Mailbag: Alien Abduction / Mutilation - Sacramento Valley, CA

In July, 1976 a friend and I, who is now a dentist and a no nonsense kind of guy, were cruising between Lincoln and Auburn, CA on a quiet country road. We drove over the top of a hilly road and we were descending I noticed a bright bluish-white light shining down on the road about 200 yards in front of us. It was coming from a point over a large group of scrub oak trees. The trees came to a point over the road creating a canapé effect over the road. What was strange is there were no street lights and none of the light shining down on the road was being blocked out by the trees.

As we approached the light my car began to sputter and lost power, then the headlights went out. As we were approaching the light I was flashing my bright lights on and off before the car shut down. As soon as the car rolled to a stop, I opened the door to step out... the light disappeared while leaves were floating down below where the light had been falling onto the road in front of us. During July in the Sacramento valley it is still about 80 degrees with no wind. It gets very hot here in the summer.

The thing that really shocked me was 4 days later we took 2 of our cats to the vets, which was about 3 miles out of town. When the vet drove up he was acting confused and was stuttering, which he did when he got excited. He had been called out to a ranch to look at a dead cow. He explained to me and my mom that the cow had been cut up in a very strange way with a missing eye ball, utter and entrails. It's hind quarters had been drilled or board out. He also said therewere no flies, no bugs and no predator bite marks anywhere on the cow. The cow was located 50 yards from the very spot we saw the lights over the trees. My doctor friend said his mother was upset with him for getting home so late the night we saw the lights. However we were only out there in the country for an hour and a half. He claims it was 4am when we got home.

After dropping him off that night, I was really tired and just went home to bed and didn't pay any attention to the time. He claims we lost 3 hours. To this day I have no idea what we saw or what happened. He refuses to talk about it with me or to anyone else. I have seen other lights and strange things over the years but this situation has always made me scratch my head and I wonder what really happened that night to us and that poor cow. Nothing was ever said to the police or to the news media regarding the mutilated cow or the lights we saw.

After years of hearing about abductions and cow mutilations, I believe we may have been part of something that cannot be explained with science or rational thought. My interest in UFO's has been very strong for years and I am sure there are other things going on around us that we cannot explain or can we make sense of them because we are not allowed to by those conducting such intrusive examinations of humans and animals.

Well that's my story and I'm sticking to it because I can remember it like it happened yesterday. We were not drinking, smoking or doing any drugs as my doctor friend was always against such activities due to his medical training and personal beliefs. On the other hand, I know something happened beyond the norm and will take it to my grave as a real and unexplained experience.

Former Area 51 Workers Discuss Spy Aircraft - Mystique about alien spaceships and little green men at Area 51 took a back seat Thursday to the real men who worked there for the CIA and the spy planes they flew during the Cold War.

In fact, a question about a link between the secret installation 90 miles north of Las Vegas and speculation about flying saucer debris and dead aliens from a 1947 crash site near Roswell, N.M., was glossed over as fiction during a panel discussion at the Atomic Testing Museum.

The discussion capped a two-day event at the museum titled "The Spy Planes of Groom Lake."

The panel of former Area 51 workers included test pilots, engineers and a mission planner who were recruited by the Central Intelligence Agency in the 1960s for development of the A-12 and later the SR-71 Blackbird.

"The job is to get good photography of the targets you're running against," said 81-year-old Ray Haupt, a retired Air Force brigadier general who flew both planes and their predecessor, the U-2.

Haupt recalled one experience after an SR-71 engine flamed out.

"Suddenly your helmet was bouncing between the two sides of the canopy like a basketball. That got your attention," he said. "It was a rough ride."

CIA pilot Jack Layton said flying at three times the speed of sound, however, could be "very smooth unless the air itself is bumpy."

Haupt, of Tucson, Ariz., said he preferred the SR-71 because it "could get the job done" like the A-12 but had a better navigation system to keep the plane on course.

While the SR-71 was an Air Force plane, the A-12 belonged to the CIA. The aircraft was a high-flying jet made of a titanium alloy to resist high temperatures while flying at supersonic speeds as it photographed targets and evaded enemy missiles.

After the plane was successfully tested at Groom Lake, it was used during the Vietnam War in the mid- to late-1960s to find surface-to-air missile sites.

"We flew 2,850 missions out of Groom Lake that the world did not know about," said electrical engineer T.D. Barnes of Henderson, president of Roadrunners Internationale, a group of former "black project" workers that co-sponsored the event.

Barnes recounted the learning curve that designers of the A-12 experienced, particularly with making planes out of titanium alloy metal instead of aluminum. Tools that could penetrate the hard metal had to be developed to build the aircraft.

"We soon realized the United States did not have good enough quality of (titanium), so this plane we were building for the sole purpose of flying over the Soviet Union, we went to Russia and bought our titanium. They had no idea what we were using it for, but the metal ... did come from our adversary," he said.

Mission planner Sam Pizzo recalled starting from scratch when building the A-12.

"We had to rethink all the things we had to do," he said. "Remember, this plane came to Groom Lake in boxes. It had never been flown."

It wasn't until 2007, when the CIA lifted a veil of secrecy about the A-12, that those who were involved with the project were allowed to talk about certain aspects of it.

Barnes said that he has mixed emotions about that decision.

"We still don't talk much about it," he said. "We can talk about the projects we were on but not the location."

CONTACT? - Huntington Beach, CA - 10/10/09

NOTE: this was reported on the MUFON report page this morning...don't have a clue what to make of it. I contacted KOCE and they acted as if I was crazy. I realize this sounds somewhat familiar, thus the title 'CONTACT', but there may be more to this since I read of a similar encounter several years ago. We'll 'humor' the witness on this until other information comes out...Lon

MUFON witness statement: I was watching TV on Monday, October 5, 2009 and turned on KOCE, a local station in Huntington Beach, CA and saw a picture of Hitler with his arm up, giving a speech. I thought it was frozen, so I changed the channel, and turned it back, and it was STILL THERE, with a clicking sound. The thing is, there were still news headlines moving at the bottom of the screen. The picture was there for 28 minutes, and I took a picture of it. I just finished a book that described people in England in 1953 watching the BBC channel and they picked up a KLEE station from Texas...that had gone OFF THE AIR , THREE YEARS BEFORE??? So at 9:00 P.M. I went out for a smoke, and saw a Distinct light cruising like a plane, AND THEN....jittered left, right, up, down, left, right FAST. Then DISAPPEARED?? I contacted the TV sation, and am still waiting for a response. It was pretty trippy though. Does anyone know if that (Hitler) image was one of the first images we broadcast into space when technology permitted? Maybe it was a communication attempt?? Another object I saw in the sky (on another night) was RED, and blinked slowly only to a radio tower with a red blinking light on top. Was it possibly trying to send some sort of message to the red tower light??

Flying Cryptid Reported in County Durham, UK

This was reported at CFZ:

We saw a Thing the other night. Not sure at all WHAT it was, but both myself and Gareth saw it. We were driving back from Darlington to home at about 10pm on Wednesday 7th October, and just west of Harperley roundabout on the A698 to Wolsingham, when “it” flew in front of the car.

