it behaves...Lon
weatherspace - San Diego residents are reporting shaking continuing in the area. The shaking, according to the USGS, is likely due to the Easter quake this year which rocked the region.
Twitter is rolling with reports of rainbow cloud over Los Angeles today. Reports are coming in that this looks similar to before both the China and Chile quakes where residents reported and took photos of such events in the sky.

thesun - People will be given pills to live healthily beyond 100 within TWO YEARS, a top professor revealed yesterday.
The drugs - a spin-off from research into age-related illnesses such as Alzheimer's - are already being developed.
Professor Nir Barzilai, one of the world's leading experts on aging, said as he joined fellow scientists at a London conference: "Pharmaceutical companies are developing these drugs now.
"They will probably be available for testing from 2012."
The astonishing breakthrough follows intensive research into what makes cells die - and why some people dodge major illnesses such as cancer, diabetes and dementia to live beyond 100 still fit as a fiddle.
The New York professor's own team at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine has pinpointed genetic variants that let people live to a "ripe old age".
Those blessed with anti-aging genes tend not to get seriously ill towards the end of their lives - but die suddenly. Professor Barzilai, among experts at a Royal Society summit on aging, said: "I'm seeing 100-year-olds who are not only 100 years old but in great shape.
"People who die between 70 and 80 are sick in the last few years of their life. Centenarians are dying healthy."
He said people could begin taking a once-a-day longevity pill in their 40s or 50s.

Weekly Segment Host: Lon Strickler - Strickly Paranormal: For Those Seeking the Truth
Beginning in early April 1986 the people in and around the little known Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant began to experience a series of strange events revolving around sightings of a mysterious creature described as a large, dark, and headless man with gigantic wings and piercing red eyes. People affected by this phenomena experienced horrific nightmares, threatening phone calls and first hand encounters with the winged beast which became known as the Black Bird of Chernobyl.
Reports of these strange happening continued to increase until the morning of April 26, 1986, when at 1:23 am, reactor 4 of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant experienced a catastrophic steam explosion that resulted in a fire which caused a series of additional explosions followed by a nuclear meltdown. The power plant, located near Pripyat, Ukraine, Soviet Union, spewed a plume of radioactive fallout which drifted over parts of the Western Soviet Union, Eastern and Western Europe, Scandinavia, the UK, Ireland and eastern North America. Large areas of Ukraine, Belarus and Russia were badly contaminated, resulting in the evacuation and resettlement of over 336,000 people. The Chernobyl Disaster, as the incident was dubbed, is considered the worst accident ever in the history of nuclear power.
Following the meltdown, and subsequent explosions and fires, Soviet helicopters were dispatched to the scene, equipped with special fire fighting gear, these helicopters circled the plant dropping clay, sand, lead and other extinguishing chemicals on to the burning facility. Most of the fire was put out by 5 am with the fire burning with in reactor 4 continuing to blaze for several hours after. The firefighters who responded were unaware of the nature of the fire, assuming that it was simply an electrical fire, and received masses overdoses of radiation leading to many of their deaths, including Lieutenant Vladimir Pravik, who died on May 9, 1986.
The workers who survived the initial blast and fire, but would later die of radiation poisoning, claimed to have witnessed what has been described as a large black, bird like creature, with a 20 foot wingspan, gliding through the swirling plumes of irradiated smoke pouring from the reactor. No further sightings of the Black Bird of Chernobyl were reported after the Chernobyl Disaster, leaving researchers to speculate just what haunted the workers of the plant during the days leading up to the disaster.
The most commonly accepted theory suggests that the Black Bird of Chernobyl may have been the same creature spotted in Point Pleasant, West Virginia leading up to the collapse of the Silver Bridge on December 15, 1968. Investigators have suggested that the appearance of this creature is an omen of disasters to come in the area in which it shows itself. The physical description of both the Black Bird of Chernobyl and the Mothman, the creature sighted in West Virginia, are very similar, and the reports of nightmares and threatening phone calls leading up to these disasters are shared in both cases.
A second, less accepted theory, suggests that the Black Bird of Chernobyl was nothing more than the misidentification of the black stork, an endangered species endemic to southern Eurasia. The black stork stands nearly 3 feet tall and has a wing span of nearly 6 feet. This theory however fails to take into account the menacing phone calls and the the disturbing nightmares. Also the physical description given by the majority of eyewitnesses who actually saw the Black Bird of Chernobyl does not in anyway match the physical appearance of the Black Stork.