Whatever it was, was not a bird, and was not a moth or bat. It was approx. 3 feet long, about 1ft wide at the head, tapering down to a short tail. It was white and almost see-through – like a cloud, perhaps – pear-drop shaped, and moved very fast.

It rose from a hedge (or from the ground close to the hedge), which borders the road. Then it sped across the road at about 30ft high. Not sure how fast it was going, but a few mins later we saw a tawny owl flying across the road, and the Thing was much faster than the owl.

Before anyone gets the wrong idea, I am not suggesting that the Thing and the owl were connected in any way. It was incidental and only serves as an indication of air-speed.

The site we saw it at was close to the POW camp, which has recently been put up for sale on ebay. There are no street lights nearby, and it is a remote area of the high north Pennines. Very few dwellings, not much human activity, other than the fairly quiet A689. There was very little wind, and it was quite dark as it was cloudy/overcast. No rain.

Video: UFO Cow Abduction - Puerto Gaboto, Argentina

Statement with video: October 8, 2009 - A couple traveling along the river in the area north of Rosario claimed having seen an animal being abducted by a flying saucer. "Later, they both vanished," they said.

The likelihood that cows could fly was always relegated to the province of the impossible. But to Sergio and Laura, this changed last Monday afternoon, when they traveled along the coast near Puerto Gaboto, and believed that they saw a cow in the sky, abducted by a UFO.

The couple told the story to journalist Guillermo Brasca in a report transmitted by the Telenoche program on Channel 3. They provided photos which are not entirely clear, but which show the alleged UFO and what would appear to be a cow in flight.

"We went to have some with the kids, we were looking at the island and we were surprised to see some strange white thing flying. It was large. We made a close up with the camera and it was a cow flying, and above it, there was something like a flying saucer suspended in the air (some of the photos accompany the report). It wasn't a helicopter or an airplane," said Laura. The woman added: "It seemed as if the cow was being sucked up by the flying saucer. Then they both vanished. I want to believe that's what it was. To me, it was a UFO. I experienced it."

NOTE: I'm skeptical on this one, though, it seems the witness was serious. This story was reported by Grupo G.A.B.I.E. and as well...Lon

Paranormal Events Plague Cleveland, OH Home

Click for video - A production team from Animal Planet is in the home of Tom and Deborah Weaver to chronicle the ongoing paranormal incidents that started three years ago. The Weavers and their dogs, Trouble and Georgia, have been visited by spirits on an almost daily basis.

"We really didn't want to tell anybody about this for a long time," said Deborah Weaver.

Sitting in her living room and holding the hand of her husband, Tom, Weaver admitted that living with paranormal spirits is not easy.

"It seemed to start with one spirit, and then progressed to the point where we identified seven of them," added Deborah. "Our dogs were the first to notice that something strange was going on in our living room."

"I was really skeptical," said Tom Weaver, "and I really didn't want to believe in any of this. But after enough stuff happened to me, I had to admit that something very special is going on here."

Chris Page runs the "Orbs" paranormal detection agency. His team has been doing tests for weeks at the Weaver home and says he has personally witnessed unusual events.

"There is no doubt that something extraordinary is going on in this home," said Page. "This goes way beyond just the data showing up on our meters. I have no doubt there is paranormal activity going on here."

"It started with our dog, Trouble, barking and chasing something we couldn't see in the living room," said Deborah. "We actually took her to the vet because she was acting so strangely. She would start to stare into space and start pawing at something that we couldn't see."

A few weeks later, the couple began hearing and seeing unexplainable things in the living room and in the hallway.

They confided in just a few family members and asked them to come over to see for themselves.

Deborah's sister, Laura Templin, said she didn't believe in visiting spirits until she felt something touch her neck and shoulder.

"Oh my goodness, I jumped up and ran out of the house," said Templin.

"I know people are going to say we are kooks or attention seekers," said Tom Weaver.

"But let me tell you, we actually tried to keep this a secret just to avoid any attention. However, it was getting so intense and so frequent that we had to call in a team to help verify what we were experiencing."

The Animal Planet series called "The Haunted" premieres at 10 p.m. Sunday Nov. 22. No broadcast date has been selected yet for the report on the Weaver home.

Tom Weaver held his wife's hand and said, "I just wanted to let the whole world know this actually happens to normal people."

Cellar Owned by Vlad Dracula Discovered in Hungary - Archaeologists believe to have discovered a cellar owned by the Wallachian Duke Vlad III, commonly known by the name of “Dracula.” The cellar was discovered in the university town of Pecs in southern Hungary.

According to reports, Tomas Fedeles, tutor of medieval and early modern history at the University of Pecs pointed out that his research showed that Vlad III or Vlad Dracula lived in a two-story house located today in the city’s central square.

Fedeles found a document containing a detailed description of the house and its owners, among which the name “Drakulya” appears. The researcher believes that the cellar most likely belonged to “Dracula.”

A local archaeologist, Oliver Gabor, said that the cellar was one of the most impressive medieval cellars found to date and considers that further excavation could reveal important information.

Cellar to be filled

The recently discovered cellar believed by researchers to have belonged to Vlad III Tepes will be closed. Authorities plan to fill in the site.

The decision comes after Zoltan Karpati, the official archaeologist of the Cultural Heritage Protection Service said that “the excavations did not find items that might point to an individual owner”, ANI writes.

Karpati disagrees with the position of the house indicated by the medieval document researched by Tomas Fedeles, saying, however, that it is possible that the cellar could have belonged to the “Dracula House.”

If the decision of the Cultural Heritage Protection Service is final, there will be no further scientific research on the matter and the cellar will be filled.

Vlad the Impaler

Vlad III “Tepes”(the impaler in Romanian) was born in 1431 in Transylvania as the second son of Vlad Dracul, a member of the Order of the Dragon, a secret society founded by Sigismund and queen Barbara of Celje in a order to unite wealthy individuals and high ranking society members in the fight against the Ottoman Empire. At a fragile age, Vlad was also introduced to the Order.

He spent most of his life in exile in Moldova and Hungary. However, in 1456 he became Voivod (Duke) of Wallachia, now the southern part of Romania, and remained loyal to the Order initiating a tireless campaign against the Ottomans. In 1461, Vlad campaigned south of the Danube and unleashed havoc in the region between Serbia and the Black Sea. Vlad later said: “I have killed men and women, old and young… 23,884 Turks and Bulgarians without counting those whom we burned alive in their homes or whose heads were not chopped off by our soldiers.”

During his reign he acquired the reputation of a cruel and bloodthirsty ruler. His favorite method of execution was by impalement. Vlad tried to eliminate all those who opposed him.

Vlad III Tepes became popular after Irish writer Bram Stoker published his novel Dracula. Inspired by European folklore and vampire stories, Stoker creates a fictional character based on the reputation of Vlad. The Impaler was portrayed as the vampire Prince of Transylvania.

In reality, Vlad Tepes was only born in Sighisoara, Transylvania, and became the ruler of Wallachia, south of the Carpathians. The time Vlad spent in his adult life in Transylvania was brief and documented by the raids against the Danesti clan who posed a constant threat to his rule.