Both the Black Bird of Chernobyl and the Mothman have not been sighted since there respective disasters, leaving us with many unanswered questions. All we can do is wait for the beast to show itself again and give us a chance to figure out just what it may be, unfortunately it would appear that for this creature to show up again we will have to anticipate some form of disaster in the area it has selected to appear. _______________________ THE BLACK BIRD OF CHERNOBYL: Further Descriptions
Beginning in April of 1986, a rumor tore through the ranks of what was then a little know nuclear power plant located in the southern tier of the Ukraine - Chernobyl. In the days preceding the tragic meltdown, four Chernobyl employees had reported seeing what they claimed was a large, dark, headless man with gigantic wings and fire-red eyes.
Researchers now believe that the accounts surrounding this creature are similar to what investigators now recognize to be an archetypal Mothman event. Much like the Point Pleasant Mothman witnesses, these Chernobyl employees began to share unsettling and strangely similar experiences.
Some had been having horrifying nightmares, while others received threatening phone calls. According to accounts, some of these employees even mentioned their bizarre experiences to their superiors at the facility, but without evidence or any clear cut indication of what the problem may be, there was very little these officials could do - even had they been willing to take action.
On April 26, 1986, during a routine test of Reactor 4, the Chernobyl nuclear power plant was rocked by a massive explosion. Thirty people died that morning, followed by ten additional ten deaths due to radiation exposure. Over the next nine days the graphite of the reactor continued to burn, resulting in tremendous environmental damage and an untold number of radiation casualties over the next 17-years.
As the Soviet helicopters circled the smoldering plant, dropping over 500 pounds of clay, sand, lead, and other extinguishing chemicals on top of the flames, some of the surviving workers - who, at the sacrifice of their own lives, heroically struggled to prevent any further destruction - claimed to have witnessed what has been described as a "20-foot bird" gliding through the undulating tentacles of irradiated smoke, which continued to spew from the reactor.
* * * * * * * * * * Lindsay Selby: Still On the Track - Mothman was said to have been seen when disaster threatened. It is not the only winged creature to be seen before a disaster. The Black Bird of Chernobyl was said to herald the explosion at a nuclear plant in the Ukraine. On April 26, 1986, a massive explosion rocked the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Thirty people died immediately, followed by other deaths from radiation poisoning. For nine days the reactor continued to burn, resulting in tremendous environmental damage. The local population has suffered with the consequences ever since. The Chernobyl Disaster, as it was called, is considered the worst accident in the history of nuclear power.
In the days before the tragic occurrence several Chernobyl employees had reported seeing a large, dark/ black shape like a headless man with gigantic wings and red, fire-like, eyes. As with the appearances of Mothman, people who had seen the phenomena had been having nightmares and some received strange phone calls. Some of the employees reported the strange things to their supervisors at the plant. Whether any sort of action was taken is unknown. After the explosion helicopters were brought in to drop extinguishing agents on the flames. Some of the pilots and the surviving workers said they saw a giant black bird flying away from the smoking reactor. Described by many as “a large black, bird-like creature, with a 20-foot wingspan, gliding through the swirling plumes of smoke." The bird has not been seen again.
The theory out forward was that the bird was a rare black stork. However, the stork has a clear visible head and its wingspan is only about 6 feet (1.9 metres), and it stands about 3 feet (1 metre) tall. It also would not explain the strange dreams and phone calls. So was this winged creature a portent of the disaster? There are other tales such as (but not the only story) Mothman about winged creatures being seen before disaster. We can only wait and see if more tales surface, though I rather hope they don’t if it portends something bad happening. Sources: americanmonsters.com www.unknownexplorers.com www.cryptozoology.com www.parascientifica.com NOTE: I and two others had an experience with a 'Mothman' like creature several years ago during an investigation in Adams County, PA. It's been a fascination with me since then...Lon
Henry W. McElroy, Jr, retiring State Representative to New Hampshire, declared this week that former U.S. President Eisenhower was briefed about the presence of extraterrestrial intelligent beings on Earth. McElroy also said that the document he viewed while at the State Legislature made reference to the opportunity for Eisenhower to meet the alien visitors.
Transcript - Hon. Henry McElroy, Jr.:
Hello, I’m speaking with you from Fort Monroe, Virginia. We’re also known as The Gateway to Freedom.
We sit right next to a little town called Phoebus, Virginia. Interestingly, they call themselves The Gateway to the New World.
Phoebus sits inside of Hampton, Virginia whose motto is First from the Sea, First to the Stars.
My name is Henry McElroy, Jr. a retiring, former State Representative from New Hampshire. Thank you for your attention to this brief message concerning the world’s interaction with both earth-based, and off-world astronauts.
The reason I am making this announcement is in the hopes of encouraging better perspective to all who explore the universe. Therefore, as a result, making a more valuable contribution to humanity, for the benefit of all faiths, all races and all nations.
Another reason I am here today is because I believe in the *foundational wisdom of our nation, which was laid down by our founding fathers and because we know that highly advanced knowledge and information can assist human beings in solving various problems both in current times, and in our future.
When I was in the New Hampshire State Legislature, I served on the State Federal Relations and Veterans Affairs committee. It was, apparently, important that as a Representative of the Sovereign People who had elected me to this Honorable Office, that I be updated on a large number of topics related to the affairs of our People, and our Nation. As I understood it, some of those ongoing topics had been examined and categorized as Federal, State, Local development, and security matters. These documents related to various topics some of which spanned decades of our nation’s history. One of those recurring topics is the reason I am addressing you this evening.
I would like to submit to our nation my personal testimony of one document related to one of these ongoing topics which I saw while in office, serving on the State Federal Relations and Veterans Affairs Committee.
The document I saw was an official brief to President Eisenhower. To the best of my memory this brief was pervaded with a sense of hope, and it informed President Eisenhower of the continued presence of extraterrestrial beings here in the United States of America.
The brief seemed to indicate that a meeting between the President and some of these visitors could be arranged as appropriate if desired.
The tone of the brief indicated to me that there was no need for concern, since these visitors were in no way, causing any harm, or had any intentions, whatsoever, of causing any disruption then, or in the future.
While I can’t verify the times or places or that any meeting or meetings occurred directly between Eisenhower and these visitors – - because of his optimism in his farewell address in 1961, I personally believe that Eisenhower did, indeed, meet with these extraterrestrial, off world astronauts.
I hope my personal testimony will aid the nation in its quest for continued enlightenment. I am honored to follow in the footsteps of those who have come forward with their personal testimonies – those who deserve the admiration of the American people for sharing their accounts publicly, in an effort to elevate our knowledge to a higher understanding of our existence.
People such as:
Captain Bill Uhouse of the United States Marine Corps
Lt. Col John Williams of the United States Air Force
Co Phillip Corso Sr. of the United States Army
Commander Graham Bethune of the United States Navy
David Hamilton of the Department of Energy
Donna Hare of NASA
James Kopf of the National Security Agency
I would also like to thank the countries of:
And, our neighbor to the North, Canada
….for also opening their files to the citizens of their countries, and allowing them access to information that is so very important to the evolution of humanity.
I thank you for allowing me this opportunity to have a small part in doing the same, by sharing the information I have given you today.
Thank you very much and I’d like to thank our communications crew for helping us make this happen today.
And, I’d also like to authorize distribution of this video for anyone who wants to use it for educational purposes.
Thank you. ______________________
Did President Eisenhower Meet with Aliens in 1954?
NOTE: For decades, Edwards AFB has been considered the location of this meeting...but through statements I have collected over the years as well as other anecdotal evidence available online, I have come to the conclusion that Holloman AFB (the former Alamogordo Army Air Field) was the actual location of the encounter. In 1954, Holloman AFB was the venue for all flight research and development projects in the military...Lon
One of the first conclusions an impartial observer must make about the subject of UFOs is that rumors and circumstance play far too great a role in what ought to be a more exacting quest for knowledge. It is just such an observation which once led Dr. Carl Sagan to comment dryly that UFOs "are more a matter for religion and superstition than they are for science."
While this dismissal is perhaps unscientific in its own right, the point is well taken. Attend any gathering of "UFO people" you want, and simply listen. Rumors abound. Perhaps worse, however, is that some of these rumors manage to circulate for years (even decades) without anyone making a reasonable effort to get to the bottom of them.
One of the most persistent of these is a story that President Eisenhower visited Edwards Air Force Base in early 1954, and either viewed the bodies of dead aliens and the wreckage of their craft, or met with live aliens on some sort of diplomatic mission to earth.
The story takes many forms, with the common thread being that Ike mysteriously disappeared one evening while on a vacation to Palm Springs, and that he was spirited to Edwards to view (or meet) aliens. It is said that he returned by dawn and shortly thereafter ordered absolute secrecy about anything having to do with UFOs.