Vlad spent more than 10 years in captivity in Hungary, imprisoned by Matthias Corvinus. The Wallachian Voivod was assassinated in late 1476 and believed to have been buried at the Snagov Abbey. However, recent examinations of Vlad’s tomb have discovered only a few horse bones dating from the neolithic age

Unknown Creature Reported in Madeira Beach, Florida

The following letter was published in the Tampa Bay Weekly:

At the risk of having everyone think I have lost it, gone bonkers or whatever, I must share this visual sighting with everyone since it has happened two times now.

The last time was a week ago and it came out of the water further than previously and I could estimate the girth that came out of the water at 12 to 15 inches in diameter.

It continued its roll seemingly for a long time and it had to be 12 to 15 feet in length judging by the roll time. It was brown on top with mottled brown and yellow lower side. It finally flipped its tail before disappearing and it was a flat, lamprey like vertical caudal fin an estimated 9 to 10 inches maximum flare tapering to a point. I never saw the head and there was no dorsal fin nor pectoral fins visible.

I have seen many porpoise almost daily here that swim up and down the canal usually in pairs and this was NOT a porpoise, no way!

After the first sighting I thought it might be a huge snake (python like in the Glades) that someone turned loose, escaped or whatever because it did not roll as high out of the water so the size (girth) was not real evident although it was the same color on back and sides from what I could see. It did not flip its tail that time so the weird shaped caudal fin was not visible.

I am sure glad that I told Bet about the sightings so the little guys in the white jackets don’t come for me. She believes me though it sounds a bit far out! LOL!

I see people in their wee kayaks paddling up and down the canal and think about how they could be a snack for the Normandy Nessie! LOL!

I am dead serious and this is not a spoof, joke or ruse. From the size of this thing it could pose a real danger to people and small animals.

NOTE: The Destination Truth team traveled to Chile, by way of Lima, Peru, to an area approximately 400 KMs south of the Nazca plains where local indians have reported seeing strange lights and small humanoids going in and out of caves. The team discover a carcass of an unknown creature buried in a cave. When they exit, they witness a bright light hovering over the horizon. As well, the parabolic dish EMITS unusual sounds and is unplugged (parabolics gather....not emits sounds!). Very strange indeed...Lon

Strange Halo Cloud Phenomenon Over Moscow

Click for video - Millions of residents in Moscow witnessed a strange bright ring-shaped cloud hanging over the city’s western districts on Wednesday.

Scientists from the city’s weather forecast service say there is nothing supernatural about it, however.

“It’s a purely optical effect, even if a spectacular one. You can see really strange things if you watch the clouds regularly,” Vesti24 TV channel, which published a mobile phone camera video sent to them by an eyewitness, cites the service.

“Several air fronts have passed Moscow recently, including an inflow of cold air from Arctic, and they combined to produce such a phenomenon,” the source added.

Witch Conjures Demon to Dwell in Church

cambridge-news - A witch who plans to open an occult centre in Cambridge says he has conjured up a demon - in the city's Catholic Church.

Magus Lynius Shadee says the demon could possess parishioners and drive them to suicide.

He claims to have instructed the evil spirit to "dwell" in the famous church to "cleanse it".

The occultist, who calls himself the King of All Witches, says he let loose the entity to prey on worshippers at the Church of Our Lady and the English Martyrs in Hills Road.

Fr Dick Healey has branded the occultist "twisted" and plans to report him to the police for practising witchcraft in a church.

He said: "He should be reported to the police. It's as if someone came into your home and performed some sort of magic trick without your permission.

"He's obviously a bit twisted to perform witchcraft in a church.

"We will not be performing an exorcism, but I will consider reporting him to the police."

Mr Shadee, a Frenchman with an occult centre in Normandy, claims to have made the "incantation" to evoke the demon on a visit to the city to look for a site for his occult centre, which he plans to open on December 24.

He said: "It's an element, a hunter that will attach itself to an individual, then try to take the person, either send them insane and make them depressed, and the worst is to cause them to take their physical life.

"I did not speak to the priest, just performed a visual ritual format, an incantation, to bring in an element to dwell within the building.

"When I perform, unless it's within the confines of a ritual room, most of my work is on my own with associates observing."

Fr David Paul, of St Laurence's Roman Catholic Church in Milton Road, fears the occultist's move into the city is to target university students, as the News reported.

Now the witch hopes to "convert" the priest.

He said: "I will have to visit Mr David Paul's church and perform a ritual for him - perhaps he will be converted."

Police said a potential crime under the Public Order Act could have been committed if anyone was in the church at the time of the ritual and was alarmed or distressed by it.

Edgar Allan Poe to Receive the Funeral He Should Have Had

Jeff Jerome, curator of the Poe House and Museum looks over a replica of the body of Edgar Allan Poe, in Baltimore, Monday, Oct. 5, 2009. The Poe House will host a viewing of a replica of the body of Poe on Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2009, followed by the funeral he never had on Sunday. - For Edgar Allan Poe, 2009 has been a better year than 1849. After dozens of events in several cities to mark the 200th anniversary of his birth, he's about to get the grand funeral that a writer of his stature should have received when he died.

One hundred sixty years ago, the beleaguered, impoverished Poe was found, delirious and in distress outside a Baltimore tavern. He was never coherent enough to explain what had befallen him since leaving Richmond, Va., a week earlier. He spent four days in a hospital before he died at age 40.

Poe's cousin, Neilson Poe, never announced his death publicly. Fewer than 10 people attended the hasty funeral for one of the 19th century's greatest writers. And the injustices piled on. Poe's tombstone was destroyed before it could be installed, when a train derailed and crashed into a stonecutter's yard. Rufus Griswold, a Poe enemy, published a libelous obituary that damaged Poe's reputation for decades.

But on Sunday, Poe's funeral will get an elaborate do-over, with two services expected to draw about 350 people each — the most a former church next to his grave can hold. Actors portraying Poe's contemporaries and other long-dead writers and artists will pay their respects, reading eulogies adapted from their writings about Poe.

"We are following the proper etiquette for funerals. We want to make it as realistic as possible," said Jeff Jerome, curator of the Poe House and Museum.

Advance tickets are sold out, although Jerome will make some seats available at the door to ensure packed houses. Fans are traveling from as far away as Vietnam.

The funeral is arguably the splashiest of a year's worth of events honoring the 200th anniversary of Poe's birth. Along with Baltimore — where he spent some of his leanest years in the mid-1830s — Poe lived in or has strong connections to Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Richmond.

With the funeral angle covered, the Edgar Allan Poe Museum in Richmond staged a re-enactment last weekend of his death. Those with a more academic interest in Poe can attend the Poe Studies Association's annual conference from Thursday through Sunday in Philadelphia.

Visitors in Baltimore for the funeral can enjoy a new exhibit at the Baltimore Museum of Art, "Edgar Allan Poe: A Baltimore Icon," which includes chilling illustrations to "The Raven" by Edouard Manet.

Baltimore has a decided advantage over the other cities that lay claim to Poe, notes BMA director Doreen Bolger. "We have the body," she said.