No doubt one of the reasons that this particular rumor has continued to circulate for such a long time is that there are a number of verifiable facts associated with it--some of them rather curious.
For example, President Eisenhower did indeed make a trip to Palm Springs between February 17th and 24th, 1954, and on the evening of Saturday, February 20th, he did disappear! When members of the press learned that the president was not where he should be, rumors ran rampant that he had either died or was seriously ill.
The story even managed to get onto a press wire before being killed moments later. To quell the fuss, White House Press Secretary James Haggerty called an urgent late evening press conference to announce "solemnly" that the president had been enjoying fried chicken earlier that evening, had knocked a cap off a tooth, and had been taken to a local dentist for treatment.
When Ike turned up as scheduled the next morning for an early church service, the matter seemed ended. Although the Palm Springs trip was billed as a "vacation for the president", the trip appears to have come up rather suddenly.
In addition, it is a matter of record that Ike had returned from a quail shooting vacation in Georgia less than a week before leaving for Palm Springs.
While the incidence of a local dentist being called upon to treat a president of the United States is unusual enough that it should constitute a rather memorable event for those involved, the dentist's widow, in a June, 1979 interview, was curiously unable to recall any specifics relating to her husband's alleged involvement in the affair--not even the time of day it had occurred. Yet her memory appeared flawless when asked to relate details of her and her husband's attendance (by presidential invitation) at a steak fry the following evening, where her husband was introduced as "the dentist who had treated the president".
This would appear to suggest a cover story, the details of which would have easily been repeated at the time, but quite naturally forgotten 25 years later. Research at the Eisenhower Library has uncovered two other facts inconsistent with the dentist story.
The first is that while the library maintains an extensive index of records relating to the president's health, there is no record of any dental work having been performed at all during February, 1954. A file on "Dentists" contains nothing concerning any such incident either. Secondly, there is a large file containing copies of all sorts of acknowledgments which were sent by the White House to people who had something to do with the Palm Springs trip.
There are letters, for example, to people who sent flowers, people who met the airplane, people who had offered to play golf, etc. There is even a thank you letter to the minister who presided over the Sunday service Ike attended. Yet there is no record of any acknowledgment having been sent to "the dentist who treated the president."
If the matter were as routine as Haggerty attempts to make it appear, then the absence of these records seems strangely inconsistent. The rumor of the president's alleged visit to Edwards is not a new one. UFO contactee fringe writers began making unsupported claims about it less than two months after Ike's trip.
So did a bizarre fellow from the Hollywood hills named Gerald Light, who, in an April 16, 1954 letter to the head of a Southern California metaphysical organization, actually claimed to have been at Edwards where he saw Ike, the saucers and the aliens. Light's letter has been controversial for years and copies of it have turned up in all sorts of places, including the National Enquirer.
Investigation into Mr. Light's background, however, turned up the fact that he was an elderly mystic who believed that psychic "out-of-body-experiences" were a logical extension of the reality of life and should be treated as such. In the final analysis, Light's alleged visit to Edwards was just such an experience.
And so the story ends. Clearly something unusual occurred involving the president on the evening of February 20, 1954. Whether it was a trip to the dentist, a trip to see flying saucers, or something altogether different and unrelated, no one can say. It's the stuff rumors are made of.

President Eisenhower's Close Encounter at Holloman AFB
by Clark C. McClelland, Former ScO, U.S. Space Shuttle Fleet KSC, Florida 1958 to 1992
agoracomsopolitam - "Shortly after the US Air Force became a separate branch of the service, Alamogordo Air Base became Holloman AFB in honour of Colonel George V. Holloman, a pioneer in Air Force research and development." The old Alamogordo airfield had been a training base for heavy bombers. Then, U.S. President Dwight Eisenhower was landing at Holloman. It was a smooth landing as landings go. The big Lockheed Constellation in passenger service in those days carried over 125 passengers, but there were fewer than twenty aides and secret service men in the main cabin with the crew of fourteen each at his station. At about 7,000 feet into the landing, Major Bill Draper, the pilot, started reversing the engines, and the plane slowed measurably and taxied to the end of the runway.
Air Force One taxied back up the runway about 75 yards and stopped. All engines were shut down. There were probably 300 people with a vantage point, who saw Air Force One land, and as it did, they called others to other windows, work stations and vantage points. It must have seemed very eerie for the president's plane to be seen sitting out there almost a half mile away, alone and quiet.
No red carpet, no band, no honour parade, just a few horned meadowlarks calling in the distance. Eventually, the base workers returned to their stations. And always the question was asked: Is Ike here? What's going on? The civilians and military on the base had been told that while the president was here, this would be a "business as usual" day. A few minutes earlier, Col. Sharp, the base commander, and several officers had gone to the base operations tower to see the president's plane land.
The first communication they heard about 8:10 was "HOLLOMAN TOWER, THIS IS AIR FORCE 7885 TEN MILES EAST OF MARYHILL."
They requested landing instructions, other traffic in the area, and base wind direction. The runway they were assigned was the farthest away from the hangars and workshops. It was obvious to base personnel that what was happening or going to happen was as far away as it could be. Little could be seen unless one had a vantage point and binoculars. Phones all over the base were very busy, many questions were asked, is he still out on the runway?
But about ten minutes after the plane landed the radar officers gave instructions to shut off all radar. He had turned base operations over to his deputy base commander as long as the President was here. He felt it his duty to be with him with no distractions.
There were a dozen visual patrols out around the base and some of the up-range small radars were on. A phone rang in the tower with a report of two unidentified objects passing over Range Road 12. Then a minute later the bogies were over Range Road 7 only a few minutes from the runways. Men in the tower swung their glasses to the north in the morning haze. Then something glinted in the sun, then something else just below it.
A report came in of a third bogie five minutes behind the first two. The tower personnel who did not know what these were, were stunned. No tail, no wings, no motors. Just round objects approaching the president's plane sitting alone on the far runway with a covey of base officers in the tower, including Col. Sharp. They knew something big was up. They reported the objects, logged them and did their job which was "business as usual." The two objects stopped about 300 feet over Air Force One, and one descended on the far side of the plane and gently touched about 200 feet ahead of the plane.
The other hovered briefly and then came across the near runway towards the big hangars and some shop buildings. It took up a position somewhere above the buildings over the tarmac. The disc had a good vantage point of anything that might come towards the president's plane and the disc on the ground. It was with some disbelief that two UFOs had come to Holloman AFB in February of 1955. There was little background for believing in them at all as extraterrestrial. Some who saw or heard about the two craft at the base that day thought they might be new Russian or German innovations.
Soon after the UFO landed in front of Air Force One, a man many assumed to be the President, came to the doorway of the plane, descended the portable stairs and approached the saucer on the ground. Some sort of a hatch had been opened a few minutes before and had folded down to become a small ramp. The man walked up the ramp, stood briefly at the opening, shook hands with someone, and went inside.
Observers thought the period of time to be about 45 minutes. When he emerged from the craft, he walked towards Air Force One. Part of this time he was facing the observers, and most were sure it was Ike. He wore no hat, and many recognized the hairline and his erect military walk. NOTE: This incident has been a personal quest for many years. I have conversed with a few individuals who had some knowledge of the incident...as well as the circumstances behind the crash at Roswell, NM. One day, I may get the nerve to write out my conclusions unless, of course, full disclosure beats me to it. Don't hold your breath...Lon
timesonline - The earth opened up and swallowed a family of four in their home in Canada as they watched ice hockey on TV.
The bodies of Richard and Lynn Prefontaine and their daughters, Amelie, 11, and Anais, 9, were found in the basement of their two-story house in Saint-Jude, Quebec. Only the green roof of the property was visible after the disaster. The family’s golden retriever, Foxy, was found safe outside tethered to a tree in the mud.
“After digging and going through the rubble we found the four victims,” said Michael Dore, Quebec’s emergency management coordinator. “They were very close to one another, some of them lying on the couch in the family room in the basement.”
The giant sinkhole was caused by a landslide on Monday in the farming town of 1,000, about 50 miles northeast of Montreal. It ate up three cars, a stretch of concrete road and most of the Prefontaines’ house on a cliff over a tributary of the Yamaska River. The landslide, which pulled down the cliff, created a crater about 600ft long by 400ft wide and 40ft deep. it happened at 7.30pm time as the Prefontaines cheered the Montréal Canadiens in their Stanley Cup play-off against the Pittsburgh Penguins. The family had no warning and no time to escape.
Herman Gagnon, a neighbour, told reporters that he heard a loud groan that appeared to come from his basement and went to check his pipes before realizing that there had been a landslide.