This week, that's true in more ways than one. Jerome said he's gotten calls from people who thought he was going to exhume Poe's remains and rebury them.

"When they dug up Poe's body in 1875 to move it, it was mostly skeletal remains," Jerome said. "I've seen remains of people who've been in the ground since that time period, and there's hardly anything left."

Instead, Jerome commissioned local special-effects artist Eric Supensky to create an eerily lifelike — or deathlike — mock-up of Poe's corpse.

"I got chills," Jerome said Monday upon seeing the body for the first time. "This is going to freak people out."

The body will lie in state for 12 hours Wednesday at the Poe House, a tiny rowhome in a gritty section of west Baltimore. Visitors are invited to pay their respects.

Following the viewing will be an all-night vigil at Poe's grave at Westminster Burying Ground. Anyone who attends will have the opportunity to deliver a tribute.

On Sunday morning, a horse-drawn carriage will transport the replica of Poe's body from his former home to the graveyard for the funeral.

Actor John Astin, best known as Gomez Addams on TV's "The Addams Family," will serve as master of ceremonies.

"It's sort of a way of saying, 'Well, Eddie, your first funeral wasn't a very good one, but we're going to try to make it up to you, because we have so much respect for you,'" said Astin, who toured as Poe for years in a one-man show.

The service won't be a total lovefest, however. The first eulogy will come from none other than Griswold.

"People are asking me, 'Jeff, why are you inviting him? He hated Poe!'" Jerome said. "The reason is, most of these people defended Poe in response to what he said about Poe's life, so we can't have this service without having old Rufus sitting in the front row, spewing forth his hatred."

Eulogies will follow from actors portraying, among others, Sarah Helen Whitman, a minor poet whom Poe courted after his wife's death, and Walt Whitman, who attended the dedication of Poe's new gravestone in 1875 but didn't feel well enough to speak. Writers and artists influenced by Poe, including Arthur Conan Doyle and Alfred Hitchcock, will also be represented.

Jerome expects to cry — one reason he won't be speaking. Even his rivals are impressed with the scale of the tribute.

"Annoyed as I am with Baltimore sometimes, I have to give them credit," said Philadelphia-based Poe scholar Edward Pettit, who argues his city was of greater importance to Poe's life and literary career. "Baltimore has done an awful lot to maintain the legacy of Poe over the last 100-some years."

NOTE: The Poe House has a variety of paranormal activity. I've been there for a seance several years ago and I have talked to several mediums who have gone through the house. Poe's spirit definitely lingers in the area and a dark cloaked apparition is seen moving along the streets at night. As far as the house, the activity seems to be that of a female spirit who is known to appear during tours on occasion.

THE EDGAR ALLAN POE HOUSE AND MUSEUM - Every city has a great deal of history, but Baltimore in particular has a lot of haunted history, which makes it the perfect place to be on Halloween. For those looking to celebrate Halloween in a more historical way, the Edgar Allan Poe House and Museum holds a special performance in honor of the fall holiday.

The Edgar Allan Poe House and Museum is located in the city, not far from Poe’s actual gravesite. It is a small house that consists of five main rooms: an entranceway room, a kitchen and three bedrooms. Poe’s bedroom is located in the attic of the house, and the tiny home includes no bathrooms of any sort.

“Poe’s room, as well as the house, can be so small because people used to be a lot shorter back when he was alive,” said Jeff Jerome, the curator of the museum. “Poe was 5-foot-8-inches, which was tall back then. The average height of men was 5-foot-5-inches.”

The staircase leading up to Poe's attic can barely fit one person at a time. Everything about the house where Poe grew up reeks of a time when things were different, when Baltimore wasn't even a city.

"When Poe lived here, Baltimore was very country. When he looked out his window he saw fields," said Jerome.

That was back in the 1830s. Today, 175 years later, Baltimore is a completely different place. However, the Poe house still stands and other than a small addition to the kitchen and some missing furniture, it stands in the same condition as it did back when Poe began to write short stories.

This timeline tells more about Poe's history in Baltimore.

The tour of the Edgar Allan Poe House and Museum is mostly self-guided, but Jerome, who has been curator since 1979, is more than willing to answer any questions.

“I just hate when people who have visited the house ask me if I live here. There’s just no way that I could.”

Instead, Jerome resides in Anne Arundel County.

“Many people think that I live and breathe Poe,” he said, “but really, I’m just good at what I do. I don’t think I’ll ever reach a point where I can say that I know all there is to know about Poe. It’s like any job, and I like that I’m always learning new things.”

Jerome was surprised to find out that Poe enjoyed the story of “Frankenstein,” and that he was allergic to perfume.

Before becoming curator of the museum, Jerome did volunteer work for the city.

“I really like Baltimore because of the people here. Everything in this city is nearby, as opposed to a big city like New York,” he said. Jerome also said that the house is interesting for any visitor.

“I don’t suggest kids coming to the Halloween performance though.”

The play can be pretty scary. It’s held in the overcrowded bedroom of Virginia Poe, Poe’s cousin who was also his wife.

“When Poe married his cousin, she was 13 years old and he was seven,” Jerome said. “This may sound weird, but applying today’s social standards to a time when things were different is unfair. Consider that women during this time had a life expectancy of about 25 years, and in Maryland law even today it is legal for cousins to get married.”

People back then married inside of their families because of money.

“It was a way for them to keep their money,” he said. “But Poe didn’t have any money, so in his case it must have been love. Even people that hated Poe could not say anything about him and Virginia because they really were in love.”

The Halloween play does not capture this romance. It is actually an acting out of one of Poe’s poems. This year, local actor Tony Tsendeas performed “A Tell-Tale Heart.” Tsendeas has been performing for the Halloween play on and off for 20 years.

“We started the play in 1983 because people were asking for a Halloween event,” said Jerome. “Since then we have decided that A Tell-Tale Heart,' is the best poem to perform because it’s quick and easy to follow along with.”

Some years, when Tsendeas doesn’t perform, a Poe look-a-like comes in and performs monologues from Poe’s point of view.

“Either way it’s good way to get the local talent out there,” Jerome said.

Every year, the play is performed throughout the day on the Saturday and Sunday before and after Halloween.

As for whether the ghost of Poe comes out during the season, Jerome really has no comment.

If Only The Paranormal Could Remove That On-Going Black Eye!

A fellow paranormal investigator called me yesterday. We were talking about the sightings of UFO’s all over the world. We noted how the subject of ghosts and unknown strange events seem to always spike in occurrence during the month of October. We realize that this may be due in part to it being Halloween season. We also think there is a natural cycle that seems to bring about paranormal events during this time of year.

While talking with my paranormal pal she brought up her aggravation with the reaction so many have to unknown subjects. Like many who try to investigate or write about these things the difficulty of dealing with those we are trying to share information with can be very depressing.

Many who have tried to bring the truth of the paranormal to the public have simply walked away. Discussing this is when my pal blurted out:” If only we could stop the on going slap in the face that constantly gives the paranormal a on going Black Eye- we could maybe figure things out!”

Her statement is true as those who do try to spread the information on these subjects face constant hurdles and barriers by way of the frauds, skeptics, frightened and ignorant. The fact so many people place so much time and effort in clouding the arena with fake reports, false claims, faked photo’s and video’s keeps the subjects in the paranormal at a dead end.

Many people simply ridicule that which they do not want to understand. Others show apathy with little on no interest at all. The majority of society seems self-involved with daily life and do not care what is going on past their own nose. It is no deep mystery why disclosure has not and will not be necessary. Those who have real knowledge about these subjects are protected by way of our own hands. We willingly stay in the dark, which makes the need to disclose unnecessary. We keep ourselves locked in the dark by our own hands.

The hands that fake the video’s, the hands that Photoshop the photo’s, the hands that make up ridiculous scenario’s of false abductions or sightings, the hands that fake ghost voices or claim light actions of cheap cameras are spiritual orbs- all those hands keep us dumb and living in the dark of what will remain the unknown.

Of course the Internet has increased this mess to the point where an alien race could land on the Brooklyn Bridge and the public would tease, laugh and ridicule whoever witnessed the event. We have been trained by all the dirty hands polluting these subjects to simply mix all the nonsense with the real events leaving it all a pile of tangled confusion.

I have spoken to credible honest good people who will not talk openly about the encounters they have lived through. They fear the reaction of those they live and work with. That fear of rejection is far worse then the actual event they endured. How sad is it that we have been trained to reject the very things we need to be exploring? It leaves us with a constant black eye on the world of the paranormal. So many dirty hands do produce one heck of a shiner!

I watch as the need to be seen, heard or paid attention to have people rushing to report a sighting they did not have or abduction that never took place. In time you can spot the frauds by a mile, as they tend to over do the report. They also use ridiculous similarities that thread the fakes from the true experiences. Those who have had real encounters are often similar in the way they report events. It does not take long to separate those who are truthful to those who are not.

It is sad so many people spend hours carrying out these fraudulent claims. I am sure they are looking for fame, glory or money. Those who work in this subject matter will gladly tell you there is little fame or glory in this work and money is long and hard to come by. If those are you motives you are in the wrong area for sure.

The people who are in need of attention or extremely lonely who use the paranormal are more difficult to contend with. I think many may need help from trained professionals and should not be lost in an area that could increase their anxiety. Finding lost souls in a world that can be slick and harsh is always sad. However those who make fake video’s or photo shop a fake sighting to show off their skills are truly the ones delivering the worst black eyes to those trying to swim against the odds to the truth of paranormal events.

It would be wonderful if those lost in fantasy would stick to science fiction. It would be great for them to keep that sensation of silly stories that fill them with movie house giggles and screams in their movie theaters. It would be wonderful if we could split the turf leaving the attention thrill seekers to their games and those who are living the real deal free to speak out without fear of being abused when they speak out about extraordinary events they have encountered.

I have been walking these confusing roads for most of my lifetime. I try to sort out the truthful from the frauds. It is difficult at times for even the most hardened interviewer to be sure about those we talk to and write about. We try to use our backgrounds, experience, and gut feelings to the best of our ability. Unfortunately we make mistakes and believe those who have private agenda’s. The Paranormal is used and abused by so many that the truth often gets lost in the confusion.

I do know as it stands real honest sightings and encounters with the unknown are washed down in importance by the dirty hands inflicting the black eyes of false statements and photo’s.

Next time you become angry at the way we are all kept in the dark about so many things paranormal understand a great deal of it is of our own doing.

As it stands the subjects of the paranormal are the best laugh around. As it now exists we spend hours faking reports and video’s. We keep things unknown a huge joke. As long as this remains the norm the subjects of the unknown will never become known and the truth will remain lost to our own ignorance. I am afraid the paranormal will remain this way until we grow up and become adult enough to deal with them.

Look at how we allow the very people who should be protecting us the freedom to call every recent sighting Chinese lanterns or reflective lights from other sources. We are the ones who willingly and quickly laugh at those who see things they do not understand and willingly accept all ridiculous explanations without question.

Until we stop all these actions towards these subjects we will forever remain locked in the Dark Ages of the Unknown.

A short time ago along a friend and I witnessed a strange bright orb type craft hovering over the Long Island Sound. The Sound is a large body of water between Long Island New York and Connecticut. This week I read many people in Connecticut also witnessed strange crafts flying over their state. I knew at once that what I had seen and what they were seeing had to be connected. I also knew it would be fruitless to try to connect the two as the police in Connecticut where already on the ridicule train tagging the sightings Chinese Lanterns. I am wondering who owns this large gaggle of Chinese lanterns as they seem to be simply being let loose all over the world lately? I think they are playing out the lantern excuse for all it is worth. I also know what I saw that night and it was NOT a Chinese lantern!

I hope some of you give thought to what we have done to our own road towards knowledge concerning the world of the unknown.

I know until we can deal with our own fears concerning these things we will remain in the dark. Until we have had enough of those who keep us fools and fooled we will remain as we are- standing in the dark with a big black eye!

Paranormal Sleuths Reappear at the Venetian Theatre - While the audience watched the closing minutes of “Death of a Salesman” in The Venetian Theatre’s auditorium Saturday night, a team of paranormal investigators set up equipment, hoping to capture a performance of a different sort.

Greg Gieler, co-leader Chris York and 10 other members of Rain City Paranormal planned to spend the night in the darkened building, watching for a sign from any of the spirits that may lurk in the refurbished theater and bistro at 253 Main St.

On July 25, Gieler had led a smaller investigation at the invitation of owners Denzil Scheller and Saxony Peterson. Since the Venetian’s opening in the summer of 2008, its staff had witnessed a number of unexplainable events. Lights and music have turned on and off unassisted. Phantoms, including a gray-haired man who favors one of the auditorium’s back-row seats, have made multiple appearances.

During their summer inquiry, Gieler’s team had themselves witnessed a strange phenomenon in the projection room when the temperature rose and then fell one degree at a time upon verbal request. Also, a review of recordings had revealed voices, inaudible to those present, one clearly saying “I’m sorry…sorry.”

Based on those discoveries, an expanded team set up even more equipment for this second visit. Four infrared cameras would constantly surveil the main foyer, the auditorium, the projection room and the second floor hallway. Two team members stayed at “base camp” to monitor a computer screen and the images from those cameras.

Meanwhile the remaining 10 team members, accompanied by an Argus reporter, split into two groups and began their investigations. They carried audio recorders and K2 electromagnetic field detectors. The EMF meters would sense changes in electrical energy that paranormal investigators think may be caused by spirits. Those readings could be compared to baseline measurements collected by the team as part of their setup procedures.

One team headed to the dressing rooms beneath the stage and began the procedure that would be repeated throughout the building’s many rooms.

Everyone took a seat in the darkened room and, with the audio recorders running, identified themselves for the record. Each sound was labeled, leading to comments such as “my stomach growled” and “adjusting my seat.” The team waited for a noise no one claimed.

None came.

One by one, team members made requests in soft voices. “If you’re here, please let us know by making the lights change on that device over there with the green light,” indicating the EMF detector.

The lights didn’t waver.

They asked questions: Had the spirit worked in the theater? What was the year? Did it want the team to stay, or leave the room?