It took rescue workers a day to dig down to the Prefontaines’ TV room to recover their bodies from the basement, which was buried in sludge.
The sinkhole also engulfed a pick-up truck with its driver trapped inside. André Cartier suffered concussion and it took him more than an hour to climb out of the hole and seek help at a nearby farmhouse.
The Mayor of Saint-Jude, Yves de Bellefeuille, said that the deaths were a “big blow” to the tight-knit town. He said that he was proud of the rescue effort. Neighbours offered food and hot drinks to rescue teams as officials brought in a psychologist to help locals to cope with the shock.
Worst affected were classmates of the two dead girls. Mr Prefontaine was described as an electrician who liked photographing wildlife as a hobby.
Experts said the landslide was the result of recent rain changing the composition of the clay that makes up the area. Quebec is notoriously prone to landslides. The Canadian Government said that clay earthflows had caused about 100 deaths in recorded memory, including the destruction of two Quebec towns in 1908 and 1971.
By a coincidence, the destruction of St-Jean-Vianney on May 4, 1971, also took place on the night of a Montréal Canadiens game during another unexpected Stanley Cup run.
dailytelegraph - It left Earth 33 years ago, now it's claimed the Voyager 2 spacecraft may have been hijacked by aliens after sending back data messages NASA scientists can't decode.
NASA installed a 12-inch disk containing music and greetings in 55 languages in case intelligent extraterrestrial life ever found it.
But now the spacecraft is sending back what sounds like an answer: Signals in an unknown data format!
The best scientific minds have so far not been able to decipher the strange information – is it a secret message?
Alien expert Hartwig Hausdorf said: "It seems almost as if someone had reprogrammed or hijacked the probe – thus perhaps we do not yet know the whole truth".
Engineers are working to solve the data transmissions from the Voyager 2 spacecraft near the edge of the solar system, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory said today.
The spacecraft late last month began sending science data 8.6 billion miles to Earth in a changed format that mission managers could not decode.
Engineers have since instructed Voyager 2 to only transmit data on its own health and status while they work on the problem.
Launched in 1977, Voyager 2 and its twin, Voyager 1, explored the giant planets Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune and kept on going. Nearly 33 years later, they are the most distant human-made objects.
Voyager 1 is 10.5 billion miles from Earth and in about five years is expected to pass through the heliosphere, a bubble the sun creates around the solar system, and enter interstellar space.
Voyager 2 will follow after that.
NOTE: If you've seen 'Star Trek: The Motion Picture' then you'll understand the images. Basically, V'ger is a sentient being that evolved from Voyager 6, a fictitious space probe from the 20th Century that vanished into a black hole. The story of V'ger and its return to Earth to seek "the creator" forms the plot for the first Star Trek feature film...Lon

The signed photograph, believed to depict the ghost of a young girl, is expected to fetch a substantial figure when it goes under the hammer at Fraser’s Autographs next month.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s ghostly photograph, believed to have been ‘taken with one exposure only’, is purported to be the ghost of a young girl sitting on the lap of a young man.
The 2.5 by 4.5 inch ‘spirit’ photograph is signed clearly, in full across the bottom margin.
The photograph is being auctioned by London-based Fraser’s Autographs, part of the renowned philatelic group Stanley Gibbons, on 17th June 2010 in their postal auction, PA76.
Auctioneer Olivia Odell commented that ‘though the jury is still out on whether the photograph shows a genuine ghost, it remains, none-the-less, quite chilling to look at’.
“It is certainly a completely unique piece signed by the great man himself”.
Conan Doyle’s most famous character, Sherlock Holmes, was strictly a man of scientific reasoning and logic, though following the death of his wife in 1906 Conan Doyle became fascinated by spiritualism. Convinced of the existence of fairies and spirits he became a member of The Ghost Club, founded in Cambridge in 1862.
The paranormal photograph is expected to reach at least £1,200 in the postal auction at 399 Strand, London, on Thursday 17th June.
For further information please contact Olivia Odell: email@example.com / 0207 5574405
PA76 closes at 10pm GMT on Thursday 17th June 2010. The Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Spirit photograph is lot number 151 of 1147 lots. www.frasersautographs.com NOTE: Since I'm an autograph collector and dealer, this is a fairly important piece though, the alternative investigator in me says it's a double exposure. I suspect £1,200 is a very conservative estimate. I may need to get into the bidding on this one...Lon
chron - Neil Armstrong took his biggest step for all mankind, and as if to underscore the point his employer decided to share a small token of his lunar booty with nations of the planet. It was not much, at least by size, but the offering of small chunks of lunar rock to the head of every government was a symbolic gesture intended to promote goodwill.