No response came.

After 20 minutes or so, the team shifted to the stage and began again.

Nothing happened. Over two-way radios, everyone agreed to meet back at the base camp.

Gieler speculated the spirits might be overwhelmed by the presence of so many people at once, so he next sent out two-person teams for another round of observations.

A team led by Chris York climbed the narrow stairway to the projection room. They began their questioning, at one point requesting the spirit tap in response. A loud thud came from below.

York descended to check if someone had banged the door at the base of the staircase. No one had. A call went out for teams in other parts of the building to repeat recent actions, while those in the projection room listened to see if those sounds reproduced what they had heard.

The thud remained unexplained, the only such event to occur during hours of close observation. The time approached 1:30 a.m.

In the next weeks, the investigators will comb through hours of film and audio recordings and use special software to search for speech concealed beyond audible frequencies.

In the meantime, the primary message from Saturday night’s long investigation was that paranormal investigations require great patience.

Persistent Spirits Haunt Oregon Theater - It's closing time at the Venetian Theater and Bistro, and a staff member heads into the auditorium.

A tall, gray-haired man remains in the back-most row of seats. "It's time to leave," he's told. He does, only not through the door. He simply disappears.

Saxony Peterson, co-owner of the theater at 253 Main St., says the same man has appeared three different times and to different people too.

If this were the only odd occurrence at the Venetian, it might be blamed on late hours, power of suggestion or the overactive imaginations of a weary crew. But it's not.

Peterson said, during play rehearsals, Bag and Baggage's Scott Palmer has heard unexplained footsteps crossing the stage. Staff returning from the upper dining area reported turning off the lights and music, only to have them come back on as they started down the stairs. This happens regularly, she said.

Normal work flow in the kitchen was once interrupted by water streaming from above. After mopping up, the crew removed the ceiling panels to find the leak's source. Peterson said they found no water pipes, nothing there containing any water. Strangest of all, the removed panels were not even damp, even though a flood had passed through them not long before.

Then there's Dale Buck's experience. One night she was alone in the auditorium, on her way to check the rear exit door, when she heard whispers coming from the left side of the room. Then a "big rush of cold air came past my left ear," she said. "It was colored gray and black, and as it passed my ear, it whispered 'stop.' "

So Peterson and Denzil Scheller invited a team of paranormal investigators, volunteers from the International Paranormal Reporting Group, to conduct an investigation. IPRG, which itself has allied teams in Idaho, Oregon, Montana and Germany, is recognized by The Atlantic Paranormal Society. TAPS, for fans of events that defy scientific explanation, is the group behind the Ghost Hunters show on the Syfy network.

The team came to The Venetian on July 25. They brought digital voice recorders, infrared cameras, temperature sensors and K-2 meters for reading electromagnetic disturbances.

Greg Gieler, who led the IPRG investigators, reported back to Peterson and Scheller Aug. 18 with IPRG's findings.

Gieler set up his laptop on a table in the Venetian Bistro. He explained how he'd pored through hours of recordings made at The Venetian searching for electronic voice phenomena. Such EVPs are disembodied voices, or sounds with no explainable source, that are picked up by recording devices but are not audible to people present at the time.

Passing headphones around the table, everyone present took turns listening to the examples Gieler had discovered. In one, recorded in the theater's projection room, a voice could be clearly and slowly, saying, "Sorry ... I'm sorry ... sorry."

Gieler said paranormal events, by their very nature, have no scientific explanation. That's why they are "paranormal." IPRG, first of all, tries to find a verifiable cause for its findings. The EVPs, like other such incidents don't have one. That doesn't stop ghost hunters from speculating on their nature. In this case, Gieler said, spirits may make use of some actual source -- perhaps a chair sliding back -- and draw it out to create a word.

Investigators also had a strange encounter in the theater's projection room.

As background, Scheller emphasized that room is the only climate-controlled space in the building. The heat given off by the projector in a confined space makes it necessary to keep a constant temperature of about 68 degrees.

Gieler said, he could feel the temperature warming while he was in the projection room, so he asked the presence to raise the temperature to exactly 70 degrees. His sensor measured 70. Then, by steps, he asked for 71, then 72, then 73 degrees. Each time the temperature rose to the requested point and held until asked to go higher.

Gieler said he then said aloud, "If you make it go to 78 degrees, I promise I won't ask you to go higher because I know it's really hard." That happened. And the process repeated this time in reverse, back down to 68 degrees.

Gieler thinks The Venetian is an interesting enough site to warrant further investigation. He asked Scheller whether he would be interested in hosting a TAPS boot camp, a ticketed event in which up to 60 paranormal investigators gather.

In the meantime, Bag and Baggage is preparing for its first play of the new season. Peterson says the unexplainable events seem to increase whenever more people are in the theater's space.

MUFON witness report: I went out my back yard to a field that is an old golf course. I had my camera with me as I usually do. I noticed a bright white round ball in the sky. I began shooting pictures and then took some video footage of this object as it went from right to left (west to east). I would estimate this object as being over a mile away. I continued taping until the object could not be seen as it passed behind the trees. There was no noise that i could detect. It also looked to be shimmering, or reflective.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Ouija Board Found

deadlinescotland - A OUIJA board thought to have been used by the creator of Sherlock Holmes has been found in a secret compartment at a school of paranormal studies.

Staff at the Edinburgh College of Parapsychology found the occult Victorian device hidden in small cupboard built into a kitchen wall, 20 feet out of reach.

The spooky find – used to spell out messages during a Séance – is thought to have been used by mystery writer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

The device was found with its original packaging, and was labelled as a “Telepathic Spirit Communicator.”

Edinburgh-born Doyle immersed himself in the practice of spiritualism in 1906, after his wife Louisa and son Kingsley died.Doyle found solace in the practice, which believes that contact can be made with people beyond the grave. The area is even said to have influenced his writing, and his novel, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, was even banned in the Soviet Union because it was said to be occultist.

Roberta Gordon, 62, a medium and president of the college, said the Victorian device was found along with a “Dungeon Tube” with is said to use musical vibrations to relieve pain.

She said: “We were very excited to be quite honest.

“Arthur Conan Doyle was very much into spiritualism so there is every chance he would have seen some of the equipment we found.”

“There is no way we will be parting with any of it though – it’s part of our heritage.”

Roberta’s husband Richard, 66, from Gullane, East Lothian added: “We’ve found quite a few unusual things while we’ve been clearing out the building, like strange recordings.

“The college has been here for 77 years so there’s a lot to find.

“I believe Doyle used to frequent the building.

“And it’s well known that he was a spiritualist – it’s very possible that he used the board.

“The board was made in Manchester, and we’ve got the packaging as well.

“We’re not sure how old it is yet, but the wheels are made of bone – not plastic or wood.”

Roberta and husband Richard have spent the last few months renovating the building, which is in the upmarket west end of the city.

But the ouija board is not the first unsettling discovery the couple have made.

They’ve also found old records containing medium sessions and red lights used during Derren Brown style séances.

Roberta said: “We had been told there was paint stored in one of the high-up cupboards, so we set about looking for it.

“But instead we discovered all of this – we couldn’t believe it.”

The college was founded in 1932, but followers of spiritualism existed long before then, often operating in secret for fear of persecution by the authorities.

Has 'Jack the Ripper' Finally Been Identified? - Mei Trow used modern police forensic techniques, including psychological and geographical profiling, to identify Robert Mann, a morgue attendant, as the killer.

His theory, the result of two years intensive research, is explored in a Discovery Channel documentary, Jack the Ripper: Killer Revealed.

Trow's research is rooted in information from a 1988 FBI examination of the Ripper case, which had worked up a comprehensive criminal personality profile.

The portrait drawn up of Jack was as a white male from the lower social classes, most likely the product of a broken home.

It was also thought he would have had a menial job but with some anatomical knowledge, something like a butcher, mortuary or medical examiner's assistant or hospital attendant.

Because of prolonged periods without human interaction, Jack would also have been socially inept

It is known that Mann was from an extremely deprived background. His father was absent for much of his upbringing and he had spent some time as a child in a workhouse.

Trow said: "I wanted to go beyond the myth of a caped man with a top hat and knife, and get to the reality, and the reality is simply that Jack was an ordinary man."

Trow makes another startling conjecture, that the Ripper killed another two women.

He believes Martha Tabram, found with 39 stab wounds to her body in Gunthorpe Street, was the first of Jack's victims, and Alice Mackenzie, brutally murdered eight months after the confirmed five killings, was his last.

The two women, along with Polly Nichols and Annie Chapman, would have been delivered to the Whitechapel mortuary in which Robert Mann worked.

After the killing of Polly Nichols, Jack's first recognised victim, Mann unlocked the mortuary for the police so they could examine the body and as such, was called as a witness in her inquest to help establish the cause of death.

Most damningly, he undressed Polly's body with his assistant, despite being under strict instructions from Inspector Spratling to not touch the body, and Trow suspects that this was an opportunity to admire his handiwork.

The Coroner, in his summation of Robert Mann's testimony, concluded that, "It appears the mortuary-keeper is subject to fits, and neither his memory nor statements are reliable."

Professor Laurence Alison, Forensic Psychologist at Liverpool University, who features in the documentary, said: "In terms of psychological profiling, Robert Mann is the one of the most credible suspects from recent years and the closest we may ever get to a plausible psychological explanation for these most infamous of Victorian murders."

Trow's is the latest in a long line of theories about who Jack the Ripper was. More than 100 suspects have been proposed over the years, including a member of the royal family, a doctor and even the artist Walter Sickert.

JACK THE RIPPER: KILLER REVEALED will be aired on the Discovery Channel on Sunday October 11 at 9pm. The accompanying book, Jack the Ripper: Quest for a Killer, is published by Pen & Sword.

'Jack the Ripper' Indentified by Relative of Police Chief in Charge

THE Jack the Ripper ‘industry’ got a boost on the 120th anniversary of his first acknowledged murder.

The great-grandson of the police chief in charge of the 1888 Whitechapel Murders arrived at the Ripper exhibition at the Museum in Docklands in East London—just before the 120th anniversary of the murder Mary Ann Nichols, a prostitute known as ‘Polly,’ believed by many to be his first victim.

He arrived with evidence from his Victorian ancestor revealing the Ripper’s true identity.

Jack the Ripper was never caught and his identity has remained a mystery for 120 years, feeding a whole ‘industry’ that has evolved worldwide with ‘Ripperologists’ keen to tell us who he really was.

One of the strong theories re-emerged this week was when Nevill Swanson, great-grandson of Chief Inspector Donald Swanson, turned up at the museum in Canary Wharf to see the exhibition before it closes in November.

“My great-grandfather knew who Jack the Ripper was,” Nevill told the East London Advertiser.

“He solved the case—but police couldn’t prosecute because the only witness who could identify the killer in a court of law wouldn’t testify.”

Donald Swanson scribbled who he knew to be Jack the Ripper in the margin of a copy of the memoirs of Sir Robert Anderson, Assistant Metropolitan Police Commissioner at the time of the Whitechapel Murders, in a chapter that just referred to the main suspect, but not by name.

“The suspect was Kosminsky,” Swanson pencilled in.

Aaron Kosminsky was a Polish immigrant living in Whitechapel who had been ‘identified’ by another Polish emigre, who then refused to take the witness stand.

“The police knew the case would collapse in court,” Swanson’s great-grandson added.

“He knew Kosminsky would get away with it—so he had him committed to an asylum instead.

“There were no more murders after that.”

It was Nevill’s father who uncovered the margin notes from the family possessions when Nevill’s great aunt—daughter of Chief Inspector Swanson—died in 1978. The book with the margin notes was left to Nevill’s father.

But the story got buried for several years after he sold the rights to the News of the World in a deal worth £1,000, Nevill remembers. For some reason, the notes were never published.

It wasn’t until 2001—some 113 years after the Whitechapel Murders—that the Kosminsky theory finally emerged.

“My father died in 2001 and the book with the margin notes came down to me,” Nevill added. “I knew the significance of the notes and have since loaned the book to Scotland Yard’s Black Museum.”

It is a strong and compelling theory—but would spoil the ‘Ripper Industry’ if even this was not challenged by rival theories over the Ripper’s identity.

The marginalia was probably added some time after 1910, and Anderson wouldn’t have known anything that Swanson hadn’t told him, a reader has informed us.

Martin Fido was the person who identified Kosminsky by going through asylum records.

This week, the Australians bowled their own theory to stump the Ripperology world with a claim that it wasn’t Kosminsky at all—but an immigrant named Walter Thomas Porriott who is now buried in a cemetery in Brisbane.

The Brisbane Times claims that Porriott, another suspect on Scotland Yard’s list, was the real Jack the Ripper.

Porriott was living at Limehouse in East London at the time, just two miles from Whitechapel. He was a convicted killer, a conman, bigamist and quack doctor known to hate prostitutes, the paper insists.

The murders ended as soon as Porriott emigrated in 1888. He died in Brisbane in 1952, some 62 years later.

But there’s more... Members of the renowned Whitechapel Society—dedicated to research into East London’s Victorian and Edwardian society and the 1888 Whitechapel Murders—hold a ‘21st century public investigation’ at the Museum in Docklands this Saturday (September 6), where the most comprehensive Ripper exhibition ever has been staged all summer.

They are promising “fresh photographic evidence” when the ‘investigation’ begins at 3pm.

Three authors are putting their theories to the public, Trevor Marriott, Bill Beadle (the society’s chairman) and Frogg Moody.

Ripperologists, of course, are a determined breed, determined to keep the fires of the ‘industry’ burning with different theories—and doubtless will continue to keep them burning for the next 120 years.

The Ripper Casebook: Open to the Public

'PC.97J. NEIL reports at 3.45.a[m] 31st inst, he found the dead body of a woman lying on her back with her clothes a little above her knees...' So begins a vivid account on lined notepaper, by a Superintendent J Keating, under the heading 'Metropolitan Police'. The ink seems as fresh as a morning newspaper. Yet it is dated 31 August, 1888.