More than 130 nations received inscribed plaques adorned with small replicas of their official flags — which had made the trip to the moon and back — along with a thumb-sized bit of black igneous rock beneath a Lucite shield. In mineralogical terms, the pebbles had no real value. But there was no beating them for rarity.
Years later, the fate of those Apollo 11 moon rocks, as well as a second goodwill offering in 1973 that followed the Apollo 17 mission, is in many cases an embarrassing mystery. Some likely are in archives and cannot easily be located. But others have disappeared with deposed dictators, aging government officials or crooked former bureaucrats. Every once in a while, one shows up in the shadowy recesses of illicit private commerce accompanied by a multimillion-dollar price tag and a no-questions proviso.
Joe Gutheinz, a retired investigator with NASA's Office of Inspector General, has spent a fair portion of his adult life chasing missing moon rocks, determined to restore them to their rightful owners. The 54-year-old Gutheinz, who teaches an online class in investigative techniques for the University of Phoenix, has repeatedly used the missing rocks as an assignment for his students. They have been able to determine that 90 or so nations cannot account for the precious pebbles.
“The moon rocks are disappearing,” Gutheinz said. “Most of the ones that are now truly gone will probably be gone forever.”
It's been a fascinating pursuit, and mostly fruitless. But every so often he managed a hit. In 1998, for instance, he set up a successful sting operation to recover the moon rock from Honduras.
“We formed a company called John's Estate Sales and took out a quarter-page ad in USA Today saying ‘Moon Rocks Wanted,' ” Gutheinz recalled.
A response led to a website where pictures of the plaque and rock were posted. After two months of prompting, the owner went to Miami.
“He thought we might be undercover agents from the beginning,” Gutheinz said, “but the lure of $5 million was too much.”
More recently, Gutheinz played a role in flushing out the owner of the goodwill moon rock that was intended to go to the government of Cyprus in 1973. The official presentation never happened because of the sectarian strife that wracked the island nation at the time. Rather than return the rock to NASA or the U.S. State Department for safekeeping until order was restored, an American diplomat kept it for years, then gave it to one of his children, Gutheinz said.
The world's leading authority on space-related artifacts, Robert Pearlman, reported to NASA in 2003 that the Cyprus rock had been offered for sale.
Pearlman believes that the diplomat who originally had it probably had no ill intent in keeping it. Embassy personnel had been evacuated from the island, and he may have simply been at a loss at whom to give it to, he said. Apparently, later governments of the divided nation were not aware that such a gift had been offered.
Last September, Gutheinz made a formal request for a Congressional inquiry into the missing rock and why it had not been turned over to the government of Cyprus. He said he had two reasons for the request.
“First, to get our government to commit to recovering the moon rock, and by publicizing the inquiry place pressure on the person who had the moon rock to do the right thing and turn it over to either Cyprus or the U.S.,” he said. “Chess is one of my favorite games, and I simply positioned my chess pieces. He started to realize he needed to give it back.”
The rock's owner, who has not been named publicly, recently told NASA that he is willing to return the goodwill plaque. Now, Gutheinz is on the trail of two other rocks, one stolen from a museum in Malta in 2004 and one that had been in the possession of the late Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu.
With the help of Gutheinz, Pearlman, who operates the website www.collectspace.com, put together a list of nations and the status of their moon rocks. In an e-mail, he said that a fair number of the rocks currently unaccounted for will, in time, be located in archives or storage. Unlike Gutheinz, Pearlman is optimistic of the eventual return of many of those that were purloined.
“Unlike in the art world, for example, where there are reports of collectors content with possessing the art for their eyes only or as investment pieces, those who tend to desire space artifacts, and specifically moon rocks, are often keen to show off their prized pieces,” Pearlman said.
Although Gutheinz no longer has an official role to play in chasing down the lunar rocks, he has no plan to stop.
“We gave them away, and they weren't taken care of like they should have been,” he said. “They belong to the people.”
NOTE: After digging into this story a bit, I discovered that 90 of the 130 presentation pieces of lunar rock given to foreign governments are missing and most likely stolen by the person who was in charge of the country at the time. Here is a link to a list of the nations who received the lunar rocks: Goodwill Moon Rocks?...Lon