This is one of the police reports filed just hours after Jack the Ripper claimed another victim in London's East End. It is one of numerous documents relating to the Victorian killer which, after more than a century in the archives, are to go on public display for the first time.

Handwritten accounts from the scenes of the crimes, detectives' case reports, coroners' inquiry records, witness statements, photographs and letters will form the centrepiece of a major exhibition, 'Jack the Ripper and the East End', at the Museum in Docklands, London. Visitors will not be spared graphic descriptions, such as 'her throat cut from ear to ear', in the retelling of the bloody and gruesome crimes.

'They are absolutely amazing,' said Julia Hoffbrand, curator of the exhibition. 'They were written on the day each woman was found, so as a step by step account you get a real sense of what happened. The documents bring home the fact that these are real people and real events. They are very moving.'

The files were first kept at Scotland Yard, then transferred to the National Archives in Kew, west London. But due to their fragile condition they could only be viewed on microfiche. 'It's a rare opportunity to see the actual documents in the original ink,' Hoffbrand said.

The police report of 31 August 1888 continues: Dr. Llewellyn, No.152 Whitechapel Ro[ad]... arrived quickly and pronounced life to be extinct, apparently but [a] few minutes, he directed her removed to the mortuary, stating he would make a further examination there, which was done on the ambulance. It has since been ascertained that the dress bears the marks of Lambeth Workhouse and deceased is supposed to have been an inmate of that house.'

Jack the Ripper is believed to have killed five prostitutes in or near Whitechapel in 10 weeks between August and November 1888. More than 170 names have been put forward as suspects including the Duke of Clarence, the artist Walter Sickert, who had a morbid obsession with the killings, Montague John Druitt, a barrister who took his own life just after the last murder, and Michael Ostrog, a Russian thief. Books, plays, films and musicals have mythologised the killer and every night tourists walk the same streets on a guided Jack the Ripper walk.

A letter purportedly from the Ripper to the police will also be on display. Dated 7 November 1888, the handwritten scrawl states: 'Dear Boss, I am writing you this while I am in bed with a sore throat but as soon as it is better I will set to work again on the 13th of this month and I think that my next Job will be to polish you off and as I am a member of the force I can soon settle accounts with you I will tear your liver out before you are dead and show it to you.' The letter, signed Jack the Ripper, has a crude drawing of a man, but remains one of many tantalising clues.

Among the documents are witness statements to coroners as well as contemporary press reports. At the inquest into the death of Catherine Eddowes, whose mutilated body was found in Mitre Square in Aldgate, her daughter Annie Phillips tells of her father's separation from her mother: 'He had no ill will to my knowledge against Deceased [Catherine Eddowes]. He left Deceased between 7 & 8 years ago entirely on account of her Drinking Habits.'

Like Eddowes, Mary Ann Nichols was found with her throat cut, in Buck's Row, Whitechapel. On her last evening alive, she is reported as having said: 'I'll soon get my "doss" money; see what a jolly bonnet I've got now.'

The exhibition, which opens on 15 May, will also feature maps and recordings from people who grew up in the slums of Whitechapel. Donald Rumbelow, a leading expert on the Ripper and co-author of Jack the Ripper: Scotland Yard Investigates, welcomed the exhibition. 'To see the documents out of the mounts will be quite something.'

Same Ghost, Different Name, Haunts Tucson Bar - It is an old establishment with a new identity. Gooch’s Grill at 1118 E. Sixth Street opened in July.

Chances are that you have driven by, or maybe even stopped in to the place before; perhaps during one of the establishment’s past lives. Before it was Gooch’s Grill, it was called The Victory Bar. Before that, it was Belushe’s Bar and Grill. Many Tucsonans might still identify the location as The Rhino Pub. The only thing that has remained consistent about the location throughout the building’s existence, is the rumor that a resident ghost lurks inside.

At the risk of sounding cliché, spirits, in more than one sense of the word, are on tap at Gooch’s Grill.

Employees and patrons alike acknowledge the fact that strange things are afoot at the bar after closing time. Bottle caps are flicked by unseen fingers throughout the bar. The swinging saloon style doors that lead up to the second floor office will swing back and forth for no apparent reason. The ghostly figure of a woman appears to some folks. The frequent sound of crying can be heard. Lights turn off or on by themselves. The previous owner of the bar, when it was Belushe’s, witnessed the bar’s televisions operating by themselves. It is a classic haunting.

Property owner Lon Wirtz has always disclosed the fact that the property is stigmatized, or haunted, to each enterprising bar owner who has occupied the property. Now, Gooch’s Grill occupies that spooky space.

Gooch himself states that The Atlantic Paranormal Society (TAPS) from the Syfy Channel’s television series, Ghost Hunters, has been invited to investigate the establishment. Whether or not Ghost Hunters’ Jay and Grant will show up to debunk or prove that the place is haunted, remains undetermined at the moment.

The identity of the ghost is unknown. Wirtz believes that before he built an addition onto the property several years ago, that a woman had been brutally raped and murdered on that very spot many years before. It is also rumored that the property operated as a bordello at one time, decades ago.

If ghosts scare you, don’t let this one scare you away from Gooch’s. The entire time I have visited the location over the last 15 years, I have never heard of the ghost emerging from the darkness until closing time or after. Just don’t stay that long. If lack of parking in the UA area scares you, there’s ample parking behind Gooch’s Grill, accessible from the first alleyway behind the building, south of Sixth Street.

More often than not, you might find Gooch himself at the bar, chatting with his customers. Occasionally, you might even find me on the front patio of the bar, gazing up toward the second floor window, hoping to lock eyes with the ghost.

Though her identity is unknown, the ghost likely has grown accustomed to nicknames over the years. She can now be referred to as: Gooch’s ghost.

Woman Believes She Reunites With Lost Pet's Spirit - A Whitby woman is hoping to track down a pair of dog owners after a spooky incident left her searching for answers.

Retired Yorkshire Post worker Jean Day had a bizarre day on a recent trip to Sandsend.

Having lost her faithful pet Yorkshire terrier Snoopy two years ago she now believes that he may not have gone far away.

She said: “I was in the Bridge Cafe with a friend, hitherto a place unknown to me. We had sought refuge in a storm and were grateful for a latte.”

She said her friend made her aware that someone outside was trying to get her attention.

She added: “The stranger explained how the couple’s dog watched my approach to the cafe becoming most excited, almost demented, then listening to my voice though out of sight, clamored to reach me. Would I so kindly agree to meet and pacify him? As a devoted dog lover, I agreed.

“Just two years before I had lost my soul-mate and treasured Snoopy, a Yorkshire Terrier.

“Asking its breed I was astounded to hear theirs was a Yorkie.

“Mine had reached 14 years, became very ill and had to be put to sleep from suffering further.

“Oscar, she said, was 18 months.

“As we approached the garden table my searching eyes met the frantic welcome of their Yorkie leaping towards me as if in recognition.

“The couple were bemused by our make-believe reunion.”

Jean said she does not believe in reincarnation but the coincidences played on her mind.

“I muttered to his owners ‘this just has to be the spirit of my departed Snoopy’,” she added.

She now wants to trace the owners to put her mind at rest.
